I really liked this book. Took it on vacation and once I started, I needed to keep going. The action was well paced and had some twists and kept me involved. Story line is well laid out, Altho' I'm not totally sure that the captain could have 2 girlfriends in his crew at the same time. This never worked for me.

Mark Smith Does it Again!

When you pick up this little book, be prepared to keep turning the pages until you're finished. This is the fourth one of Smith's books that I've read cover to cover. I've enjoyed them all [especially STONO], but this one resonates and relates to today's world. The creation of racial stereotypes by white Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries has echoes in the racial profiling of suspected terrorists today. The amount of research that went into this book is incredible, but it is not "weighty" or dull. Smith's writing is engaging and thoughtful. There can be little doubt that this fine young scholar is THE rising star [some would say he's already THE star] of Southern historians.

The illustrations in the book are cute, inspirational, and even a little funny and can even draw in the anti-dieting bunch!
Because I bought this cute little book and read it fast -- and it reinforced every last thing I fashioned my own little diet with. So then I couldn't resist showing the book to everybody!
This book is not exactly for the anti-diet bunch. It very much couches calorie counting under the popular rubric of portion control. When followed less than loosely (and I really mean that), portion control can be as effective as strict calorie control.
I used to count fat grams long before I ever counted calories. Counting calories works better. Of course, I get hungrier. But I am going to the bank with my MUCH better results, particularly as I am a cholesterol patient!
But, above all, Masano states her main points without being preachy! I have had my radar up for preachy since age 7, when a stranger who was a Weight Watchers member approached my mother and me, and even though my mother was quite obese herself, started proselytizing me about "what I was doing to myself." Decades before the so-called childhood obesity crisis.
There are certain things you won't find in this book. The book was a little light on the necessity for regular, sustained, vigorous exercise and it was a little heavy on being able to really go to town as a social eater and pay no hard-to-shake-off consequences--but, hey, that's just me. (Why take it out on this author/illustrator?) I have a metabolism that, from early childhood has always been an endless challenge. Finally succeeding in keeping my weight off ultra long term at age 50, and weighing 86 pounds less than I weighed when I was 24 years old.

Mr. Danna's writing is very clear and to the point. The information and techniques are immediately useful in any area of selling. As a former high school biology teacher, I used his strategies to help "sell" the students on learning. In my organizational/educational consulting business, I find the skills that I learned from Mr. Danna's book to be extremely useful and successful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to successfully sell anything.

I bought this book to use with a summer reading program and has it been a hit! The age groups that enjoyed the activities in this book range in age from 6-15 years old. Each student was able to walk away knowing how to share at least one of the optical illusions to share with their family. We've had a blast using this book and highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys being fascinated.

'I Get Wet' is an inspiring book that triggers scientific curiosity not only in preschoolers but adults as well! I started reading the book to my then 3 year-old in the living room and next thing I know, the entire family moved to the kitchen to perform the series of experiments suggested in the book. The experiments show simple concepts on water properties that are easily understood by kids even at an early age.

I came across this book in the bookstore accidentally and believe me, I was awe struck at the way the author has explained the science concepts so beautifully and wonderfully that even the very young can appreciate . My son is 28 months old and 'am on my way to get a copy of this book .I'm sure he'd love all those activities in the book and this is a fun way to introduce even the youngest children to science concepts.
I'm sure I'm gonna end up buying lots of books by this author.
HURRAY TO THE AUTHOR AND THE ILLUSTRATOR.
