I am a birthmother who just found my 21 year old daughter. I was deperately seeking a book that could help me understand all the emotions that I'm going through, and the chain-reaction of events that has happened as a result of my search. I picked up this book, read it from cover to cover at one sitting..unable to put it down. It contains a wealth of information, incredibly well-organized, well-written, and through the view point of all members of the adoption triad. It is neither preachy, text-book like, or self-serving...rather, an honest, heart-felt account of people, who have lived through the pain, joy, confusion and every other emotion that being touched by adoption brings into your life. i highly recommend it!

An excellent, honest view of the realities of adoption.

I am just finishing "Adoption Wisdom". It is probably the best I've read.
It should be required reading for all members of the triad. Since my son
found me last year, I have read about 20 books and this is one of the few
that reaches all of the members. I certainly wish I had read it years ago.
Thanks.

Although an adoptive parent for 10 years, I found many new bits of information and sensible comments in this book, compiled by an author and PhD. in family issues who is herself an adoptee.

"When I was growing up in the 1950s," she said at a recent adoption conference, "families did not discuss adoption." Children made fun of adoptees, and the notion of looking for birth parents was completely foreign, and taboo.

Now, of course, the entire adoption scene has changed radically. Families routinely adopt children and stay in touch with the birth families, allowing their children to communicate and visit with birth families as they grow.

For children adopted internationally, of course, the situation is much like it was in the 1950s for Marlou Russell. Particularly for girls from China, the likelihood of ever finding their birth parents is practically nil. So the children grow up with a hole in their hearts, forever wondering about the family they came from, and why they were abandoned.

The wonderful thing about this book is that it contains the perspectives, fears and emotions of all three members of the adoption triad-children who were themselves adopted, adoptive parents and birth parents (mostly mothers, but the occasional birth father as well).

It makes eminent sense, and it is important for all to know, that all three members of each triad have lost something and gained something.

The child has lost their birth family, and the comforts of belonging to a group with whom they share looks, likes and characteristics as well as culture, race and religion. But they have gained a family that can better care for them, ideally one far more stable than the one that was unable to do so. The birth parents have lost the joys of caring for and loving and raising their own, but gained the independence and lack of parental responsibility that their economic and marital circumstances may require. The adoptive parents have (usually, but not always) lost the ability to bear their own biological children, and gained the ability to love and raise another's child as their own.

Each one of these triad members carries lifelong wounds, which although they can heal, never disappear. For anyone in the triad who has never thought of adoption from the point of view of the others, this book is a must. For therapists and child-care workers, it is also essential reading.

For most participants in the adoption process, it is never possible to "close the door" completely to the pain they suffered. They can heal, certainly, but the loss they suffered that required adoption never goes away. It's like suffering a death in the family. The survivors live on, very often fruitfully, but they never forget.

It's my hope that this book will help my adopted child deal with his pain, just as it has helped me cope with mine.

Because of her compassion for a trapped lizard king, a young girl is rewarded with a secret magic tune to whistle and has many wonderful adventures. I read this countless times as a child in its original version, and then as an adult, tried for many years to find it for my children. This reprinted version lacks only one illustration from the original, and is still just as magical. Each chapter is a new adventure, and each holds the reader/listener enthralled. Even though this was written over 100 years ago, the magic and wonder of childhood remain ageless. My personal favorite: Brownie Jelly

This book was a gift to my great, great grandmother, shortly after it was written. She presented it, around 60 years later, to my very young mother. Since then, my great grandmother, grandma, mother, and uncle have read it. Eight years ago, when I was five, the century old, dog eared book was presented to me. I laughed, pondered and smiled with the book and Mabel. This child's story is a must-read for any one who is young, or young at heart.

I remember reading this book when I was nine. When I became a mother, this was THE book that stood out in my memory as a must have for my daughter. She is only a few months old, and already I am getting her a copy to hopefully pass down to her children some day. It is amazing how, decades later, I still remember the delight I got from reading these stories. I believe that any child that reads them can't help but end up make believing that they have these wonderful adventures, just like Mabel. These stories will delight a child's imagination and remain in their memory for years to come!

This story was read to me in 2nd grade, and I thought it was the most beautiful and magical book I had ever read. It opens up a child's imagination, and makes you think you yourself are Mabel, having the wonderful adventures she does. It has been an EXTREMELY long time since I read this book, but I remember every detail vividly, as I will probably always do. I recommend this story to everyone, people of all ages. I will forever cherish the memories of this book in my heart.

I remember reading this book over and over again as a child. I remember the tablature in the book, for the song that Mabel whistled to call the animals, and I remember playing the notes on the piano, so that I could memorize the tune in my head. I whistled that tune to every animal that I encountered for years, waiting for the magical response! I still remember the tune in my head today, and I have taught it to my daughter, hoping to find a copy of the book for her to read! I very nearly named my daughter after Mabel, because my memories of her are so vivid and wonderful!

A Must Have Book for Folks with A New Life-altering Diagnosis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-23
After the Diagnosis by Donna L. Pikula, D.D.S., M.S., lives up to its subtitle: How to Look Out for Yourself or a Loved One. This 275-page book may be one of the best self-help books available for the lay reader receiving a new diagnosis of life-altering concern.

Most self-help books in the health area come from authors who are professional experts or experiential experts. In this case, Dr. Pikula brings to her writing both her expertise as a medical professional and as a patient frustrated by the elusive symptoms of a thyroid condition that began to defy a timely diagnosis.

Early in the book, on page 9, she advises readers to become "SMART" patients who:

* Seek help
* Make decisions, plans, and organize care
* Ask questions
* Research and investigate
* Trust their own instincts

Much of the needed reseach for becoming a "SMART" patient can be found right in the book, which provides detailed information about understanding the basics regarding:

* Medical terms
* Common medical texts
* Prescription drugs
* Common medical abbreviations
* Various medical professionals and specialists

In addition, the book provides information that helps readers research individual diagnosis, find supporting associations and resources, and create their own medical plans. The information I appreciated most in the book was the attention focused on patient advocates, medical errors, and the use of writing to cope with the new diagnosis.

Patient advocate information includes:how to choose one, work with one, and set expectations. The author even provides a patient advocate form, which includes necessary contact information as well as where to locate legal papers if needed.

Unfortunately, medical errors and less than quality care can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. When it comes to health care, patients and their advocates need to verify information and double check everything they can! These extra steps may take a little more time, but it is the best way to protect their or their loved one's health.

I think all writing can be therapeutic and provide for improved well-being and health. When the chips are down, the most practical of writing can help the most: list making, filling out forms, and asking questions. The author provides a robust appendix to guide the reader and patient through these three forms of writing.

* Buy the book for yourself if you are a patient with a diagnosis that challenges you.
* Buy the book for a friend or relative with a challenging diagnosis.

If you are a physician or other health care provider taking care of patients with new and major diagnoses, don't buy the book. Buy a whole case of books and give a copy to each of your patients receiving a new diagnosis of significant concern.

So you, or a close friend, have been diagnosed with a medical condition; what do you do next? The purpose of this book is to answer that question. No matter what the diagnosis several things should be done for all medical conditions. This book walks the reader through the process of selecting a patient advocate, dealing with medical alert information, defining the specific disease or condition and it's current status, questions to ask after the diagnosis, medical terms, common medical tests and how to read the results, prescription abbreviations, provider abbreviations, medical and dental specialists, how to research your diagnosis, creating a plan of care, dealing with insurance, and other factors involved in taking charge of your care.

The book is well written in terms of both the patient's needs and the needs of someone else caring for a loved one. The text is easy to understand and follow and includes several simple forms to help you organize information and create your personal care plan. The only shortcomings are the lack of an index and the listing of resources for researching your diagnosis is by no means an exhaustive listing of all authoritative resources. On the other hand, such a listing of authoritative resources for all possible conditions would be a major work in itself and the limited listing is understandable.

All things considered, After the Diagnosis is an excellent resource for those diagnosed with a disease or medical condition. By providing a positive plan of action during a time when you might not be thinking at your best it allows you to take control of your health and treatment plan. After the Diagnosis is highly recommended.

After the Diagnosis: How to Look Out for Yourself or a Loved One is a straightforward guide to being a smart patient even when confronted with a grave medical problem. Chapters offer no- nonsense practical advice on how to choose a patient advocate, the importance of asking the right questions, how to read test results and prescriptions, how to locate associations with reliable information about health conditions or services, how to find the best hospitals, care centers, and specialists, and much more. After the Diagnosis is a compendium of general advice; it does not cover specific diseases in depth, but rather gives the reader the basic tools to deal with any severe medical issue. A plain-terms, layperson-friendly guide, highly recommended.

This is a great source of information and very clear definitions of many of the key issues relating to Airport Management and Operations. Although written primarily from the European and Asia Pacific Airport and Airline perspectives, the author has worked very hard to include North American issues and examples. As The Airport Industry moves continually towards privatization, these differences will move to the background and be less obvious; and less important. This is a great starting place for the researcher or the occasional affectionato

This book provides a thorough analysis in all facets of airport operations and provides the reader with a logistical insight that is unmatched. While the book provides a great overview, it lacks information particularly on air cargo development and facility planning at airports. While the growth in air cargo traffic significantly outpaces passenger growth, air cargo development issues at airports become more significant. Air cargo development issues must be addressed by airport authorities. This book only makes scant reference to this. However, "Airport Operations" is a valuable book to all airport authorities, consultants and transport researchers. No doubt, a very timely piece of information.

A lot of examples shows how absolutely everything could be attacked and corrupted in the chain of components used for building ajax applications, from css (yes even css) to html, from javascript to http, from browser to server ... Sometimes there's too much lines about evident things and sometimes things seems more proof of concept than real possible attacks. But these guys know what they are talking about. This is an excellent book that every serious ajax developer must have read, specially if they plan to make mashups or let their users bring and share things using their applications.

Ajax Security was the last book I read and reviewed in 2007. However, it was the best book I read all year. The book is absolutely compelling and every security professional and Web developer should read it. It's really as simple as that.

I am not a Web developer. I was not very familiar with Ajax (beyond its buzzword status and a vague notion of functionality) when I started reading Ajax Security. I attended the authors' Black Hat 2007 talk and was thoroughly impressed and disturbed by the security implications they presented. I expected Ajax Security to be a good book, but one can never be sure if talented hackers and presenters can transfer their skills to the written word. Ajax Security gets the job done.

Despite being a traditional network security guy who prefers inspecting traffic to analyzing JavaScript, I had no problem understanding Ajax Security. The authors do a superb job leading the reader through the issues surrounding modern Web applications. They start by introducing a technology, which is critical for someone like me who doesn't deal with Web development issues. Next they describe how it is broken. They continue with defensive recommendations and summarize their findings in the conclusion. This is a perfect technical writing style that is too often lost on other authors.

Ajax Security makes very good use of case studies (both large stories like ch 2 and small ones throughout the text). The book also integrates code, diagrams, and screen shots. The text itself is very clear and the authors keep the reader's attention throughout. Histories for various technologies provide a welcome background, showing readers how we've ended up in our current Web 2.0 predicament.

If you'd like a positive critique of the technical components of the book by someone who is a Web expert, I recommend reading Dre's review of Ajax Security in the TSSCI-Security blog. Otherwise, I give my highest recommendation to Ajax Security, as my Best Book Bejtlich Read in 2007 award.

Are you a web developer? Do you believe you can ensure that your client-side code will function as expected? Well, you are wrong. In Ajax Security you will find out why.

Ajax changes the game in that it moves business logic to the client. In doing so it increases the attack surface of the application. The authors get curious with some real world Ajax frameworks such as Prototype, Dojo, and Microsoft Ajax. They demonstrate with these frameworks how developers might be unknowingly building vulnerabilities into their applications. If you're home brewing Ajax, the authors cover important security considerations you'll need to know so that you don't make the same mistakes the industry leaders have made.

I learned a lot about JavaScript from reading this book. I learned even more about how JavaScript can be used maliciously. The authors describe techniques for function clobbering, JSON hijacking, storage attacks, and presentation layer attacks. One of my favorite parts of the book, not to mention one of the scariest, is an explanation of how to hide malicious JavaScript from signature based anti-virus software.

The authors explain why the Same-Origin Policy is broken and how it can be subverted. Also covered are security considerations for offline applications. An in-depth analysis of Ajax worms is covered. If you are curious about how Ajax is changing web security you should read this book. If your are a web developer or a security professional you should read this book, even if you aren't using Ajax. If you don't believe cross-site scripting is a "big deal", I dare you to read this book and maintain the same opinion.

how to prevent web/ajax attacks

Anyone involved in developing/testing AJAX should read "AJAX Security." It covers preventing a hacker from attaching your application. The audience includes developers, QA and penetration testers. While there are code snippets, they are explained well. While managers aren't in the target audience, I think they could benefit from understanding the concepts presented in the book.

The book begins with a brief review of AJAX architecture with an emphasis on security. The writing style is quite engaging including a chapter walking you through an attack from a hacker's point of view. All the major known categories of attacks are included including resource enumeration, parameter manipulation (with SQL and XPATH injection), session hijacking, JSON hijacking, XSS, CSRF, phishing, denial of service, etc.

I particularly liked the analogies to things that happen in the physical world such as resource injection into a roommate's "to do" list and hijacking another customer's paid order in the deli. These made it easy to visualize the problem even for people who don't code often.

The authors were realistic and included the limitations and drawbacks of each tool/framework mentioned. I liked the chapter analyzing two major JavaScript worms including the source code. This really hit home on the importance of certain practices!

All information was up to date as of printing including comments on all four major browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari.) They even mentioned the HTML 5 specification. The book is not server side language specific, which was nice.

It truly is a "Caregiver's Companion" and a must-have for every caregiver. When the baby-boomers become aged (and it's starting to happen), a huge percentage of the population will require caregiving. This book gives resources and checklists, along with anecdotal stories from the people in the trenches. What a great book. This book is a complete reference for family caregivers. Editor, Beth Witrogen McLeod, founder of the National Family Caregivers Association, presents an excellent guide for family caregivers. Rosalynn Carter has written a forward highly recommending the book to "family caregivers and those who support them".
McLeod includes clues for realizing when parents and older relatives need help and how to go about helping in a sensitive, understanding way. She provides checklists for all the many facets of caregiving such as gauging the skills of a patient, questions to ask the medical professionals, ways to arrange the household for easier access and whether the caregiver is taking care of herself.

There is an extensive list of other resources at the back of the book.

Now that I'm on my second go-round as a caregiver for a parent, I thought I knew the ropes fairly well. So I wasn't expecting much new information from this book.

I was wrong.

There's plenty of up-to-date help in this volume -- from assistance with legal affairs through taking care of the caregiver -- especially when that caregiver is you. While it does not cover any particular topic in great depth, it is a well-thought-out overview of the caregiving process.

If you're just getting started as a caregiver, this book can give you plenty of solid help!

This book is excellent. It is attractively presented, and masterfully done. The entire 1979 book (except for the ordination of bishops) is offered in traditional English in a thoughtful and careful translation. This is not simply a case of changing "you's" to "thee's and thou's." Also included is a nice selection of other devotional material, and ancient liturgical rites of Western Christianity. This volume is really the "best of both worlds" as it takes into account the excellent liturgical scholarship found in the 1979 American BCP, and the beautiful and rythmic English of the 1928 book. In addition to the 1928 Eucharistic Prayer, this book also includes Eucharistic Prayer II, and Eucharistic Prayers A,B, and D, all in "Rite I" English. In addition, a traditional English translation of the Gregorian Canon, and the Canon of the 1549 prayer book are included. ... With the wealth of material in The Anglican Service Book, you can be as "high" or "low" as you like, and still use classical English!

This volume picks up where the 1979 Book of Common Prayer leaves off. It provides high-quality traditional-language texts for items offered only in quasi-English newspeak in the BCP. Editing is scrupulous, and the book itself is handsomely laid out and printed. Among the goodies in an appendix are the Roman Canon in Miles Coverdale's translation, the 1549 BCP canon, and a form of blessing with water from the holy well at Walsingham. Already in use in many Anglo-catholic parishes, and a boon to lay folk also.

A Great Book for Lovers of Traditional Language & Liturgy

For those of us who aren't super happy with the "modern" language portion of the 1979 BCP, this book will make you glad! The services that aren't available in traditional language in the 79 BCP comprise most of that book's content. This book corrects that oversight and more. ALL the services of the 79 BCP are included in this book plus several others, mostly leaning to the Anglo-Catholic side of things. Since I tend to lean that way that's a very good thing as far as I'm concerned! The Psalter is from the 1928 BCP. All in all it's an improved version of the 1979 BCP. Highly recommend it.

This should be the Prayer Book, IMHO.

This is the book that won me to Anglican Catholicism...and the book my parish worships with. The beauty of the language throughout, along with the solid collection of services, prayers, and othersuch, provides the user with a wonderous worship resource. I don't know when this book will be available again for purchase, but if you are Anglo-Catholic, and you are looking for an excellent devotional resource...pick this one up!

Our Vestry was so impressed with the accuracy and beauty of the language that we purchased enough for the whole parish. God's work through this book in the Church of the Holy Communion, Charleston, SC has transformed our worship service from beautiful to heavenly. A "must have" for those who wish to ascend to the altar and step into the divine liturgy of His Kingdom. Surrounded by angels, archangels, and all the heavenly hosts, we enact the worship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and this prayer book is a worthy aide for the journey.

I, too, read this in the 1980s and still love it...I re-read it periodically and it still makes me laugh and grin. I marvel at how a simple Wildfire romance paperback has stuck with me all these years, timeless and well-written and so funny! Marnie's teen sensibility is intelligent and rings true as it evolves from self-absorption to responsible, even inspirational, maturity. One scene of enviable closeness between mother and daughter is particularly sweet, and all that she learns about self-sustaining farming is told with witty candor. A treasure!

I LOVE this book!

I read "An April Love Story" when I was about sixteen (1986), and I loved it. It is a teenage romance novel, but it's clean and a sweet story. Marine is a high school girl who lives with her parents in (if I remember correctly) New York City. She loves her life and her friends. Her parents' best friends have a son, Lucas, who goes to school with Marine, but she keeps her distance. He's kind of quiet and serious and pimply. Anyway, one day she comes home to discover that her parents and her parents' friends (Lucas's parents) have decided that all of them are going to move to a farm in North Carolina and "live off the land" together. They use no electricity, no indoor plumbing, no store bought convenience foods. They wear no make-up and sew all their own clothes. The parents love their new life while the two kids silently hate it but endure it since their parents are so giddy. Eventually, Marine starts to see Lucas through different eyes. He becomes tan and muscular from all the outdoor labor, and his skin clears up. Marine has a girlfriend who thinks he's good-looking. Marine starts acting differently around him, and soon they fall in love. Anyway, it's a wholesome, sweet story clean enough for your teenage daughter to read.

Marine MacDonald is in love with Joel, the all-American jock at her school and everything seems perfect in life when-BHAM! Her parents break the news to her that they're moving. And it isn't just Marine's family that is moving with her-her parents' friends and their annoying son Lucas, whom Marine despises, are moving with the MacDonalds. Could life get any worse? Apprently so, because the farm in North Carolina is to be shared by both familes, and in an attempt to simplify life and get back to nature, (in a sort of Amish-Commune way) there will be no telephones, electricty or grocery shopping. No more make up, fast food, or after school activities either. In fact school takes a back seat to helping her parents on the farm since milking goats, picking apples and making sweaters is the only way the families want to earn money.

Suddenly, things start to change for Marine; Lucas doesn't look so annoying anymore and life isn't as dismal as it once seemed. Marine starts to fall in love with him. The only problem? Lucas doesn't realize she even likes him!

A romance through and through, this is one of Cooney's first books for teenagers and a wonderful read on a rainy day.

Poor Robert, all innocent, on his way to school, on the first day of April--sees one rabbit. The next day he sees two rabbits. On the tenth day he sees ten holes in the lawn with rabbit ears sprouting happenstance. On the sixteenth Robert finds sixteen rabbits making double-decker peanut butter and radish sandwiches in the kitchen. On the twenty-fifth Robert gets just the book he wants at the library even though twenty-five rabbits are in line in front of him.

And so it goes, all the way to the twenty-ninth when Robert sees twenty-nine rabbits with suitcases tiptoeing down his driveway and out of sight. On the last day of April Robert does not see a single rabbit. But that night....

So what is the point of this little book about rabbits and Robert? Will your child notice that the story begins on April Fool's Day?

Perhaps as a teacher you want to reinforce numbers and counting and distinguishing among the multitude of rabbits in the larger gatherings. Perhaps you want to duplicate some of the pages (all?) and have each child color one, then line them up around the room to practice counting 1-30. (The pages resemble coloring book pages.)

Perhaps you want to practice anticipating and predicting what happens at the very end when night comes.

This book about Robert and the rabbits is a little gem of possibilities.

This book is an excellent introductory resource for individuals working in an aquatic environment. While the text is geared toward Aquatic Fitness Professionals it contains fundamental information necessary for anyone working in the continuum of Aquatics to Aquatic Therapy. Although the information is basic, the book contains information often over-looked by clinicians unfamiliar with the water environment. It possesses the elements that transition a therapist from a land based practice to the world of immersion.

As a professional who lectures and writes about Aquatic Therapy, I often use this book as a reference. It is destined to become a standard book in the aquatics arena. Ruth Sova's style is knowledgeable and informed, yet pleasant and easy to read.
