This book was recommended to me by our School Counsellor and after reading it, I can understand why. I found this book to cover the situations that my teens and I have been going through. I have applied Carolyn's knowledge on several different occasions and have found a greater peace has taken place within my home! Carolyn has shown me the way to brighter days with my teens. I know that there will still be some bumps in the road, but having this book at my side gives me great comfort. If you have children, you need this book, I highly recommend it.

Excellent, enjoyable, and easy to read!

This fantastic book provides a fresh and realistic approach to parenting teens in today's world. The practical (and often humorous) ideas and advice empower parents with awareness, information, and skills to respectfully teach/guide their children to make responsible decisions for themselves. ARE YOU LOSING CONTROL? is a must read survival guide for parents as their children make the journey through pre-adolescents/adolescence to adult independence.

Practical and powerful!

This book offers the freshest, most sensible approach to parenting teens that I've ever read. In fact, I'd recommend it to anyone who deals with teens, not just parents. It looks at every topic in a radically new way, from "rewards and punishment" to "dealing with confict" to "peer pressure", "sex" and, perhaps the greatest fear for most of us, "alcohol and drugs." Best of all, it looks at teens in a whole new light: as persons-in-development who deserve our respect and support, and shows us how to provide it. An excellent book that will really make a difference in the way you relate to your teen!

We've had it about a month now. She loved it from the beginning b/c she just loves dogs. She just now is reaching for the "touch" spots. It is a nice and big sized book so it's very enjoyable for babies to see the animals. A must for any baby who is interested in dogs.

This is a wonderful book for babies and toddlers. I bought this book for my daughter when she was 6 months old. We now keep the book in the car and the first thing she usually says after she is in her car seat is "Puppy book, Mommy."

The book contains pictures of real puppies and each puppy has an object the reader can touch and feel: puppy fur, a basket, a dog's "tongue," and bows.

As with all Roger Priddy books, this too is a wonderful book.

I bought this book for my daughter when she was about 6 months old. She likes books a lot, but she absolutley loved this book. She wouldn't put it down. She will look at other books for a little bit, smile, and then go on to something else. This book still gets smiles and laughter day after day over a month later. If she see this book laying around she will stop everything and go after it. I really like the big simple pictures in the book. It is eye catching for a baby without being overstimulating. The cute rhymes are also great for language development. My daughter and I both prefer the Roger Priddy books over others. We have since bought Frosty Friends, and Zoo's Who, which are both a hit. I plan to buy the 4th book, Quack, Quack for her also. All the Roger Priddy books are great and have been a hit in our house.

Big Smelly Fun!

Review Date: 2008-03-26
This is a very cute story about the virtues of bathing, as seen through the eyes of a bear who has a distinct lack of personal hygiene skills.

Just looking at the cover, the comparisons with Eric Carle's style will be inevitable (something that the publishers seem to have intended, considering the layout).

The story is simple, but clever. Big Smelly Bear never bathes. The only creatures who want to come near him are flies. The other forest animals all ran to get away from his stink.

But when Big Smelly Bear needs a friend to scratch an itch that he can't reach, he might finally have to take that dreaded bath. He may even find that his friendship with Big Fluffy Bear is worth the trouble of an occasional dunking in the river.

Kids will giggle over the title and the main character, and the book gives some good positive reinforcement about baths, as well as some lessons in friendship. The illustrations are colorful and fun, and the book is a good length for a quick bedtime story with big legible print for youngsters to follow along.

Kids love this book!

Good Book That Teaches Kids the Societal Benefits of Good Hygiene
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-28
This is an excellent book which teaches children that others in society will act and think of them differently if they don't clean themselves up, wash their clothes and the like. Illustrates to children the benefits and interaction from their friends (and even the opposite gender but this will be over the head of younger readers) won't happen with poor hygiene as they'll want to keep their distance or avoid you is brilliantly portrayed through the two main characters (bears).

Illustrations are more in the style of softer cartoon looking animals than more realistic looking style illustrations other illustrators of animals use, but I think it suits the story well. The basic plot is a bear doesn't really care that it smells and is known as Big Smelly Bear by the other animals. It refuses to bathe in the river and as its smell gets worse and worse its skin becomes itchy. It tries everything to get rid of the itch such as rubbing against a tree and using a stick to reach its back.

One day it notices a female bear in a tree. She tells him she is known as Fluffy Bear and he asks her to come down and scratch his itchy back. She tells him she will if he has a bath first which he refuses to even think about. Of course his desire for Fluffy Bear to scratch his back is starting to outweigh his desire to follow his non bathing stance!

A good book with a very simple storyline and a bit of repetition between the two main characters which kids of course love but those who are really adults and don't understand that kids read and take in messages from books differently may well find simply annoying. Big Smelly Bear is of course a kids' picture book so if you're just an adult who likes to read books with pictures you may want to choose something a bit more mentally challenging.

I attended a lecture by Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe and I was compelled to get this book to have more detailed information about why I just don't seem to loose weight no mater what diet I am on. I started reading the book and it was one a-ha after another. There are so many eye opening facts and wonderful suggestions. I started doing them and my body is responding very well. I am so pleased that I went back and ordered 3 more for family and friends.

A BRAVE SPACEBOY is a wonderful rhyming tale about a little boy who transforms his moving day into a great adventure. In a new house filled with boxes which need unpacking, he and a couple of his new neighbors decide to pretend they are going into outer space. With colanders and bowls for helmets and an empty box as a spaceship, the three children launch their great voyage into space. On the trip, they use other household items to leave footprints in space, collect artifacts, plant flags and take souvenir photos. Upon his return home, the brave spaceboy realizes that in addition to having fun, he has also made two new friends.

Dana Smith's playful, rhyming words paired with Laura Freeman's detailed and engaging illustrations make this book a real treat to read. A BRAVE SPACEBOY shows just how much fun children can have with ordinary kitchen items, a few empty boxes, and a little creativity. In this age of cable and satellite television, DVD's, video game consoles and the like, children rely on their imaginations less and less. This book re-affirms the simple things in life and will remind parents and teach children just how much fun a little innovation and imagination can be.

Smith and Freeman's tale of a valiant spaceboy is witty and adequate for all ages. With just a glance at the text, one would assume that this youthful boy is roaming through space. Yet there is a deeper implication as. Moving day turns in to a magnificent voyage to Mars in a spaceship, in the full space attire, but his ship is a cardboard box and his helmet a metal strainer. When they arrive on Mars they discover an Alien on the red planet, a little girl in green on a red sofa. The pictures are so vibrant giving the readers a warm feeling. This extraordinary tale of make-believe is perfect for any child and for the child in all of the grown-ups too.

Dee's book is wonderfully written. It is hard to put it down. The book is filled with helpful instruction to new preachers. I use it almost every time I prepare a lesson. He gives basic outlines for different types of sermons. I have found these outlines very beneficial when observing my own outlines. It also gives young men, like my self, a little more confidence in our ability, since the book offers ways to find your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to continually improve both areas. Dee's book would benefit all readers, since in some aspect of our lives all christians need to be spreading the message of Christ.

Brother Bowman has an accurate understanding of what preaching is and offers a well-balanced, well-rounded approach. The guidelines he presents wisely avoid forcing all preachers into a single mold and instead will help any preacher--young or old, new or experienced--be the best preacher he can be. We have long needed a book like this.

Brother Bowman is uniquely qualified to write a book on the art of preaching. He has been for a number of yearas one of the most effective preachers among our brethren (churches of Christ), traveling throughout the U.S. and always in great demand for meetings and lectures. He has also, for the past 14 years, been conducting a special class on the art of preaching each spring at Florida College (Temple Terrace, Florida). This book is a compilation of the material he has used in that class, along with a special "preacher training program" that he has conducted for a number of years in Pasadena, Texas.

I just finished reading the book myself, and I highly recommend it to all preachers, young and old, who are interested in improving their sermon preperation and presentation skills. Chapter titles include:

1. In The Beginning 2. Who Is Qualified To Preach? 3. Types of Sermons 4. Preparing the Sermon 5. Style and Personality 6. The Preacher and His Audience 7. Rhetoric: The Power of Persuasive Speaking 8. Preaching In This Age

Here is a quotation from the "Foreward" written by another man I consider to be a great preacher, Melvin Curry:

"Now, thanks to Dee Bowman's book ... preachers young and old are blessed with a practical handbook that guides us through the thrilling process of sermon preparation and delivery. It is a book that teaches us how to balance form and substance."

I was 22 years old,a brand new college graduate, and an Army Officer when one of my mentors provided me his copy. I ordered my own from there. I have read it numerous times and saved money as suggested and now my net worth makes me smile every time I look at statements. I married 11 years ago and forced my wife to follow along and now she is believer. This book changed my life. I wish my parents had known to give me the information. I cringe when I think about all the money I wasted in high school / college. If you can get this book buy it! It will change your life.

I've already begun to take these easy steps and many of my goals will be achieved within the next six months. This book can be read in under 90 minutes; the graphs are very helpful as well.

When I bought this book at first I had my doubts, this book ranges from making decisions from choosing what socks to wear all the way through to deciding what coffin to bury your loved one in. Only just last week I was in the supermaket and I could not decide if I should buy apples or pears but thanks to Edwin M. Glasscock's 'the #1 Critical Success Factor'I could think back to the chapter on fruit and chose the pears and I feel all the better for it, I purchased the juiciest pears I could find, boy! they were delicious! When the bills come in at the end of the month I simply pick up Edwin M. Glasscock's 'the #1 Critical Success Factor' and read the chapter on money management! I've had my phone line cut three times now! but that doesn't matter since no one ever calls me! fantastic!
My mother once said to me 'If you don't have any common sense then don't say something at all' thanks to Edwin M. Glasscock's 'the #1 Critical Success Factor' I know that she was right, everything in this book makes sense...common sense. Not only is informative but it is also essential bed time reading, the capter on how to get a decent fourty winks is fantastic, I won't reveal anything about it you have to buy this wonderful book to discover this secret.
I have told my friends and family about 'Common Sense : the #1 Critical Success Factor' by Edwin M. Glasscock and they swear at it, after reading this book one of my friends decided to sell his house and live in a mobile home with six dogs, he he loves his new lifestyle as a travelling person and refuses to look back at the way he once lived.
If you have problems with common sense then buy this book, after reading it the the number one factor in your life will be 'Critical Success'.

I award this book 5 stars and a W.G. sinclair double thumbs up!

This book puts a whole new spin on the Martian problem. What do we really know about the planets in our solar system other than what we can be seen on the surface? What vital pieces of information are we missing about our own planet Earth? Commonality makes you think about these things, while giving you page turning entertainment. R. T. Hitchcock shines a whole new light on an old science fiction theme. This book is also a metaphor about the more earthly theme of racial similarties as opposed to racial differances. This a multi-layered book that is well worth reading.

Kurt Johnston's book should be read by anyone who is in Youth Ministry, be they volunteer, parent or Pastor. He offers insights into all aspects of Junior High Ministry, including suggestions on recruiting volunteers and making them feel they are a viable part of the effort. He offers suggestion after suggestion on everything from games, to messages, to small groups, to special events. The section on creativity will help you think of being creative in a whole new light.
There are sound suggestions on how to build trust and relationships with students who are facing an awkward phase of life, realizing that not every student responds the same.
Most importantly this book will help you to show students that not only do you care about them, but Christ cares for them more than they know.
Give this book to your church's Youth Pastor, you will be glad you did.
