Community Health Books

After suffering from migrain headaches for over the past decade, this book provides good insight into the root causes of the brain pain as well as good steps to avoid the headaches. This book provides a practical guide to using prayer, as well as more "tangible" treatments. I've found the skills I've learned through this book to be very helpful, as I'll do anything to avoid having to take the medications for migrains. So far, so good.

Professor emilie townes has written an important and often-overlooked book about African Americans and health care. She begins and ends her argument with scripture, and while scriptural references are not used throughout (indeed parts of the book have not religious content at all), the ideas of her chosen scripture passages give a foundation for the book. Prof. townes has a command of the US health system (with all its problems and solutions) and deftly shows how Black Americans are too often left out of the health equation altogether. More than just another doomsday version of everything we're doing wrong in America, Breaking the Fine Rain of Death gives us hope for the future and at times concrete ways to work toward healthier communities for all. In this, she truly offers an "ethic of care" upon which churches and religious leaders can build.

Great for review for NCC certification exam.

I own the entire series of these books. Each one is worth the price (if you buy them used). Don't pay full price but if you can get them used, do it. The care plans aren't very involved, but the rationals are really good. If you were to buy only one or two of these books, I recommend the critical care ones. These are a great reference!

This is an important book for anyone contemplating design and development of a HRSA Division of Nursing application for nursing practice arrangements in the community. It assists in the process of completing the grant application, describes issues and problems, and is relevant to data collection and reporting outcomes.

It does well at giving an over view of how community health promotion works in real life. However, it can be a little pie in the sky.

This book provides a good overview of the field of Community Mental Health. I particularly liked the history of Community Mental Health in the U.S. and the discussion on the overuse of psychotropic medications. A case study of a mental health center in the South Bronx provides a real-life example of how successful a Community Mental Health program can be. I plan on recommending the text for a graduate class on the same topic at our local university.

I have worked in home care for 8+ years and have the reponsibility to precept new nurses entering the environment of community nursing. I have utilized many books during precepting but have found the above book to be superior to others and a valuable resource tool to assist new employees with the transition from the acute, SNF, or doctors office to Community Based Nursing.

Dr. Edelstein is careful and methodical in his telling of the enormous psychological impact of water contamination. He is especially informative about the factor of "place" as it affects individuals and families whose wells are poisoned.

Facing retirement in a few years and wanting more insight than that provided by Continuing Care Retirement Communities themselves, I began my "research" on Amazon and found first Sylvia Sherwood's work. It nicely laid the groundwork for subsequent reading, summarizing and analyzing a variety of statistics as well as interviews with numerous adults living in the CCRC's studied. Though I found the research data, may I say, limited, in that it dealt with a relatively small sample of communities, I have had no reason to doubt the conclusions drawn. It is a small, manageable text, which is a plus, and I am pleased to have it at hand in my library. However, there are broader and deeper studies available.
