The book came quickly and in perfect condition. I am using it for a college research paper, but haven't looked inside yet to find the relevant information. I would certainly order future products from this vendor.

This book is much more than the title implys. While it is a through analysis of why the war on drugs is failing it is also visionary in its view of the future. The implications of the next "post drug war era" are explored with a focus on what this means for treatment, prevention and enforcement. Quite simply this book is a must read!

It does not call for repeal, a terrible mistake.

"Drug War Politics" is an informative work and a must-have for the freedom fighter. Unfortunately, like all other published works except for one, it does not call for the repeal of prohibition. This is a dreadful oversight and it shows just how institutionalized tyranny has become in America.

Calling for reform, legalization, harm reduction etc., simply concedes the "right" of government to prohibit. No such right exists because prohibition laws are repugnant to the spirit of our fundamental legal source: The Declaration of Independence.

I've studied and written volumes on this subject only to discover that the Establishment Curtain makes the Cold War Iron Curtain look like the sheerest of negligees.

If you want the WHOLE truth you must always follow the money trail to its very end. In the case of prohibition you will discover an ever-growing JUDICIAL INDUSTRY that "legally" preys on harmless humans and the taxpayers for $billions annually. This is the best kept secret in America.

There are but two types of crime. Force and Fraud. Self-medication is neither. Either this is a secret kept from America's legislators and judges or they have taken criminal license with our Constitution's Comerce Clause.

Folks, it's time to unshackle our grand juries by making them fully aware of their right to function independently and issue presentments.

Our Nation's Drug War Nightmare
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-04
This five year old book is regrettably as relevant as if put together yesterday. The authors deplore the use of mind altering drugs. Eva Bertram and her cohorts, however, are "troubled by a common pattern in public policy: the persistence of unworkable (criminal justice) policies in the face of overwhelming evidence of their failure...It seemed to be conventional wisdom that the reason force had not worked was not that enough had been applied and that the logical response, therefore, was escalation--not reevaluation."

The vice of political correctness is not limited those of a more Liberal temperament. William F. Buckley is cited as one of the few high profile conservatives willing to publicly challenge the Republican status quo. Politically powerful conservatives relish in "viciously attacking and demeaning critics and sidelining pragmatic alternatives. Less zealous conservatives and liberals, many of whom are skeptics or closet critics, have been willing to go along or have chosen to remain silent," add the authors. Democrats such as President Jimmy Carter attempted to redirect our efforts to treating mind altering drugs as primarily a medical problem. The ensuing tidal wave of public outrage severely threatened his political power. George W. Bush won the 1994 Texas Governors race in part by successfully attacking Texas Democrat Governor Ann Richards for the latter's "actively pushed diversion-to-treatment and in-prison treatment programs in the early 1990s."

The authors point out that our country has reversed its original relative indifference to the mind altering drugs of choice. Logically it is difficult to distinguish between the harm caused by alcohol, tobacco, marihuana, or cocaine. Heroin, many studies indicate, is far less damaging than alcohol. Another fly in the ointment is the problem of police corruption. Edgar J. Hoover was hesitant to involve the FBI for this very reason. "The logic of the drug war creates enormous pressures," the writers also reveal "to circumvent or transgress...constitutional rights." The Catch 22 circumstances of the drug wars "guarantee that poor and minority residents will be netted by the drug-enforcement system in highly disproportionate numbers." Police agencies prefer going after easier convictions to augment their overall numbers---amd if nothing else, people mired in poverty are easier to send to jail because they rarely obtain first class legal assistance. Is the drug war unwittingly racist? Would we persist with today's drug war if more establishment white people filled our jails? American citizens no longer have the right to ignore these awkward questions.

Bertram and her group suggest that it's time we take a serious look at decriminalization. They realistically concede that a social price will have to be paid. Alcohol abuse decreased during our nation's prohibition era. The numbers went back up sharply after legalization. Some individuals will inevitably experiment with legally sanctioned drugs. Nonetheless, life is often about trade offs, balancing off the good against the bad. Taking a chance on decriminalization is not a perfect solution, but likely the lesser of evils. I strongly recommend --Drug War Politics.-- You owe it to yourself to read it thoroughly. The price of denial is indeed too high.

An excellent general overview, covering drug use and regulation, pharmacological basics, in-depth analyses of the legal drugs, tranquilizers and stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and marijuana, and comments on "a rational look at drug use." Well-documented with an abundance of relevant quotes and statistics; a rich set of references follow each chapter.

I bought this book to study for a quiz-out test for my Psych major. I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up. I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever! I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text. It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatment--from caffeine to heroin. I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book. It really enforces what you have learned.

This book is the source for unbiased information on the sociological, psychological, pathological effects of "drugs" - this compendium covers everything from caffeine to antipsychotics to alcohol to psychedelics and everything in between. A review of the history of each drug introduces each chapter. Careful attention is paid to not only the effects of the drugs themselves, but the effect which they have on our laws and the way in which treat addiction.

As a former student of Dr. Ray's I can attest to the thoroughness of this work. It is the one book that doesn't tell you what to think about drugs - it provides you with the data to be informed to make your own decision. In fact the DEA uses this book in training! If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for school, your own interest, or just to be informed to talk to your kids, look no further.

I once stated that the further you get away from AA, the worse the 12-steps are in new groups (CoDA, OA, and so on). This book and this organization were created for people with psychiatric illnesses who have chemical or alcohol abuse at the same time. I told my therapist more than once, "Look it. I do NOT want to be in a group with crazy people who have heroin needles hanging from their arms!" He replied mildly, "I don't think that will happen." Just the opposite happened! There WERE schizophrenics and hard drug users (especially cocaine)there. But they were REALLY nice, well-dressed, and honest. Wonderful people. These were DRA people. And this book is our handbook. DRA believes that the BIG BLUE book of AA states that it is alright to take psychiatric medication. I don't know about that. But this book is a gem. It states the entire format of DRA. Maybe I shouldn't say this. But just between you and me, the members of DRA seem to be members of AA as well. I'm doing both. I have been 101 days without alcohol. How did I do it? My psychiatrist looked me straight in the eye and told me that the combination of Valium (I'm a Valium addict) and booze will turn my brain into mush. I REALLY hate him. But he may have helped me more than anyone. He suggested DRA. So did my therapist. But I fell for the cognitive therapy bit so much (SMART, RR. and so many other "test tube" semanticists). My psyciatrist said that I'm an "alche who takes 'goof balls'". And that he would quit on me if I drank again. This book and the Big Blue Book are absoluely essential for people who have psychiatric disorders (I have major depression) and chemical dependency. Don't go the Albert Ellis and Jack Trimpey route. Thinking doesn't cause one to be depressed or to drink. It can be the death of a spose, trouble with one's job, or just a feeling of hopelessness. Follow AA and DRA and get well. Avoid CBT and RET because they sell. Thank you. And thank you Dr. Carraway. You were very tough. But it did work. BUY THIS BOOK!

Wow! This book is fantastic!

I spent years in recovery from substance abuse ignoring or minimizing my mood disorder. And never understood why I was clean, sober and miserable. And unfortunately many of the well-meaning people in A.A. and gave me some incorrect information. "You're having a dry drunk", "Medication is a crutch," "You need to work the steps harder".

Even after I realized that there was another illness that I was powerless over, it took me years to begin to understand how the two illnesses were entwined. This book has proved an essential tool in my recovery. It is laid out much like the Big Book of AA and focusses on recovery through the 12 Steps and Fellowship.

Many of us have even gotten together to form a group of Dual Recovery Anonomous - where we study The Dual Disorders Recovery Book. We're still active in AA but have gotten so much out the extra information and guidance provided by this book.

Hope and identification

To my knowledge Dual Recovery Anonymous as a fellowship does not exist in the UK. So for a person who wants a twelve step approach to dealing with the dual recovery of a psychiatric or emotional illness plus an addiction to drugs or alcohol this book is excellent.

It explains so much which will give you hope and identification. There are several personal stories in it each dealing with a different psychiatric diagnosis. I found mine in there and it was just such a huge relief to read a story so very like my own.

It offers hope for recovery in a very realistic and empathetic way to those afflicted with a dual diagnosis based on the twelve step recovery programme of Dual Recovery Anonymous.

A must for anyone in this position who wants an insight into the twelve step approach to managing both illnesses. There are other books: a step book, a daily readings book and apparently a workbook. I stress though that a book alone cannot replace the expert help of a psychiatrist, doctor, therapist or real fellowship of actual people..all of which are promoted in this book.

While a certain reviewer of this book thinks it is somewhat helpful, he chides readers to stay away from any presentation purporting to say that Cognitive Behavior therapy is the least bit helpful for people with depression or addictions. He states that 'thinking' has nothing to do with depression. He apparently spends all his time reading books to write reviews (222 that I counted)and ignores the scientific literature. This book is based on science and offers a format which is easily understandable. I highly recommend it.

Extensive, but probably your standard graduate level counseling textbook on the complex subject of co-occurring disorders (COD). Clear and to the point, no frills overview of the topic and reference to provide sound care of COD, the text offers a discussion of COD for each of the mental health conditions found in the DSM IV. If mental illness requires involved assessment and treatment and if substance abuse the same, dual diagnosis is all that much more involved. This is your standard text for COD for students and entry-level counselors in the field.

We often read in the news that the local clinic or hospital has just built a brand new facility or they recruited a number of specialists to join their practice - the assumption is that this leads to good care. What Dying for Compassion shows us is one of the critical components of good care is caring and the lack of it leads to its own cadre of nosocomial diseases that technology has no remedy for. It also helped me reflect on what really matters when a friend or family member gets sick; to be there and to support. I have been in health care for 30 years and could identify with a number of incidents in the book. If you are in healthcare, grab a copy, I think you will also find Joshua's journey enlightening.

DYING FOR COMPASSION
BY IRWIN M. RUBIN & T.W.BODEN

A GREAT SUMMER READ! THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL ; SEX, DRUGS, GREED AND INTRIGUE.

THE AUTHOR TELLS HIS STORY THROUGH JOSHUA, PHYSICIAN, CEO OF A FICTIONAL MEDICAL CENTER. A FALLIBLE HUMAN BEING CONFRONTING MULTIPLE SERIOUS PROBLEMS. SOME ARE SELF INFLICTED AND THERE ARE OTHERS WHO PLOT AGAINST HIM. CONSULTANTS PROVIDE SOME VERY INTERESTING SOLUTIONS. A SURPRISING RECOMMENDATION IS A PRESCRIPTION ON HOW TO ADDRESS ADVERSARIAL RELATIONSHIPS

A MEDICAL MYSTERY THAT PROBES THE SORDID DARKER SIDE TRAITS OF GREED, DISHONESTY AND LACK OF COMPASSION. THE CAST OF CHARACTERS INCLUDE SOME DESPICABLE INDIVIDUALS. THEY ARE JUST PLAIN EVIL!

IT IS AN ECLECTIC NOVEL EXPLORING LIFE AND DEATH ISSUES WITNESS JOSHUA'S INTERACTIONS WITH COLLEAGUES, PATIENTS AND FAMILY IN A MEDICAL CENTER WITH AN ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS A HIGH CONCENTRATION OF VICE IE. DRUG DEPENDENCY, KINKY SEX, MANAGERIAL AND MEDICAL MALPRACTICE AND MURDER.

THE ATTITUDES OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN THIS MEDICAL CENTER IS A LACK OF COMPASSION. A BEHAVIOR PREVALENT IN MANY "REAL LIFE" HEALTH CARE PERSONNEL. NO ONE REALLY CARES.

THE BOOK'S BONUS IS IT'S EDUCATIONAL VALUE. AS A FORMER CEO OF A LARGE MEDICAL GROUP I'M AWARE OF THE AUTHOR'S LONG EXPERIENCE AS AN EXPERT MEDICAL CONSULTANT. IT SERVES HIM WELL. HE HAS A KEEN INSIGHT INTO THE INTERNAL WORKINGS OF MEDICAL CENTERS. THE TECHNICAL PARTS OF THE BOOK ARE ACCURATE AND EXPLAINED WITH CLARITY. YOU LEARN WHAT IT IS REALLY LIKE TO BE ON THE " INSIDE." HE LEADS US ON A FACTUAL TOUR INTO THE FIELDS OF PSYCHOLOGY, PATHOLOGY, SURGERY AND ANESTHESIOLOGY. YOU ALSO LEARN ABOUT THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT IN THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE . YOU WILL COME AWAY WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THOSE WHO HAVE OUR CARE IN THEIR HANDS.

THE BOOK FINISHED I LAID IT DOWN. THE MYSTERY HAD BEEN SOLVED. STILL, I PONDER, "WILL THOSE WORKING IN THE HEALTH CARE FIELD EVER PROVIDE THE COMPASSION YOU AND I SEEK IN OUR HEALTH CARE ENCOUNTERS?"

EXCELENT!! - FIVE STARS!! John Tschohl's books have been my secret weapon since his first book years ago.

What I just read in his new e-Service is exactly the missing link for dot coms: how to keep customers coming back again and again.

If you are on a leadership position in any company involved on e-commerce, you MUST buy this book right away. And when you do, you'll agree with me that it's worth the reading time by a factor of a thousand, for e-Service describes exactly what is the secret to making money on the Web (and HOW you can take advantage of it NOW).

This book is about two things: 1) How to make money through a fanatic level of customer service; 2) How to use technology to get closer to the customer (instead of alienating people).

When organizations forget the reason because they exist (to create value for shareholders and customers), then they fail.

As I was reading this book, I could only wonder why so many companies have been so blind: when customers receive great, unbeliebable customer service, they buy more, they come back, and they talk about it.

John Tschohl teaches exactly HOW to build an organization in which everyone is involved in the commitment of making customers feel happy, so they make you more money. A fairly simple concept. But a powerful one.

John Tschohl's book will challenge you to think about your business and what you have not been doing.

It will hit you over the head like a 2 x 4 and bring you to the realization that you literally have 1000's of competitors that may sell the same product,at the same price,or even for less, and the only thing that you have to differentiate is "your exceptional and noteable e-Service".

How's your "e-Service" doing? Is it costing you thousands of dollars of lost sales or is it a primary profit center?

This book will fill your mind with multiple ideas on how to make e-Service a trademark of your company that drives sales.

The book was very easy to read and follow. I enjoyed splitting it up over four days to give myself more time to absorb this powerful message of necessary change.

Retired NYPD Det. Al Sheppard is too humble to say so...but he is a True Hero! E-Man is an excellent book...a riveting account of his years with the prestigious Emergency Services Unit of the NYPD. There is an old saying "When a Civilian needs help, they call the Police. When Cops need help...they call the Emergency Services Unit...ESU!" I've known Al for some 17 years...and although I knew a lot about his 20 years of service with NYPD, even I didn't know most of his (and his fellow officer's) courageous exploits...detailed in this book. This book truly captures the unselfish service of our emergency men and women. They price they pay is to place their job before their family as they risk their lives. I can only imagine climbing to the top of a bridge or talking a suicidal person down from doing something crazy. Dealing with the gruesome medical emergencies that would make your skin crawl. Being the backup for cops confronting the most dangerous of situations. These E MEN should be applauded for the work they do.

In the end, this book makes you realize just the ultimate price they do pay to protect us against harms way. Further it demonstrates the unselfish nature of our service men and women. In a world that seems to focus on the negative, I love this book which focuses on the heroic acts of countless service providers. It was a pure inspiration to me and I would be shocked if they didn't turn this book into a movie or TV series.

During World War II and in the years afterward Stalin and the Soviet Union maintained a very active spy network in both the United States and England. During this time the intellectual liberals in the United States became convinced that the United States Government was on a witch hunt to railroad a series of people into jail.

Perhaps the most famous of these was the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who were convicted of espionage and subsequently executed. There have been a number of books published that claim the Government falsified the evidence against them and that they were innocent. Then in the 1990's, the Venona project was declassified and clearly showed that they were indeed spies. Since then the media has been very quiet on the subject.

This book looks at a number of these early trials, discusses what happened and then relates what more recent sources like Venona and the opening of the KGB archives says about the cases.

In spite of this evidence, there are still those who maintain that these people were innocent, see for instance the book 'Secret Judgment: How the U.S. Government Illegally Executed Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.'

Finally, the truth about Soviet espionage in America

Read this for graduate American history course. John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr have collaborated and written the definitive book on six of America's espionage trials of the early Cold War era. The historical authority that this book enjoys is due not only to the use of trial transcripts and to primary and secondary sources, but its real authority comes from three sources that have been unavailable to scholars in some instances for over forty years. To draw an accurate picture of the magnitude of espionage conducted in the United States at the behest of the Soviet Union, the authors have used FBI files on the subject which were only made available in the 1980's. In addition, in 1995 the U.S. government made public about 3,000 decoded messages that were sent between Soviet consulates in the U.S. and Moscow from 1943 to 1946. These were messages that U.S. code breakers deciphered under a project named "Venona." Finally, the authors were able to corroborate much of their information from Soviet intelligence officers who defected and gave information to intelligence services in the West, as well as KGB archives that were made available after the collapse of the Soviet Union. All of this information was used by the authors to write, in a very entertaining style, an accurate account of six espionage trials and how they affected American politics for decades.

Besides the factual accounts of the six espionage trials and information on the unlawful activity of the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA), in this book the authors illuminated another important lesson, especially for historians. By writing about the conduct, outcome, and historical interpretation of the espionage trials and the "red scare" that swept across the U.S. at the start of the Cold War, the authors astutely showed how historical interpretation of the subject had come full circle in fifty years. Newspaper headlines were replete with reports of Communist spies being ferreted out of government agencies in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Many Americans were riveted by and fearful of two of the more famous cases--the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg atomic spy trial and the Alger Hiss-Whittaker Chambers State Department spy case. Both cases engendered strong reactions from both conservatives who supported the government against the Rosenbergs and supported Chambers against Hiss, and liberals who saw overzealous prosecution by the government especially against Ethel Rosenberg and Hiss. Even after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed and Hiss was found guilty, public opinion seemed to stay the same until after the Watergate era; a time in which many Americans perceived abuses of power by the American government and doubted the veracity of both the FBI and CIA. In the case of Alger Hiss, he was winning the public's opinion by this time mainly because Richard Nixon, who was instrumental in attacking Hiss in congressional hearings, was discredited by his role in the Watergate cover up and his eventual resignation from the presidency. However, the authors showed how inside of fifty years public opinion came full circle back to recognizing that the Rosenbergs and Hiss were truly Communists who spied on behalf of the Soviets, through the release of the "Venona" messages and information from Soviet intelligence archives released in the 1990's.

Another relevant point that the authors made in their book was in reference to the conduct of the CPUSA. Many Americans came to believe that the CPUSA should have been banned in the U.S. after Senator McCarthy spearheaded the congressional hearings against Americans who were sympathetic to Communism. Although Senator McCarthy would ultimately be accused of conducting a witch-hunt, especially against people in the film industry, the authors prove with the "Venona" messages and Soviet archival documentation that the CPUSA was working at the behest of the Soviet government. The authors conclude their book with an admonition about the CPUSA. "In the late 1940's and early 1950's, the internal threat posed by the American Communist Party, both as a subversive political force and an auxiliary to Soviet espionage, loomed large" (239). Thus, if it were not proper under the constitution to ban the CPUSA, at a minimum, it should have been required to register as an agent of a foreign government.

Another prescient point that the authors made, which is relevant to the current war against terrorism today, was the extraordinary burden the government was under to protect its intelligence-gathering sources while prosecuting espionage cases. Although the government had clear evidence from the "Venona" messages, and illegal FBI wiretap operations that hundreds of Americans were engaged in espionage against the U. S., it was not at liberty to bring most of these traitors to trial. The government was unwilling to divulge the "Venona" source in court, which it would have had to do under the laws at that time to bring others to trial. In addition, illegal wiretaps would obviously be inadmissible in court. The government had to be satisfied that they would be able to interview these people, and if they did not cooperate with the government, they would at least lose their security clearances, resulting in the loss of their government jobs. The authors drew another parallel between the early Cold War era and the conduct of the war against terrorism today. The early Cold War spies were motivated by ideology and not money, just like today's terrorists. They were true believers in the Communist ideology, which is a major reason why so many were unwilling to cooperate with the government by turning over the names of other people they knew were spying for the Soviets in the U.S. Their ideological beliefs made them more dangerous because they were willing to have their lives ruined and go to their graves rather than divulge information. Thus, for all of the aforementioned reasons, Haynes and Klehr's book is a valuable keystone to anyone trying to understand the early Cold War era.

As a graduate student in philosophy and history, I recommended this book for anyone interested in American history, foreign policy, Cold War history.

This reference work belongs on your bookshelf. Short and factual while heavily documented, in effect a college-level history primer, it recounts and places in context the major espionage trials of the 1940s and 1950s.

It is now estimated there were several hundred Soviet spies in the United States, pilfering government, industrial or military secrets, and occasionally rising high enough in government to influence policy.

Few were successfully prosecuted because counterespionage needs often worked at cross purposes with criminal trials' public disclosure. Cases often hinged on evidence gained from bugs and wiretaps placed without court order, which the FBI could do, and which served counterspy investigations, but which could not be introduced into court. The relatively few convictions have allowed the left to claim over the years that it was all a drummed-up scare over a non-existent problem. This book conclusively proves otherwise.

The authors put these cases - Elizabeth Bentley, Hiss-Chambers, the Rosenbergs and numerous others - into historical and sequential context, including the shifting politics of wartime and postwar and changing criminal laws in areas like wiretapping. They also apply the conclusive evidence emerging publicly only decades later when records were declassified here and abroad.

The authors' fairness is exemplified by their treatment of Manhattan Project research director J. Robert Oppenheimer. Wiretaps showed he wasn't guilty of spying, but aroused government security suspicions both because of his close Communist associations - including his wife and brother - as well as his reticence to investigators once Soviet spying attempts came to light. His shifting stories over the years (mostly to protect his brother, Manhattan Project leader General Leslie Groves concluded) led many to doubt his judgment and suitability, while not necessarily his loyalty.

They also do a great job reconstituting the "Who Lost China?" debate. American Communists in the Treasury Department planted a Chinese Communist agent in Chiang's government, who managed to delay gold transfers to Chiang's government for two or three years. Chinese currency became worthless and public opinion tilted to Mao.

Haynes and Klehr conclude that the problem ended by the 1960s, for various reasons, with the decline of the ideologically motivated spy. Latter-day traitors like Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanson did it for money. But the earlier period should be one of great concern for those today who maintain that their opposition to U.S. interests and support for those of foreign enemies should in no way generate questions about their loyalty. Because in the 1930s and 1940s, left ranks were pervaded by traitors. Liberals need to get over their continuing denial.
