Dissapointed b/c of printing mistake

The book itself is very informative for me because my son suffers from allergies. I was however dissapointed because the page numbers went from 1-31, 82-101, 1-31. This must have been a printing mistake! This is the kind of book you would want to look up something in the index and then find the page number but you can't do it!!!!

I would give it 10 stars

I read this book the same time my son (who is suffering from atopic eczema) started a therapy with a naturopath. To my amazement did she the exact same things recommended by the author. And even better I knew what she was doing, because I had read the book myself. After 6 years of frustration, seeing my son suffering from eczema, countless, sleepless nights comforting my son, we finally seeing improvement. It took 4 months of drastic diet changes and 4 visits with the naturopath and my son is almost symptom free. we never got that far. Who ever is affected by allergy - indirectly (as parent or caregiver) or directly - should read this book. It is easy to read (even for me - english is not my native language) and to understand. It changes the way of thinking, of why we are getting sick and that we are responsible ourselfs for the things we put in our mouth we often call food! Good luck.

Best book I ever read!

This has to be the most informative, yet easy-reading health book in existence. The author has excellent credentials and is obviously very well educated. Being sick for 23 years, this book has filled in many missing pieces to the great puzzle of my condition -- something 20-odd doctors have been absolutely no help with. If you have ANY chronic health problem or just don't feel as good as you'd like to, READ THIS BOOK! It gives you valuable information on a broad spectrum of interrelated topics and then concludes with a distinct plan of action. It kindled hope for me that I can regain my health and have a life for the first time since age 17.

Hope for allergy sufferers

Allergies:Disease in Disguise has changed my life. The author has written first a clear definition of what allergy is, and then given a plan of action to over come it. In the last few years, I have suffered from a widening array of allergies and was miserable much of the time while taking allergy medication. After following the authors directions for recovery for 4 weeks, I am recovering! I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to make some perhaps significant changes in diet.

I'm glad to read such a logically well presented book.

So many people are closed minded to the possible side effects of eating cooked and processed foods.I found the book entertaining and informative, with logical, easy to understand explanations. I just wish I could do something to help people to learn how to improve their health. I think a person's health is the most important part of life. What can you do when you're ill all of the time? This book and a few others I've read lately inspired me to change my diet signifigantly, and whenever my instructor asks me to write a paper, I usually write about a health concern that I'm interested in. It also makes me feel good that the truth is being revealed, you just have to go in pursuit of it.

Dr. Cooke does both cellular and clinical research on how to keep our endothelium and thus our blood vessels throughout our body and brain healthy and elastic. In his clinic Dr. Cooke helps those with cardiovascular disease improve their health, strength and vitality.

His research is compelling, his suggestions are being used daily in his clinic, and the recipes are tasty and offer a useful start towards a healthier diet. Who knew argenine was important!

The title of this book struck me as a bit of hyperbole, since most people think of "cure" in the sense of disease eradication. I guess that goal might be achieved in some cases by strict adherence to Dr. Cooke's guidelines, but I think the term the term "cure" in the title is better understood in the sense of "treatment for a disease". Dr. Cooke himself tells you that a clinically available test for endothelial dysfunction is still not available. It therefore seems premature to suggest that these guidelines have proven to be a real "cure" in the sense most people use that word. However, I certainly don't doubt those who say that following Dr. Cooke's advice has resulted in their feeling much better. In fact, I intend to try his two weeks of menus and diet guidelines to see if it helps me. I settled on a "four stars" for this book because first, most of the material in its 310 pages is a re-hash of information that's already available elsewhere - for example, the benefits of fruits and vegetables, fiber, soy, fish oil, various supplements, aerobic exercise; and the dangers of elevated homocystein or low HDL etc. These recommendations could be found in virtually any recent book or website aiming to educate people about preventing or treating heart disease, although Dr. Cooke (and Ms. Zimmer) do a good job of bringing these topics together and explaining how they help with one's endothelium. Second, the diet recommendations include two weeks of menus and recipes, which is alright - but I think a more practical approach is to give readers a more detailed analysis of foods they should or should not eat, and explain why. For example, Dr. Atkins (whatever else you think of him) lists foods according to whether they should be consumed frequently, moderately, or rarely. A person can then plan their own menus without trying to follow a cookbook. You may not have, for example, easy access year around to fresh bunches of watercress and arugula, or edamame. (In fairness, most of the ingredients in Dr. Cooke's recipes are commonly available). I would prefer to consult a list of many foods and see whether consuming one was likely to be of benefit or was likely to be harmful. I could then take the foods that are available, or most appealing, to me and plan my consumption accordingly. If you haven't already purchased other books which explain the advantages of a Mediterranean diet, exercise, weight loss, good and bad fats, and supplements like l-arginine and fish oil, then this book will provide information you may find revealing and helpful. The information about the role of the endothelium and nitric oxide will also be interesting to anybody dealing with heart disease and other problems related to a diseased endothelium (such as erectile dysfunction). And who knows, maybe you will be "cured".

This is an excellent book on the workings of the heart.
It explains how a healthy endotheliam releases its own nitro.
Small amounts of L-arginine potentiate nitric oxide. This process
increases blood flow and reverses heart disease. The nitric
oxide relaxes blood vessels and facilitates blood flow.
The endothelium is known to potentiate the increase in blood
flow. This book will help to formulate an optimal strategy
to deal with impediments to blood flow and nutritional issues
which are at the periphery of heart health issues. It would be
an excellent addition to the medicinal personal health library.

Dr. Cooke is the world's number one expert on the nutritional supplement l-arginine and its antagonist, asymetric dimethylarginine. It's a mouthful, but among the keys to cardiovascular health. Dr. Cooke speaks with the authority of someone who has performed a huge amount of the "bench" research himself. If you're interested in knowing about the most powerful tools available to prevent heart attack and control cardiovascular risk, Dr. Cooke's book is a crucial addition to your library.

As a practicing cardiologist who aims to achieve shrinkage of coronary plaque in patients, we've applied Dr. Cooke's concepts with great success.

My sister bought me this book, right after I had some heart palpitations and was admitted to a hospital. I read the book THREE times! Dr. Cooke verifies what I already know and believe and gave me many more additional insights as well.

But does it work? I applied Dr. Cooke's principles and after only six weeks I saw major results, confirmed by my cardiologist, as well as with blood tests.

Needless to say I bought 15 copies of the book and gave one to each of my family as presents. I will also buy more for my best friends.

This book truly saved my life.

This is an excellent book. It combines therapies from conventional treatment to alternative/complimentary treatments. It is explained so that
it's easy to understand. I appreciate this book as it opens up the different approaches that maybe haven't been explained before as a choice.

Dr. Hammerly seems like he really cares about those who have fibromyalgia.

I am the "new kid on the block" having just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of 59. Not that the symptoms are new! It was good to be able to sit up during the night when I couldn't sleep and read this very educational book by a Medical Doctor. How wonderful that there are so many resources available to folks experiencing this and other maladies. Dr. Hammerly explains everything (and I mean EVERYthing) very clearly in a way that is almost comforting. I have searched the internet and was familiar with most of the terminology. Plus I experienced my first massage treatment yesterday and much of what I just read in his book was confirmed in my conversation with the therapist. I am just thrilled to know that there is this much information available in one book. My daughter borrowed this book for me from our library, but I am going to buy one for my primary physician (a D.O.), one for myself and one for a cousin who has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book!

This book advertised with great promise. What it really does is rehash the difference between traditional American Medicine (pill pushing, basically) and alternative (or ancient) treatments. If you don't know about certain types of alternative medicine, this might be ok for you. For me, it was a waste of time and money.
I'm sure the author's heart is in the right place though.

Unless your diet is presently terrible, this book probably won't help you if you have candida, celiac disease, crohn's, ulcerative colitis, IBD, or IBS. Cabot limits meats and encourages non-gluten grains. Those of us with many kinds of digestive disorders cannot digest starches and disacharides (double sugars). I followed the Liver Cleansing Diet strictly for three weeks, but the inclusion of grains, sweet potatoes, corn, and soy made my symptoms worse than they had been before I started her diet. My bloating became so bad on this diet that I looked six months pregnant and getting worse. I eliminated soy and corn but to no avail. I then switched to Elaine Gottshall's Carbohydrate Specific Diet (Breaking the Vicious Cycle) and started feeling better within two days. My belly is board flat now, my skin looks better, my mood is good, and digestion feels so much better - after only one week! I wish I had found Gottshall years ago.

I gave the Healthy Liver and Bowel book (and the Liver Cleansing Diet) three stars because the information about the liver was well documented and important to learn. The caveat here regards impaired digestion; as long as our intestines are not functioning properly we cannot absorb the nutrients our liver needs. People with digestive disorders need a dramatically different approach.

I think Cabot is a good doctor and writer, but maybe needs to broaden her horizons. Excellent liver health CAN change our lives, but until my intestines heal, my liver starves.

This book is designed to be read by a person with no medical
or scientific background. It educates you about your digestive system is supposed to work, what can go wrong, what you can do about it, both preventive and if you are already ill. I have followed what I thought was a healthy diet for years, and some advice from this book, and motivation of understanding why, allowed me to fine tune, and start losing weight and feeling healthier already.
She does sell lots of other things, and she is more an marketer than a doctor, but her information is basic enough that her scientific knowledge is more than the average person needs to know. I read another book on the Liver by Melissa Palmer, and it talked down to the average person, and was a bit stiffer of a read. Dr Cabot truly caters to the public, and I highly recommend this book.

After my husband's doctor told him that his gall bladder was due to come out (no pain, no troubles of any kind), I asked about detox. "There is no such thing," she said. I proved her wrong with this book, and proceeded to clean out his and my liver, gall bladder, and cleaned up our diet with Sandra's help.

I also ordered her other book, and keep them both as reference. Every book I've managed to read with the same subject matter and a newer publishing date has the same info in it--I'm glad I got it from the pioneer. I STILL can't find anything new under the sun for liver/gall bladder/kidney care!

I bought this book because I was recently diagnosed with sarcoidosis, and was interested in how it had affected him. Well, he had a very unusual case of sarcoidosis, very different from what most people have, so don't read this book for that! But do read the book for the human story of living through difficulty, of striving to go on in spite of desperate circumstances. The author is a hero in my book. The writing itself could have used a little more editing, as there are grammatical mistakes and misspellings. If that sort of thing bugs you, be warned.

I just completed the revised edition (which had the editing issues corrected) as other members of my family are now reading it as well. It was enlightening to finally read a book from an average person that must deal with the same experiences as I do. I was finally diagnosed with sarcoidosis in my lungs and on my skin in 1993. The author does not flinch from outlining his most personal symptoms in a very direct approach. Considering he spent over 4 years being misdiagnosed there were several negative experiences however I did not feel that he felt any self-pity or unjustly bashed the professionals he was exposed to but instead just told the truth and in the end gives credit to those who were able to help him. For me it was a roller coaster of emotions. I appreciate the fact that he gave much due respect to God, his loving family and those who supported him. Although the book is over 300 pages, it touches on every aspect of living with chronic health conditions and the physical and mental stress involved. I admire Mr. Barr's courage to tell his story in such a direct manner and open up to the world. The only thing I found insulting about this book were some of the experiences we all experience and they needed to be told.

Finally a book on Sarcoid from the patient's perspective - Gilbert was able to put into words what I have been trying to explain and have been going through to others since I was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoid in 2000. I feel all health care providers treating Sarcoid patients should read this book to better understand what we go through - especially since the disease is so rare. Insightful, and thoughtful, I applaud Gilbert's efforts in writing the book. It really helped me as I now have someone to empathize with and have a better understand of my disease and what I have gone through and continue to go through.

A positive realistic account from an average person

I found this book to be an honest account of how an average person deals with living with a chronic health condition. Although we are all unique, I found myself in a lot of the emotions and experiences that Mr. Barr wrote about. I also had the opportunity to hear Mr. Barr speak in late 2002, where during his talk he did actually give an apology for the mistakes in the first version, along with offering to replace the old version with a Revised Edition (IE: in my copy he was given "a pair of crutches" and sent on his way). In fact, I was under the impression that the first version was unavailable as of that time (Fall 2002), but I guess used copies are still floating around. I find it a refreshing change to hear someone stand up and take responsibility for a mistake (even if others were probably responsible) then correct it, especially in such a public forum. My hat is off to you Mr. Barr! It helped me to hear the positive accounts of his support elements, as I do not have anyone that understands, except one family member who lives out of town. But now we have become closer as I appreciate her long distance support more than ever. Although our physical symptoms are different, I also related to the mental aspect of his experiences. It helped me realize even more that I'm not alone in what I feel. The book is a little long (over 300 pages) but all in all it was worth the read. The main thing I enjoyed was just hearing an everyday person's account of living with sarcoidosis. Mr. Barr, please continue to help bring awareness and discussion to our disease!

After reading an interview the Diabetes Insipidus Foundation published in their newsletter with Mr. Barr and seeing him on a Detroit TV newscast, I purchased his book and found it to be very touching, inspiring and informational in regard to understanding what patients with chronic health conditions experience. My sister suffers from sarcoidosis and after reading this book I'm able to better understand the frustrations she endures on a daily basis. Mr. Barr's straight forward, direct approach in telling his story is refreshing in this day and age. He holds nothing back! My sister also found the book something she could easily relate to and currently another friend, who also suffers from this disease, can't put it down. We need more books that tell the patient's point of view. I'm glad Mr. Barr had the courage to tell his story!

The book is nothing more than a "talking points memo" for the FDA
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 36 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-29
Very disappointed in his research. All of his studies were conducted by a government research group of somekind.

Mr. Piscatella states on page 51 that he recommends Canola Oil. Really? Is he not aware that Canola was developed from the rape seed and is thus unsuited for human consumption. Why? because it contains a long-chain fatty acid called erucic acid, which under some circumstances is associated with fibrotic heart lesions coupled with a very high sulphur content and goes rancid easily (Nourishing Traditions, 2001). Not to mention Mr. Piscatella condemns tropical oils which are high in lauric acid which are not only stable at high temperatures but has high antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Guess where lauric acid also can be found? Mother's milk and we certainly don't condemn that.........yet!

On cholesterol, he's just wrong. Or should I say the FDA is wrong. On page 21 Mr. Piscatella emphasizes the importance of LDL and HDL ratios. This is a typical FDA propaganda tool. In the book, The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnshov, MD,PhD, Mr. Ravnshov states, "LDL-cholesterol is neither centrally nor causally important, it has not the strongest and most consistent relationship to risk of CHD, it has not a direct relationship to the rate of CHD, and it has not been studied in more than a dozen randomized trials..."

Mr. Piscatella is mistaken regarding soy. He never distinguishes the difference between fermented soy products (tofu, miso) and unfermented soy products (soy milk). Asians rarely consume unfermented soy products, if at all.

One thing Mr. Piscatella is correct on is the importance of triglyceride levels and margarine and shortening products. Those products should be banned.

In my opinion, I would take this book and do almost the opposite it says and recommend the book, Nourishing Traditions, Sally Fallon/Mary Enig, Ph.D.

The book has 2 sections, the first part is an excellent resource of helpful information regarding coronary artery disease and dietary and lifestyle changes helpful in improving the health of the heart. The writing is easy to understand and backed by solid research. I would not call this a diet book so much as a Lifestyle change book based on a healthy Mediterranean approach to eating. I have tried a couple of the recipes so far and found them delicious. I highly recommend this book.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The dietician gave me strict instructions about what to eat -- something like two starches and three proteins and one fat for breakfast and on through the day in a similar vein - with little help as to how to translate that code into real-life eating.

This is where The Art of Cooking for the Diabetic came in. This book provided me with straightforward, easy-to-follow advice not only about food exchanges, but also exercise (important for pregnant women) and eating out (very helpful for the working mom).

And the recipes! I found I could still eat pancakes (Leningrad Special Buckwheat Pancakes) and pizza (sausage mini pizzas) and pasta (pasta with tomatoes and chicken) and, of course, dessert (raspberry mousse). My non-diabetic husband did not feel the least bit diet-deprived. In fact, even though my gestational diabetes has now disappeared, we still refer to Cooking for the Diabetic for some favorite dishes.

Book was in great condition, but the seller didn't "see my order" for almost 2 weeks, but then finally sent it. More the fault of not checking email or the notification system or something, otherwise it was great!

This book is like 3 books in one: one on theories behind macrobiotics, one on healing remedies through healing diets, and also one on key recipes. It's user-friendly layout can be read front to back or you can use the index in the back to look up specific ailments, remedies or concepts. There's also a self-referencing set up in that if a good food or recipe is mentioned in one of the chapters and is written in capitals, that means you can find the recipe in the back of the book. I got this book to simply develop my macro library, and I ended up not only healing a few aches and pains, but trying out a few new recipes that I now love. This book will always stay with me. It's useful to anyone at any stage of their macro adventures!

It isn't written to offer dramatizations or win converts. This is a step-by-step manual for those who seek guidance to healing through macrobiotics. And you don't have to have a "condition" to benefit from the wealth of information found in this book. Use it for deeper understanding of your body's healing potential and see what it can do for you if you care to follow the advice. This book also offers guidelines on cooking and recipes, but buying a good cookbook as a companion will provide you with a well-rounded experience. Go ahead and try it. This is powerful stuff.

I recommend this book highly. Only problem I saw with it was that sometimes the organization of the material was a bit confusing and the language seemed like it was written by a non-english speaker.

This book is an EXCELLENT reference book for the many reasons that veganism is the way to go whether it is for environmental, ethical, evolutionary, religious, health/medical, or other reasons. Though the author is sometimes sarcastic (and some people don't "get" sarcasm apparently), it is well-researched and sourced. (Though some of the citations don't match the sourced information 100% of the time.) I would recommend this book to anyone, vegan or not, who wants to learn just how important a plant-based diet is.

Plant Roots is proof as to the human animal and our diet

Plant Roots will be a great reference book for me in years to come. I love having it by my side to continue to read and go through. Many answers to my questions are all in this book. I have recommended this book to many. George Eisman R.D. is the one that brought it to my attention at the Vegetarian Summerfest 2006. He sure knows what he is talking about.

A confused political diatribe

Bowlby intermingles and confuses a variety of separate issues. The book is advertised as an evaluation of why the human body is designed for eating plant foods. In fact the book wanders far afield and spends too much time discusssing issues that are not relevant. The ethical issues of eating meat, the economical issues associated with eating meat and the political issues associated with eating meat are COMPLETELY UNRELATED to whether our bodies are designed to eat meat. If our bodies are designed to eat meat, then we have to eat meat, a fact that Bowlby cannot comprehend.

The best treatise on veganism, environmentalism, etc.

This has just become one of my favorite books of all time, dealing with the subjects of vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, ecology, the environment, world hunger and other areas. Yes, this book deals with all of these subjects. And all in one place for easy reference. This book has obviously been very well-researched and is extensively documented with numerous footnotes at the end of the book. Yet this book provides timeless (and timely) information in a very concise, and at times humorous, way. It definitely is very effective at getting the point across to anyone reading it. I highly recommend this book to everyone, both to my fellow vegans and to all the wannabes out there, as well as to everyone in between. This book provides the solid information and evidence you need in dealing with those people who constantly ask questions and who sometimes want to argue with you about our lifestyle choice. By way of comparison, in giving you the detailed information you need, this book is the M16 of books in a world of flint-lock guns. The book contains irrefutable logic. And at this price, and for being a genuine treasure trove of knowledge, it is a real bargain! Get a copy for yourself and for anyone you care about - because you will not be wanting to lend out your copy to anyone. It's that good!
As for the reviewer below, he (or she) obviously never read the book or even purchased it, to make such asinine accusations against it. This book's message is very clear and comprehensible to anyone who made it out of the first grade! This book proves, beyond ANY reasonable doubt, that we are in fact - by nature - fruit-, nut- and seed-eaters. There is no way around that. Read the book to find out why. :)

An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change

In Plant Roots: 101 Reasons Why The Human Diet Is Rooted Exclusively In Plants, Rex Bowlby strongly advocates the consumption of a vegan diet - one consisting of plant-based foods alone, with no meat, milk, or eggs. Articulately defending the vegetarian diet as healthier, more economical, better for the environment, and less likely to spread disease, Plant Roots is stringent and unashamed in its denouncement of the physical and social ills caused by meat, milk, and egg consumption, ranging from the callous disregard of animal (or dairy cow) life, to cultural and social issues of food processing technologies and practices, to the threat of food-borne diseases and increased bacteria resistance to antibiotics caused by eating antibiotic-treated meat. An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change, Plant Roots is a welcome and seminal addition to personal and professional Vegetarian Studies reading lists, as well as community and academic Health & Nutrition Studies library reference collections.

The book deals with real problems faced by real people BEFORE the introduction of modern insulin pumps. The pump solves many if not most problems discussed in the book.

Stop the food battles

One of the biggest obstacles we faced when my daughter was diagnosed at 2 was not battles over shots or finger pokes; it was over food. We were used to having pleasant, sit-down dinners as a family, but at 2 years old, she had the power to send me into panic mode when she wouldn't eat the carbs I had already given her insulin for. No amount of punishment, crying (on my part), or anything else worked to get her to understand the importance of eating what I had set out for her. How could it? She was only 2. I found this book while browsing titles and it saved our family dinner! By giving her insulin after she had eaten, I got the control over our family dinner back and it became a pleasant experience again. Also, she started eating more when she wasn't being hassled about it, and she needed to put some weight back on. We still maintained excellent control (not perfect, but ours never has been). We've had diabetes for 5 years and I'm still thankful we had a way to deal with a very trying issue at a very stressful time (diagnosis).

This book contains the most common sense, practical information I have found yet for helping manage my toddlers diabetes. This is not a medical text, but an easy to read guide for managing insulin, meals and the behavioral problems related to diabetes. There are excellent suggestions on how to not let the behavioral problems develop. I highly recommend this "down to earth" book
