Impressive Academic Argument for Equal Choice

Mark Graber writes an excellent, in-depth analysis on the issue of abortion. To start with, I have to mention over 30 pages
of well-researched bibliography with which Mr. Graber supports his argument. What I like about this book is its pragmatism
and a realistic analysis of the issue: enough of the philosophical/constitutionality debates, let us see how abortion law
on the books differs from abortion law in practice then let us arrive at a solution. Mr. Graber analyses pro-life and pro-choice
positions showing their strengths and weaknesses, and then goes for the kill with his equal choice position.

I am not alone in thinking that Room by laurence Fearnley is one of the best works of fction to come out of New Zealand in
recent years. Shortlisted for the Montana New Zealand book awards (new zealand's premier book awards) in 2001 - Room tells
the story of Amelia Walsh, a doctor who works in an abortion clinic in Christchurch , New Zealand. The book focusses on both
the personal and political nature of Walsh's work: her own lonliness, her connection with her patients (told through a series
of scripted dialogues), and the problems she encounters with increasingly threatening anti abortion protesters. One of the
main strengths of the book is its sparse yet poetic imagery - characters and places are rendered visible in a super-realistic
manner which insures that the book never falls into sentimenatlity or, on the other hand, didactics. The character of Amelia
is extrememly complex and her realtionships with her now dead mother, her ex husband and the father of one of her teenae patients
are extremely moving - particularlyin the way that she defnds herself against intimacy and its resulting vulnerability. This
book is groundbreaking. It should be a film - sowell is it imagined that every character and incident rings true - the feelings
are so sharp that they occassionally proke a wince in the reader. Ultimately this is a book about love and the failure of
love far more beautifully told than many books I have read.

Daniel C Maguire is professor of Moral Theological Ethics at Marquette University, a Catholic, Jesuit Institution, president
of the Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive Health and Ethics in Milwaukee, WI with a degree in Sacred Theology
from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
With a continuation of the growth of the global population, contraception or family planning and abortion becomes very critical and moral issues that face today's family, no matter where they are living or from what religion they stem. Sometimes the views of professionals, international organizations or agencies will eventually clash with the view of clergy and religious belief.
This book has 12 chapters: a Jewish perspective, Roman Catholicism, Protestant Christianity, Islam, Hindu view, Thai Buddhism, practices in Nigeria, American Indian traditions, Chinese considerations during the late Imperial period, Taoist approaches, Jainism with a concluding chapter on reproduction and sexuality in a changing world.
There are about 80 million pregnancies globally each year with about one third unwanted or mistimed. Fifty million end up in abortion with 20 million performed under unsafe conditions and 78,000 women die each year. Not to mention the hundred of thousands with short or long-term disabilities as a result. These fact makes this book very important and efforts by governments and United Nations to decriminalize and make abortions safer should be looked upon positively.
Many of the world religions have a say upon the issue of family planning, but the attitudes and rulings have fluctuated over time. The authors of this book from various part of the world and different religions present alternative interpretations of their various religion's view upon family planning and show a more wide and more open stand than the usual conservative held views that we generally hear.
We found this book important in the continuing debate on abortion and family planning from the viewpoint of religion.

This was an awesome book! In order for it to make sense, you have to read all the other books in the series first, though.
What made it so good? First of all, it was very up to date. This book showed how violence is becoming very present in the
world. Even the small town Nikki lives experiences threats and violence in the school. This added both a thrilling dimension
as well as the feeling that the author is not ignoring modern problems. Second, the reader finally gets to meet T.J, the
father of Nikki's baby. He was totally different than I expected, and Nikki's struggles with how to face- and forgive- him
were very obvious. Finally, Nikki has to determine, or rather redefine, her relationship with Jeff. When her grandparents
become concerned about them, and her grades and other activities begin to reflect how she chooses her priorities, it's clear
that she has to change something. I don't know if this is the last book in the series or not, but if it is, it is a very
good conclusion when everything comes together at the end. However, a sequel wouldn't be completely impossible. There's
still more that could be written about Jeff, and it would be nice to hear from T.J. again, then there's Hollis...
I couldn't find a flaw in this book. Over the entire series the reader becomes very close to Nikki and can feel her trouble. It's a wonderful series to read, and one I would highly recommend to any teenage girl who loves to read.

The seller (author) clearly went out of her way to send this to me promptly. In addition, the author eagerly and promptly
answered some questions which I had asked very extensively. I would recommend the seller to ALL.

Another terrific book by Nancy Baker Jacobs. THE SILVER SCALPEL has everything---an interesting plot, a likable, resourceful
detective in Devon MacDonald, suspense, humor, and a dash of romance.
Be sure to read the two previous books in the series, THE TURQUOISE TATTOO and A SLASH OF SCARLET, as well as Ms. Jacobs' other suspense novels.

I frist read this book in Everett WA in 1990. This collection of short essays is among one of my prize possesions of this
author. Anyone who has not read anyhting at all from this author would do well to start here. Arm yourself with the enlightening
influence of Garret Hardin. You don't have a right to read this book but you are free to choose to do so once you recognize
the necessity.
