Dr. Greg Sipes' book is a rare gem. He manages to combine insights from his considerable clinical practice with practical tips that will help individuals from all walks of life. Greg Sipes is the Bob Dylan of this genre, telling simple truths in ways folks have never considered, but that will impact them at key moments in their lives. The world would be a much better place if everyone would incorporate Dr. Sipes' Six Principles into their daily living.

This captivating book explains how the six priniciples of uncommon sense will improve the reader's quality of life and relationships, therefore enhancing one's leadership capabilities. Dr. Sipes inspires the reader to reflect on how he or she leads his or her life. Lead As You Live, is unlike any other leadership book and should be read by everyone, not just business professionals seeking to refine their leadership skills. Trust me, once you start reading this book you will not want to put it down. This is a truly amazing book and should be part of the course work for college students!

This is a wonderful book. In Lead as you Live, Live as you Lead, Dr. Sipes unleashes a profound concept: we are all leaders by virute of the fact that we are living a life. From this premise, the author unravels several principles of "uncommon sense" that anyone can benefit from--whether one is in an official leadership position or not. In contrast to the multitudes of leadership books advocating rigourous, step-by-step processes to becoming a better leader, Dr. Sipes simply asks his readers to comtemplate his propositions. In doing so, the reader discovers the truth of these various principles and learns to utilize them to achieve greater success as a leader, and, more importantly, as a person. An amazing book.

I've always heard the phrase "if common sense was so common..." - this book finally explains that common sense is NOT the answer - not even close to being the answer. As stated in the book, "Life doesn't obey the rules of common sense. That's why relying on common sense throughout our lives usually leads us to a place where everything is the same as it ever was, but nothing seems right." You have to read this book! With Dr. Sipes incredible wisdom, so much more will start to make sense. There's so much "good stuff" in this book. The best thing you can do for yourself is to read this book. Study it. Put the principles to practice and then "just be." You will not regret it.

This book is perfect for my 17 month old girl. We read it everyday near bedtime. She recognizes the bedtime routine, and I think it helps to make bedtime a sweet experience for her. The book ends with little rabbit falling asleep, so I lower my voice on the last page and tell her "sh." Last night she insisted I read the book three times in a row. I am buying more copies for my cousins and their new babies.

My daughter adores this book (18 mo. old). We got it when she was a few months old, and the pages are still holding up fairly well (only minor taping needed). The verse is soothing, and the characters bright and engaging. She loves feeling the different textures. Highly recommend for your young one, or as a gift.

I know the author Kevin W. McPeek, Sr. personally and have to say that he is an inspiration to everyone who knows him. This book is a reflection of the author's multi-faceted persona: physical, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional. I admire the author's ability to put into his life into words, and to make it real for each reader. In this way, each of us can read for ourselves and find the way onto our own unique, individual path in life. We must show love to others and to ourselves. True love knows no boundaries and is infinite. Kevin W. McPeek's book spells this out in a clear and inspiring fashion that anyone can understand. It is a book worth reading and keeping in one's own library of the mind. I am looking forward to seeing what other works that Kevin W. McPeek will write in the future, as his life is moving in exciting directions. His potential for growth is infinite as is his love for life.

First off; I wanted to say I'm a collector of books; all subjects and
authors get my interests. Second; I wanted to check out this book because a
person I love dearly, her father is the author.
Well, I received the book on a Wednesday at around 4 pm. I finished this
book by the 11 o'clock news. For once I started reading the words glued me
till I finished.
The author bares his soul, in his words, telling about life choices and
trials along the way. He explains that the path we set our lives on, most of
the time ends up the long way around. He covers how to believe in the energy
and spirit with in us, for they won't guide you wrong. Make your life a
treasure that it is suppose to be.
I rated this book four stars and I hope there is a second book. Definitely
a bonus for my collection.

I thought this book was well written and easy for me to read. I have a learning disability and most books I read send me running for a dictionary. This wonderful book didn't. I am a mother of three boys and they are always challenging me or so I thought. I learned a new way of parenting and found out some things are out of my hands. I know this book is supposed to be about Kevin W Mcpeek Sr's life and Living in the Five-Sense World, but it also covers a better way to approach life! Once we understand some of what I think he is trying to show us in this book, we will learn there is a better way to go through life. By reading this book I have learned to approach work, parenting, relationships, interaction with every person I meet with a sense of calm. I was a very stressed out person with high blood pressure and now I try not to worry and just know everything will be all right. I hope who ever reads this book gets as much or even more out of it as I did.

Thanks for reading this review and enjoy the book,

I finished the book, and loved it so much I made the mistake of loaning it to my mother. Then I realized I already had the urge to re-read it in order to fully benefit from its entertaining dialogue and insightful lessons.

"Five Sense World" is a masterfully written blend of the spiritual and real 'work day" issues we all face. The author tells the tale of his life experiences in the chaotic and competetive world of restuarant management. These stories, the ups and downs, successes and failures, by themselves are fascinating, but are really a vehicle for even greater entertainment and enlightenment on another spiritual level. These tales are similar to the kinds of challenges we all face in life. The question is how we face them and how we learn to live successfully in this world. Whatever your occupation, you should read this book for both a good experience in the reading, plus a life changing challenges we all face.

Mom, I want my copy back.

Here is a "no holds barred" approach to describing "real life" shortcomings in handling public finances, and then providing tips to local government policy makers and managers on how to avoid a similiar circumstance.

Len Wood writes from first hand knowledge and experience. He describes the situation; outlines the facts; details the results; and provides the reader with suggestions to lessen financial risk and/or failure in the expenditure of public funds.

While the author's primary target is the newly elected official, the importance of this work to experienced elected and appointed public officals cannot be overstated. No one who has worked in the public sector can peruse this book without saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

An excellent budget, financial and treasury primer.

As an elected Treasurer and local government finance director for the past several years, I found this book to be an excellent primer for all elected and appointed officials. The practical advice offered by Mr. Wood is based on his experience and input from his peers and is extremely valuable. The book is written in a very informal and concise way and should be required reading for all elected officials. In fact, I gave this book to each City Council member and they have all indicated that this book provided excellent financial advice.

"Loki" Is a Norwegan Lundehund
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-20
The book was wonderful, but if you have asked yourself, "what kind of dog" is Loki, then I have the answer. Loki is a Norwegian Lundehund.

The Lundehund, which takes its name from the lunde, puffin, (Fratercula arctica) is one of the world's rarest breed of dog not only because of its modest numbers, but also because in one and the same breed we find a whole series of unusual anatomical characteristics. Some of these characteristics are found, but only sporadically, in other breeds. The lundehund is rare but is also remarkable--what other breed of dog is marked by so many unusual characteristics? The lundehund has at least 6 toes on each foot; can close its ears so that the ear-canal is protected against dirt and moisture; has neck-joints which enable it to bend the head backwards over the shoulders, so that the forehead touches the back--this is useful when the dog has to turn in a narrow passage. Furthermore, this dog has extremely mobile fore shoulder-joints, so that both front legs can stretch straight out to the sides. The lundehunds' unusual characteristics were very useful in a particular kind of hunt. The many toes gave the dog a good foothold when it had to balance on steep cliffs or slippery rocks, and they were a great help when the dog had to crawl through difficult passageways. The dog used this extra toe as support, also to brake himself on slippery or uneven terrain, so that on the whole the dog was equipped to go where the man could not. The characteristic fore shoulder-joints enabled the dog to "throw out his arms" if he lost his footing on slippery rock and was, as we have noted, useful when he had to turn or shift in cramped passages. The mobility of the dog's neck was undoubtedly of great usefulness when he had to reverse himself in order to come out from the passages to the birds' nests. It is indeed unbelievable what nature has created here: the Lundehund is so unusually distinguished by his characteristics as to make one ask if, all in all, this IS a dog.

when they read this book. It's very cute, and Loki's lines seem quite believeable. I think it's a great introduction to life from the perspective of a dog. Both my kids are a bit fearful of dogs, but this helps them seem less threatening.

I have to agree with one of the other comments -- I wish the author had used some word other than "stupid" -- I also substitute "silly." Otherwise, it's a very funny book.

My 28 month old thinks this is the funniest book. We checked it out of the library and I will have to buy it since it is now her favorite book. She loves the way half of the story is from Loki's perspective. She has taken to saying things like "old buddy, old pal." The only thing I dislike is the choice of the word "stupid" as Loki refers to a ball (I say silly when I read it to her,) I don't want her to think that is a word we use. And the same goes for the word "fat" Loki says the last one up the stairs is a "big fat fur ball." Maybe I am too PC consciuos but theses 2 words slightly spoil an otherwise great book.

Rothbard Makes Sense
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-02
From 1982 to his death in 1995, Murray Rothbard wrote a monthly column for the Ludwig von Mises Institute's newsletter, The Free Market. In these columns - which are collected here - Rothbard commented on the economic affairs and policies of the day. While these pieces generally use certain current events as the starting point, Rothbard used these events as a springboard to discuss Austrian economics. Taken as a whole, they provide an excellent introduction to economics from the Austrian school.

This book also contains a few unpublished pieces. The best is Rothbard's analysis of the 1994 elections. As usual, Rothbard gets to the crux of the issues involved, dealing with the characters whose actions (often behind the scenes) were decisive. Reading this piece reminded me of how much we lost in Murray's death - not just a brilliant theoretician, but a man whose comments on the events of the day were a constant source of illumination. Make sure you also get THE IRREPRESABLE ROTHBARD, his collection of essays from the Rothbard-Rockwell report.

Short articles to explain economic situations

This is a great book to fill the void if you are lacking in free market economics. Murray Rothbard, a profound Austrian Economist, wrote most of these articles in the Free Market I believe. Each article deals with certain issues and policies. He uses rational thought and logic to come to a free market solution. This book can be read within a matter of days, depending on how fast you want to read it. And you don't need to have a degree in economics to be able to understand the literature. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to gain insight into economics, especially free market economics.

Rothbard's legacy: a fine posthumous collection
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-28
Murray Newton Rothbard tragically ceased to be "the State's greatest _living_ enemy" when he died in 1995. But his thought lives on in this posthumous collection, mostly drawn from his monthly essays for _The Free Market_ between 1982 and 1995.

These essays cover a wide range of topics, from the welfare state to Clintonomics to fiat money to U.S. intervention in the Middle East -- and Rothbard is uniformly sharp, clear, incisive, and witty wherever he turns his pen.

This collection should also be of interest to those of Rothbard's readers who have heard that he somehow changed his views near the end of his life; the fact is that Rothbard was as strongly laissez-faire and libertarian in his later years as he had ever been.

Some of his readers had simply failed to recognize that the earlier Rothbard was not at all "libertine" but socially quite conservative; they were therefore surprised that he found anything good to say about Pat Buchanan (as he does here, several times) or against allowing illegal aliens to have access to the vast machinery of the welfare state (as in a passage regarding California's Prop. 187 in the book's final essay, a previously unpublished commentary on the November 1994 elections).

As the essays in this volume make clear, it was those readers, not Rothbard, who were guilty of inconsistency. Rothbard was uncompromisingly and consistently devoted to liberty throughout his entire career; he simply did not, as some of his readers have done, confuse antifederalism with moral nihilism.

Also, the penultimate essay provides an overview of the history of the Ludwig von Mises Institute (Auburn, AL), of which Rothbard was Academic Vice President until his death. By the time readers reach this essay, they will be unsurprised that, when Austrian economics sprang again to life in the 1980s and 1990s, it was wearing a rumpled jacket and a bow tie.

A great collection Rothbard's shorter essays

I liked this book because it tries to fill in the gap in the free-market literature of today. I find too many free-market many books on general topics like taxes, education, antitrust, money, and economics in general. However, I like to see real-world opinions of a noted libertarian on topics of the day. This collection is just that. Here, I can see how Rothbard applied his fundamental beliefs and knowledge to the contemporary news stories. The essays range from 1982 to 1995. I can compare his views with views of other commentators, both leftists and conservatives. It's too sad he did not live through all the Clinton years, I'm sure he'd have had much to say. I learned much from these short essays because they _are_ short and to the point.

I am a behavior psychologist who does early intensive behavioral intervention (IEBI) with children who have autism spectrum disorders (ASD's) and I have found Dr. Thompson's book to be an invaluable resource. I regularly recommend this book to both professionals and families who care for children with ASD's.

This book is especially helpful for families who have recently received an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and are overwhelmed with absorbing the diagnosis, grieving the loss of their dreams for their child, and facing the pressure of deciding on treatment options. Dr. Thompson thoroughly explores IEBI and describes what family members can and cannot expect from the process. Additionally, he provides a frank discussion of family dynamics that facilitate or impede early intervention as well as problem behaviors that are commonly misinterpreted by family members. Dr. Thompson has the unique ability to present complex research findings in a manner that is clear, concise, and relevant. For example, his discussion of brain dysfunction in autism (Chapter 3) fosters an appreciation of the importance of early intervention and its possible effects on the brain. However; my favorite thing about this book is the table in Chapter 3 that summarizes autism interventions, the evidence for their effectiveness, and their possible effects on the core symptoms of autism. This table along with the final chapter (Cautionary Considerations for Parents and Practitioners) is worth the price of the book alone and I use them together often!

Finally, many of the families to whom I have recommended this book have commented on the depth, empathy, and respect evident in Dr. Thompson's writing. Dr. Thompson displays a deep understanding and appreciation of the emotional issues that arise during the diagnostic process and in choosing among the many treatment options available; and he does this while never losing sight of the facts. This is a very difficult thing for professionals to do when they are focused on their desire to build on a child's strengths in order to maximize his or her potential and to make every minute of skill training count. Dr. Thompson's book is a reminder that although researchers are making great strides in informing us about the causes and treatment of autism, we must never lose sight of the uniqueness of each person with an ASD and each family member supporting and encouraging that person's growth.

Dr. Thompson is a true expert on autism and has put together a book to help people gain a better understanding of the disorder. It is a valuable resource for parents, and for teachers and clinicians who have the responsibility of helping families come to grips with a new diagnosis. I routinely recommend this to families and to professionals who are new to the autism field. Dr. Thompson takes knowledge gained from research, and combines it with his experience as a family member and a clinician to create a readable and useful resource.

For anybody on the spectrum and/or has a child who is on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum, be sure to make this book a very close friend. This is a valuable resource tool.

Dr. Thompson writes in a clear, logical style and his frank approach will be welcomed by all. He discusses the diagnosis; the neuro-biological condition that autism is; drug treatment; early intervention; school and other related developmental conditions. Professionals also will want to make a place on their book shelves for this gem.

Dr. Thompson, himself the grandfather of a child with autism appears to have an excellent understanding of what this condition entails. He is able to see autism from an insider's perspective and I think he is sincere about wanting to help each person on the spectrum live a life of quality and dignity. Dr. Thompson and Dr. Attwood are the top contenders in a/A literature from the professional's point of view. Be sure to read this along with The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Dr. Attwood.

This is a terrific book! I only wish I would have had the opportunity to read such an insightful, candid and thorough book when our son was diagnosed with autism three years ago. Dr. Thompson has written an easy-to-understand book that flows well and includes sections important to anyone with autism in their life. He explores diagnosis, families, early-intervention, school, pharmacology (this section is facinating!) co-existing and related conditions, etc. From a parent perspective, I like that he shared that his grandson has autism. I believe that he really "gets" what this is like from the inside out, and wants to help kids live the best life possible. I learned a lot, this is very current information, and Dr. Thompson presents it candidly yet thoughtfully. I read a lot of books about autism, and would certainly recommend this as a very worthwhile addition to your "autism collection".

I was hoping for more humor, but I guess there really isn't much in the process to laugh about. I am glad I waited until after having the procedure to read this book. My recovery has been much better than the author's, and the book may have been "too real" before the operation. However, I definitely was able to relate to his war stories after the fact and highly recommend reading this book durine recovery.

Take down the wallful of industry awards, put away the Clios, move over Beethoven, this is Bert Gottlieb's finest hour. Not that Beethoven would notice, nor Dicken's or Faulkner for that matter. This is not just a book. Not just a string of incisive words, carefully and beautifully crafted; it's more the struggle of a man who was suddenly scared witless, and emerges, witfully, I must add, scaring the boogey man.

This is a must read for anyone over 50. Not a manual about the aspects of Prostate Cancer, although it is that, rather a chronicle of the all too human being we all carry around in us and forget.

I read it in two sittings and I was moved. There were laughs, there were tears. I learned a lot. I hope I never have to use what I learned. If I do, I hope I can face it a bravely as Bert Gottlieb did.

Well done!

Common sense is something that people harvest from experience - it can't be taught in a classroom. "The Obviousness Of It All: A Guide to Common Sense" hopes to impart those experiences as best it can to its readers, to help them refine and improve their common sense so they are more alert and can be better equipped to handle decisions when they come up in life. "The Obviousness Of It All: A Guide to Common Sense" is a deftly written guide, highly recommended to anyone who has been accused of lacking common sense and taken it personally - and for community library self-help collections.

This is the wake-up call we all occasionally need - a reminder of what is important in life and that using basic common sense is the answer to all the complications we create for ourselves. The recipes are delicious. The tone of the book is fun, the writing is witty. We're never to old to learn some of the basics that should have been taught to us when growing up. It's a must read for anyone looking to enjoy more of their life, day in and day out.

I wrote the book.

I wrote this book because it begged to be written. On a daily basis I notice the inane things people do, who, with a little common sense, could avoid much of the "stuff" they bring upon themselves. I cover all sorts of aspects in life, and I urge you to read how you can help yourself think before you sink. I absolutely love this book and have given it to half a dozen families.

Each page has a textured "furry" animal that kids will love to pat. The text of the story explains that animals should be treated gently, and that they love to be softly patted.

This is such a great story!!!! Kids love it, and it's a great way to start early teaching the right way to treat family pets. A +++++++++++++++++++++++ !!!! Every family with babies or toddlers should have this book.

I think this book is great. It shows how young children should interact with animals so that they will enjoy them the rest of their lifes. The idea of having the reader pet them gently in the various pages of the book is very creative.
