This is the third edition I use. I am a psychiatrist but like to keep up with what happens in other fields of medicine. I use it to look up illnesses and symptoms my patients and friends com up with. I use it to get ideas about diagnoses. I believe this is a book to recommend to new doctors. Of course the articles about each somatic state are very short so they need to be followed up elsewhere. But this book is a real good starter. I recommend i warmly.

This is probably a redundant review since all the reviews are 5* reviews, but I'll give you my perspective. This is the third copy of this book I own, the other two being previous editions. If I could own only one medical book, this would be it. While it has grown ~ 500 pages since the last edition I own, it's all good. Every topic is covered both succinctly and authoritatively and kept up to date. The section on AIDS for instance was excellent, nonexistant from my previous edition. Same with Autism and countless other topics. Cross referencing this with other medical texts, time and again the information was accurate, current and on target. The editorial style between topics was consistent, highly readable and easy to absorb quickly. Sitting down to read a topic was always a pleasurable learning experience - loaded with information and to the point.Most importantly for a book of this nature the Index and Tables of contents for each chapter allow you to get to information quickly. This book makes highly effective use of your time investment in a topic.

This book ranks as THE essential book to have in any medical library, whether your library consists of one book or (as mine does), several walls of bookshelves full of books.

I am studying for NP and found this book is comprehensive, with all info you need, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, treatment...under each disease or disorder, well organized and easy to find information you need. And the price at amazon.com is lowest I ever found.

This book has been wonderful! I am thrilled to be able to use it on my journey through nursing school. This book is a pathophysiology life saver as well. The care plans listed here and the information that is in this little book make life much easier! If you are in the medical field, you should own this book. If you are someone that is interested in just learning more, you might want to try the family edition that isn't quite as technical.

I picked up Infected several weeks back and loved it so I really wanted to pick up Ancestor as well, but was shocked at the price. After a little research, like 2 minutes, I found out it was a limited print and the only way to get it is eBay or other auction sites. Any way I found the whole book available as a free pdf download (see link below) and I'm sure glad I did.

Ancestor is an excellent read if you like the sci-fi thriller / horror genre and I thought a maybe better book than Infected. The action is fast paced and the contrary to what some are saying the dialog is well written, but does fly in the face of the FCC and is pretty accurate as to how soldiers / cops speak. There's also some sexual content that may offend the Bible carrying crowd, but again nothing out of the ordinary for most of us.

As with all thrillers some of the scenes are far fetched the ending is well out there, but if you want something totally believable head over to the non-fiction works. If you liked Infected, Amazonia, Black Order, Deep Fathom, or Tyrannosaur Canyon you'll love this book. You just have to be willing to read if from your computer (which I hate) or pay the $85 price tag for a used copy.

Another great science fiction adventure novel with great characters from Sigler. I didn't like it quite as much as Earthcore, but it was still a lot of fun to listen to. Sigler does some great voices, which really adds to the fun and humor. Highly recommended.

The book is cover to cover action, spiced with science, and broiled to perfection with the flames of suspense and horror. Overall, Ancestor is a heaping helping of gory goodness that should sate the homicidal hunger of sci-fi fans as well as the mainstream horror fan.

There's non-stop action, remote islands & bioengineering gone horribly wrong...what more could you want? This one was hard to put down (or turn off if you listen to the pocast) because there was just so much happening all the time. I was riveted throughout the book and I still wonder if the end is really the end. I hope not!

Sydney Chapman, CIA agent, arrives at the Novozyme facility at the end of the meltdown. Novozyme, attempting to create an animal lifeform with human-type organs for transplantation, had broken down from a deadly virus that has jumped species and is fatal to humans. CIA director Longworth orders Chapman to wipe out all traces of the facility, and go after the three remaining facilities working on similar projects; Monsanto, Genetron, and Genada. Longworth insists on eradicating Genada first.

At Genada, three brilliant scientists believe they have discovered the key to xenotransplantation. Dr. Lin Jiandan (known as Jian) is an overweight, fifty-something Chinese woman who's genius has created the computer that can manipulate the genomes. Jian also suffers from horrible nightmares, night terrors she cannot escape from. Dr. Claus Rhumkorrf and Dr. Claudette Overgard are Jian's partners. Genada is owned and ran by brothers Dante and Magnus Paglione, Dante being the brains and Magnus the muscle. PJ Colding, Chapman's former partner, now considered a traitor, runs the Genada facility on Baffin Island in Canada. When Chapman's imbedded agent makes his move, the entire facility, along with the cows already implanted with embryos, evacuate on a massive C-5 aircraft piloted by Sara Purinam, heading for the island of Black Mantiou in Lake Superior. The C-5 is a fully equipped lab, and the island an isolated and heavily armed fortress. Keeping the island prepared is colorful caretaker Clayton Detweiler and his son Chris.

Time is running out for Genada. With the competition closing in and the CIA on their heels, Genada's future rests on the scientists and the embryos maturing in the cows. But Jian breaks down, with dire warnings that things are not what they think they are, and something is horribly wrong with the experiment.

Sigler has an extraordinary talent for attention to detail in his novels. While breathtakingly exciting in plot, he never misses the mark with his amazing ability to create fully fleshed characters. A character-driven story with a fast plot is always a not-to-be-missed reading opportunity. Sigler began his writing career using podcasts, gaining so much popularity that his novels were put into print. Sigler is now one of my favorite authors, and I can't recommend his works strongly enough. Don't miss his other works; Earthcore and Infected, and coming soon, Contagious. 'Ancestor' has the bonus of a short story added on, called 'Iowa Typhoon', an interesting but brief tale. If I could give this book ten stars I would. Though out of print, its definitely worth the used book price. Enjoy!

If you owned or knew one of the old time German Shepherds of the 1960's this is the book that will reintroduce you to these wonderful dogs of yesterday. Excellent history of the development of this breed. Do not be confused by others that call their dogs Shiloh Shepherds, make sure you are dealing with the original breed founder!

I strongly recommend this book to dog lovers who have been disheartened by the dishonesty and greed that is an all too common part of the experience when dealing with breeders. This book will re-awaken your faith in humankind and provide you with the assurance that there is still a breed of dog out there that is the intelligent and gentle hero that you have read about in story books, an ISSR Shiloh Shepherd. I bought my first ISSR Shiloh a few months ago and had her shipped to me from New York to Oklahoma. This dog is everything that was described to me and more. It was not until after I had my dog that I bought the book, now I understand that truely great things are not created without a vision and an incredible amount of sacrifice, determination and faith. Read the book, but don't be surprised if your next purchase is a Shiloh Shepherd.

I own an ISSR Shiloh Shepherd. I loved reading about the history and all the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into developing the Shiloh Shepherd! I am truly inspired by Tina Barber's strength and perseverance.

This book gave a Shiloh owner insight into the intent of the breed founder. Tina has inspired us to do whatever we can to further her dream. She allowed us a brief look into her struggles that shows us how much sacrifice is necessary to live your dream. I am telling everyone I know about this book and letting them know it's a must have!

This is one of the most heartwarming stories I have read. I will be looking to get a shiloh shepherd in the future. A must read book.

In 2006 Holiday season, I receive this book as a Christma's gift. It truly was a hallmark on my cancer research. Until nowadays we search as references the experiments and experiences united on this remarkable book. My passion and hunger on dig in all contents was like a contagious fever in my lab. All researchers acquired one issue and the one's that hasn't yet, are willing to do so. By that, Dr. Weinberg and his work became a reference in the Northeast labs in Brazil, and my personal hero. For me, a PhD student struggling to improve my skills and knowledge, it was a perfect gift from Saint Claus! In the last 2 decades research on signaling pathways in normal and cancer cells exploded. An enormous number of publications are available and it is impossible for the non -expert to keep track. This book has long been overdue, since it lifts the educated non-expert to the state of the art. It does it by wonderfully describing the chain of knowledge generation from the discovery of important genes to the actual functional, molecular signaling pathways. This book describes results from Drosophila genetics, yeast genetics, mouse and human genetics, virology and immunology which are combined to explain how cancer can develop and how it can be effectively cured. The discovery of all the major players in cancer, oncogenes, proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes and genes for apoptosis as well as the function of their gene products are described. After one reads this book, one is able to effectively and productively participate in research on cancer.
This book is nothing for novices in molecular biology. Profound knowledge in basic molecular biology as well as in the interpretation of 3-D structures of proteins is required. However, for the educated non-expert in cancer biology, this book is priceless.

This book is great! came with a CD. I received it on time . Great service for a great price.

First you must consider whom the author is- Dr. Weinberg is a member of the national academy of science and one of the most famous researchers in cancer biology, as he discovered what is still the most important oncogene in Ras, as well as probably the second most important tumor suppressor in Rb.
Of course, he's done a lot more than just that (too many contributions to list), and he's still at the Whitehead Institute.

As a student working in a cancer research lab, I found the book to be highly instructive.
Sure, I can just read review articles especially Annual Reviews for a lot of the things in the textbook, but there is no better single source for all things related to cancer in one package.
The figures are very nice as well, and they are simplified for easy viewing (FACS plot will not have jagged lines, for example).
However, the book is not missing in terms of primary data either as it has plenty of data from primary sources to demonstrate many of the points.

For example, there is a 50 page chapter on p53 alone.
You're not likely to find a 50 page review article on p53 anywhere else.
And the text is filled with recent references too, as evidenced by a 2006 ChIP paper's figure, referenced in the p53 chapter.

This is an incredible, thought-provoking true-story of a young woman who has watched her mother die from cancer and then tests positive for a gene mutation that makes her nearly 90% likely to get cancer herself. What would you do if you had that knowledge?

Author Jessica Queller eloquently takes us with us on her journey. Despite the heavy material, this book is an easy read - I read it in 2 days - because her writing is clear and the story is so engaging.... You want to know Jessica and are rooting for her all the way.

This book is for EVERY WOMAN - not just those with BRCA mutations or with cancer in their family. It is for anyone who believes that true stories often make the best books, and are drawn to the extraordinary stories of 'ordinary' people.

I read this book in one day. It's a great read. Jessica really makes you think about your options. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and the BRCA test has always been in the back of my mind. It's definitely something that needs more discussing.

I am faced with the same genetic predisposition to breast cancer and it was a life-saver to read about another person's triumph.

The author explained her gene risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer in an emotional informative way. I purchased the book because my daughter, twin sister and myself had just been tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation. Our test results are that we all have a "variant" that is the same so it is genetic but it is a variant that the lab has never seen in the whole world thus it is "uncertain" what it means other than it is genetically being passed in our family. Reading this book helped me understand gene mutations. The author truly is "beautiful" inside and out.

This book is a must for anyone with the BRCA mutation or anyone who wants to understand a woman's journey after she finds out she has a BRCA mutation. It is brutally honest and therefore, absolutely compelling. As one who has walked this path, I can tell you that Jessica is very brave to lay it all out there for others to benefit from. I wish her health and happiness.

Although I wasn't bored with this book, I felt that it missed a lot of potential and ended anticlimactically. What could have become a story of international intrigue was ultimately just another Christian romance novel. It's too bad the Christian book world rarely dares to be more.

Lara is a young woman who just lost her husband to cancer. She desperately wants to have HIS baby. So, after a few months have passed, she approaches her doctors to use frozen sperm and fertilize her egg so she can have this dream child. Unknown to her, a billionaire who wants to live forever, has bought his way into the lives of those around her, and she ends up deceived, used and humiliated.

On the run, Lara never forgets the neighbor man who delivered her baby and she returns to him for help. A high profile trial is probably the peak of this book.

Angela Hunt certainly knows how to write a mystery book!!!

Angela Hunt is one of my favorite Christian authors! THis book keeps you going to the end.

"The Truth Teller" is a great novel. The characters are very believable and the dialogue is well done. The story involves a young widow who wishes to have a baby. Her late husband has left a sperm sample, but he died of cancer. Should she risk the pregnancy? Complicating it all is an evil and rich man. This smooth operator with a hidden agenda plans to use and exploit Lara, by having her become pregnant with DNA from an "iceman" who froze to death thousands of years ago.
The story is GREAT! Many plots twists and turns. I loved it.

This is a fun read for everyone. The fight of the "regular man" against the rich-and-above-the-law is similar to the style of John Grishm. The science fiction resembles a mix of Jurassic Park and Charmed. Theologians are given many deep levels and thoughtful questions to ponder. Christians will appreciate the positive representation of the Bible-believing faith.

This was a very interesting book. The author did a good job of explaining the frustrating process of seeking a diagnosis and treatment of a rare condition. She includes a lot of useful information for those
who may have inherited this condition.

This is a great resource for the newly-diagnosed, and a well-written, gripping bio - but it is far more than that. ... What an moving reliance on the power of prayer! What an awesome testimony of faith! I loved the anecdote about the 'pennies from Heaven'!

A BIG 'thank you' to this author!I am confident that there are few people who will not profit by the information contained in this book. Especially in view of the so-called 'Pandemic which is looming over all of us, I feel that it is imperative for everyone to know how dangerous it is to be 'overloaded' with iron - which, to bacteria, fungi and viruses, is like 'fertilizer' to plants! This riveting, well-written, 'first-person' account alerts readers to the perils of iron accumulation in the body.

On another website, I saw this book described as the 'definitive book about Hemochromatosis', and I agree. However,a prominent researcher has written that it is the story of a remarkable man and an extraordinary relationship. He was right. - It's more than a layman's reference to genetic disorder. Wow. The twins' story about growing up with cystic fibrosis, their biracial family, and succeeding in going to college, finding love and ultimately receiving lung transplants is profoundly moving. Their honesty about their good (and not so good) experiences, particularly with their parents and brother, and later with boyfriends, is absolutely gripping. Their persistence and hope in the face of repeated challenges, conveyed in a well-written narrative, is awesome and makes this book a great read for anyone facing challenges or wanting inspiration.

This book gives great courage to its readers. It is at once a tale of Ana and Isa's triumph over Cystic Fibrosis and their triumph over the struggle that is life itself. Their decision to live as victors, to engage life fully and to find value and meaning in the midst of great storms is powerful. I have found strength in this book for my own personal trials and believe that others who read it will be equally moved. An amazing read. I simply could not put it down.

I agree with what Tiffany wrote before me. I'm also an adult with CF, just hit 30. I had considered writing my own little CF memoir, but these girls did such an awesome job with their vivid depiction of their experiences, thoughts and emotions throughout their lives, they covered it all. Their journey brings you into the world of all stages of CF from everyday maintenance to near death experiences, how it's changed since the 70's, the treatments, the pain and the joy in meeting others in this special CF club. As others have said, this book covers so much more. With a German father and Japanese mother, they take you through life as biracial twins in America and Japan, their travels around the world, and the amazing support they found in family and eachother, then much much later boyfriends. Their story is brutally honest about their experiences, and they've had some tough ones. What I loved most was this honesty and ability to infuse some funny in their situations and not take themselves too seriously. It's refreshing. The narration of their mother was hilarious, even though she's their biggest supporter it seems. My only complaint is I'm jealous they went to CF camp and met Bob Flanagan, the camps were gone by the time I knew they existed.

This book may be advertised as a polemic, but it actually provides straight common sense where it's most needed. In a political era where ideology often takes second place to facts, Stebbins lays the science bare on a host of controversial issues--from stem cells to genetic testing. You might not always agree with him, but he'll definitely get you thinking.

Doctor Mike Rocks! I urge you to read this book. The Dr. lays it out there, whether you know anything about science or not it doesn't matter - you will after reading this book. It's funny and really terrifying at the same time. A tell all, hard-and-slamming-clash between the myths, truths and politics behind the world of science. I couldn't put it down, bought three copies for friends. Brilliant piece of work!!

Being able to explain scientific concepts to nonscientist is an art. Michael Stebbins has accomplished the goal of explaining several areas of scientific research that sometimes gets drawn into politics (embryonic stem cell research). He takes every subject and explains it in language that the lay person can understand. He does a great job of showing how special interest groups can take some segment of the subject, distort it and promote opposition to the research and make it look legitimate to the unknowing public. We need more books like this and more scientist like Michael Stebbins!!!

Sex, Drugs and DNA is a fantastic literary find. Michael Stebbins shares a voice seldom heard in today's news and politics, that of an independent and experienced scientist. Most of what you hear on the news about science these days seems to consist of "expert" journalists with no more information on the subject they are discussing than a brief overview of a watered-down scientific abstract. This is a man who has devoted his life to science and is not afraid to give his opinions on what is wrong with today's society, and, more importantly, how these problems might be solved.

I was personally very impressed with his first chapter. It is something that I would highly recommend to most young and developing scientists. I feel it gives an honest and needed look at what they will be dealing with in the near future.

Michael Stebbins makes this foray into the world of a science an entertaining and informative journey. I highly recommend it.

After slaving away at high school and college science classes I had completely lost any interest in the subject because I assumed it was too darn hard! But this book takes a HIGHLY complex subject, and with just a few backtracks on my part for clarity, takes, genetics, DNA, and the important differences between patriarchical/matrilineal and makes them meaningful and useful. Because I am working at establishing a tribal membership, the suggested sources and unique patterns to Native American DNA increased my confidence in applying. I am already in contact with a company they recommended for Native American tribal identification. Excellent and useful purchase.

FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN GENEALOGY, THE BOOK BY MEGAN SMOLENYAK TITLED TRACE YOUR ROOTS WITH DNA IS MOST INFORMATIVE. IT IS WELL WRITTEN AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR EITHER THE BEGINNING OR PROFESSIONAL GENEALOGIST.

Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak - her real name - provides an excellent introduction of what DNA can and can not do in Genetic Genealogy.

Anyone starting their "Roots" research effort is advised to buy this book. It will help you save money by allowing DNA to focus on your line and not someone elses. Read the book for more details!

As a DNA-surname research group administrator, I tend to buy every book, VHS, or DVD I can find regarding the use of DNA research in support of traditional genealogy.

Of the 12-15 books I have purchased so far, Megan Smolenyak's touchstone reference work continues to be the one I reach for when I have a question myself.

Easily read and understood, this book makes complex concepts readily accessible with clear illustrations, definitions, real-world examples, and authoritative references when needed. I am not naturally science-minded, but as a good researcher, I want to be able to use every tool in the box. This is my go-to book for that purpose.

Buy as many DNA books and tapes as you want, but your DNA library will not be complete without this classic introduction to the concepts involved in genetic genealogy.

Even a decade ago, "genetic genealogy" barely existed as an almost science-fictional idea. Now, it's one of the most debated topics in our field and thousands of family researchers are involved in projects to identify ancestors through DNA analysis. (I'm in two projects now, myself.) It's a rather complicated subject, though, and for those (like me) who barely scraped through high school biology, the more books for beginners, the better. Smolenyak is a well-known genealogist and lead researcher for the PBS Ancestors series and Turner has become one of the principal popularizers of genetic genealogy on the Internet. The important point is that both have been pursuing family research since the days of manual typewriters and paper library catalogs, and that's the perspective from which they approach the discussion. They explain very clearly why DNA analysis can tell you only who your ancestors *aren't*, not necessarily who they *are*, and the strategic differences between researching your father's and your mother's lineage. They lay out the options and limitations among uncovering ethnic origins (what about that Indian great-grandmother?), global origins (Eastern European? or Scandinavian?), "deep maternal" ancestry (the "daughters of Eve" thing), and even African tribal origins. How do you set up a family or surname research project, attract participants, ensure their trust, and analyze and publish the results? And what do all those numbers in the lab report mean? This is very much a practical book and I strongly recommend it, perhaps in conjunction with Thomas H. Shawker's _Unlocking Your Genetic Heritage_ (2004).
