An engaging story by a GREAT MD about an amazing injustice

Though I am a little older than Dr. Edelin and only met him about 16 months ago when he gave the keynote address at the annual national convention of a group called Medical Students for Choice, I have followed his amazing and impressive career since I frist read of his indictment by an incredably biased and racist prosecutor in what was then the narrow minded and mostly Irish Catholic and racist controlled city that was Boston during the late 60s and early 70s.

Dr. Edelin's and my own story have many parallels, though I was born "poor white" into a racist culture in rural Arkansas and except for 4 years in the US Navy, have lived in this culture all of my life.

Dr. Edelin tells an gripping story of his childhood and young manhood in a racist society, one where he had to be smarter, kinder, better trained and better prepared than any of his white colleagues to even be allowed to attempt to realize his dreams of being a doctor and treating his patients with skill, compassion and amazing courage.

His is a story of liars, and honest men and women, of dedicted physicians and more than a few doctors and residents willing to lie, misguide and misdirect the jury of their, not Dr. Edlin's, peers. And always, the two major villians show up again and again, to do their best to figuratively lynch this incredably skilled, brave and capable young Black man... just because they thought they could, though he was guilty of nothing more than doing his best to treat his patients as he would like to be treated himself.

And he had a Judge who should have been impeached for incompetance, and a prosecutor who should have been hung. I wonder just how many innocent young men he sent to prison for life and to be killed so he could advance his career. Broken Justice? Sounds like Catholic Justice gone mad.

I have met Dr Edelin in 1975 and have known him during the post trial years. His motivation for the work he has done is nothing but honorable .. a man following his beliefs for the good and welfare of people. This book demonstrates, once again, the broken legal system, with all of its prejudice in a very polarized city, not unlike many tainted trials. In Ken's instance, it is shameful of our legal system to have put this esteemed and caring doctor through the ringer for selfish and biased reasons. Once I began this book, I couldn't put it down.

Emotional and Courageous!

Broken Justice captures its reader's attention from the very first page. This book is not only a story of a young Black doctor fighting for his rights in racist Boston, but fighting for the rights of all Women, in Boston and through out this country. It is hard at times to turn the page because of the injustice that keeps emerging on each page, but at the same time it is hard not to keep going so as to find out how this young doctor continued to survive through this treacherous time in his life, because the book grips you and forces you to continue.

This book is a must read for people of all ages, genders and races. If we are to unite as a country, it is pertinent for all of us to understand everyone's struggle. Dr. Edelin fought for himself, but more importantly he selflessly fought for others. And 30 plus years after his trial he still fights and believes in the same rights as he did then. Thank you for giving this book to us!

A great read!

I have known Dr. Edelin for a number of years and always have found him to be an engaging speaker and a great storyteller. This book did not disappoint. It is amazing to imagine one person going through what he went through....the turn of events was such that I couldn't believe that it was a non-fiction book!

This is an important book on the subject of Roe vs Wade and the parallels to a John Grisham novel in describing the court room scenes are accurate. I felt the energy of the 70's and his experiences as a young man faced with such a frightening indictment. Where it differs from John Grisham novels that I have read is that this was the first book I had where someone had gone in-depth into the medical profession and explained it in a way that made sense to a non-doctor. He makes the medical world accessible and interesting in the same way that Grisham and Turow have made the legal world accessible and interesting.

Overall this is a great read and one that I have already recommended to many others.

I was 16 when I read this book. I remember thinking that it would be good but it couldn't be as good as other books that I had read. Iwas wrong! If you havent read this book then you need to. It made me realize how bad killing your baby before its born can be. I also realized that boys can be total jerks and that I needed to really be careful. This book can tell your daugher everything that she ever needs to know. And if you read it with her it will be something that you will never forget.

My 14 year old daughter read this book and she couldn't put it down! She hates to read and this series has opened her eyes to the wonderful world of reading. In addition, it really spoke to her about how one night could change her whole life and the real difficulties facing teenage pregnancy.

Knowing that this book was endorsed by "Focus on the Family," I was apprehensive about reading it, fearing that it would give pat, spiritual, band-aid answers to real problems. But it doesn't. Thios book doesn't say, "Jesus is the answer, I'll pray for you, now go away." It follows the life of a young girl as she struggles with the decision of whether or not to get an abortion. For once, people are honest about the yelling and screaming coming from both sides of this issue. What I mean is, it's not just the "evil pro choice baby killers" who are preaching here, it's also the "backward pro lifers" who preach at Nikki. She's caught in the middle of these two opposing viewpoints, unsure of what to do. Meanwhile, her grandparents and her friend Jeff, some of the kindest, gentlest Christians, pray for Nikki, listen to her, and show her Christ's love through their actions. In the end, it's not yelling or preaching that will convince Nikki (or anyone) that abortion is wrong. It's hearing an unborn baby's heartbeat, and finding that it really is a PERSON, another life, growing inside a woman. Not just "pregnancy tissue" or a "fetus" that can be removed, but a real human being, created in the image of God. And this book shows that without being preachy. Halleleujah! I found myself crying at the end of this book, glad that I'd read it and eager to read the rest of the series! And the other books in the series are just as good. Overall, I highly reccomend these books.

Janet Folger's book "True to Life" is by far the best book I have ever read on the political scene surrounding the Life Issues. The book is written extremely well: It is interesting, easy to read, thought provoking, informative, humorous in spots, and enlightening...all at the same time. True to Life not only challenges our involvement into the Life Issues arena, but our living of the Gospels as well. Unfortunately, I don't have time to read like I used to, but the time I spent reading this was well worth every minute. I highly recommend!

This book is a must read for anyone who believes in the right to life for the unborn, the elderly and the disabled. The book is enlightening, inspiring, and motivating. It covers all aspects including the original intentions of the writers of the Constitution, legislation, media bias, America's future. Janet Folger has an ability to share her personal experiences in such a way that it leaves you feeling energized and ready to act. Considering the seriousness of abortion and euthanasia, the author manages to lift you with occasional humor. I highly recommend this book.

This well written book is as much an autobiography of a very brave and kind hearted person as it is a story of the circumstances surrounding the pro-life vs. pro-choice drama that is ongoing in America today. Through the experiences of this dedicated pro-life advocate we see an exemplary integrity that underscores a deep love for all humanity. The unborn, women and girls struggling with an unwanted pregnancy, and even pro-choice advocates are all treated with decency and respect in this book. If you want to know more about one of the greatest role models ever for the pro-life movement then look no further than this book. Janet and her millions of followers belie the negative stereotypes that the biased, left leaning media tries to hang on all pro-life people. To get the true flavor of the tactics and methodologies of one of the most powerful people in the pro-life movement you need look no further than this book. To discover all the choices for life for the unborn, that are sadly not emphasized in the pro-choice agenda, read this book. The abortion industry, a business dying from its own success, hopes you won't read this book, lest it loose even more customers. I enjoyed immensly reading this positive, thought provoking, and very uplifting book that is as its title promises, "True to Life."

Her approach to counselling issues has been a valuable addition to our already comprehensive library of abortion medicine texts and has proven to be an extermely useful tool for counsellors and clients at our Planned Parenthood of Australia clinics. It should be a must read for all in the abortion health care field.

I have worked in an abortion clinic for over twenty years and Anne Baker's work is required reading for all new counselors on our staff. In addition her book is an excellent resource for the seasoned counselor. Her expertise and sensitivity in dealing with a host of patient issues relating to abortion becomes apparent in the first few pages of this manual. She also manages to provide useful guidelines to help clinic staff deal with the special stresses involved in working in an abortion clinic.

Anne Baker's, "Abortion and Options Counseling", turns out to be an absolutely marvelous encyclopedia of her interaction with women undergoing termination of pregnancy. Her manual can serve both as a guide for the implimemtation and initiation of abortion counseling services for the office or a physician addressing the initiation of abortion services. On the other hand, the detailed attention to "clients who pose a challenge" and to the Fetal Indications Termination of Pregnancy patients can be a resource for offices and physicians who handle these very uniquie and specialized sitations..

This book reflects expertise, caring, and understanding of these difficult circumstances that some women experience..

This is one of those books that you have to buy multiple copies of because your own copy has so many notes you don't want to lose, and you just have to pass it's truths on to others. If you are focused on being 'pre-married', married or just wanting to be a better relater, you need to read this great manual and let it affect your style of relating. You won't be sorry and those around you will see a difference.

In a world of superficial relationships, this book helps men & women alike with the practicals of how to go deeper. It's biblically-based under grace and biblically solid, but it's not just for Christians. Chapter 3 is worth the price of the book, describing the elements of casual-close-intimate relationships. This book is a super guide for successful dating & pre-marital counseling, but it's also terrific for helping men & women alike overcome the competing, comparing, and conditional relating that inhibits deep friendships. It's been a life-saver breakthrough for me -- I was the poster-child of an emotionally shut down husband.

Miranda goes to a concert on her birthday with her friend Tasha and meets Prince Charming aka Keith Martin. He is the opposite of the boy she dated previously (jock Ryan). The book shows the blossoming of this new relationship and how it affects their family and friends. This book is so well written and so realistic that I kept wanting to read until I get to the end. Very believable characters with real issues teen sex, peer pressure and family values and etiquette. Looking forward to the author next novel.

It reminds us of our high school. The romance is really great and boyfriend is so cool (and handsome). The ex-boyfriend reminds me of every high school mean jock who wears a varsity letter and is a true jerk. They think that every girl is in love with them. Give us a break!
Poor Miranda does get into a bit of trouble tho.....

Miranda comes face to face with Prince Charming, but things don't always work out the way they are supposed to. Or do they? Ms. Taylor is dead on with her characters and their angst. Miranda and her family and friends face some difficult choices. Yes, the book is edgy, but don't let that stop you. Once you start reading, you will want to finish in one sitting. Great choice for anyone looking for a realistic adolescent novel.
I can't wait for her next book.

Reviewed by Susan Pettrone for Reader Views (1/07)

Miranda is awakened on the morning of her 16th birthday by her friend Tasha who informs her that she is going with her and her sister Carly to a concert that very night! Wildly excited about this fantastic turn of fate, Miranda doesn't realize that the concert will put into play a series of events that will change her and her life forever. Meeting Keith, a handsome artistic soul whom she falls in love with, is just the beginning of many changes ahead for both Miranda and Keith.

To say that the story is all pink flowers and sweet talk would be misrepresenting the book. It is more than that. It is a book that has its romantic moments which each young girl likes to read, but it also is a book that puts into words the difficulties and choices a young teenage couple must make as their relationship grows ever closer. Miranda is no innocent by any means within this book, nor is she a worldly wise young woman either. What she is, is a typical teen, caught between youth and adulthood and who makes one bad choice which later causes her to make another harder one.

From the beginning of their relationship, Miranda and Keith, meet in a semi-secret way, not telling Miranda's parents the whole truth about their meetings. Drawn into the plan for secrecy and innocent encounters is Mack, Miranda's brother and Tasha who find that they do in fact have more in common than they originally thought. The contrast between the two budding couples is interesting to watch unfold as both pairs learn more about each other and decide how to proceed in their relationships. The choices are as different as the couples are and the choices they make are ones that form a basis for what is to come next in the book.

The choice Keith and Miranda make to finally have sex is a common one for young couples, and one that they tried to put off for as long as possible. But the choice they make to have unprotected sex is one they soon find themselves regretting, for it is obvious that after one brief encounter, Miranda is in fact pregnant.

How Miranda handles this news, who she tells and how she tells them is a real part of this book as is her relationship with not only Keith and Tasha, but her brother Mack who is by now, not only her brother but her confidant too in matters of the heart. What the future holds for these two couples, the hard decisions they must make and how they come about their choices is what makes this book a "must read" for young teens. It is within the pages of this book that common teen problems are addressed and solved which change their lives forever. It is the type of book which you wish you could "rewind" parts of the story and make other choices for the characters but which you know, like in real life, is impossible to do.

I would highly recommend "What's Happily Ever After, Anyway?" for all young teens as it is well written, true to life and frank without coming off as "preachy." It is a book that will cause the reader to take pause and evaluate choices made and how those choices can change forever their lives. In reading this book, the reader cannot help but think long and hard about choices they will face and the consequences of each choice they do make.

A Great Book!

Michelle Taylor's What's Happily Ever After, Anyway? focuses on answering the title question in terms young adults can relate to. The characters she created are typical teenagers that readers can easily imagine having as friends, or perhaps representing someone the already know. She addresses important issues such as pre-marital sex, rape, abortion, dating, being a teenage Mom and even dealing with harassment in school. Taylor not only brings these topics to light but she does it in such a way that readers will be entertained, touched and informed all at the same time.

Miranda meets the boy of her dreams at a rock concert on her sixteenth birthday and quickly begins to believe she has found her Prince Charming. Though not a virgin, Miranda's disastrous relationship with a football star at her school has taught her to be more cautious with her body and more careful with her heart. Readers follow Miranda on a journey of self discovery as she talks to her parents about sex, deals with sexual harassment and an unexpected pregnancy. We suffer with her, agonize over her choices and hold our breath until the end of the novel.

Taylor does not preach to readers in this book. She manages to entertain readers while outlining all the options available to her heroine. There is no prejudice or judgment in this book. It is merely a look into the problems of an average teenage girl who makes a couple of wrong decision and provides a valuable lesson for young adult readers.

Through the magic of Taylor's storytelling Miranda's pain becomes their own, and her mistakes could possible become a life saving lesson for readers. More oriented towards girls, this book should be read by any teenage female who has questions about boys, sex or life in general for this book truly contains valuable life lessons. Recommended for readers 12 and up.

The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.

Celebrities talk about God in their life

(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)

How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.

The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.

Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.

The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.

Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.

I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!

I have read and re-read this book many times. This book covers all aspects of the sanctity as well as the abuse of life in our society. Must reading for people on either side of the life issues.

This book, small in size packs a powerful punch but it does so with the beautiful aroma of the red rose which graces the paper back cover, a credit to the eminently qualified author John Powell of the Society of Jesus. When the pro-life movement is villified and demonized it is important to return to the essentials of our movement which are clearly outlined in this gripping narrative. Weaving in his own personal anecdotes and reflections, Powell captured my heart and inspired a renewed vigor to fight the greatest evil alive in the world today... the "silent holocaust".

I read this book when it was new and even though it came out in 1981, it is just as true now as it was then. I think if people knew what abortion really is, they would be horrified and ashamed to have called themselves "pro-choice." After having an abortion, many women have read this book and realize their pre-abortion "counseling" was totally wrong and incomplete and they had not had enough information to make an "informed choice." No one told them what an abortion really was, a planned death of their child. Had they read this book ahead of time, they probably wouldn't have had an abortion. I speak from experience. This should be required reading in every classroom that teaches "sex education."

This was a GREAT BOOK!

This was a great book, I coundn't put it down until I was finsished! It's a pretty easy read, that covers abortion itself. It doens't condem or send a hate message to anyone, it sends the message of love to human life and that life must be respected also that pro-life people like myself are not insensitive people but that we care and love the babies and the woman as well. Also it talks about how many babies are experimented on and the "behind the secenes of what really goes on in an abortion clinc." also it breifly talks about the pain of euthansia and just how horrible that is in itself. it's a must read to both pro-choice and pro-life!

Excellent Book!

This is one of the very few books I have been able to read from cover to end. It displays both mantalities behind abortion, pro-life and pro-choice. It also is a book which opens your eyes to the world's ways today. I believe that every person should read this book. I recommend it highly.

Lydia has written an honest, moving, powerful story of her own life and experiences.
I am not a Christian, or a bieliver, yet I found her story a very powerful and moving account of her pain, lost, and of her recovery and healing through the power of Sisterhood, paryer and belief. It is a redemption story at it's best.

Lydia has borne her soul in this riviting account of her life and events surrounding an abortion at age 15. For background she shares contributing factors from her early life. The meat of the book is her journey from grief and pain to forgiveness and joy. She can't keep silent about the pain that abortion brought to her life or the joy she has found through the Mercy and Healing Power of Christ.
Her story will be particularly intersting to anyone that has experienced abortion either personally or through a friend or family member.
The book is easy to read and the story is presented in an unencumbered writing style.

I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. I had no idea of the potential range of emotional and relationship challenges caused by an abortion.

Lydia describes the challenges one faces relating to one's future children, sexual issues, fear and inability to bond, and depression and even suicide. I know there are thousands, if not millions of women walking around with all of these unresolved, painful issues that they don't know the root of and feel they cannot even speak about. Thank God Lydia could no longer keep silent.

The best part of her book is that she actually found healing for her pain and she shares how others can achieve it as well.

This is a "must-read" for all post-abortive women!

God bless Lydia and her family.

This book gave me a lot of insight into my own life EVEN THOUGH I AM CHILDLESS BY CHOICE.

I am so glad I read this book, and I hope this book will encourage others to share their life experiences regarding abortion. I also hope the book will encourage people to NOT keep silent regarding abortion or other important issues in their lives. Don't keep issues bottled up--talk about them!

Lydia Clarke has written a revelatory, intimate, and insightful first hand account of the truthful consequences of abortion. She bares her soul and provides the reader with valuable information on post-abortive stressors. If you care to know the TRUTH about the horrors of abortion and its aftermath results, this book is a must read!

I have never had an abortion, however, I found Lydia's story most compelling and heartfelt. Thus, all women (post-abortive, or not) CAN relate to Lydia's story at some level. She focuses on issues and/or themes of self-esteem, love, bitterness, and self-hatred. She also provides the reader with valuable resources (contact information) for post-abortive women searching for help for healing and wholeness.

Lydia's story is well written. Her writing style allows for an easy read as to capture the thought, clarity, heart, and intimacy of her text. One is not bombarded, or overthrown by unnecessary academic jargon.

If you desire to be set free from a HISTORY of physical, emotional and/or spiritual bondage and turmoil -- whether a victim of abortion or not -- this book is for ALL people; this book is for you! It's time to be SET free!

A very unique and different approach in healing the world, accessible to anyone who is open enough. A book that makes you think, realize and want to be more responsible with your own choices about conceiving and bringing a child into this world. Everyone should read this book but especially women in general, as much as couples having experienced stillbirth, abortion or considering the last one...

The spiritual guidance and clear instructions, including deeply healing prayers, will be a boost to anyone interested in pursuing a spiritual path full of light and love. I recommend it for anyone who has lost a child, has terminated a pregnancy, or who knows anyone who has gone through such an experience. A Cry From The Womb: Healing the Heart of the World is a spiritual guide for connecting with and healing the souls of children lost to sudden death, miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion. A disclaimer warns that A Cry From The Womb is strictly a spiritual book and does not offer any medical counsel, nor does it replace proper care from a physician. Chapters discuss the nature of the soul, the voice of the unborn, the power of prayer in fostering a healing journey, and case histories of individuals and couples rent apart by grief. A deeply moving and spiritual book; the authors wish to promote spiritual recovery and wellness shines through the pages. A Cry From The Womb cannot be neatly categorized as a pro-choice or pro-life book; though the author believes very strongly in the souls of the unborn and speaks of the negative impact abortion can have on both this life and the hereafter, the author also believes firmly that no woman should ever be forced to carry out a pregnancy. A Cry From The Womb is not about politics, but about spiritual healing from unbearable loss with the grace of God and His Angels.

We are all affected by the cycles of birth and life in more ways than the average person can perceive. No author understands this better than Gwendolyn Awen Jones. Her clean-cut explanations help us understand the many ways in which we are affected by our connections to our loved ones and how we must all work to heal ourselves. Her insightful advice is useful to everyone wishing to heal themselves, and in turn heal the planet, at this toubled time in our history.

Her antecdotal stories are profound and concise. The choice of stories covers a wide range of topics. Even if the reader has not been part of a similar story, each story has a message for all readers.

Her explanations about who and what we are as spiritual beings in this world is key to everyone's understanding of themselves and their purpose here on this earth. Just the glossary is a treasure in itself!

I have followed and practiced the simple prayer steps that Gwendolyn Awen Jones has written for us and must say that I feel more grounded and at peace than ever before.

Good transformational literature is hard to find. I have a library full of self-help books that I put down after a few chapters. A CRY FROM THE WOMB is a must-read for all spiritual seekers, mothers, fathers and anyone who wishes to understand themselves as a human being on planet Earth. It is an easy read that packs a big punch!
