I for one grabbed this book because I heard Dr. Nick on "Focus on the family" in an interview and again on another radio interview and held him to be a Christian based diet author with personal experience and a wealth of knowledge about the medical side of getting thin. However, the book came across to me as an attempt to appeal to the masses and sort of put the credit to God on the back burner or off to the side or in the shadows and I can't be as inspired by that as a christian or for that matter, before my salvation. I did learn some great insights from Dr. Nick but I am a believer in the power of God to do everything and that just didn't come accross in this book. So with regret I say this book is a testament to Dr. Nicks' great triumph over the "Idolotry" of food as he said in his interview, but it just didn't get me to go along. I hope he will in the future let his faith be more prominent in his story telling and trust in our Lord for the results more than his publisher. If you would like a good hepful book as a compliment to this one may I suggest,Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

Interesting in how he lost weight. We all do not have the money to do as he did. But it had to be hard for him to hold to what he had started. same as any diet. The change first has to be in your mind and heart before it will become part of your outsides. Believe first see results later.

a motivational book, especial for Christians who need to lose weight

Well done, good and faithful servant.

motivation, desire, drive, push, ambition,
all are needed in abundance to lose weight. the more you are overweight the more you need them. constantly as your companions for the process of getting your body in good shape to do life.

It is not a diet book. it is not a how to do it book. it is a how i did it and why i did it fast paced, quick fun read.

being fat is sin. it stops you from being that good and faithful servant that the faith requires and God expects. the author leads the way, walks the path, is a real leader for this important insight.

thanks.

This isn't a typical "diet" book, which I like. I've read enough diet books in my life to understand the basic concepts. Instead, this book chronicles one person's journey, including the heartache associated with being obese as well as the triumphs of losing signficant amounts of weight. It has been surprisingly motivational - I find myself thinking of the story throughout the day when I struggle with something, telling myself that if he did it, I can certainly do it too. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

I loved this book. I believe that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not believe that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
Unfortunately, it will be hard to duplicate his method because few of us can take a year or so away from employment--even for life saving therapy.
I see that used copies are selling very cheap here at Amazon making the ultimate combination--education, entertainment, and value. Order several copies of this book to use as gifts.

I am not a cook. I don't know how to throw a meal together for a family, since I am single. But this is a great book for people who are tired of eating the same old thing with the Atkins diet. The recipes are easy and with practice can add flair to your cooking. I particularly like the sections that teach you how to make sauces and spice mixtures

I have been eating low carb for seven years. As a fibromyalgic with diabetes, I was a very sick woman seven years ago. A low carb diet and the treatment I'm using for fibromyalgia (Dr. Paul St. Amand's guaifenesin protocol as outlined in What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia)have together saved the quality of my life. It's hard to find good low carb cookbooks with recipes that are easy to prepare and easy to find ingredients. Both George Stella's cookbooks are right on the mark. I highly recommend them. Many of his recipes have become favorites for both me and my guests. I love to feed people, and no one leaves my table feeling deprived.

This book had raving reviews so I bought it as a gift for my sister who is pregnant and has gestational diabetes. To avoid taking insulin she's had to go low-carb but it's getting monotinous. Hence, the loving sister ordered her a cookbook because she loves to cook. After I received it and looked through it I was surprised at the number of recipes that called for "Sugar substitute - recommended: Splenda." Yikes! THE SUGAR SUBSTITUTE/SPLENDA RECIPES ARE MOSTLY IN THE DESSERT SECTION. Splenda is an artificial chemical sweetner which contains chlorine (a carcinogen) and a host of other chemicals. Although it has been approved by the FDA as safe (in short term studies only.) After reading George's response to my comments I think there are less recipes than I though calling for a sugar substitute (about 20%) and if he's right (which he should be) they are mostly in the dessert section. So this low-carb cookbook is mostly good for prego's if you ignore the dessert section. Just know in advance what you're getting!

NOT a "my-way-or-the-highway" eating plan!
Helpful Votes: 44 out of 45 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-01
I'm having a difficult time understanding a previous reviewer's comment that Mike Cleveland teaches in this book that his eating plan is the only acceptable approach (vs. Atkins, etc.). The following is a direct quote from The Lord's Table online course:

"Welcome to The Lord's Table! This course is a 60-Day program to help you gain control of your eating habits and to lose weight, if needed. Here is a suggested eating schedule to help you get up and running. The suggested eating days are like training wheels on a bike. Eventually you'll outgrow them, but they're helpful to get you started and you will feel more secure having them guide you. In The Lord's Table, this eating schedule is offered as a guide, not a requirement. Eventually you will develop your own schedule of eating that honors the Lord and produces weight loss or maintains optimum weight."

Doesn't exactly sound like he's saying his way is the only acceptable way to me - does it to you?

I find it frustrating that someone would not only misrepresent this author's teaching, but would cast aspersions on Mr. Cleveland's character as well. He "likes to toot his own horn" because he (supposedly) asked some who have been successful with breaking food's grip on their lives to come to this Amazon site and write a review? Sounds like getting the word out to me.

This is a wonderful program, with spot-on encouragement and firmly grounded Biblical teaching for those of us who find food has far too great a place in our lives. I highly recommend it.

One day I looked at myself in a full length mirror. As I stood there in my underwear my eyes closed in shame. I couldnt believe I allowed myself to get to this point. After three children, I felt like I would never get my body (any body) back. I fell on the floor in my bedroom and wept for God to show me what to do. Gluttony was my biggest sin. My idol. My obsession. I cried to God to save me from this incredible sin in my life. "I just want to eat when I feel hungry, I dont want to think about it every waking moment! PLEASE GOD!!!" After about 15 minutes I peeled myself off the floor and went to bed. The next morning I went to christianbooks.com and found The Lords Table. I did an Amazon search to see what the ratings were and I was flabergasted on how many 5 stars it was given. "What does this book say that all the others didnt?" was my first thought. But being obsessed with weight loss material I purchased the book. Now 25 days into the program I am down 18lbs but whats better than that. Is my walk with God. If you have come to a point in your life where its not about you anymore, but about God. Then this book is for you. You will gain control. Visit online www.settingcaptivesfree.com to be assigned a Mentor during your new walk with God.

This book is fun to read. The guy doesn't preach, in fact he's constantly poking fun at himself and everyone else. And he treats you like you might actually have a brain that you might even know how to use! You don't get endless breathless hype about the sin of sugar, or recycled pabulum about fat, or snotty rants about chemicals and the evil modern lifestyle. Instead, you get a clear explanation of what nutrients your body needs and how much of them it needs and how to get them without getting a lot of Calories besides. I don't think the book is perfect. It probably ought to have a diet plan for the beginners. But I don't think any serious dieter is going to have any problem doing it.

Amazing!

After years of doing everything from hours of exercising to starvation, all fat, no fat, food combining and "magic" pills, I am finally losing weight. If you are looking for "fast" weight loss (that will just come back in a month or two) this is not for you. I cannot believe I am actually losing a pound or two a week WITHOUT EFFORT! I am not even doing the suggested 20 minute a day walk. But ALL of my cravings have completely disappeared. Somedays when I am doing this I think "I'm just not hungry, how am I ever going to make myself eat the required number of calories and protien grams." When do you ever hear that from someone on a diet? I feel like someone finally has given me the secret combination that has changed my life from food/weight focused to simply living my life. Thank you Dr. Anonymous!

The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! shows the reader how to easily control his or her weight through eight vital factors that dominate body weight. The author (a researcher who deliberately chose to be anonymous) argues the obesity is a major problem for industrial societies and is a by-product of the success of modern societies at providing better nutrition for their peoples. Fortunately, these societies also have access to the tools and techniques needed to solve obesity problems. The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! offers a new approach to ending personal obesity called "The Threshold Theory" and extrapolates a technique the reader can use to make this approach work for persona weight loss. Obesity is neither a disease nor a "moral weakness". It is caused by an obscure (but normal) reaction to the lack of enough certain non-energy nutrients in the diet, and learning to correct this lack allows weight loss to begin almost automatically. The 2000 Multi-Diet: Taming The Beast! is recommended reading for anyone concerned with personal weight loss and proper nutrition in their diet.

A very sophisticated weight-loss technique!

The threshold theory is an ingenious explanation for why we get fat and what we can do about it. If this guy is right, and it looks like he might be, it changes the world. When you eat the right things, your body has no reason to make you hungry, so you can stop eating so much and lose weight. The Multi-Diet shows what to eat to make this happen. This author definitely makes a persuasive case for the threshold effect being what causes people to get fat. His ideas are clear and consistent with most of the known facts. I do not believe that he has proved his case, that probably won't be done for years. But nonetheless this is some very original thinking tied to some very solid research and I'm certainly losing weight myself.

"Eating in the Light of the Moon" is hands down the best book on disordered eating I have yet to read, because it sheds light on the painful struggle with uplifting, inspiring storytelling. Johnston's soft, delicate voice will weave you through tales of distant lands which somehow bring you to the shore of self-discovery. This book does use psychology as the basis for its generalizations, but I never found it to be too preachy. Like saying good-bye to your favorite characters at the end of a novel, you will not want this story to end. It is one giant affirmation, and I recommend it especially to women who long to reclaim their hidden or lost feminine.

For people who want to recover from an eating disorder this book is a must for your library. It is conforting, interesting and soulful. It prompts the inner self to open its mouth and get ready to be fed what will truly nourish you.

An eating disorder can be a catalyst to your growth as a person if you surrender to it with awareness and be open to its teachings. This book can help you do that. When you really know what you need besides behaviors of an eating disorder then you can go about the task of learning and working in partnership with life to create what you are really wanting and desiring.

If you are new in recovery this book helps open the door to the deeper self and prepares you for a journey. If you are already in recovery and want another affirming voice to add to your support system, this book will help.

What a fantastic exploration into an isolated world of eating disorders where no one really knows what it is like until you have been there. This book really gets to the meat of what is underlying an eating disorder. Having experienced this myself, it was nothing short of a incredible awakening as to revealing why I do what I do. This is a fabulous little book. It's a series of fifty very short advisory essays all about how to love yourself when you hate yourself. Specifically, Roth's work deals with compulsive eating, and this is her focus here too, but unlike some of her other work, this book is clearly meant to be more broadly applicable to any and all situations in which one might find oneself swimming in a sea of self-hatred. Roth is a humorous writer. She has a similar sort of wit as Anne Lamott, who has written the introduction to this book. Overall I found this book hilarious and moving. I stayed up all night to read it.

No matter how many times it happens, I'm always amazed when I find that there are other people in the world who go through some of the same things as me. This book really did it, it really showed me that I'm not alone in the frightening world of body-image. By the time I finished the second chapter, I had decided that I was going to get this book for my best friend for her birthday, and by the time I had finished the sixth chapter, I realized that I was going to buy it for every single one of my girlfriends for their birthdays.
This is a really amazing book, and the author really knows how to talk to women who are in need of reassurance as well as a little shove (or a big one) in the right direction.
I suggest it for women of all ages who struggle with any sort of body/self-image, no matter how long that struggle has been going on.

I read a few books by Geneen Roth, including this one, in the beginning of 2003. After reading them, I gave myself permission to stop "dieting", and allowed myself to eat the food I like, thinking that if I didn't feel deprived that I would eat less and lose weight. I also kept away from the scale. The result was I gained 30 pounds in 9 months, before stopping myself from this upward climb. Its taken over 4 years to lose those 30 pounds. To this day I still regret reading those books. While I don't think its healthy to obsess about food and counting calories and body image, I do think we need to be careful about what we eat.

This book easily explains the reasons why diets don't work from real-life perspectives. I was able to relate so well to the people who shared their experiences. The journey has been amazing. If you have struggled with food or eating disorders this book can change your life as well. It's probably the best purchase I have ever made.

Okay, sorry, maybe the title of my review was a little extreme but that was how I was starting to feel last year. For the last 23 years of my life I had been in a never ending battle with my weight and food. Every extra ounce of energy went into planning my next meal, wondering when I could eat again, dreaming and longing for the foods I wasn't "allowed" to eat and worrying about how many calories I'd consumed.

After losing and gaining the same 80 pounds twice, I lost 80 pounds again and was well on my way to gaining them all back for the third time. The thought of having to go on another diet filled me with despair and dread; I just knew I couldn't do it again. And, then by some small (or maybe big) miracle, Dr Michelle May and the "Am I Hungry?" program was introduced into my life.

Have you ever watched a baby eat? When they are done eating there is no way, no how you can make them eat without forcing them and in a similar manner, they will let you know EXACTLY when they are hungry and need to eat. As adults, we still have that inner wisdom in us - the little voice that tells us when to eat and when to stop when we've had enough. But, for me, years of dieting had beat that out of me. I could no longer tell when I was hungry and I sure as heck could not tell when I was full.

Let me tell you, when you can't feel or hear your own body's hunger and satiety signals, it sure makes it hard to stop eating when you've had enough!! As a result, I was constantly starving myself to lose weight and then overeating my way (because I couldn't hear my body tell me when to stop) back into weight gain. Am I Hungry? explained why diets never have and never will work as a long term solution. Am I Hungry? helped me get back in touch with my internal hunger cues and helped me learn how to tune back into that inner wisdom my body has about how much, what and when to eat. When you listen to your body, it will tell you EXACTLY what it needs!

So far I've lost a little weight and it continues to come off slowly. But, that is okay with me because I have found a way to eat and a way to live that I know will last me for a lifetime!

If diets haven't worked, Definately Try This!

I have been waiting my entire life for this book! I have been on many diets and read many diet and nutrution books. This book teaches you what all those thin people naturally do. It explains why diets don't work and how they set us up to flucuate between restrictive eating and over eating by depriving us and how that messes up our metabolism setting us up for failure. It teaches that All Foods Fit and how to live an Active Lifestyle with out punishing ourselves with food and exercise. It even touches on how to cope with Emotional Eating however, I do still believe that there are deeper psychological reasons why we emotionally overeat and some may need further work in this area with a professional. I did find the nuturitional and exercise information news that I already knew, but she helps clarify some misconceptions around some of the diets out there. I highly recommend taking the 8 week teleclass on their website - It helps incorporate all of the tools in this book and is definately worth the money -(After all aren't you worth it?). I highly recommend this book over any other diet/nutrition book out there! I will be getting rid of all of my other diet books on my shelf and incorporating all of the tools for life.

This book is one of those best kept secrets. I was amazed at the amount of info in this book. For anyone who has ever dieted and lost, this book is for you -- I mean it really is. I have battled weight gain for many years, and this is the first book that told me to master my hunger cravings. I am one of those people who often goes all day without eating, because as soon as I do, I cannot stop. Something kicks in and then I become a eating machine. This book stops that cycle permanently, and frees oneself of the curse.

same material, but more difficult to read ...

There are many books out on intuitive eating, and this is one of them. The ideas laid out in the book are not new, but are very good. I have read many books on intuitive eating, and have found others (Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works, The Rules of "Normal" Eating: A Commonsense Approach for Dieters, Overeaters, Undereaters, Emotional Eaters, and Everyone in Between!, Fat Is a Feminist Issue, Why Weight? A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating) much easier to read. This book is highly repetitive. There are eight chapters in the book, and each one deals with eating, nutrition, and exercise. I think this format would work better as a class, in which there was repetition at each session. As a book, however, it didn't work for me. Furthermore, as a person who has been hyper-focused on my eating for most of my life, I know more about nutrition and exercise physiology than most experts, having started reading peer-reviewed research on these areas at an early age. I don't need assistance understanding nutrition and exercise facts. I need help understanding how to eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm not.

So, while this book has some valuable information, I think that there are books that lay out the same information in a much more accessible format.

WHY THE WEIGHT? DARE TO BE GREAT! is like reading a Bible for those who want to lose weight. It is so inspirational that it should be kept out on a table to read and reread when one needs to be reminded of the multitude of ideas offered the readers. For those of us who have weight problems, it should be in a obvious place to use as a way of life.
Its contents are more than any reader could ever expect, without a page of disappointment.

In this book, Jean Krueger talks about eating in response to "loss". She has had some profound losses in her life including the deaths of both parents and 3 brothers......but she expands the concept of "loss" to other areas as well.

A second point is Krueger's philosophy that weight loss is not only about the pounds. It is about adding things into your life. When you are overweight, you have no energy. No zest. No joy of living. She urges you to examine your life. Take on new challenges and make a list of things you want to do and start doing them step by step.

In my own life, I suffered "loss" of self esteem when I was unable to balance the stress of being a perfectionist at work and trying to be a wife and mother at home. I ended up taking a transfer in order to survive and felt embarrassed and ashamed because I hadn't been able to handle it all. My self esteem fell to an all time low. Eventually I retired and again felt the "loss" of an exhausting but exciting career.

Later, I fell from a ladder and suffered a debilitating injury which put me on medication and laid me up for more than a year. Food was an easy solution to both losses. Besides, I deserved it and it made me feel better..... temporarily.

I reached a point when I felt my life was over. I became depressed and discouraged and withdrew from friends and activities.

Weight has been a problem all my life. I have tried many weight loss programs and the scale has yoyo'd up and down. But when I found this book and started reading it, I wrote in my journal, "could this really be the time?" In other words, could I not only take off the weight but resume a meaningful life?

My mantra has become, "I am determined to take back my life." I have lost 10% of my body weight, am about half way to my goal and am doing more things and enjoying them more than I have for years. I am again in touch with old friends and am helping to plan a reunion of current and retired employees. I eat out all the time...and make good choices much of the time. I walk alot and go to the gym several times a week and my husband and I have completed several 5K fund raisers. I have joined a quilting guild and taken an adult education sewing class. I am in training as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

I have been fairly diligent...but not perfect. For me, I no longer look for the "quick fix" to lose weight. Weight control is now more a change of mind set and life style and I owe my motivation to Jean Krueger and her insightful book.

Just attended a workshop featuring Jean Krueger and was sincerely motivated after hearing her speak that I purchased this book. She is truly a inspiration and I look forward to reading more about her method of weight loss. I would encourage others that are looking for a postive way to approach weight loss to hear her message.

Jean is an amazing woman and an inspiration to all. She is someone who has walked the walk. Her advice is on target. She is compassionate but shoots straight. Follow her plan and your life will change, along with your weight. I should know. I have been following her plan for a year now. I have lost 50 pounds, in spite of losing two important people. I dealt with the grief the right way -not eating my way through it. Thank you for everything, Jean.
