This is a fast-moving book that gives a straightforward account of how one's childhood experiences and faulty programming make up who they are as sexual adults. Zoldbrod points out that the sexual issues that people have are not just a result of past sexual trauma or physical violence, but can be the lack of emotional nourishing in one's childhood family. She says that if kids don't learn how to have healthy emotional relationships with their family of origin they can't expect fo form healthy intimate relationships with their partners. I did not want to put down this book once I started reading it because many of the scenarios that she recounted affirmed to me that my own issues are a result of the experiences of my childhood and not some unique flaw in my personality.

Zolbrod is sex smart and street wise......A+!

Aline Zolbrod is a wonderful sex therapist. Turns out she's a wonderful writer too. Her book Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What To Do About It is on my list of favorites. If you understand where you've come from, you can maximize where you're going. So accessible and easy to read. Wonderful suggestions for ways to be in the driver's seat of your sexuality.
Self-esteem about sexuality, enthusiasm for healthy sexual relationships-that's what this book is about. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (1/06)

Much has been written about sexuality as well as theories have been formed about it. Most people seem to be curious about sexuality and want to explore the mysteries that are attached. However, not much has been revealed about the "why" certain behaviors occur until Dr. Aline Zoldbrod published her book "Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What to do About it."

Zoldbrod explores the multidimensional nature of human sexuality by presenting information through a cognitive base as well as emphasizing skills in communication and self-awareness. She covers sexuality from biological, moral, psychological, and social perspectives with research, client experiences, and theory.

According to Zoldbrod, what is considered as "normal" sexual behavior is typically based on observations made of family and society. She explains that how we are treated or what parameters are set upon us during our childhood reflects on sexual development. Touch, trust, feeling good about the body as well as oneself are just of the few dynamics that shape the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

"Sex Smart" gives the reader the opportunity to analyze, reflect, and come to terms with their own sexuality and behaviors through explanation and reading vignettes about experiences of others. After each chapter the reader can do exercises and self-assessments to become aware of their own issues and development. "Sex Smart" also gives the opportunity to examine the factors and decisions one has made in the past, and find ways to explore and replace them with new healthy patterns by re-writing the scripts brought down through the generations.

Although I highly recommend this book for every reader, it is necessary to note the importance of having a therapist at hand to discuss issues as they come during the reading and exercises of "Sex Smart." This is not a book to skim through in a day, nor is it a book to take lightly. It is a book that evokes much inner thought and exploration of behaviors and attitudes that have been framed within the identity of the reader.

For 15 years, I asked health care professionals, Why have I lost my interst in sex? Why do I love my husband as much as I do and yet increasingly fear intimacy with him? What's WRONG with ME?!! Until I read this book no one could give me the answers to questions I had given up asking. Dr. Zolbrod's one-on-one writing style and brief case studies helped me to see how much my parents attitude about their and my sexuality influenced me more the older I got and the longer I was married. The information within this book brought a level of understanding and new lines of communication my husband and I never had before. I have never been so grateful to find and read a book, and yes--this book changed my life.

Wow! was my first reaction when reading Aline Zoldbrod's SexSmart. I am a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist always in search of good reading material for my clients. SexSmart is tops on my list. On rare occasions I find a book that speaks the truth, dramatically enhancing a reader's understanding of self. If you buy this book, you are about to have this experience.

SexSmart isn't just another book on sexuality. SexSmart actually guides people through a personal understanding of who they are sexually - what a gift to readers wanting more for themselves and their sexuality. Readers can use this intensive exploration of how parental and social influences impact sexual expression to increase their current level of sexual satisfaction. It is in fact a book best read several times, as it is so full of great information. This is one of only a few books I keep available to my clients in the waiting room. I applaud Dr. Zoldbrod for a job well done!

E-business, E-marketing, and E-promotions managers, read it!

So maybe you've been thrust into the new E-whatever position in your company. You feel like a deer in the headlights when the E-consultants and E-agencies come in, start foaming at the mouth and spewing E-jargon. You wonder, what the heck are they talking about and what should I do? Get an agency that speaks English and read this book during the transition!

Laurie and Ken have compiled an impressive amount of quantitative and qualitative research on which to base "The Soul of The New Consumer". Far and away the most important statement to remember in this book is:

"In effect, the Web site experience becomes the primary vehicle for building and reinforcing brand identity and preferences."

Information architecture (the structure of a web site), Internet marketing and Internet branding converge in the mind of the consumer. They should be developed in tandem. The web site experience IS the brand experience; think about it, think about your own web usage experiences.

"The Soul Of The New Consumer" goes on to discuss issues of great concern to many web users. These include privacy, the (non?) existence of customer loyalty, traffic generation, conversion strategies, and perspectives of E-customers. The quantitative research in the book can be found anywhere, the analysis makes the book valuable and the moderated discussions with consumers add a touch of real world insight that is missing from many books.

Now that you've read this book, and have a new agency that speaks English, you'll have a better idea of how to communicate with them. You'll know more of the right questions to ask; the answers to look for and maybe even understand a little of the E-jargon should the conversation digress to that level. You might even feel comfortable enough to make up some of your own!

You won't believe the account of this experience. What happens when people are proactive about arranging with the hospital to pay out of pocket for an expensive surgery? What conditions do they encounter when they trek to India to have it done affordably? Where does the money go when we or our insurance company pays some 4000% of the cost of the same surgery done in another country? Warning, this book will spawn as many new questions as it answers. You won't find this stuff out anywhere else. Just read it.

WOW! Like any great piece of art, this book achieves the impossible - it speaks to a wide range of fundamental topics and raises profound questions, while simultaneously remaining very accessible, open to interpretation, and close to home. By staying within the context of her fascinating personal memoir, the author avoids political preaching and dry statistics. She doesn't tell you about the problems with our health-care system - she SHOWS you. She doesn't tell you what India was like - she takes you there. Come to your own conclusions about the developing world, about medical tourism, about our country's inability to take care of its citizens. But first, read this book.

I thouroughly enjoyed reading about this and realized that its much more affordable to do it this way, i.e. combining travelling abroad and major surgery, than to help finance the huge insurance complex in this country.

I've never known anything about India beyond dealing with customer service reps named "Buzz," "Chuck" and "Barbie" who mysteriously have heavy Indian accents. This book gives me a whole new vision of this fascinating country.

The medical saga is exciting but also tragic, in that it should never have had to happen. Look at the city life described in the book; look at city life in our country. Now ask: Why would a productive American citizen have to travel to India for affordable health care? Can't we take care of our own? This book examines the whys and hows of getting medical care overseas with the facts enveloped in a readable, personal story.

Fixing a broken health care system

State of the Heart shines a glaring spotlight on our broken health care system here in the United States. To think that a $200,000 procedure here can be done for less than $10,000 in India is unbelievable.

As one of millions of Americans who can't afford health insurance, after reading this book I would have no problem going to India for care. In Howard's case, the treatment he received in the hospital there was much better than the treatment he got in the hospital here in the States, at a fraction of the cost.

This book also gives you a sense of the streets of India, the sights and sounds, so different from our own. It portrays the people of India as gracious, caring souls.

I can only hope if the situation ever arises, I will have a guardian angel like Maggi to help me through it!

For anyone interested in the Civil War I highly reccomend this book. There are literally thousands of books on the Civil War but most of them focus on the political or military side. This book focuses on the aftermath of the battle, something that is overlooked by many historians. The reader will get a whole new perspective on the impact the War had on areas where armies clashed. Anyone even remotely interested in the Civil War should pick this book up. For those of you who have weak stomachs, do not read the book after a meal.

A sobering look at the aftermath of Gettysburg

Review Date: 2004-04-08
This book isn't about the battle of Gettysburg. It's about the price that was paid for that battle by the men who fought it and the citizens of the town. The aftermath of Gettysburg was a nightmare beyond imagination.

After the guns fell silent Coco shows us that there was much to do. Thousands of dead soldiers needed to be buried and tens of thousands of wounded to be treated. How do you do all that? The truth is you can't, at least not very well. In the end many bodies were buried in shallow graves that didn't take long to get uncovered by the elements. Some bodies were simply dumped into the crevasses in Devil's Den. The wounded in many cases were left outside for no other reason than you had over ten times as many wounded as you had population in Gettysburg and there simply wasn't enough room indoors for all the wounded men. Toss in countless horses whose corpses needed to be gathered up and burned and you begin to get the picture. The aftermath of Gettysburg was a gruesome horror story.

This book is not for the casual or beginning Civil War reader. There's nothing about infantry charges and military tactics here. Coco doesn't hold back and to be honest the book is rather disturbing. However it tells the story that I don't think any other book does and that's the frank truth about the aftermath of Gettysburg.

An extraordinary, grim look at the consequences of a great battle

Greg Coco's "A Strange and Blighted Land" is, as far as I know, a uniquely intimate and yet comprehensive look at the aftermath of Civil War combat. The Battle of Gettysburg left 6000 soldiers dead on the ground (with thousands more to later die of their wounds) and 20,000 seriously wounded. When the two great armies that had fought there marched away, the dead and the wounded remained in and around Gettysburg, creating a horror worthy of an inner circle of Dante's Hell. This is an unflinching look at the days, weeks, and months that followed. I see that a previous, anonymous reviewer at this site complained about the "author's incesant anti-war sermonizing." To the contrary, I consider that Coco did little "sermonizing". Rather, he lets the eyewitnesses speak for themselves, quoting liberally from a vast array of primary sources. The result is a powerful, fact-packed book that is certainly grim, even gruesome, and far removed from the conventional romanticing and glamourization of the very deadly consequences of genuine 19th century warfare. I think that anyone who finds him- or herself thinking back to the supposed glory of Civil War battle where everyone dies heroically and cleanly should read Coco's book as a strong antidote against such a false picture.

A Blackened Battlescape

After the shooting stopped at Gettysburg, within a very short time the whole landscape had turned black from the flies spawned in the bodies of the fallen. The earth was soiled and black with grease and filth and the very air was heavy with foulness.

This is not a book for the faint-hearted, but it is a superbly well-researched account, drawn from eyewiteness statements and official documents of what happened when nearly 10 000 dead and two or three times that many wounded were left in a quiet farming community by armies that had gone elsewhere.

This is essential reading for anybody wishing to know the whole story of Gettysburg. It has many maps and illustrations and photographs not seen elsewhere, and a comprehensive set of notes.

Gettysburg and the Horrors of War

Review Date: 2004-09-29
The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was the largest ever fought on the American continent and the pivotal battle of our Civil War. Following the battle, with the retreat of Lee's Army and the pursuit by Meade's, there was a pressing need to take care of the dead, wounded, and destroyed that the armies left in their wake. There also was, and remains, a need to reflect upon the significance of the Battle and the lessons to be learned from it.

Gregory Coco's book, "A Strange and Blighted Land" (1995) gives a comprehensive account of the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Coco is a Park Ranger at Gettysburg, and he hasa written extensively and well about the battle. He is also a Vietnam veteran. His history in this book stresses eloquently, the carnage of war, its terrors and pain, and its irreplaceable cost in human life and treasure.

The book is arranged in five rather lengthy chapters. In the first chapter, Mr. Coco offers his readers a tour of the Battlefield in which he presents eyewitness accounts of the death and destruction evident over the 25 mile square Battlefield. The second chapter discusses the dead of Gettysburg and their burials. There is excellent historical material here about the establishment of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. In his next chapter, Mr. Coco discusses the Gettysburg wounded, both North and South, the medical and surgical practices of the day, and the camps set up in haste to care for the masses of grievously wounded soldiers. In his fourth chapter, Mr. Coco discusses the treatment of prisoners of war, and the fate of the many stragglers and deserters which followed in the wake of the battle. In his final chapter, Mr. Coco discusses preservation efforts for the Battlefield, culminating in the establishment of the Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895.

I have read several other accounts of the aftermath of Gettysburg. Mr. Coco's book is by far the most thorough. He has the factual details at his command and presents them in a convincing manner. He shows great familiarity with the Battle itself, and discusses well the controversies and issues in determining the numbers of the killed, wounded, and missing.

But there is much more to this book than a factual recounting of the aftermath of a battle. The book is written in an appealing, personal, sometimes buttonholing style in which Mr. Coco seems to be at the readers side offering observations and commentary on the significance of the events set forth in his story. He offers opinions on a variety of topics emanating from his reflections on Gettysburg and on war. (Specifically, Mr. Coco shows a healthy skepticism in matters of religion.) Mr. Coco focuses on the meaning to be drawn from Gettysburg and from our Civil War. His own perspective is clear. Mr. Coco is opposed to efforts to glorify or romanticize war. Again and again, he stresses the horrors of war and tries to impress upon his readers that the greatest lesson to be learned from Gettysburg is -- to try to prevent such things from happening. Thus his book concludes (p.373)

"Let us now leave behind the aftermath story with this hope: that for each and every attempt to parade the 'pomp and circumstance' of war, we give equal time to the corrupt and merciless monster shielded smugly within, because, 'if the bugler starts to play, we too must dance.'"

This book is both an excellent history and a deeply-felt attempt to think about the meaning of Gettysburg.

This is a book I picked up on a whim, and it blew me away. It seems to me more than just a lesson in dogs and ratting; it is a lesson about mind over matter. Here is a guy who made reading about rat hunting as exciting (to me) as stories I've read about big game hunting in Africa. Maybe it was just his indomitable spirit; either way it is a good, short read.

This book is a favorite of mine. It is one of the best books on hunting ever written. Despite its apocalyptic setting, "Tales of a Rat Hunting Man" contains more wildness and freedom than the vast majority of books and magazines on hunting. That description doesn't do it justice. This is a fun book, one that you won't be able to put down. The descriptions of rats and terriers and rat hunts will take you to a world you never knew existed. Rat hunting is a weird pursuit, and Plummer conveys it with humor, adventure and passion.
The introduction by Steve Bodio is worth the price of the book.
Read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I absolutely love this deck. I have this deck, the Universal Deck and the Universal Waite deck. I use all 3 regularly, but this deck is my personal favorite (all three decks are highly recommended by me). In fact, I have this deck and the Universal as my travel deck in the mini size.

The deck follows the visual symbolism of the Rider-Waite decks. However, there are a few differences- 10 of Swords, Strength and Death come to mind. This may irk some readers already used to the Rider-Waite decks. Don't get me wrong- I do love the Rider-Waite deck (and the Rider-Waite clones like the Universal and Universal Waite). That said, I actually really enjoy the more whimsical twist on the 10 of Swords and Strength in this deck. I also find the different take on the Death card in this deck to be very apropos in the overall theme.

I think this deck may be perfect for those looking for a more positive take on Tarot symbolism, those with more sensitive souls that find the original Rider-Waite to be a little grusome, and kids interested in learning the tarot. I think both beginners and adept readers can both enjoy this deck.

The card stock is very high quality, print quality and color is excellent. The artwork is top-notch.

I also recommend the Tarot of the Baroque Bohemian Cats for those interested in decks with feline themes. However, I personally prefer artwork over photography- hence I have the Tarot of the White Cats instead.

If you love cats (or even if you just like cats) but want to stay with a "standard deck" these are the cards for you! Beautifully illustrated and fashioned after the Raider-Waite Tarot (except that all the people are cats), these cards are fun and easy to read!

A few of the cards have slight variations from the Raider-Waite Tarot ... for example, the 10 of Swords shows the picture of the Swords piercing through a sheet or blanket that is lying on the ground, but the cat has escaped ... perhaps not however, before first using one of his nine lives!? It kind of gives a slightly different feel than the "standard" meaning.

A cat has been added in the Ace cards. How fun! In the Ace of Coins card for instance, the cat is pouncing on the coin which to me, not only gives the meaning of a potentially good opportunity involving money but also that the opportunity should be pounced on! (I love it!) And in the Ace of Rods the cat is "digging his claws" into the staff (or rod). You can work that one out for yourself. At any rate, the variations are wonderful and give additional meaning to the cards.

The backs of the cards are also beautiful showing a blue background bordered with an ornate golden frame. A white cat sits in each of two golden chalices that are stem to stem on the card. Beautiful!

I would definitely recommend this deck to anyone and especially to cat lovers!

How I got into Paganism

I absoloutly loved this book.
I found that it brought me well on my way down the path of paganism, and it even introduced me to my patron goddess, Scathach. This book changed my life.
It has very good spells and rituals that have all worked for me before, and is one of the few books I've read where the author doesn't seem a little bit preachy and bothersome.

I believe that Catherine Wishart created a wonderful book to inspired younger woman in their personal search for religion and to better themselves. This was highly creative by using costuming and the like to get in touch with their inner goddess. The only low point is her constant emphasis on getting a boyfriend, body image and the use of Celtic deities. But otherwise a fun study!

A useful and creative book for all ages

The title of this book is misleading. It's called "Teen Goddess," but I really feel that the material in this book is useful for any woman (of any age) exploring goddess spirituality.

In the first part, Wishart discusses important tools such as prayer, affirmations and the basic ideas behind magic. It should be noted that her explanation of magic covers mostly principles rather than going into a detailed how to explanation (like "sprinkle herbs on altar" or "anoint the candle with ____ oil"). Also, her conceptions of prayer and magic are very similar. Even so, the explanations are all clear and the text is good so long as you're not stuck on the processes explained in all the Wicca 101 books.

The next section of the book introduces the goddesses. There is a chapter for each one. In each goddess chapter, Wishart tells a myth, suggests prayers and rituals to get in touch with the goddess, and tells what situations this goddess can best help you with. Sometimes the spells are tailored for teens, but for the most part, anyone can use them as they are applicable to life situations that adults face as well. What seperates this book from all the other goddess spirituality books is the beauty advice. For each goddess, Wishart suggests ways to dress and do makeup and hair to invoke the goddess's energy. I personally think this is a great way to bring your spirituality into everyday life or just to bring a little extra something to rituals.

Other great features of the book are the exercises, called "Goddess Workout," sprinkled liberally throughout. These allow you to take the material in the book and actually use it in your life. The exercises range from guided meditations to journaling to artwork and more. You're sure to find something to inspire your imagination!

The only thing I might change is the juvenile tone in some places. For example, "magic can help you get cute boys to kiss you." Even if I were a teen, I probably wouldn't like that sort of phrasing. However, the good news is that this sort of writing is very rare so it's only a very minor problem.

Overall, this book gets a huge thumbs up. It's full of wonderful ideas and helpful information.

Tibetan Portrait is really what the name says - As a photographer myself I was touched by the beautiful and subtle imagens on the book. It also teaches us about the present situation of Tibet, a land which has been dominated by the Chinese since its invasion in 1949, under Mao-Tse Tung's force. It's interesting and very easy to read and understand history. The pictures are as if you were transported into time and it's hard to believe they've been shot ( sort of )recently. And it also has a quick information about the equipment the author Phil Borges used to take them. It's the sort of information a photographer is always glad to see! Finishing is great, beautiful paper with a hardcover and jacket. Great work!

I love the work Borges has givne us. It is a great display of some people in Tibet that are special in their character, soul, and appearance. His rendition of the photos in a combined B&W and slight color tint really works. His description and obvious connection with each of the subjects is strong and it comes through in his work. I liked the children especially, for despite their most difficult of circumstances, they appear hopeful and dignified. Wonderful job.

One of the most beautiful books I have ever seen.

This book was sent to me by a friend overseas, and I fell in love with it the moment I opened it.
Borges' photographs capture the very essence of these proud, wonderful people, and every person I have shared it with has falled in love with it as well.

Namaste.

A Visually Stunning Portrait on the Theme of Compassion

Phil Borges presents, through the medium of photography, a project that brings attention to the situation in Tibet. Both stylish and yet sensitive, Borges uses an extensive cross section of subjects to accomplish this. He brings to the project, like I mentioned above, an extensive cross section not just of subjects but locations as well that exemplify the phenomenal complexity and diversity in that country. An example is the portrait of Yama, which caught my eye, who could be any child in any place in the world. I might be waxing "noble savage" here but does she not deserve a childhood just like any child in the globe? With text from such notables as Nobel Peace Laureates like Elie Wiesel and His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso - the book is a sure hit and a must for every home. Not to be outdone are other contributors who themselves are "heavy hitters" in the discourse of Tibet and Tibetan issues - Robert F. Thurman and the late Galen Rowell. Phil Borges presents us with nothing less than a tour de force of visual stimulation coupled with profound text and a stylish presentation. A keeper that will stand the test of time.

I bought this book for myself when my father was still alive but terminally ill. The words and the illustrations were simple yet profound and spoke directly to my heart. When my father died, I gave this book to my mother who only had positive things to say about it. During my father's wake, I shared this book to a friend who just lost her brother. She found so much comfort in it that she wanted to memorize a phrase from the book. I am thankful for people like Rusty and Christa who share their gifts to help heal the world one person at a time.

When I experienced a year of loss which included the death of my husband, this was the one book that brought me peace and hope for the future. It can be read in a moment, in an hour, in a month or a year. The text is simple yet beautifully presented, and the accompanying art is uplifting.

A friend gave me this book in 1996 when my mother died. It brought me so much comfort then, and still does. The simple, and eloquent phrases and drawings together kindly provide understanding to the feelings experienced while grieving. I frequently re-read it. I was very sad when it went out of print, and purchased two used copies to give to others. I'm very happy to see that it's back!

My best friend gave me this book when my Mom died. It was overwhelmingly the most comforting words and pictures I read that day and the weeks afterward. If you want to give some comfort to someone you love, or if you need some comfort of your own, this book will give it to you. I have had it now for 15 years, and when I re-read it, it still delivers - even after all this time.

my best friend died almost 2 years ago, and i almost killed myself over it. she was more like a sister to me than a friend. our families were so close. i started seeking therapy, and my therapist read this book to me, and it really helped me. i bought the book for me, and my deceased best friends mother. its a wonderful book, and it truly helped me to get through the toughest time of my life. i read the book tonight for the third time, and realized that the feelings that its describing arent the feelings i am going through, but the feelings that i have overcome. i would love to personally thank rusty berkus for his amazing help by writing this book, and i recomend it to anyone who is grieving over any lost. god bless!
