An excellent, honest view of the realities of adoption.Review Date: 1997-03-16
A "Must" ReadReview Date: 2003-09-02
It should be required reading for all members of the triad. Since my son
found me last year, I have read about 20 books and this is one of the few
that reaches all of the members. I certainly wish I had read it years ago.
Thanks.
Instructive, and soothingReview Date: 2006-04-17
"When I was growing up in the 1950s," she said at a recent adoption conference, "families did not discuss adoption." Children made fun of adoptees, and the notion of looking for birth parents was completely foreign, and taboo.
Now, of course, the entire adoption scene has changed radically. Families routinely adopt children and stay in touch with the birth families, allowing their children to communicate and visit with birth families as they grow.
For children adopted internationally, of course, the situation is much like it was in the 1950s for Marlou Russell. Particularly for girls from China, the likelihood of ever finding their birth parents is practically nil. So the children grow up with a hole in their hearts, forever wondering about the family they came from, and why they were abandoned.
The wonderful thing about this book is that it contains the perspectives, fears and emotions of all three members of the adoption triad-children who were themselves adopted, adoptive parents and birth parents (mostly mothers, but the occasional birth father as well).
It makes eminent sense, and it is important for all to know, that all three members of each triad have lost something and gained something.
The child has lost their birth family, and the comforts of belonging to a group with whom they share looks, likes and characteristics as well as culture, race and religion. But they have gained a family that can better care for them, ideally one far more stable than the one that was unable to do so. The birth parents have lost the joys of caring for and loving and raising their own, but gained the independence and lack of parental responsibility that their economic and marital circumstances may require. The adoptive parents have (usually, but not always) lost the ability to bear their own biological children, and gained the ability to love and raise another's child as their own.
Each one of these triad members carries lifelong wounds, which although they can heal, never disappear. For anyone in the triad who has never thought of adoption from the point of view of the others, this book is a must. For therapists and child-care workers, it is also essential reading.
For most participants in the adoption process, it is never possible to "close the door" completely to the pain they suffered. They can heal, certainly, but the loss they suffered that required adoption never goes away. It's like suffering a death in the family. The survivors live on, very often fruitfully, but they never forget.
It's my hope that this book will help my adopted child deal with his pain, just as it has helped me cope with mine.

A Must Have Book for Folks with A New Life-altering DiagnosisReview Date: 2008-01-23
Most self-help books in the health area come from authors who are professional experts or experiential experts. In this case, Dr. Pikula brings to her writing both her expertise as a medical professional and as a patient frustrated by the elusive symptoms of a thyroid condition that began to defy a timely diagnosis.
Early in the book, on page 9, she advises readers to become "SMART" patients who:
* Seek help
* Make decisions, plans, and organize care
* Ask questions
* Research and investigate
* Trust their own instincts
Much of the needed reseach for becoming a "SMART" patient can be found right in the book, which provides detailed information about understanding the basics regarding:
* Medical terms
* Common medical texts
* Prescription drugs
* Common medical abbreviations
* Various medical professionals and specialists
In addition, the book provides information that helps readers research individual diagnosis, find supporting associations and resources, and create their own medical plans. The information I appreciated most in the book was the attention focused on patient advocates, medical errors, and the use of writing to cope with the new diagnosis.
Patient advocate information includes:how to choose one, work with one, and set expectations. The author even provides a patient advocate form, which includes necessary contact information as well as where to locate legal papers if needed.
Unfortunately, medical errors and less than quality care can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. When it comes to health care, patients and their advocates need to verify information and double check everything they can! These extra steps may take a little more time, but it is the best way to protect their or their loved one's health.
I think all writing can be therapeutic and provide for improved well-being and health. When the chips are down, the most practical of writing can help the most: list making, filling out forms, and asking questions. The author provides a robust appendix to guide the reader and patient through these three forms of writing.
* Buy the book for yourself if you are a patient with a diagnosis that challenges you.
* Buy the book for a friend or relative with a challenging diagnosis.
If you are a physician or other health care provider taking care of patients with new and major diagnoses, don't buy the book. Buy a whole case of books and give a copy to each of your patients receiving a new diagnosis of significant concern.
Highly RecommendedReview Date: 2007-01-20
The book is well written in terms of both the patient's needs and the needs of someone else caring for a loved one. The text is easy to understand and follow and includes several simple forms to help you organize information and create your personal care plan. The only shortcomings are the lack of an index and the listing of resources for researching your diagnosis is by no means an exhaustive listing of all authoritative resources. On the other hand, such a listing of authoritative resources for all possible conditions would be a major work in itself and the limited listing is understandable.
All things considered, After the Diagnosis is an excellent resource for those diagnosed with a disease or medical condition. By providing a positive plan of action during a time when you might not be thinking at your best it allows you to take control of your health and treatment plan. After the Diagnosis is highly recommended.

The book begins when a patient receives a serious diagnosis and meticulously takes you step-by-step through the medical process offering useful tips, questions and forms to help anyone easily create a complete medical file. It also discusses the importance of having a patient advocate.

Every ajax developer must read itReview Date: 2008-02-17
2007 Best Book Bejtlich Read award winnerReview Date: 2007-12-31
I am not a Web developer. I was not very familiar with Ajax (beyond its buzzword status and a vague notion of functionality) when I started reading Ajax Security. I attended the authors' Black Hat 2007 talk and was thoroughly impressed and disturbed by the security implications they presented. I expected Ajax Security to be a good book, but one can never be sure if talented hackers and presenters can transfer their skills to the written word. Ajax Security gets the job done.
Despite being a traditional network security guy who prefers inspecting traffic to analyzing JavaScript, I had no problem understanding Ajax Security. The authors do a superb job leading the reader through the issues surrounding modern Web applications. They start by introducing a technology, which is critical for someone like me who doesn't deal with Web development issues. Next they describe how it is broken. They continue with defensive recommendations and summarize their findings in the conclusion. This is a perfect technical writing style that is too often lost on other authors.
Ajax Security makes very good use of case studies (both large stories like ch 2 and small ones throughout the text). The book also integrates code, diagrams, and screen shots. The text itself is very clear and the authors keep the reader's attention throughout. Histories for various technologies provide a welcome background, showing readers how we've ended up in our current Web 2.0 predicament.
If you'd like a positive critique of the technical components of the book by someone who is a Web expert, I recommend reading Dre's review of Ajax Security in the TSSCI-Security blog. Otherwise, I give my highest recommendation to Ajax Security, as my Best Book Bejtlich Read in 2007 award.
Ajax SecurityReview Date: 2008-03-10
Curiosity Killed the InternetReview Date: 2008-02-05
Ajax changes the game in that it moves business logic to the client. In doing so it increases the attack surface of the application. The authors get curious with some real world Ajax frameworks such as Prototype, Dojo, and Microsoft Ajax. They demonstrate with these frameworks how developers might be unknowingly building vulnerabilities into their applications. If you're home brewing Ajax, the authors cover important security considerations you'll need to know so that you don't make the same mistakes the industry leaders have made.
I learned a lot about JavaScript from reading this book. I learned even more about how JavaScript can be used maliciously. The authors describe techniques for function clobbering, JSON hijacking, storage attacks, and presentation layer attacks. One of my favorite parts of the book, not to mention one of the scariest, is an explanation of how to hide malicious JavaScript from signature based anti-virus software.
The authors explain why the Same-Origin Policy is broken and how it can be subverted. Also covered are security considerations for offline applications. An in-depth analysis of Ajax worms is covered. If you are curious about how Ajax is changing web security you should read this book. If your are a web developer or a security professional you should read this book, even if you aren't using Ajax. If you don't believe cross-site scripting is a "big deal", I dare you to read this book and maintain the same opinion.
how to prevent web/ajax attacksReview Date: 2008-01-20
The book begins with a brief review of AJAX architecture with an emphasis on security. The writing style is quite engaging including a chapter walking you through an attack from a hacker's point of view. All the major known categories of attacks are included including resource enumeration, parameter manipulation (with SQL and XPATH injection), session hijacking, JSON hijacking, XSS, CSRF, phishing, denial of service, etc.
I particularly liked the analogies to things that happen in the physical world such as resource injection into a roommate's "to do" list and hijacking another customer's paid order in the deli. These made it easy to visualize the problem even for people who don't code often.
The authors were realistic and included the limitations and drawbacks of each tool/framework mentioned. I liked the chapter analyzing two major JavaScript worms including the source code. This really hit home on the importance of certain practices!
All information was up to date as of printing including comments on all four major browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari.) They even mentioned the HTML 5 specification. The book is not server side language specific, which was nice.

Excellent guide for family caregiversReview Date: 2006-03-10
McLeod includes clues for realizing when parents and older relatives need help and how to go about helping in a sensitive, understanding way. She provides checklists for all the many facets of caregiving such as gauging the skills of a patient, questions to ask the medical professionals, ways to arrange the household for easier access and whether the caregiver is taking care of herself.
There is an extensive list of other resources at the back of the book.

I was wrong.
There's plenty of up-to-date help in this volume -- from assistance with legal affairs through taking care of the caregiver -- especially when that caregiver is you. While it does not cover any particular topic in great depth, it is a well-thought-out overview of the caregiving process.
If you're just getting started as a caregiver, this book can give you plenty of solid help!

If you see a rabbit on the first....Review Date: 2008-07-15
And so it goes, all the way to the twenty-ninth when Robert sees twenty-nine rabbits with suitcases tiptoeing down his driveway and out of sight. On the last day of April Robert does not see a single rabbit. But that night....
So what is the point of this little book about rabbits and Robert? Will your child notice that the story begins on April Fool's Day?
Perhaps as a teacher you want to reinforce numbers and counting and distinguishing among the multitude of rabbits in the larger gatherings. Perhaps you want to duplicate some of the pages (all?) and have each child color one, then line them up around the room to practice counting 1-30. (The pages resemble coloring book pages.)
Perhaps you want to practice anticipating and predicting what happens at the very end when night comes.
This book about Robert and the rabbits is a little gem of possibilities.
