ME HE SOSTENIDO Cinco meses con mi peso ideal...

Nolan does a great job with his approach. I have lost 20 pounds by simply sticking to the game plan. I have virtually eliminated sugar from my diet, reduce flour products, and, have increased my workouts to about 45 minutes 5 times/week. I feel more vibrant and energetic with Nolan's plan. I highly recommend it!

I'm easily discouraged by the whole process of dieting, but this one seems to be working very well for me. Fast weight loss...which improves my attitude about whether this whole process is worthwhile.
Simple, easy to follow. Not real complex and a lot of common sense. Menus are easy enough for an old bachelor like me to follow.

Finally, an intelligent entry into the overcrowded pantheon of weight loss books. Mr. Smith's recipes are both easy to prepare and delicious. I have only one quibble with the book and that is the title. The word "healthy" should be substituted for "skinny". The goal for all of us after all, should not be "thinness" for its own sake; but rather weight loss as a natural end result of an improved diet and exercise regime. Follow Mr. Smith's advice and you'll end up "skinnier" but more importantly, healthier.

It works!

This book provides the reader with a very simple, effective way to lose weight. With the Be Skinny Fast (BSF) monikor, it is easy to remember...Skip the Bread, Skip the Sugar, and Skip the Fried Foods! It is that easy.

The author also provides a lot of recipes for the reader to use in place of eating bread, sugars and fried foods. He mixes in a good amount of humor to keep the pacing going.

The book is a quick read with applicable strategies for losing weight. No special foods or diet drinks. Just common sense strategies for losing weight.

Pick it up!

A Contribution to Culture

THE BONUS YEARS DIET: A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURE
Ralph Felder's diet book is a lifetime labor of love. Felder, a practicing physician and scientist who holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford, and is the author of a book on magnetic resonance imaging, is exceedingly qualified to address the science of health. He handles the interaction between chemistry and health, and the aesthetics of cooking and eating, with an affection that will win your heart. There is enough science here to keep you informed, yet not so much as to lose the thread of health and its by-product, happiness. There are enough recipes to open four successful restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meticulous attention given to flavor, variety, appearance, and budget (both of time and of money), make The Bonus Years a milestone in human culture.
The idea of Bonus Years is that people want to live longer, and stay healthy when they do; and that diet is the crucial component that can make that (statistically) possible. The book has an easy-to-read, open style that invites you in. Felder's information comes from controlled studies; and he includes a list of references for anyone interested in learning the chemistry and epidemiology at first-hand. The strategy is that certain medicines, aspirin, folic acid, statin, and blood-pressure medicines, which reduce the risk of heart disease and debilitating high blood pressure, can be obtained more pleasantly by eating the right foods. These are red wine, dark chocolate, fruits and vegetables, fish, garlic and nuts. These, combined with such irresistibles as sirloin steak, olive oil, honey, turkey, whole-wheat pasta, and many others, offer about as pleasant a way of staying healthy as can be imagined. If one of the core foods doesn't appeal to you, you can omit it without much penalty. The statistically demonstrable extra six years of life gives The Bonus Years Diet a scientific foundation that is unique. The recipes are inspired. Even if you don't believe in diets, you should read The Bonus Years Diet to see the place in human culture of the humane interaction between science, cooking, health, and eating. --Bill Abler

My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine. Dosing food like doctors dose pills. A great idea. Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet. The recipes are great. He is a chef and knows his stuff! My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding. I love the stuffed french toast. I just saw Dr. Felder on tv and as he says "this is a diet we cal live with."

I own many cookbooks but this is absolutely one of my favorites. I love the healthy aspects of this book. I appreciate all of the research put into it---delicious dishes based on science, but wow do I thoroughly enjoy the recipes. Dr. Felder's Chefs hat shines through here. I love the pan-grilled salmon with frisee salad lyonnaise--excellent!! The black bean chili is delicious and the crab salad with creamy dressing is the best. Another favorite is the salmon with shanghi red sauce. What a grerat combination, a MD and Chef. No wonder this book is so good.

Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.

Let me first say that I have maintained a 20 pound weight loss for over 20 years, and it has been an everyday struggle. After finally getting sick and tired of dieting and above average amounts of daily exercising I was looking for something else. After reading "The rules of normal eating" and "Am I hungry" I was finally ready to put dieting way behind me and get on with my life. With this book I finally learned to eat with intention, really feel satisfied with food, not deprive my self and stop overeating. The system will really work for you if you are ready to give up dieting and food rules. I am still amazed at how little food I need to eat to feel satisfied and energized. When I was counting "Points" many times I was eating just because I "hadn't used all my points", not because I was hungry, and I was not necesarily eating foods that I enjoyed I was just eating food that fit in to "the plan" Today I eat healthy foods that I enjoy in amounts that are satisfying and I am maintaining my weightloss. The author also has a wonderful Program on CD about mindful eating which really ties everything together check out his website at [...].

A blue print for change

Review Date: 2001-04-12
For those who are familiar with the diet literature this book does not give model recipes or nutritional guidance on the proper balance between carbs v. protein but is a more comprehensive treatment of the major factors which contribute to over eating. Burggraf provides the reader with a clear, common sense blue print for understanding what forces drove him and most of us to over eat and then presents a concise yet comprehensive approach to making fundamental changes in how we deal with food. For anyone who has tried to diet and failed this may be the book that provides the guidance they need - if they're willing to give it a serious shot.

A Weight Loss System You Can Live With

Review Date: 2001-01-15
As a psychologist, I have seen scores of clients struggle with weight control. Although fad diets and strict calorie restriction may work in the short run, excess weight almost inevitably creeps back on. Worse, dieting is the first step in the development of many eating disorders. Frederick Burggraf's CAMP system is not a diet and does not leave its followers feeling deprived. Instead, the CAMP system is a new approach to food itself. Using Burggraf's techniques, one learns to appreciate and savor what he or she is eating. Food takes on a deeper, richer taste. In conventional diets, food is viewed as an enemy; in the CAMP system, it is seen as a blessing. Yet almost paradoxically, this approach allows one to lose weight by savoring and enjoying each bite rather than eating mindlessly. It is truly an approach to food that one can live with--in gratitude and appreciation. I recommend it highly.

A Psychotherapist's View

Review Date: 2001-01-11
This is a small gem of a book for those folks who've tried everything and did not keep that weight off, long term. (Everything, that is, but the CAMP Program.)

I referred one of my counseling clients to attend one of Fred Burggraf's series of four CAMP sessions after we had been working on her weight difficulties for quite a while. She had all the intellectual understanding but the principles outlined in this book helped her to begin to really practice mindfulness in eating -- plus the other parts of the program -- and she says, "that has made all the difference" -- her pounds are coming off and she knows this time, they will stay off since this is definitely not a diet program but a "quality of life for a lifetime program."

So much of this practical, easily understood book is directly related to learning to think about and experience food in a new way and to eat differently.

I also see this approach as a metaphor for a mindful and certainly spiritual approach to living each day to the fullest. Yes, it is primarily about achieving balance and harmony in the eating arena but if one follows the authors suggestions, it will lead to balance and harmony as a way of life.

Lastly, the author serves as a role model in the best sense of that term. He depicts his own struggles with his weight and the illness that was made worse by the weight. The "participatory" development of his method is truly his special gift to the world -- by transforming his own pain, mental and physical, into health and creativity, by changing his attitudes and habits, he invites others to follow in his footsteps. Bravo!

Addendum: The CAMP of the title is an acronym representing the four primary hubs of Mr. Burggraf's method. It is only an interesting synchronicity that I share the name of this book.

Finally, something that makes sense!

Finally there is a new way of looking at eating that makes sense. This book introduces a system that gives you a new way of looking at food. It's not a diet, and it doesn't involve eating only rabbit food and exercising like you're going for the marathon. Yet, it works. I was shocked after starting the program to realize that I had been rushing through virtually every meal, just shoving food in my mouth, not thinking about the taste, whether I was hungry, whether I was full, etc. The CAMP system made me slow down, and I've even started cooking again instead of hitting the nearest drive thru or grabbing whatever was around.

It took a health expert to tell me more about Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg than all the bios I've read on these memorable athletes. Letha Hadady has provided a real service here by combining history, culture and health care all in one wallop -- and she did so with a firm command of her subjects. I knew about the religious barrier and the color barrier, but not to the extent as provided here in this short but illuminating piece. Jackie Robinson had diabetes? I didn't know. I go back to Montreal with him, even before he got to Brooklyn, when he played for the Montreal Royals, so I've always felt that connection with Robinson and still think he did more to bring the races together than anyone. I was inspired by this story and I'll be returning to this Amazon Short to learn more from Letha's health tips. Altogether, a superb essay. Jack Engelhard

When I was a kid my father took me to Brooklyn's Ebbits Field and we sat high up in the bleachers, ate popped corn and yelled for the home team. At age ten I rode my bike half way across the City to the house of Carl Erskine, the Dodgers' star pitcher so that he could sign my baseball. Even now--so many years later--I can still list the lineup of the team that put Brooklyn on the map. I never got to meet Jackie Robinson, a great American hero and shining example for everyone who loves the sport.

This Amazon Short tells Jackie Robinson's awe-inspiring personal story-- his troubled youth and struggles against racial prejudice. As an added bonus, because this biography is written by Letha Hadady a highly respected natural health expert, it describes the best diet and herbs for diabetes, a disease that Jackie had and that many other people suffer from today. Jackie acted with great character and confidence in all that he did. Youth today can learn a lot from his story. Anyone with diabetes will be interested in the sound health advice found here. I strongly recommend buying this Short and I look forward to the upcoming Champion Spirit Series of Amazon Shorts.

I read this book after reading a newspaper interview with the author. It is everything she promises! The four step program is practical and workable for those of us rushing through life. Once learned, it simply enables us to stop and think before we take a bite of food that we neither need nor want. The best part of the program for me was the emphasis on intuition, which can be exercised and strengthened until it becomes a useful and meaningful "Inner Guide". I also resonated with the advice on how to be a "best freind" to yourself: the author asks, if we wouldn't tell a friend she was fat, why do we tell ourselves that. I recommend this book not only to those who have dropped out of Weight Watchers (like me) but to all who feel they cannot stop reaching for the cookies and candies and doughnuts they see all around them. I wish Amazon could make an exception to thier system and give Conquer your Cravings 7 stars. In short, this book changed my life. I have struggled with weight problems my whole life and in this time have read many books which promised a "quick-and-easy" fix. Conquer Your Cravings does not promise this;in fact, it warns you that conquering your cravings will be an uphill battle. However, it also gives you the armor to go into battle. First, it teaches you to "hear your thoughts" because often when you are craving cookies, beneath it all you are craving something greater: fullfillment in a relationships, perhaps. This book taught me to be true to myself and to listen to my intuition. With it, I got rid of my neagtive thoughts that have impeded my performance for my whole life (i.e. I can't do this.) and replaced them with affirmations. I am now more successful in my every day life and happier. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight and wants to lead a happier, more fulfilling life.

Finally, a book that can truly change your life around.

I was thrilled to hear that there was a place in which I could express to others how much this incredible book has truly helped me. Like anyone who may have a bad relationship with food, I have spent so many years stuggling with the overwhelming urges to eat when I am not hungry, have a day turn "bad" with binging or simply just obsessivly thinking about food! These actions literally controlled my life, how I would treat people, if I would go to work or social events and so many other things. These things were all determined on whether or not I felt I was having a "good" or "bad" day, I was so out of control with my actions and thoughts of food! I knew, being a person who was (or at least appreared to others to be) a pretty "normal" person in most other areas of my life, that there had to be some reason I was doing doing so lousy at this one, but I could not figure out why. I found Suzanne's book and instantly knew I had found something different, something that could really help me, by using my "inner guide" and intuition and finally getting to the root of the problem. And I have discovered that this problem is all in our thinking patterns and the habits that we have created. Conquer Your Cravings explains this idea, which I knew would be my only way to gain peace and freedom with food and myself. Suzanne has this process, which explains how we are literally able to STOP ourselves when the cravings and thoughts arise, and before any major destructive behavior can actually begin. This process has not only taught me how to acknowledge these negative thoughts and stop them, but it explains WHY they come about and what we can actually do to eliminate and control them. I will continue to work on the processes that are given to me in this book for the rest of my life, my "bad" days are getting less and less and I am utilizing the control that I now know I have by using these wonderful steps and ideas.

Excellent book! I have only recently heard about Cortisol and the roll it plays in weight gain, and Talbott does a good job of explaining how it works. I feel as though he were writing about me. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I felt he could have explained more about eating on the plan itself, instead of just giving an example for one day of meals.

An excellent follow up with an easy to follow plan

I picked up The Cortisol Connection on a business trip a year ago and read it cover to cover on the flight home to Boston. It was an easy read that provided lots of information about the science behind stress and its affect on the body. As a salesperson doing lots of travel it really was an eye opener on what stress was doing to my body.

My wife (mother to 3 kids under 5 at the time) also found Dr. Talbott's book to be extremely informative. Having tried different diets and weight loss supplements, she appreciated finally having information about how stress was affecting her ability to "shed the pounds".

In his second book, The Cortisol Connection Diet, Dr. Talbott provides more useful information and concrete examples of how to use his "SENSE" program to lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Both my wife and I enjoyed this book as much as the first (it was an even easier read!!!)and look forward to putting some of the additional "tidbits" on reducing stress and proper diet to use.

If you've read the first book, you'll find this an excellent follow up. If you haven't read the first book, this one definitely stands on its own, although I'd recommend both.

The Cortisol Connection Diet - A "Must Read"!

If you have read any "diet" books from the past 10 years, and then attempted in vain to follow the advice in those books, you will really enjoy and appreciate reading the Cortisol Connection Diet. For starters, it's a very "easy read". It's as though you are listening to a casual conversation from a friend. The information is presented in a logical and easy to follow manner. I read the book cover to cover on a short plane ride. There were two particular aspects of the book that I thought were very unique and extremely helpful. First are the highlights at the end of each chapter. I have found myself on numerous occasions, going back to the book, reviewing the chapter highlights and quickly getting the information I was looking for. Secondly, the sample menu plans and daily logs at the end of the book were great! I would put this on anyone's "must read list"!

At last! The correct diet for stress symptoms!

I don't do stress well at all! After years as a first grade teacher and a stressful personal life, stress almost hospitalized me. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I was running on a pure histamine. My adrenals were shot-no emergency energy! I was covered with rash, depressed when I could come down enough. My muscles were wasting away. Then my thyroid crashed and I could barely drag my legs around to walk. After the thyroid started up again, the doctors "blood type diet" didn't do much. Then I saw an article on Dr. Talbott in a magazine and followed the advice while I waited for the book to arrive. I've only been on the plan for 10 days and the depression is gone and, oh, yes the brain fog. I can do 30 minutes a day on my crosstrainer. I am sleeping better and feel more positive. All this after I had to quit work five years ago because this syndrome is so debilitating. Great book! Read it! Use it! It's for everyone since we're all living under stress. I'm into The Cortison Connection now. I fell like I'm giving myself a second chance at life and loving it.
If you're tired of starving to loose weight and want to eat to achieve a healthy body and spirit, this is the best. I don't have those awful sugar cravings anymore. Did I mention I was on heavy Prednisone for five years and had drug-induced hypoglycemia? Anyway, this food plan (it's not a diet because you're never hungry) is perfect. I was never able to get the weight to drop off and now it's coming off.
Thanks, Dr. Talbott. People like you come along far too infrequently. Penecillin and the polio vaccines for the 20th century. Obesity for the 21st! If anyone should question this books importance, open your eyes to how few fit people you see. We've been "digging our own graves with a spoon"! Examine the statistics. It makes perfect SENSE. It's soooo simple!

A great book -- the chocolate chip cookies are wonderful and so is the rice pudding -- both guilt-free and suitable for the lactose intolerant. Thank you for providing these recipes in a clear and understandable reference book!
