I have read this book cover to cover and I think the book covers pretty much every aspect of parenting teenagers - I've got two in my home. I bought the "Yes, Your Parents are Crazy" for my teens, as well. I wish Dr. would have mentioned something about cell phones, but I think I can figure them out, too with the help of other info. in this book. I have found some excellent ideas in this book and it has definately helped me maintain my inner "dispassionate cop" when dealing with those inevitable teen moments as well as help my sense of humor resurface. I have often been heard saying that there are lots of similarities in raising infants to teenagers including the number of people giving you unsolicitated advice. I think this book provides more then just more advice; it provides prospective.

This book is a Godsend! EVERY parent should read it...if possible, even BEFORE their child enters adolescence! You will gain the key to reaching your child! You will learn what TO DO and sometimes more importantly, what NOT to do regarding your parenting of your adolescent. His insight is REAL and APPLICABLE! You will be rewarded with a rich and mutually beneficial relationship with your child where you both feel respected and valued. This book was remarkable! I couldn't put it down. I am sure I will read it and reread it a few times. It's the closest thing to a how to book I've seen. He is brilliant!

Too many moments where your teen will just blow you away with something you never saw coming! The craziest things they do...you might understand after you read this book. I definetely recommend it.

I agree...our teens are crazy...but it is explainable!

This is one of the best books I have found to help parents understand not only what their teens are going through, but tips on responding and hope that this is only a "stage" of development...this too shall pass! As a Marriage & Family therapist, I work with many teens and their parents...I all but insist that the parents buy this book! I tell them that it is the "handbook" for parenting a teen! So many have thanked me...it becomes their guidebook through adolescence! I should receive royalties...or at least some kind of commission, don't you think?

Thanks so much for writing this book and in such an easy to read format! My only wish is that it had been available when my son was a teen!

What a great book!!

I was at my wits end with my 17 year-old daughter. She was acting up quite a bit and my normal reaction was anger which resulted in nothing but a lot of yelling, hurt feelings, and sleepless nights. Out of desperation, I searched for something, ANYTHING, that would help me get back on track with my daughter. This book was a God-send! I couldn't put it down. Dr. Bradley's philosophies and advice were right on target. I felt that he wrote it just for me. I applied his suggestions and what a difference it has made in my relationship with my daughter. Instead of yelling, we talk calmly. I listen, she listens. She still acts up once in awhile (after all, she's still a teenager) but I handle my reactions differently which makes her more comfortable coming to me with her problems. I sleep much better at night now. Dr. Bradley has given me so much hope that my sweet little girl is still there and we will get through these very trying times. I wish that all parents of teenagers could read this book. It is THE best.

Sorry, I just didn't find this book realistic at all. The author tries very hard, but does not succeed in writing a well written book about childhood cancer.

It is extremely hard to do and the author was very unsuccessful with this book.

As if being a 13-year-old, eighth grade male isn't bad enough, (there's girls to impress, homework to catch up on, drums to practice), try finding out your five-year-old brother has leukemia. It started the morning Steven left his little brother, Jeffrey, on a stool while he made his "moatmeal." Jeffrey fell and the bleeding started. Their mother races out the front door to take Jeffrey to the emergency room with an ice pack on his nose. Steven dreads the lecture he knows he'll get once he's home from school. Instead he's told his mother and brother will be leaving for Philadelphia and tests.

Steven tries to hold it together. But before long, he's feeling invisible, left out, guilty, angry. lonely, helpless, and wondering "what's the point?" His mother is totally wrapped up in caring for Jeffrey, his dad has become a worried zombie, and there's nothing Steven can do to help. Or is there?

For me, the single most important criteria for a gold star book is that it must make me "feel". It must make me reevaluate life as I see it, and wonder if I'm doing all I can to 1)appreciate my own blessings, and 2)make life better for others. This book does that and more. Jordan Sonnenblick gives the reader an honest, gritty look into the life of a family dealing with childhood cancer. He does it with amazing sympathy and humor. My 13-year-old son recommended this book to me. Two of his friends read it as well. If you haven't had the chance to read DRUMS GIRLS & DANGEROUS PIE, I highly recommend it.

This book is about an 8th grade kid trying to deal with life: school, girls, and playing in the band. He is the lead drummer for the all-city band. However, this all changes when his brother gets cancer. His whole life is turned upside-down. now he has to deal with school, girls, band, and a brother with cancer. It is an intriuging book and easy to read. I would reccomend it to someone in middle school or, maybe, in the early years of high school.

Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie is a realistic- fiction book where a kid named Steven finds out his little brother has leukemia. On top of that Steven has school, drums, and girls to think about. I gave Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because it was one of the best books i have ever read. It makes you cry and laugh at the same time. I like books were i can not predict the ending and this was definitely one of those books. Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie is a heartwarming book that left me thinking about the difficulties of having someone with cancer in your family. I mean imagine having cancer or the medical bills that need to be paid. What about the family falling apart? Find out about this and much more in Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick.

It is not the typical male YA author who tackles cancer as a dominating subject for a novel. Jordan Sonnenblick takes on the "disease of the week" idea and succeeds heroically with this book geared for the middle school reader.

I, too, am a male middle school English teacher (like Sonnenblick was until recently), and I am impressed that he is able to handle a tragic subject and wrap it up in a humorous first-person journal-like novel. Clearly he has both ends of the spectrum well placed in his book. My feelings that the parts in between these ends -- character development of parents especially -- is not at the same caiber. True, when taken from the perspective of the narrator (thirteen-year-old Steven), his way of seeing things does account for more pointed, if not two-dimensional, characterizations.

I did find the story a tad melodramatic and predictable, but, that said, Sonnenblick creates an honest middle school experience (sans graphic doodlings typical of every thirteen-year-old boy). Steven and Renee and Annette are not stereotypical and that is where the author truly shows his strength. When it is very easy in a humorous tale of middle school angst to go for the caricature, Sonnenblick creates more realistic, three-dimensional teens.

Overall, DRUMS, GIRLS & DANGEROUS PIES definitely deserves a read by the middle school audience, but unlike works like AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS, PETER AND THE STARCATCHERS, ONCE UPON A MARIGOLD, or STARGIRL, it won't break out of the pack and become one of those YA novels that adults pick up and savor regardless of whether they have children or not.

This past weekend I attended a Jewish Social Action weekend with 100 others hoping to have a good time and try to change the world around me and bring smiles to peoples faces. I had no idea that in the course of this weekend I would get to hear a man named Scott Fried speak. Scott Fried is one of the most amazing people I have met in my life. This book doesn't just tell the story of Scott Fried, a Jewish Homosexual from New York, it tells the story of what we all feel inside. It explains the values of self-respect and knowing that you are sacred. It pushes you to look deep within your self, and find the person you are not the person you want others to see. I would highly recommend that all of you get a chance to hear Scott in person because it truly is a life changing experience. I borrowed this book from a family member, and though it was painful, I read every one of Scott's words. The bravery and courage it took to record so much pain should be looked upon as heroism. This book is a must read for anyone who feels as though they are hiding something (and that is all of us).

This book discussed the facts of life that the great majority of us would like to ignore. It is not only personal, but extremely factual as well. I had the extreme pleasure of watching Scott speak, and it was a life changing experience. Intrigued, I purchased the book not knowing what to expect. What I got was a soul searching book that not only educated me on a myriad of different subjects, but most importantly educated me about the will to survive. It taught me about how one man had overcome so much, and how willing he was to share his feelings for the benefits of others. This is written with excellent grace and bravery. It is recommended for anyone who is not afraid to look within themselves after read how one man did.

It is the experiences of an amazing man put into words so eloquently and delicately that after reading it you will feel as though you have lived that life and been a part of everything he speaks of. If you have an interest in life, AIDS, friendship, or love... this book will speak to you. I hope you enjoy it as much as i did...

Kate McLaughlin inspires and teaches in this incredible journey through her experiences with bipolar disorder in her children. She opens her heart and deepest thoughts to the reader to allow us to join her in the emotions and roller coaster ride she lives through. This book was a quick read and will teach you about this condition but more about how a family survives together and that there is beauty and love to be found in every experience. Her writing is beautiful, riveting, real and impactful. I especially appreciate her acknowledgements that not everyone is blessed to have the resources to deal with the ongoing trials. She is a beautiful woman, mother and author and we can only hope that she will write another book to continue the chronicles so we can all benefit from her wisdom and attitude. She shows us how to live with challenges honestly, openly, and gracefully. Thank you!

This story goes straight to the soul and provides the reader an opportunity to move into deeper levels of loving, acceptance, compassion and knowledge. A must read for anyone wishing to experience an important message regarding internal balance and the connection among us all.

This book is an incredible story of family devotion! It kept me totally, emotionally engaged. I felt such a great sense of compassion for the whole family. Kate helps you "believe in" and feel the pain and suffering they must have gone through. These parents were remarkable with their struggle in keeping it quiet to most of the outside world, and also trying to maintain a normal life for their other children who did not have the illness. I commend them for their outstanding ability to regain their lives with such an amazing outlook after such a valiant fight. Kate is able to give you a profound explanation of the illness, while still keeping you immersed in her story! What an extraordinary read!!

While the subject is serious the book ends with a spirit of renewal and hope leaving the reader wanting to meet this amazing woman.

As the mother of sons, I was curious about what types of questions girls were asking about sex. What a surprise! This book is enlightening for people of all ages about today's teen sexual culture. Sexual awareness is a parent's best tool for helping their teens stay pure. The book is very well organized and easy to read, even for the preteen. It's a great book for keeping on an accessible shelf for when "those" questions might come up or to give to the preteen and teen girls you love.

I thought this book helped counter the myths and innuendo about sex that the kids of today seem to have. It is hard get the real facts about sex when the media distorts it so very much. Regardless of one's beliefs, I think that we can all agree that kids should have a proper launch into the sexual arena when the time comes. Hopefully, with books like this, it will be as adults in a loving friendship framed by marriage. The format was very teen-friendly and readable. When is the adult Unwrapped coming out? LOL

I had been reading the book for about a week when I suddenly realized that others in the home were reading it too. Husband and two teenage sons had picked it up and read some excerpts. It sparked a beneficial discussion about what they knew already and what they learned from the book. I think this is the best use of Unwrapped. It can help parents to bridge the gap between what your teens already know and what they NEED to know. The book is laid out so that teens can scan the topics and find a quick answer. No need to try and digest it all in one sitting. Most of the facts and information presented could be found elsewhere but with Unwrapped, it's all in one small, easy-to-read book.
I must admit, it was unsettling that the Islamic Qur'an was given authority alongside the teachings of the Christian Bible and the Jewish Torah in some instances and that Oprah got the last word but, overall, a good resource.

I first read this in junior high, when I tried being a vegetarian the first time. I loved it and I learned a lot from it. When I returned to vegetarianism as a young adult, I read it again. Although I'm not a teenager anymore, I feel the book is still a handy guide for making the difficult transition to being a vegetarian a lot easier. When people question the food you eat or don't eat and challenge your beliefs on the subject, it can be hard -- this book offers advice for what to do and say in all sort of situations, educates you on nutrition, and gives you basic ideas for meals. "A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian" doesn't assume you have a lot of money, time, or resources for food shopping and meal preparation (as teenagers and adults alike usually don't), so it's great for anyone who needs to be frugal or doesn't have a lot of time to search for unusual ingredients. But it does introduce you to foods you might not of heard of or tried before, which is important.

I have been a vegetarian for almost two years but I had never really read any books about it. Before I buy something, I always read the reviews, and this book had such good reviews. It is so helpful and fun to read. It has a lot of information such as what they really do to animals at slaughterhouses. It is really sad and it made me become a vegan, but it is necessary that aspiring vegetarians/vegans are aware of it. In every chapter, it has things that you can do to help. It also gives the titles of other books that you can read to find out more. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone who wants to be a vegetarian or who already is one.

This is a great book for teen vegetarians, or teens thinking about becoming vegetarians. This book has 13 chapters, each full of information.
1. What is a vegetarian, anyways?- This gives straight forward answers, and describes different kinds of vegetarians and why people are vegetarians.
2.For The Planet- About how being a vegetarian benifits the planet.
3. For The Animals- You guessed it, all about how being a vegetarian helps animals.
4. For Your Health- About how being veggie helps you. This part also dispels many myths not-vegetarians have about a vegetarian diet.
5.Making The Switch- About going from meat-eater to vegetarian.
6.What will your parents say?- I think this is one of the best chapters, as it gives lots of information about what parents may be thinking and how to convince them without being rebelious.
7. What will your fiends say?- Yet another concern to teens, this chapter deals with dealing with friends.
8. Sticky Situations- This is another great chapter for teens, that answers all those nagging questions. What about at friends houses? How about when I'm traveling?
9. Surviving at School- All about cafeteria blues, science class diesection, and ways to make changes in your school.
10. Some Nutrition Basics- Another great chapter. All the nutrition you need to know, written in a clear way for teens to understand.
11. Fabulous Vegetarian Foods- All about vegetarian foods to try.
12. The Makings Of A Meal- About what to include in yummy and healthy meals.
13. Some Recipies To Get You Started- I'll be honest, I haven't tried any of the recipies yet, but they sound great. They are written in a ay great for beggining cooks.
This book is written in a non-judgmental, just facts way, but after reading it you will probably want to be vegetarian, if not vegan. I love the way the author talked to real teens, and included their quotes, knowledge, and tidbits of information about being vegetarian. This book includes a good concrete basis on all information nessecary to a teenage vegetarian, and is written in a engaging, interesting, funny, and informative way. I wish I could give this book 10 stars, it is such a great reference for the teenage vegetarian.

I became a vegetarian almost ten years ago, and this book was released soon after I made the switch. It could not have come at a better time. I originally found it at the library, but I checked it out so many times, I knew I needed my own copy. The book really set me on a great path, and helped me deal with a number of different situations.

I became a vegetarian while I was still living at my parents' house (where every meal revolved around meat) They initially dismissed my new vegetarianism as a "phase". I was so happy to prove them wrong! This book really helped me gain confidence, and gave me the will-power and drive to stick with the vegetarian lifestyle.

This book is one of the best I've seen about the transitional issues that arise when someone with Aspergers reaches their teens. With my son, we find each developmental step has its own challenges, but the movement into middle school, with the increased expectations of self-management and the early teen student issues among peers has been a bigger challenge than most. This book helped me frame these issues as they apply to my son, improving my understanding. Then I could apply many of the ideas provided both directly and through the school. My biggest problem is that this is such a slow read ... not because it is hard to read (to the contrary, its very understandable and straightforward.) Its a "slow go" because of all of the underlining and page marking I am doing to track the "good stuff." Dr Bolick has done those of use living in these situation a major service with this work! I fully recommend it.

Finally, a book on vaccines that presented the facts, concisely. The way it was written was easy to read, and i nearly finished it in one sitting. I've read many other vaccine books, and felt that this one helped clearly answer my questions and concerns. Dr. Feder presented each vaccine in a thoughtful way, and I especially appreciated being able to review the detailed list of ingredients found in the shots. Very eye opening! I understand why it was chosen by the Holistic Moms Network 'Book of the Month Club.'

This book was great for me; it gave me information that I didn't find in other places. However, I can not say that it is impartial; it tries to correct for the widespread misinformation. It might be a good introduction to the material for some but definitely not for all, because of its bias. It can definitely help you choose what is best for your child as an individual, but it can not serve as your only source in making that choice (unless you are sold on not vaccinating at all). It simply doesn't have enough details about the actual ingredients to weigh the risks with the benefits; the author seems to conclude that none of the vaccines are worth the risks. As someone who has chosen to selectively vaccinate my children, I did find the book helpful. The first source I use is Dr. Sears' The Vaccine Book because it has factual information about the ingredients. This book is the second source I use for a little more information on the issue. I don't think this book really lives up to its subtitle "practical medical and natural ways to protect your child." Also, I agree with some other criticisms about her use of language. From an editorial standpoint, this book is not a final copy. It is only a revision or two away, but it is not properly polished. Quite a shame. I am still grateful I have this source.

As a busy working mom, I found this book presented all the information about vaccines in a concise way that was easy to understand and interesting to read. I appreciated the fact that Dr. Feder presented both sides objectively without being 'preachy.
Although, I have chosen to selectively vaccinate my children, I feel that all parents, whether they vaccinate or not would benefit from reading this fine book. It also comes with a good health and vaccine resource at the back.

This writer has done her homework. Weight Loss Confidential is well researched. In a compassionate voice, Anne Fletcher shares the real-life experiences of teens who have successfully lost weight and kept it off. Very inspiring for teens, their families and those of us who work with people struggling with their weight. In this book, we see what is possible. Overweight teens can and do learn to feel better about themselves and take better care of themselves. You'll learn their strategies for success - make a rule not to eat out of a bag or a container, swap sodas and sports drinks for water and other zero-calorie drinks, practice restraint, not deprivation. Lots of strategies for you whether you're a teen, a parent or a health professional.

I bought this book because my granddaughter is becoming overweight and I want to help her and my daughter to work on this problem. I am an RN and yet the information in this book was priceless because despite what I know and understand medically, the information on what works for the teens by teens could not be learned in nursing school. I have completed the book and have sent it on to Arizona from Texas so that my daughter and granddaughter can read it. I also took some of the information on keeping a daily journal and portion control and have lost 5 pounds since purchasing this book. I would recommend this book to all ages. The book also lists many other references for children and obesity problems.

What an excellent concept, find teens who were successful at losing weight and determine how they did it. This book has been helpful for my husband and me, and MOTIVATING for my daughter. What I like the most is you see a chart of what things the kids did to lose weight. The ones that top the list are the healthy ones (exercised more, ate less fat, ate less in general) and the ones at the bottom are unhealty (took pills, etc). PROVING ONCE AGAIN that the RIGHT/SUCCESSFUL way to lose weight is to diet and exercise. This has totally motivated her to move more, the KEY FACTOR for these successful teens.

BRAVO!!

A ton of easy to understand information for teens! My teen also really liked S.E.X. by Heather Corinna. Each gave her different information and covered simliar subjects differently.

May not be appropriate if your teen is choosing abstinence

I own Toni's first book, "TCOYF" and it completely changed the way I look at my body and my cycles. So I was thrilled that she came out with this book for teens. I purchased it with the intent of giving it to my younger sister, but after reading it; I have decided to return it.

What I loved: The first two parts (Cycle Smart and Cycle Signals) cover all the basics on the female body that I guarentee your kids will never hear about in school. :) Toni discusses the different stages in a woman's cycle, including charting your fertility signs to help understand your body. The book is very well put together with fun illustrations and page layouts. The writing is smart and fun, and very easy to read.
This book does not teach FAM as a means of birth control. In fact, I was hopeful after reading the following in the introduction: "...this book is no more a sex-education manual than it is a primer on tampons."

What I didn't love: The third part of the book (Cycle Solutions) has a chapter called "From Cycle Savvy to Sex Smart" that seemed to contradict this statment in the intro. I will conceed that from a world/secular standpoint, this chapter is presented in a very balanced way. Most of the chapter is filled with stories of teenage girls' experiences with sex. The stories cover the spectrum, from "I had sex as a teen and regret it every day" to "I waited for just the right time with my boyfriend" and everything in between. If you or your daughter are proponents of abstinence, you will definitely want to look over this chapter before buying.

From a Christian standpoint, the information presented in this chapter is completely incongruent with what the Bible teaches. As much as I love Toni and everything she has done to empower women, and as much as I loved everything else about this book, this one chapter was enough for me to return it.

I bought this for my teenage daughter having read the author's first book and having listened to her on local radio. I did not force the book on my daughter but simply left it on the table. I've watched my daughter pick it up and read from time to time and I can see she is absorbed at times. The book has a huge amount of biological science written into it yet the diagrams are illustrative of the concepts making it easier to read. We don't talk much about the topic but I am certain it is making a difference in my daughter's awareness which can only help me as a parent.

If only this book had been around when I was a teen! Great, solid information shared in a straight forward way that will assist young girls in getting past the hypersexualization that they face today and move into a core of true self respect and self esteem. This book is a blessing.

As a physician specializing in fertility, I see a lot of chronic reproductive health problems (and their devastating consequences)in my adult patients that could have been prevented if the patient had been provided with quality reproductive education as a teenager. This book provides the information young women need to make decisions at a young age that will impact their health across the lifespan. Thank you, Toni for making my job easier and for preserving the reproductive health of the next generation.
