I graduated from LPN school in April 2006. I wanted one book to use as a reference rather than searching through all of my previous books, and I always loved the LPN thread books. They are specifically for MY practice, and I do believe that RNs can also benefit from using this text. I purchased this after I started working and I read it once or twice a week to keep up with information. Well worth the purchase, folks!

A difficult process made easier by this book

Divorce is messy. Divorce is scary. This book will guide you through every stage of the process, from deciding whether to divorce, all the way to starting your new life post-divorce. Anyone considering or already immersed in a divorce in the state of Connecticut should have this book as a reference.
My spouse and I did not know whether we wanted to mediate or collaborate; after reading one chapter we went the collaboration route. (The info on litigated/contested divorce kept us on the path to collaboration!)
Ms. Stark writes clearly & concisely. The chapters are well organized to follow the chronology of a divorce. Frequent icons in the margins call attention to certain aspects of your decision making and give advice on the steps involved. The layout is clean and highly readable.
Many references in the back of the book help one find support, services, and materials to get you through. I purchased three other divorce books at the same time, but found myself relying on this one alone.
Consider this a necessity. Consider this helpful even if you don't live in Connecticut!

Amazingly helpful!

Ms. Stark's book offers both efficiency and compassion as she helps divorcing couples work through the process. Her information is accurate and precise. The advice she provides will enable reasonable people to find resolutions to many of the natural flashpoint issues natural to divorce.

Besides outlining the value of the mediation process in reaching closure and saving money, Stark provides a step-by-step how-to guide. Just as important, she offers an overview of the psychological stages of divorce that offers reassurance and preparation.

As a person using this book myself, I can recommend it to other Nutmeggers who find themselves needing to end a marriage. Doing so is always painful; Stark offers a guiding hand to help manage this passage.

I highly suggest anyone thinking about divorce buy this book first! It doesn't matter if you are from NY or not, the book explains enough about the process that it works for most states. Great Book!

Fantastic, I felt empowered and less emotional. Great book.

This book held me to the facts. The forms and charts helped me to fill in the blanks at my own pace and therefore the whole process of divorce was much less overwhelming. I still needed professional help at times, but I was educated and prepared for such times. Great book for a difficult change in life.

From Kosovo To Kabul: Human Rights and International Intervention

Intro to International Studies

This book has three themes in it: Universality, Empowerment, and Human-Centered Approach. All these themes deal with the human rights approach to foreign relations and intervention. Ideally, the the concept of human rights sounds okay and progressive. However, Chandler reveals the flaws of the human rights approach to international relations and how it undermines democracy. The irony of the human rights approach to world affairs is that it undermines democracy and even republic forms of government. Sometimes democracy is simultaneously presented as a by-product of ethical intervention, which is the case with President Bush. Yet, Chandler argues that human rights motivated intervention is a polarized effort that undermines automony of states and individuals and also it undermines the political system. Chandler
presents the example of Kosovo as the example of failure of ethical intervention that inadvertently creates a fragmented society without the moral cohesion the intervention is supposed to produce. The latter parts of the book seem to mention the emergance of a liberal elite which uses ethics to create a New World Order with moral superiors in control. This sounds rather radical, yet this book does a good job of presenting the case that ethical intervention is not what it appears to be. The book brings shocking instances of dubious international law practices and it shows a lack of structure in the ethics first defense. There seems to be no objective criteria or accepted moral system to guide the decision making of the so-called liberal elite and NGO's of Chandler's. In addition, the book introduces the concept of a new political system that is disenchanted with the status quo and the presents a growing emphasis on normative forms of reasoning for international intervention. Lastly, Kosovo to Kabul presents a new non-functional "political" system that legitimizes hedgemonic practices.

Superb demolition of warmongering

This outstanding book shows how British and US governments use the anti-democratic human rights ideology to boost their image and support foreign interventions. Chandler proves that attacks on states' sovereignty are also attacks on democracy.

A government's duty is to its own people, where there is accountability: only within a state can a people control its government and govern its affairs. But now a liberal elite of `the great and the good', a `global civil society, independent of states and state boundaries', appoint themselves guardians of others' rights, as against the rest of us, mere `vested interests'.

`Our betters' redefine political matters as moral or legal, to be decided not in public by the people, but behind closed doors by World Bank or European Central Bank, by Royal Commissions, judicial reviews, task forces or think tanks, and at work by ethics committees and Quality Assurance groups.

Abroad, Blair uses a `people-centred' approach of rights enforcement, which trumps peacemaking and negotiations. `Morality' and `international justice' trump law and destroy sovereignty. ...

THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON TRIAL FUNDAMENTALS...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-08
This reference book tells you everything that you wanted to know about trials, but were afraid to ask. It is an excellent reference work for law students or inexperienced trial lawyers who want to grasp the fundamentals of trial techniques, so as to at least look and sound as if they know what they are doing. It is a comprehensive work that covers methodology, as well as trial strategy.

The book gives the reader instructive examples on ways of accomplishing a specific task, which, while not dispositive, are invaluable to the inexperienced. It gives the novice a starting point from which one may develop his or her own particular style. The book offers basic trial techniques without which no novice trial lawyer should be. It is your basic primer on trial work with the emphasis on jury trials. It is well organized and easy to follow. If you only have room for one trial techniques book on your shelf, this should be the one.

There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators). A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques is wonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons. Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. If you have any use for attempting to organize a trial, or if you are a student of the law, this book is for you.

These cards are for any law student interested in reinforcing the basic concepts of future interests. Unfortunately, most textbooks on future interests do not provide a way for students to test their knowledge. These cards are a perfect way to do so by providing excellent examples of issues common to the study of future interests. The cards cover all the subjects (e.g., formation of estates, doctrines, and even the dreaded Rule Against Perpetuities). The concepts are made clear and the answers are concise. I highly recommend these cards.

We had two quizzes on future interests in my Property class. The first one was a "practice" quiz, and was held 3 weeks before the actual quiz. My score on the practice quiz was a pathetic 41% (7 out of 17). Needless to say, I was none too pleased with this score, so I sought out study aids to help me improve. I had some of the "Law in a Flash" sets for other classes, and had been happy with them, so I was excited to see they offered flashcards for the topic of future interests.

By the time I ordered them, and they arrived at my house, there was less than 1 week until the "real" quiz. I worked with the cards each day up until quiz day, and not surprisingly, I was very confident during the quiz. There were 35 questions total, and I only missed ONE for a score of 97%!

Each individual type of future interest, conceptually, is not very difficult to understand. However, it is very easy to get them mixed up in the more complicated, detailed scenarios/fact patterns. This product was invaluable in my mastery of future interests. To me, future interest "problems" are similar to mathematical problems. The more practice you have with a particular type of problem, the more automatic that type of calculation becomes.

My Property book has a few problems listed in the "Notes" section; however, they are few in number, and there are (of course) no answers! This product, however, contains numerous cards (organized by type) for each of future interest. The cards contain varying levels of difficulty, ranging from simple to complicated. The explanation on the back of each card is very detailed, and easy to understand. Many of them not only contain the answer, but also have what the answer(s) would be if various facts in the question were altered.

If you are struggling with future interests, or if you just want to further your grasp on the various concepts, you definitely need to order these cards. They made all the difference for me, and I highly recommend them!

A Courageous And Compelling Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-29
Legal scholar, and now Federal Appeals Court Judge, Neil Gorsuch has written a comprehensive study of the legal and moral issues in the physician assisted suicide debate. This is the right book at the right time because the practical consequences of mindless "reform" have been largely ignored in the current discussions. The author's detailed descriptions of what has actually happened in Oregon and in the Netherlands which have legalized assisted suicide are especially helpful. The author also presents medical evidence from respected sources including the Journal of Clinical Oncology showing that the major motivation behind physician assisted suicide is not unbearable pain but clinical depression.

Generally those favoring physician assisted suicide are on the most liberal side of the American political spectrum. But Gorsuch convincing argues that the intellectual roots of their proposals are actually from Social Darwinism, the American eugenics movement, and the National Socialist Party of Germany of the 1930's. Adolph Hitler is directly quoted on page 36. What is publicly presented as a civil right involving "personal autonomy" would in practice present a serious threat to the safety of the most vulnerable members of society. Gorsuch quotes with obvious approval the 1994 British House of Lords study which argued that it would not be logically possible to frame sufficient safeguards to guarantee that all "voluntary" suicides would in fact actually be voluntary.

A "reform" which completely rejects the traditions of Western Civilization and makes homicide legal is not one which should be adopted without consideration of all the facts. Our author calls the debaters away from the realm of theory, speculation, and one liners--and back to the real world.

Erudite, but Accessible, Legal Analysis
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-01
Gorsuch, who has a law degree from Harvard and a doctorate in legal philosophy from Oxford, has written an erudite scholarly work that has the advantage of being accessible to a broad educated public. He argues that human life has intrinsic value and effectively dismantles arguments for the legalization of assisted suicide and euthanasia. His analysis is completely rational and secular, not relying on any religious argumentation. He provides cogent analyses of the major legal cases in the US and Britain relating to assisted suicide and euthanasia. This is a must read for anyone interested in this issue. No matter what your position in this debate, you will need to understand and engage his arguments.

If you are a cop in Southern California, and you are working gangs, then you need this book. I take that back, if you are a gang cop period, you need this book. It contains information that you can use in the field tonight, and tomorrow night. No BS in this book. Great use of the law and enforcement techniques, I wish these guys had a class.

Fascinating Look at Gangs and Gang Enforcement

Review Date: 2006-06-07
Fascinating look at the gang subculture and the means law enforcement people use to supress their criminal activity and protect the public. I was expecting a somewhat dry, clinical and technical treatment of the subject. Instead I found the book, well written, engaging and interesting. This is probably because the authors have years of proven real experience in gang enforcement, in a community noted for it's gang activity, and their writing style conveys the sense that they know what they are talking about. If I have any criticism of the book it would be that it is too short, particularly the material on gang culture and history.

From the father of Positivism, this book explores the true nature of the norm and the role it plays in relation to state and society. Excellent analysis of positivist normativity.

You should also consider reading The Pure Theory of Law, by Kelsen, as well as books by Rawls, Nozick, MacIntyre, and Posner.

This book rediscovers the most important elements of Law, provinding Neo-Kantian theory aplied to Law and State. Altough, it is one of the most important law books written in the 20th Century, one must prior have read "The Pure Theory of law" in order to come about to a thorough understanding of this manificent pice of art. It has been heavilly criticized by those who follow "The Naturist Theory" and mostly by dogmatic waves, including the Catholic Church, for it proves that relativism refers to Democracy and Republic, and dogmaticism referes to Dictatorship.
