Becoming Native to AmericaReview Date: 2003-09-11
Winona La Duke's ALL OUR RELATIONS Must ReadReview Date: 2005-01-18
Because I've known many of the people involved in the essential work LaDuke describes in ALL OUR RELATIONS, it was a personal pleasure to read this book and catch up with what Susannah Santos and her cousins are doing on the Columbia River, be updated on Luana Busby and Melani Trask and the Hawaiian indigenous movement and to get the inside details of the complex political fight Winona's son's father and his people are up aqainst at St. James Bay. But this book will fascinate anyone who cares about our earth, families and communities. It is one to read from end to end, then keep around to re-read again and again.
LaDuke calls the work these tribal communities do to protect their people and landbase from pollution and corporate greed, "soul-retrieval." It is work that we all need to do whatever our ethnic background, since as LaDuke's reportage on the presence of PCBs in mother's breastmilk in the Northeast attests, everyone is affected by what we are doing to the earth. Winona is a mother who has no illusions about how the choices we make as consumers affect the earth and our communities' health. What is most inpiring about LaDuke's writing and life is that she offers solutions. Each chapter not only outlines the problem, but it talks about solutions that are being implemented and suggests others that should be employed. Winona walks her talk. LaDuke has been a strong proponent of wind energy and has worked to engage major corporations like Ben & Jerry in developing wind energy projects on Indian Reservations in South Dakota. Native Harvest and White Earth Land Recovery Project have reclaimed White Earth land and developed sustainable reservation businesses that employ and train White Earth tribal members. Winona LaDuke would be a great President because she is the only public figure who has a sensible plan for economic self-sufficiency, the clarity to explain it to the American people, and the discipline and steadfastness to enact it.
The ring of truth is heard loud and clear....Review Date: 2004-10-27
One of the most important quotes from this book that I remember (since I read this book a couple of years ago in a Native/African-American Women's Studies course) was from a Seminole leader who said, "Selling your land for a price is like selling a piece of your mother." [I paraphrase this.] I couldn't agree more. When I remember that quote, I think about all of the animals, vegetation and tribes (consisting of families and friends) who have lived off of the land of the United States, as well as Canada. How can one possibly put a price on something that can't truly be owned by anyone and is its own autonomous entity. Even if people have the illusion that they can occupy land as territory (because of treaties, as an example) does not mean that it is ever their to keep. LaDuke makes several strong examples of this in the book. We can't continue to pollute, abuse and neglect land without paying a price environmentally or in terms of human quality of life and mortaiity. I believe everyone should read this book, regardless of occupation, national origin or territorial location. We need to face the damage done before more of it goes unacknowledged. Thank you, Winonah.

A Boy's Life of HopeReview Date: 2007-01-04
This book is a life of experience through a boy sold into slavery. Experience the Middle Passage, know what it is like, learn how slaves are sold, how cruel owners treat these what-they-once-called "animals." Walk with him. Run with him. And learn how a great writer put the events into words.
This novel is a phenomena, fulfilled with suspense...Review Date: 2007-01-01
He penetrated a new world which he recognized it wasn't his home and all of a sudden he realized that his future was absolutely shattered. He was betrayed by his slave Oppong, who he thought highly of and unfortunately he killed his father the great chief and also his brother. He was taken away from his family; yet, his family had no prior knowledge of where he was. As a result, he was abducted by a slave trader; therefore, Kofi tries to come up with a strategic plan for escape. Later, he is shifted to the Americas to a farmer and learns English. In short, all he has to survive is his flute and his English speaking skill. The diverse settings of this book are the ones that give the reader momentum into continuing reading it. For the fact that is fulfilled of so many turning points that leaves you wanting to read more...

Worth reading for every church leader...Review Date: 2006-01-31
In any case, perfect model or not, Lewis presents many extremely dynamic examples of how his church (and, more specifically, the people within his church) began to impact the Little Rock community in amazing ways. It's great to read those stories of connection, blessing, and service, particularly as so many churches are becoming painfully aware of how useless they really are to their communities.
I would strongly recommend this book to any modern church leader, not because I think that every church should adopt this exact model of church structure, but because it presents some big issues and paradigm-shifting ideas that have the potential to totally redefine the impact of the American church. It just might totally rearrange the way you think about church!!

Redman Scores With Data DrivenReview Date: 2008-10-12
Tying Data to ValueReview Date: 2008-10-01
While we the believers (those of us already convinced) will benefit from Tom's concrete examples and concise arguments - those who will profit most from this book are those who don't know that they need to read it. If they do, they will rapidly make progress toward their goals. As a fellow member of the 20+ years of data-consulting-club, I am please to now have a book that I can hand to current and potential Data Blueprint (http://datablueprint.com) customers and say, "Read this and then we'll discuss your situation."
Great bookReview Date: 2008-09-29
Highly Recommend this BookReview Date: 2008-09-27
Redman has an incredible knack of taking complex and tough problems and cutting through the chase to make the solutions deceptively obvious. His book is full of insights from his many years of experience. He is a story teller in the best sense of the word bringing real world examples into a broad conceptual framework. His passion and understanding of the importance of data quality is contagious. More importantly, he lays out in clear and concise terms how to address data quality issues in a way that results in making a company's information truly its most valuable asset. He understands that achieving this requires not just an understanding of technology and data but also an understanding of people, organizations, and processes.
Finally. The definitive book on achieving data qualityReview Date: 2008-09-26
Dr. Redman's writing is both accessible and enjoyable. He describes the full array of reasons why the kind of data quality program he proposes "can't be done", including politics, technology, and general attitudes throughout the organization. Then he shows how it can, in fact, be done after all.
He begins by describing the costs of poor data quality and then makes the case why these costs should--and can--be reduced or eliminated. He then describes the importance of making data accurate and appropriate at its source, rather than trying to clean up a database that is already populated with bad data. He cites 10 "habits" of organizations that have been successful at this. These include such things as "Focus on he most important needs of the most important customers.", "Measure quality at the source, and in business terms", and so forth.
In short, Dr. Redman has produced an approach to the problem of managing data quality that is in terms of management priorities and concerns. This book should be on every CEO's immediate bookshelf.

A sequel that leaves you purringReview Date: 2007-06-29
As an animal lover, I have found myself absolutely falling in love with Laure Halse Anderson's VET VOLUNTEERS series. And, after reading FIGHT FOR LIFE, I decided that Sunita was certainly my favorite character out of each of the five volunteers. So I was thrilled to learn that HOMELESS was predominately about her. Anderson has painted a more in-depth picture of Sunita within HOMELESS. While, in FIGHT FOR LIFE, we learned a bit about her character; in this installment, readers have the opportunity to get inside her head, so to speak. We have the chance to see what an intelligent, smart individual she is; and get a close up view of her compassion and determination. The fact that Anderson gives us the opportunity to learn more about Sunita's family life, and learn why she is so crazy about cats only adds to the story. As with FIGHT FOR LIFE, Anderson has targeted a very important issue surrounding animals today: pet overpopulation. However, she also provides readers with facts about feral cats, and gives us the chance to learn more about programs that are being used throughout the country to help feral cats survive and thrive in the wild, without producing more offspring. Anderson continues to shed light on serious issues regarding animals that many authors are too intimidated to touch. And, by providing this information within such an interesting, fun series of books, she gives readers the chance to want to make a difference in the world for animals today, and gives us the information we need to be pro-active in society. The article she provides at the end of the story - told in Dr. J.J. Mackenzie's voice - is interesting, and sheds some light on what cats mean when they purr, knead, and so much more. This article is a fun addition to the tale, and provides an interesting conclusion to the story. A sequel that leaves you purring.

Love the book!Review Date: 2008-06-10
Well, they might as well have.
Starting from the idea that the reader can already draw enough to make a comic (there is no "How to draw a..." section), they mold the reader into a writer, agent, techie and business person. They pass on all of their secrets in a full confession sharefest that reads like a conversation between the authors (similar to the discussions on their "Webcomics Weekly" Podcast).
The book is full of humor and brilliant ideas. The art comes from each contributor's comics and really adds to the points of the book.
You should buy two books as one will likely fall apart from constant use and you will need the second to give to your children someday. I bought four extra copies and hidden them at the corners of the world, and in my will I have clues to find each copy in an elaborate race to determine who I will leave my entire fortune to.

Also Savitch summarizes every subsection and I am not 100% sure this is necessary in all subsections.
Savitch should urge his publisher not to begin a new subsection at the bottom of a page!
Savitch should make available more solutions in a separate manaul for those wishing it.
Overall I would say Savitch saved my day with my 2 JAVA courses. Deitel starts out with graphics, assuming the student will graps Java better but Deitel introduces some rather major concepts when doing this and I don't think the students would appreciate the complex ideas without using Savitch step by step methodologies. Deitel assumes a student undestands the concept of "extends", "implements" etc and this is exactly what graphics class uses and Deitel assumes students will understand these concepts just because they are graphical in nature. Savithc covers these concepts later when other major concepts are covered so that a student will appreciate the "extends" concepts much better.
So Savitch and Deitel cover the same material, but in different sequences. And I believe that Savitch's approach works better and helps the student understand the more difficult concepts later in the textbook.
