In a true Arendtian sense, Kimberly Curtis rescues the pearls of Hannah Arendt's political philosophy for the contemporary predicament. The totalitarian model is still lurking around the corner, and while we allow ourselves to become more beauraucratized, more sheltered in the enclaves of our gated communities, blocking out the plight of the workers who labor to make our commodities, becoming ever more apolitical, we are allowing ourselves to slip ever closer to totalitarianism once again. And the insights of Hannah Arendt are perhaps more vital now than ever before. Here, Curtis simply does an excellent job of revitalizing the spirit of Arendt's work... definitely one of the best sources on Arendtian politics I have read.

Richard Hay is a prolific writer, a wonderful wordsmith who effectively blends beliefs and language utilizing haiku form to profess philosophies on life truths. Contents stimulate soul searching and self-assessment. Inspirational in nature, this work will challenge and motivate readers to re-read and ear-mark pages for favorite passages. My copy has many page corners folded after two readings.

I sincerely recommend this book for anyone seeking answers to "Who I Am."

Fascinating and Astonishing

There are many indelible words and images in this groundbreaking book that looks at how American editorial writers have handled the big issues: race, death, freedoms, politics, and more. Consider the angry screed written in 1961 by segregationist Jimmy Ward, editor of the Jackson (MS) Daily News, calling the freedom riders "puppets" and "riot-inciting professionals." It appears next to a close-up photo of a badly beaten freedom rider, his eyes swollen shut. Or the 122-word verdict on the "worthless" life of murderer Leonard Edwards that ran in the Philadelphia Daily News in 1975, ending with the curt demand: "Fry him." Or the lyrical, heartbreaking editorial that William Allen White of The Emporia (KS) Daily Gazette wrote when his 16-year-old daughter was killed in a riding accident.
"Outrage, Passion & Uncommon Sense" is full of excellent writing, evocative photographs, forgotten history, and well-remembered history, recalled in a fresh way with original editorials that ran within hours or days of the event. It's a wonder that no one has attempted such a book before. What a useful book for journalism students or any student of American history!

A helpful primer on addiction and recovery

Addictions to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, gambling and sex destroy millions of lives every year. In clear language, counseling psychologist Michael Hardiman explains the physical and psychological components of addiction and details why some people are particularly vulnerable. He is not concerned with offering broad solutions to this monumental social problem. Instead, he wants to help individual addicts and their loved ones untangle themselves from the web of addiction. If you think you or someone close may be addicted to substances or behaviors, we strongly recommend this primer on the nature of addiction.

The Thinking Person's Guide to feelings
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-18
This is a comprehensive handbook and user guide to human emotions. It has the depth, rigor, and authority of an academic text and the accessibility of a self-help book. It unravels mysteries of human behavior that I wondered about for years.

The book begins with a grand tour of fifteen emotions. Each of these detailed tours begins with a case study followed by a description of the unique dramatic plot, the underlying assessment of personal goals, provocation, personal meaning, and coping strategies for each emotion. The logic underlying each emotion is analyzed. Subtle but useful distinctions are described between related emotions and between emotions and their synonyms. For example, the distinction between envy and jealousy, the difference between anxiety, fright, fear, and horror and the differentiation between embarrassment, shame, shyness, and humiliation is made clear.

A central theory of the book is that emotion and logic ("heart" and "head") cannot be separated. Each emotion begins with our appraisal of how we have been harmed or benefited in a certain way. After this appraisal, we choose a course of action. Knowing the logic of each emotion allows you to decipher peoples' emotional patterns and reconcile them with personal goals.

The book concludes with discussion of several practical implications. These include emotions and their relationship to stress and health as well as descriptions of psychotherapy approaches that can be helpful when coping fails.

I look forward to re-reading and studying this substantial book again and again.

Unless someone has changed the inside of this book, it is the same I had when I was very small, 60 years ago. It may well have been one of the first interactive books for toddlers. It has a mirror to look in, Daddy's scratchy face to feel, the bunny to pat, and I've forgotten what else. I would hate to even guess how many times our copy of that book was read. It lasted through us three girls and I was amazed to find it still mostly intact when I went home to visit, as an adult.

A seminal & scholarly contribution to Psychoanalytic Studies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Patterns: Building Blocks Of Experience By Marilyn Chambers (Adjunct Professor of Clinical Psychology, Michigan State University) traces how primary sensory and affective experiences coalesce into patterns which evolve to reflect a unique subjectivity on the part of every individual personality. These are life patterns through which we interact and affect one another beyond any overt physical connection or activity. Professor Charles draws upon case examples to illustrate and document these patterned experiences comprising life narratives. Of special not is the chapter devoted to "The Language of the Body: Allusions to Self-Experience in Women's Poetry". Patterns is a seminal and scholarly contribution to Psychoanalytic Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
