This is a book with some helpful hints...although it is really hard to follow. The excersise tips are great. I don't think I'm really qualified to rate this book as well as other fitness books. It is def a book for someone who is just starting out and wants to lose weight and gain muscle.

Very worthwhile book

30-day BootCamp: Your Ultimate Weight Loss Plan is an amazing book and a wonderful way of life. As Valerie Vauthey says, you have to be ready to lose the weight, but if you are, and follow Valerie's bootcamp, the weight just falls off. And, it's actually fun, because Valerie Vauthey thinks of everything and makes it easy. And it is totally healthy.

But beware: The results of this book might be that you find yourself jumping out of bed every morning and running to a mirror to see how thin you have gotten during the night. You might find yourself with a new and unusual desire to rush to stores and spend money you werent planning to spend and buy bikinis and tops that show off your belly button.

You may find yourself with a new boyfriend or a newly ardent husband. In other words....this book works.

Finally, a well-written reducing/lifestyle change plan. Dr. Logan compiles everything you need in one comprehensive book without being `way out there' or a `silver bullet'. The California Wine Country Diet is truly an enjoyable lifestyle change. It is do-able, enjoyable, straightforward and sensible. I have done many diet plans and have found them to be impracticable or impossible to follow in the real world. Dr. Logan's plan is easy to follow; so easy that any gourmet recipe can easily fit into the meal plan guidelines provided one exercises portion control. I have been able to eat well and still enjoy my Castello blue cheese, Kashi TLC crackers and glass of local Chambercin. Ching, Ching to you Dr. Logan!

This book is fantastic! I love the recipes! I think it is great that the book provides more information than just "the diet". This book really shows how to incorporate a new lifestyle rather than just a diet. I love how it shows a way to enjoy food and have an indulgence, but still have a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime. Excellent Job!!

Insightful and Well-researched Findings

I have to applaud Dr. Logan for this wonderful book. I'm normally not that interested in the science and don't really care for biology that much but this book presents the findings and studies in such a straightforward, concise and clear way. After reading this book, it is hard to debunk that diet somehow affects a person's proneness to acne.

This is something that anyone with some skin problem should read. Although it is a non-fiction, this book is not boring at all. It presents a wealth of relevant information throughout the book and is well worth the money.

Excellent advise, with medical backing.

In the midst of claims that diet and acne are not related, this book explains the interconnections between what we eat and our health, and the specific factors that affect the health of our skin.

One of the very best tips in this book is for the Zeno device. It REALLY works, be preventing breakouts from turning into full eruptions. We were sceptical about the claims for the Zeno until we read about it in "The Clear Skin Diet."

I have struggled with acne for the past 19 years. During this time, I have tried almost every imaginable medical treatment. While I found some success, my acne always returned as soon I stopped the medication. I felt that there must be some connection between diet and acne for this problem to persist. However, I was never able to find a dermatologist to support this suspicion or point me in the right direction.

The Clear Skin Diet provided me with the research and understanding I had sought all these years. The research is thoroughly presented and accessible to the general public. After incorporating many of the authors' suggestions into my daily life I have seen a significant difference in the severity of my acne! I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with acne and hopes to make a lasting change in their lives.

By following the expert advice from these authors, you may free yourself from expensive medications and painful medical treatments. What physician would complain if their patients decided to heal themselves with good nutrition?

Cheers to Drs Logan and Treloar for showing us the research that makes so much sense?

"Age-related" illness?.... bunk!!

If you are plagued with so called age-related illness, let me tell you it has nothing to do with age and everything to do with the STANDARD AMERICAN DIET (SAD). You have the opportunity and ability to regain your health, live out the rest of your years feeling strong, energetic and mentally alert.

Dr. Fuhrman opened my eyes when I read his "Eat to Live" book and I will be forever grateful. In following his advice I shed 70 pounds in 6 months and have kept it off for almost two years If you would like to take control of your health destiny, instead of allowing drug companies to choose your fate, read this book.

The best book on nutrition!

I first read Joel Fuhrman, M.D.'s book "Eat To Live" May 2007 after my father died of heart disease. I have always been a vegetarian but I have always been overweight as well. I had 50 extra pounds to lose and my main goal has always been health over looks. I learned from his book that being a Vegan also means no processed foods or animal products of any kind. I love that book and lost those 50 pounds that I had never been able to lose before age 42.

After a year living the "Eat To Live" plan I read "Eat For Health" twice. The differences are huge. The biggest difference is that Dr. Fuhrman takes us Americans through 4 stages of gradual eating changes by doing some food exercises and stepping down animal products and processed foods. The only foods he asks us to eliminate immediately are all cheese, butter and transfats. I can see why he changed his point-of-view to gradually add vegetables, fruits and beans to our diets because otherwise it can be a shock to our typical way of eating and most people will reject it as they did in his book, "Eat To Live."

I find I need the extreme approach right off the starting line and I have learned to love vegetables and fruits. I feel that his gradual steps to eliminate meat and processed foods and grains was backpedaling from his original book, but on the other hand I fully understand why he did it and that was to reach as many people to change their eating habits as possible and so in this content, it makes perfect sense. Before May 2007 I was a vegan who rarely ate fruits and vegetables thinking cereal and popcorn was healthy, now I thrive on those foods and have kept my weight down to near ideal with no effort at all.

I have always loved reading nutrition books and before Joel Fuhrman, M.D. I thought Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Oz were the best, but now I see that they both focus far too heavily on whole grains, which Dr. Fuhrman says to eat very little of because they are not dense in nutrition. The rule of this plan is to eat foods highest on the nutrient index and avoid foods with little nutritional value all-together.

Here's a list of the foods he says we can eat from his book in unlimited quantities, and these are the only foods I eat myself. This plan is the only book that made perfect sense to me and I knew in my core that this is the only choice I would make for optimal health and wellness.

Low-protein causes yeast infection?

I read this book eagerly and found it to be chock-full of good information. I was totally sold and began the "agressive weight loss" program immediately. It has been 3 weeks and I have lost 12 lbs so far. However, I contracted a vaginal yeast infection by the end of the first week. Having not had one of these for 20 years, I went to my doctor. She said that low protein diets are a risk factor for yeast infections! I am now doubting the veracity of all I have read by Dr. Furhman about how much protein is in this diet. I have added more tofu (1 box per day) to prevent any reoccurance, but readers beware!

The education that Dr. Furhman provides in this 2 book set is worth much more than the low cost. People have paid thousands of dollars to obtain health through various avenues...but the truth is only we have control through our food choices. I have applied the principles taught in these books to my life and I highly recommend "Eat For Health" to anyone that is searching for maximum health! B.J.L. from PA

Meeting my health goals for the first time in my life !

I have followed a very healthy lifestyle for 30 years, but changing to follow Eat For Health allowed to meet my health goals for the first time in my life !

I have followed Pritikin for many years. Ornish, McDougall, Esselstyn all are also nearly identical to Pritikin, and are all excellent programs. However, adjusting to Fuhrman's program allowed my cholesterol to drop 20 points better than ever on Pritikin, and I should be in reversal of atherosclerosis, without meds, for the first time. Fuhrman's background, insight and keen knowledge of the medical literature are unique in medicine, allowing him to create a program that, I believe, is the best known to medical science.

The next medical frontier is adapting health programs to individual needs. Dr. Fuhrman has made the best progress in this, as can be seen in his very active website.

Fuhrman's Eat For Health is the best resource for anyone who wishes to take control of their health.

I cook from this book several times a week and I've yet to find something that I wouldn't cook again or that I wouldn't serve to guests. I'm not the best or most patient cook, so I really appreciate the quick and easy aspect. A couple of things to consider - one of the ways they reduce calories is by using veggies such as peppers and zucchini to stretch normally high calorie meals. Also, many of the recipes are very flavorful, not necessarily spicy, but lots of strong sauces and spicing. If you don't like those things, this might not be the book for you....luckily we do.

I got this book from the library and tried several receipes before I decided to order several copies for my family and friends. I am the very definition of a foodie. I'm also health conscious.

WOW! I've had this book for a few months, and I got it used figuring if I didn't like it, no big deal. This week so far I've made the chicken pot pie, sugar cookies, and pumpkin spice muffins. They all have come out wonderfully and you cannot tell they are low-cal!! Tonight I'm making the mustard dill pork chops with pumpnickel stuffing and tomorrow onion & pepper braciole! I bet you didn't think you could eat that stuff and have it come in at under 400 calories!!!

I'm not even a reader of family circle, but this book is probably one of my most used cookbooks :)

I have never enjoyed diet books and have always felt that diets really only promote unhealthy eating. But this book is different. The recipes were delicious. (I have a difficult time believing that each serving falls within the calorie requirement...they're that good.) It also emphasizes portion control with food variety which actually gave me a more balanced and healthy way of eating. I don't alternate between starving and overstuffed. I even do better at restaurants. I don't know if I've lost weight yet but I feel better and that was my goal in the first place.

Good recipes but inconvenient number of servings

I got this book as I'm always on a lookout for great tasting healthy recipes. I have made a few dishes from the book and all of them turned out well (blueberry cottage cheese pancakes were especially good). So I have no complaint about the quality of the meals. However, our family consists of two people and I usually cook for two nights - read 4 servings. The MAJORITY of the recipes are for 6 servings. It is highly inconvenient as 6 doesn't adjust easily to 4, and I don't like freezing leftovers.
Because of this issue, I rarely look in the book when I'm searching for a recipe.
If you have a big family or don't mind freezing leftovers then I would reccomend the book, as the recipes are good. But if you're single or have two people in your household, you might want to look elsewhere for your everyday cookbook.

NOT a Diet Book - A Message We All Need to Read!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-12
Like the book cover says, "NOT a DIET BOOK." I have never weighed more than 160 pounds in my life, yet this is one of the most candid, down-to-earth, emotionally-involving inspirational books I have ever read.

Sure we see Jared on TV. We think: young, good-looking, slender spokesperson celebrity. What could possibly be the big deal?

In the book, Jared discloses the story of the pain and the humiliation of weighing 425 pounds. Yet, it's a story we can all relate to. For instance, we have all been ostracized.

Jared talks about hanging out with the high school "misfits" at the cafeteria. Then, after being branded as a misfit among misfits, he's forced to eat by himself at lunch. "There's nothing worse," Jared says, "then having to sit by yourself when you are fat. Then everyone really notices how fat you are. They look at you with disgust as they walk by, and judge the food you have on your tray." He then goes on to discuss taking the verbal stings of the "killer bee" girls in his co-ed gym class.

Jared assures us that it's okay to wallow around in the muck for a while until we find out what works for us as individuals attempting to achieve our goals. (I found great solace in that fact and could relate it to my own career.)

There's plenty of humor in the book as well. Jared discusses shooting his first Subway commercial (by the way, there is actually very little mention of Subway in the book). He had a hard time finding any "healthy" food on the set. Finally, he found a Subway sandwich on a tray, and rushed over to grab it. "No!" the producer yelled at him. "That one is for the commercial!" It had been sprayed with shellac!

After reading this book, I have vowed to eat even better than I already have begun. Thanks, Jared!

My only wish is that Subway would promote this book in its stores to its customers. In the meantime, get the book on your own. It's a message we all need to read!

i found this book to be very inspiring and different from the usual weight loss books i have read. i especially like the part of him saying to look at your hunger pangs as signs of something good instead of signs to go raid the fridge, which is how i have always looked at them. this a good, motivational read, which has encouraged me to continue with my plan to lose weight one day at atime.

I LOVED this book! It was a page turner to follow Jared's personal story, but it was also filled with original insights into ways that every one of us can make worthwhile changes in our lives. How refreshing to read that conventional wisdom was designed for people en masse and not necessarily for me. How strengthening to read that I hold the keys to making lasting improvements in my life, and that I can make those improvements. I choose to be inspired by Jared. I thank him for his honesty and his positive, but realistic, attitude. His accomplishment was (and is) outstanding.

In this day and age of immediate fixes, it was refreshing to read about someone doing it the old fashion way. No Trim Spa, no funky diets, no bariatric surgeries, no prescription medicine. And it was also nice to read that he did it slowly, without the no pain, no gain mentality of most Americans. I was able to use his story in a class I was taking this semister because his story is simple and easy to follow. If everyone could see it his way, I wouldn't have to sit through 20-25 minutes of commercials during a one hour TV show that either tell me I have to lose weight their way or I need to eat it their way! You go Jared!! I am a health care professional and know that your way is the only way; there are no magic fixes. It didn't take him overnight to put on the weight. It had to be taken off the same way. It was sensible, simple, healthy and most of all, because of all this, he was able to make the permanent lifestyle changes that we HAVE to make.

His story is proof that one can achieve any goal with sufficient motivation, or "sparks" as he terms them. Given me a lot to think about with my own issues as I'm sure will be the case for other readers.

Don't be decieved by the cover! Something about the name and the picture on the front threw me. I thought it might be one of those books of how the celebrity worked out and never really explaining the workout to the reader, just so the author could make a quick buck.

This is very well written with weekly workout routines and every exercise has photos to follow up on. They separate your goal into different routines.

What I love most about this book is that they don't use the default strength training moves! They use band resistance (or tubing) and do different, unique moves to tone the body! This is really a workout you could do at home in your living room. You don't need a treadmill, if you have a nice place to walk and run or jump rope even!

The star's trainers, for example, Mike Alexander (Jessica Simpson's trainer) writes a whole section for abs and the exercises he uses. In another chaper, another trainer writes about the best shoulder toning moves.

I felt like the nutrition section wasn't gimmicky or to hard to follow. They were real in their advice, following a natural whole foods diet with fish and lean meats to get your protien.

All in all- I might have an addiction to buying diet and fitness books, but this is a great one to add to my collection. Especially because I love using the Physioball (think that big, pop resistant workout ball) and resistance tubing!

I bought and read this book when it was first published. I used it to begin discussions with my two daughters about the importance of developing an inner life versus obsessing about one's appearance. It proved a very valuable tool in that regard. I just ran across the book again on my bookshelf. My daughters are in their early 20's now and their values are firmly in place. But they, and I, and the next generation of women, are continually hounded by a media which won't "give up" trying to convince us that we need improving. This beauty-obsessive attitude promotes self-criticism and self-doubt and inadequacy. Wake up, women of America. Take back your power. Stop believing the insidious lies that the media giants are using against us, just so that they can get us to spend our hard-earned money to line their pockets!

I've had this book on my bookshelf for a couple of years, but I've never picked it up. I think I was put off by the title, which is really inadequate to the contents. But I finally did, and found it to be quite thoughtful and insightful.

No book can be powerful enough to address the pains of body dysmorphic disorder and eating disorders (whether under- or overeating). That has to be done in real life, with the help of a caring professional. But if you are dealing with serious problems such as these, or with less disturbed but still painful obsessions and with constant self-criticism, this book is a good source of reminders for how to shift your attention toward the positive.

The author's own journey is quite apparent throughout the book, at times directly through her words, but often less directly through her insight. It's an act of love to turn that journey into a gift for others.

Light reading on a heavy subject.

A judge a book by the number of lines I underline. This had about 4. It consists of 1-2 page essays on body-image, dieting and beauty issues. I wished the essays were longer and more factual. It is a helpful read if you are studying self-acceptance,but by far the best book on the subject is, "How Much Does Your Soul Weigh?" by Dorrie McCubbrey.

This is a wonderful book. I read it constantly. The chapters are short- almost like meditations. It is a really refreshing perspective on how women can focus on what is really important in their lives.

Should be required reading for every woman

Excellent reading material for any female. Coming from a generation hounded by Seventeen Magazine from age 11, this really woke me up to the constant messages we women are bombarded with from childhood. It helped wake up to the person I can become if I continue to fear aging and trying to stay 22....it gave me a new perspective on becoming a truly valuable person. A great first step to exploring exactly who it is you are and how you feel about your appearance vs. who you could become.
Wish it were easier to find, and I certainly wish she had written other material!

What a great program. It's simple to understand, simple to use. One short chapter a day. Each chapter builds on the other. And every day you take one step toward better health. I am so thankful for this book and the accompanying materials. I even bought one for my sister-in-law.

This is a great kit. My class is learning a lot of helpful, healthy information to improve their lives. I was quite disappointed however to find the price doubled when others I recommended buy this kit came to
Amazon to buy it. Shame on you Amazon.

This is a great book for those with a lot of money to implement most of the suggestions made by the author and his wife. You have to be a very good
dietician to fix the meals. Who can eat fruits and vegtables all day long?
The water portion if follwed will cost between 2000 and 5000 dollars.
The exercises are good but not for an old person or someone in a wheelchair.
The audience is geared to 20 to 40 year old person with a lot of time and money to implement this routine.

This is a wonderful book for anyone needing a jumpstart to a new and healthier life. Crystal is indeed a shining example of health, intelligence and vitality. She has a easy writing style, making the most complex matters easy to understand. (the free video is great as well). I would highly recommend this to anyone lacking the building blocks to living a passionate and rewarding life; body, mind and soul.

I sat down figuring that I would do one chapter. Ha, I couldn't put it down! Even when the author clearly instructed the reader to stop and do individual assignments, I kept going, finishing it all in one day. Her writing flowed so beautifully. It was like chatting with a close, trusted friend who knows exactly what you are going through and is able to gently pinpoint, empathize with, and provide guidance in achieving and maintaining optimum health, both mentally and physically. At some point, I do plan on going back and re-reading each chapter the way the book was designed, but for now I am happy just knowing that there is a better, more positive way in dealing with many of life's challenges, especially those that specifically pertain to women.
Needless to say, I've already pre-ordered her newest book, which should be out soon, I hope.

Wow! Absolutely Amazing!

I purchased Simply...Woman some time ago and I can honestly say that this book has taken me on a journey that I didn't know I could, or even needed to, take. I've struggled with my weight for years and have always viewed food as the enemy. Through the week-by-week program and the questions posed in this book, I now view myself in a whole new light. I've learned to love the skin I'm in. This book has transformed me mind, body & spirit.

This book is unlike the mainstream over-hyped programs; it works where others have failed. Within the pages of this book are not only keys to weight loss, but keys to discovering the real you. It's about life, what you want and understanding your true self (what makes you tick and why).

Crystal takes you through the program one week at a time. It's not a quick fix but it is doable. This program will not empty your wallet either. There is a workout DVD included free with the book. You don't have to buy any fancy equipment; you can use bottles of water or soup cans for weights. This program also works with other programs such as other fitness DVDs, sports, whatever. There is also a great support group on the website (http://www.crystalandrus.com/forum/index.php).

I highly recommend this book for weight loss and an enriched life.

I spent a year in therapy going over my issues. One day i was browsing internet hoping to find another miracle diet (for the 100000000 time). I cam across Crystal's website. I saw a book there I didn't think much of it, but went and bought it anyway. What did I have to lose? Let me tell you, I couldn't put it down and read it all night through. What an amaizing, down to earth lady. I found out so much about myself, my worries, fears and pain in one night than in my entire life. Yes, I was hurt a lot, so what! No one can take my life and joy from me. It all in my hands! I am following your instractions and living my life loving myself for the first time. By the way, I am losing weight too, but who cares anymore!
Thank you so much,
