I always thought of myself as well versed on all things tied to holistic health - but Michael's book was a real eye opener. His book is exceedingly well researched and contains information I have not read elsewhere. If you are suffering from any form of arthritis - you MUST read this book. For years I imbibed in what I thought was a health drink - tomato juice with cayenne pepper. Imagine my shock when I find out from Michael's book that both tomatoes and peppers contain potent neurotoxins. By following Michael's dietary recommendations, I cured myself of arthritis in a short period. Most doctors are unfamiliar with the harm that nightshades can do. I consider this book a bible in my health library.

Nightshade Free Pain Free is well researched and well written. It gives a comprehensive and accurate description of the nightshade plants and their effect on human health. This book gives health conscious people valuable information that is not widely known. I have been diagnosed with an arthritic condition - ankylosing spondylitis - and after reading the book, I now intend to completely avoid the nightshade plants. If you are experiencing pain, it would be worthwhile to read this book and then avoid the nightshades.

In this world of increasingly complex health care issues, we are all
looking for answers, something that will finally help us feel better. In
Michael Fowler's new book NIGHTSHADE FREE, PAIN FREE a wealth of
information has been made available that points to a menacing problem
many people may be having with the consumption of nightshade foods. The
author goes through an in-depth and most informative discussion of the
history of nightshades that is both fascinating and a warning of the
problems that were to come from their increasing consumption by humans.
He covers in a very accessible and often even humorous way the
physiological effects that nightshades have upon us. The fact that the
neurotoxin solanime is not destroyed by cooking or by the human
digestive system itself should be of concern to all who consume a
nightshade food of any kind. Mr. Fowler's research is comprehensive and
easily followed by the reader. Last, but not least, is the relief I
myself have found in the elimination of nightshade vegetables from my
diet. I have suffered from migraine headaches, arthritis, and digestive
disorders for years and I am finally beginning to feel better. I
recommend the information in this book to anyone suffering as I have
been. I can see the benefits for myself and I believe the book is a real
gift to so many of us who are suffering needlessly.

I was pleased with this book. I've been a vegetarian for about a year and I wanted to know if I was getting the right amount of protein in my diet. Now I have a thorough understanding of soy, its pros and cons. I passed the book along to my daughter.

Hi,

This is an interesting book.

However they should have spent a bit more time editing the text... as there are plenty of opportunities for laying it out better or expressing ideas more clearly (expected more from a bunch of PH.D's): They tend to repeat themselves a lot in rapid succession.

The book explains the different effects of phyto-estrogens & estrogens very well but they miss the opportunity to tie this in with xeno-estrogens neatly.

This information is very relevant to women with breast cancer who want to know whether or not Soy phyto-estrogens will make things better or worst. It also relevant to women with Estrogen Dominance Syndrome that might be suffering from Endometriosis: You gain a whole new respect and understanding for the balancing role of progesterone.

It even has a few negative things to say about Soy oil (Omega 6 oils).

The book is not just for women... although the author certainly gives this impression.

To balance it up a bit they could have added a section on men... as men too can have high estrogen levels (from xenoestrogens).

However the devil is in the detail with most things... soy as well... and it seems like there's still a bit more they need to explain... and which remains unexplained in this book.

You may not be convinced but you will be better informed by the end of this book.

:-)

The best soy book I've seen.

Soy Smart Health is the best book on soy I've seen so far. Solomon et al have explored areas of soy health benefits I haven't ever considered. Their research is complete and current, with citations as recent as March 2000. This book is definitely one of the best purchases I've made this year. All of my friends have one now.

This is an excellent book and a "must read" for everyone who has diabetes or who plans meals/shops/cooks for people with diabetes. I am a registered dietitian who works in an endocrine clinic and I also have a private nutrition practice. I recommend this book to all of my patients/clients with diabetes. So many people with diabetes think in terms of can't eat this or can't eat that. It's time to think about what you can eat as well as debunk the myth once and for all that people with diabetes can't eat any sugar. This book was updated in 2007 and contains everything you need to know to eat well to manage diabetes. Also covered in the book are the lastest summary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association's 2006 updated medical nutrition therapy guidelines.

" Must reading" for all diabetics and those that love them.

This book is one of the most excellent texts of it's kind. While providing sound and applicable information for the professional, it also is infinately readable for self help. Dr. Cross is amazingly generous with his information. His writing style in interesting and clear. As someone who has studied a wide range of alternative medical practices, I really appreciate Dr. Cross's ability to boil down huge amounts of information into very practical and usable applications. All of his books are a must for someone seriously interested in bringing the maximum to their health care practice.

Statin drugs seem to be all over the news these days. Those of us who follow science/medical news read about them all the time. They're being touted as effective for all kinds of conditions, even Alzheimers! But many people don't know that statins can have unpleasant side effects, like muscle aches and pains and memory/concentration problems. THE ALL NATURAL CARDIO CURE presents a really helpful program as an alternative to statins. I like that the book has been written by a doctor and that he is willing to recommend statins when necessary, but he offers an array of much healthier, more natural alternatives including herbs and supplements. Kudos to you, Dr. Magaziner!

Among the spate of books about natural approaches to heart disease, this one stands out in its clarity and ease of use. It explains heart disease in terms that a person who's not a medical professional can understand. The "DEAR" program that is described in the book is easy to remember and also easy to follow. There is a great chapter on the types of things that get in the way of adhering to a heart-care program, something I've never seen in any other book. Magaziner is to be commended for his fine work.

I was looking for an author that understands the pain through his own experience. This was a very thorough description of complete chronic pain. His insight including social, aspects, stimas, etc. was insightful. This book is important for people with chronic pain and for those with family members and loved ones.

A fascinating revelation about the experiences of someone who must make sense out of the world in which he lives in a continuous state of chronic pain. He generates a myriad of ideas, based on his subjective experiences; some interesting, some controversial, and others quite thought provoking. It's like reaching into a grab bag and wondering what will come out next. When you're finished you are left contemplating how your own bodily pain affects your world view.

This book is an outstanding resource in finding useful caregiving tips when you really need them - which is daily. When my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, this book helped me understand how to lovingly deal with him. I knew someone who'd been through the same situations was helping our family during a difficult time. Every family member or friend affected by Alzheimer's needs to have this book!

When my husband was diagnosed with a grade 2 and 3 brain cancer last year, we searched high and low for alternative therapies while undergoing the conventional western medicine treatments. This book was the only book that did not suggest anything radical like stop chemotherapy all together. Dr. Dries introduces the concept of phytochemicals and how the amount of sunlight food absorb can contribute to our health. The book comes with a table of what to eat and in what priority that helps when you photocopy it and paste it on your fridge or take with you to go grocery shopping. Three months of raw fruit and vegetalbes is a tough thing to do especially in winter, but my husband lost his steroids induced puffiness in one week and after a massive rash attack that was probably the result of detoxing, he gradually lost weight and it stopped at his weight when he was 17. Thanks to this book, he is now healthy enough to swim up to 4 km a day, bowls 5 games a week, and does all the house work with no problems. He had miniml side effects while undergoing chemotherapy and his last scans indicated much scarring, but "no visible tumor activity." That from a patient who was told he had two years!

"Essential Fatty Acids in Health & Disease" by Edward N. Siguel,

I was lucky to find this book before it was listed here at Amazon.com. It is not promoted by a major publisher so I would not have seen it in bookstores. I was searching the Web and found the Web site of the author describing this book and the research it is based on. Since then I have given away several copies as gifts.

Although the author is M.D. and Ph.D., and did original research on essential fatty acids, he has a sense of humor and the book is very readable and entertaining. It has some sections where you will find more medical terminology, but those sections are clearly marked "For health professionals" and you may skip them.

Dr. Siguel developed a test for measuring amounts of fatty acids in the blood. He used that test to analyze the blood of healthy people and people with wide variety of diseases. He noticed that people with a disease had fatty acids in different proportions than healthy people. It appears that one necessary condition for restoring health is restoring the healthy balance of fatty acids.

The book starts by comparing types of fats: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. It explains the term essential fatty acids. I must confess my ignorance. I did not know that anything in fats was essential for life. I new about essential amino acids but not about essential fatty acids. In both cases the name essential identifies those acids that our body can't make from other ingredients. To sustain life we must get them from food. Further, the book divides essential fatty acids into two groups, known as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It describes functions of fatty acids in both groups. It describes effects of both groups on many serious diseases with more emphasis on heart disease.

I find the part that describes nutritional requirements for disease prevention even more important than the discussion of specific diseases. This describes the healthy balance of fatty acids and how to achieve it. It compares the fatty acid composition of oils available on the market: vegetable oils and fish oils. It gives hints on how to find quality oil and what to avoid. It deals with misconceptions about fats and cholesterol. It describes other nutrients required for proper utilization of fats and healthy nutrition in general. It warns about unnaturally modified fats in processed foods. This is where I first found the explanation of the terms trans-fatty acids and hydrogenated oils, why I should not eat anything that contains them, and how the ingredients list on the package will not always tell me about them.

Based on the results of his research, Dr. Siguel criticizes USDA Food Pyramid which places fats at the top and suggests that all fats should be used sparingly. He also gives some unique insights on medical research and the practice of medicine.

This book had made me curious to learn more about the role of fats in supporting human life, the subject I was so ignorant about. I have found more books that debunk the notion, until recently so fashionable, that all fat is bad. I found that different authors promote different types of fat. Many recommend mainly monosaturated oils like olive and canola. However they do not support that recommendation by the analysis of those oils or by the explanation of their role in human metabolism. This book recommends polyunsaturated oils because only they contain the essential fatty acids that our body can't make from other types of oils. It also provides detailed analysis of those oils to help you choose the one that is right for you.

I hope that further research may find some essential nutrients in bacon, but for the summary of the current research results on fats in human nutrition I still come back to this book.

I am a young mother who wants to eat well for her baby. This book explained the essence of eating polyunsaturated fats to grow a good brain. The scientific reasoning is solid, the explanations are easy to follow, and the book is easy to read because of its humorous approach. This should be required reading!
