Eldercare in Texas presents the basic information family caregivers need to know to care for their aging spouse, parent or relative. Davis covers legal & financial concerns, housing options and end-of-life issues in a no nonsense way. The glossary is particularly helpful. Her personal anecdotes show the reader she doesn't just write about eldercare, she has lived it. A must read for any family caregiver in Texas.

I am a social worker and work just with Texans. This book is the most resourceful book I have had in years. The elderly in Texas did not know that half of these resources are available to them. I encourage family caregivers to purchase this book.

My mother-in-law had Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. I bought this book because I read on a PSP online forum that it was really helpful to caregivers & families of people with this disease. The author does a great job of sharing her story and being honest & upfront about the challenges & rewards of caring for someone with a devastating neurological condition.

Inspiring love story for any caregiver

My mother was diagnosed with PSP 10 years ago. Never could I imagine that such an uplifting story could be written about such a dreaded insidious disease. Janet Edmunson has captured the joy and heartache of caregiving superbly.

A profound and soul-baring memoir of observing twilight years.

Written by inspirational speaker Janet Edmunson, Finding Meaning With Charles: Caregiving With Love Through A Degenerative Disease is a personal testimony concerning the experience of caring for a loved one through the progression of Parkinson's Plus syndrome. The importance of the serenity prayer - "To accept what I cannot change" - the test of faith in God that is watching a loved one gradually die, and the little day-to-day aspects of life. A profound and soul-baring memoir of observing twilight years.

Doing It The Right Way!

A Gathering of Wisdoms is probably the very best documentation I've ever come across that focuses on the "right way" of working with people, whether they are of the Original People, or if they're non-native. Sterile environments and a counselor's "power" aren't what makes the changes...it's reaching out sincerely, with respect, and the desire to understand. And, this "A Gathering of Wisdoms" is a tremendous help to those who are reaching out to help others from their hearts! Lin

Very Informative even for the Layman

Foremost in today's fast-paced technological progress is the facility to access information. Health, no doubt, features prominently among any individual's areas he or she wants to keep informed about. One particular area is how the urban environment might affect his and his family's health. For obvious reasons comprehensive and satisfactory information in this regard is not readily available in the mass media. In the "Handbook of Urban Health" over forty specialists in this field treat this subject from a number of angles and make it possible, even for the layman, to grasp all the intricacies connected with health problems prevailing in today's cities. For the most part these research reports are quite readable. This is no easy task considering the complex make-up of today's urban populations. I highly recomend it.

Excellent for the scientist, interesting read for the layman

This book is extremely well-planned and presented. The introductory chapter expounds the new concept of "Urban Health" both for the professional and the aspiring student. It also sets the scope of the book as being a "bridge between urban health inquiry and public health practice." This is achieved by the introduction of the Integrative Chapters which come at the end of each of three parts i.e. Populations, Methods and Practice. These integrative chapters are short and written in an easy to read, fluent style. They are excellent introductory pieces for those outside the field who want to have a quick overview of the book, and for the student who expects a non-biased commentary on the ideas expounded on in the previous chapters As well, they also form the thread which links such divergent topics as urban planning, legal frameworks, cost effectiveness, urban health in developing countries, in one particular city and in huge cities in general, in the environment and in the customs and practices of the populations who inhabit these environments. This book is recommended both for the general reader and as a textbook for the newly emerging science of Urban Health.

This book is particularly well written and organized, providing an overview on the health of cities. It has information on the U.S., but also some especially well constructed chapters on urban health in developing countries. The book covers health issues for special populations such as the elderly and children, but then also goes on to discuss methods for assembling or being a consumer of relevant health information. Finally, the book has a section for public health practice that was put together by some of the most experienced experts in the country. While unique as a reference book for those working on the issues of health in cities, this also can be a good text book.

Love in a Time of Hate: Liberation Psychology in Latin America

Excellent presentation of the reality behind the headlines.

This book is the one to read if you want to understand the violence--both public and private--that shook Latin America in the last 15 to 20 years. Hollander goes behind cliches about "latin", "Argentinians" and other pat explanations for the Dirty War, the coup in Chile and other right-wing activity against both soldier and civilian. Hollander shows both the class and psychological underpinnings of this period, intertwining marxist theory with psychoanalytic insight. She tells the story through ten psychoanalysts who fought the military in their various countries, who had to either flee or go into hiding, but who all strove to understand their countries. The combination of the analytical and human stories is spellbinding.

Great text for teachers

Hollander has done a marvelous job of situating her subject in the context of modern Latin American history. Using this book as a supplemental text, teachers can enrich courses in political science, sociology, anthropology, Latin American studies and 20th century history. For certain courses in social psychology this book is essential. Students of the history and psychology of the Holocaust will want to read Hollander. High school teachers who have had "Facing History" training will find this book full of suggestive ideas and curriculum materials.

Psychoanalysis meets Marxism meets Transnational Psychology

Review Date: 2000-03-27
Not many US psychologists know a lot about psychology in Latin America, whether in terms of history or theory. Nancy Caro Hollander's book provides an interesting introduction to both through the use of historical memoir centering upon six prominent psychologists--many of them European emigres--situated in the Southern Cone region (Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay). Her narrative examines how their classical psychoanalytic training, animated yet challenged by their Marxist political commitments, ultimately unfolded and became transformed in the crucible of the revolutionary (and counter-revolutionary) political environment of mid-century Latin America. These psychologists developed and courageously enacted a personally, professionally, and politically risky activist psychotherapeutic praxis which stands as an interesting counterpoint to traditional US approaches. This book will be an enlightening and thought-provoking read for those psychologists who are genuinely interested in cross-cultural perspectives on psychological theory and praxis, politically-engaged psychology, activist psychology, and/or history of psychology from a global perspective. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which combined history, political science, and psychology, was quite intellectually stimulating. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

First of all, this is more than a review about the book but also about the man Mr. Leeland. This book is the story of Mr. Leeland's son at a very young age, needing a marrow transplant, not only did the students at his school come together and help him out so did the whole community.... FROM THIS: Mr. Leeland has founded the Sparrow Clubs in schools around the country and has raised over $750,000 for "broken sparrows". . .and he believes in kids helping kids.

This book is not only inspirational for those who know cancer, and sickness, but for those of us who never dealt with that issue this book is VERY inspiring . . . and very full of hope and love. Mr.Leeland writes a easy to read, human, full of true feeling and very much full of his insight, and HUGE AMAZING heart. I recommend this book to anyone!!!!! Do yourself a favor, read about GOOD people doing GOOD things....

I couldn't put it down...

What do you do when you've just moved to a new school and a new job and your 6-month old baby is diagnosed with leukemia? What do you do when the operation costs $205,000 and the insurance company won't pay for it? This is the story of the Leelands, a Christian family who goes through a nightmare, and of the junior high school and community that reaches out to them to save the life of one small sparrow.

I was reviewing this book while creating a library for our middle school. It caught my attention immediately, as one of my former students has leukemia. As I read it, I began to understand the terrible struggle that my student and his family were going through. And I was touched by the honest description of the Leeland's ups and downs, by the sacrifices made by the kids in Kamiaken Junior High, and by the faith the Leelands showed in a God who sustained them as they went though this tragedy.

An inspiring and moving glimpse into reality

I was one of the students that attended Kamiakin Junior High when the Leelands went through their test of faith. This book accurately depicts the real life events that surrounded the events leading to the life saving bone-marrow transplant of Michael Leeland. It is refreshing to hear about a community pulling together and turning a desparate situation into one filled with pure hope and faith. Read this book if you ever feel there is something you can't accomplish in life@

Polacco is one of my favorite Children's authors. It is a bonus that she's from here in Michigan and so a lot of her stories make sense from a geographic & cultural perspective. She covers so many great topics in formats that are fun for both kids & adults. If you ever have a chance to hear her speak in person, GO! She's an amazing role model having overcome learning disabilities to become a famous author and illustrator.

This book is a great example of how neighborhoods can band together to help each other out and create a more caring and supportive community for all residents. Just a little leadership and a good listener, willing to step out on a limb, can make all the difference. If there were more Hensley's in the world, it would be a better place all around.

Of all the texts I have read concerning Africa and its political/economic problems, this is the best contribution to understanding the motivations of those involved in providing humanitarian assistance. It represents ultimately a message of hope which counters the many pessimistic texts covering this area. The hope is neither misplaced or naive, but is a product of a level of understanding on the part of the authors rarely grasped I think by similar authors. Highly recommended.

The criticisms I can aim at this book are few: there's some needless reiteration of points made early on and some loss of context in the wash of events described. Both are stylistic and really just matters of taste.

Knowing only what an outsider can glean about MSF, this seems a wholly objective, balanced assessment of the group(s), its membership(s) and the circumstances, compromises, and pervasive questions attendant to both. The very real limitations and dangers of international aid are presented frankly, as is the selfless dedication of the MSF staff. Individuals are not squeezed into comfortable categories; the complexities, even the occasional flashes of swagger or ugliness, of each participant are served up with relative detachment.

As an introduction to the politics and human costs of genocide (admittedly from a singular, but coherent political perspective), it's hard to beat.

The photographs, which portray a parallel narrative, are likewise honest, and both stories are rendered with sufficient feeling expose what is truly uplifting about MSF.

Back in 1970, wading through a mire of academic prose in graduate school, I was dazzled by my discovery of Nancy Milio's new book, "9226 Kercheval." Not only was the author a nurse (like me), she was working in the community (like me). Better still, she wasn't pontificating or theorizing. In her own voice, she told the story of how she worked with residents of a restless, inner-city neighborhood just coming to grips with the potential of black power, to start a health center for women and children. It was hard slogging, but worth it in the end. I never would have guessed that, ten years later, I'd be engaged in a similar undertaking, albeit in very different circumstances--and writing about it. A couple of years ago, I begged a friend for her precious copy of the original hardback edition and reread it. It still elicited a "Wow!" Now I've got my own copy. I hope all of you reading this will consider doing the same.

I am three weeks from graduation, and did not have an understanding of pharmacology, but when I found this book in the store, I had to purchase it. Any book written by this series is worth having for an emerging practical nurse. The study guide is comprehensible as well. At least, I'll have a mastery of the drugs by the time I take the state boards!
