Employees' most valuable and complete guide: workplace laws
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-10
Even after working in Corporate America for several years as a manager, it wasn't until I started my own business that I started paying attention to employment laws. And then I was amazed at how little attention I had paid to my rights in the workplace when I was an employee! I now realize that I didn't know anything about my privacy rights, or when I was being illegally discriminated against or what to do if I got fired. Part of the reason was that I had been lucky enough to work for good employers (and especially great bosses) who were very fair and I never felt the need to understand my rights because they took care of protecting them proactively through their internal guidelines and implementation.

I realize now that everyone isn't as lucky when I started hearing the horror stories that some of my friends had to endure. If I had continued working for Corporate America (I started my own small business a few years back) I believe that eventually I would have encountered situations where I would need to know my workplace rights.

That's where this book comes in. It gives a fantastic overview of almost every law imaginable that could apply to you if you are an employee. It is a very detailed book with countless pages spent on comparing the laws as enforced in various states so you can find your own state law and see the details. A good example is the chapter on wages - there are tables comparing the rules for overtime, meal breaks, minimum wages, etc. for each state. In this chapter, I also found an interesting tidbit of information on meal and break periods. It describes the different situations under which your employer is required to pay for meal time!

The entire book is full of helpful and valuable information on your workplace rights. I personally believe that it is good to have this book handy even if you don't need it right now. It makes for interesting reading and you will feel more in control of your behavior at work and not as afraid of your lawful actions. Here's something else to think about - the book has information on the time period in which you can lodge a complaint against your employer after something unlawful has happened to you. Even if you decide not to do anything about something that has happened to you, at least you know the expiration date on your right to complain under the various circumstances!

This book also happens to be one of the more inexpensive books from Nolo. If you are new to Nolo books, you will quickly realize that they do a fantastic job of explaining the law in plain English. And they are very detailed. Enjoy!

Had it not been for this book, I would have been cheated...

I'm a paralegal, you would think I would know these things. However, I was in a position where I knew I was being wronged, but would have to research and learn an entirely new form of law to make my case. This book had already done that for me. It has simple answers to complex questions; it is organized into a format which allows the reader to make educated decisions. I highly recommend this book whether you are in a situation now, or want to be prepared should you ever find yourself in a situation later.

A great basic primer on the United States Constitution
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-23
I bought this book in high school school in 1956 for a Problems in American Democracy course. I have used it in high school, college Constitutional Law courses, law school courses and the practice of law. It breaks the Constitution down almost word for word and restates it in easy, simple layman's terms. It tells you why the phrase is there, what the citizen gives up under it and what the citizen receives in benefits from it. It alows you to find and understand specific sections of the Constitution and how they apply to you. Every American should have and study this book. It is the best simple explination of this complex subject I have ever seen. The fact that it is out of print and not available, particularly to young students, is a sorry comment on our society.

I wish they'd Reprint this one.

I borrowed this book from the Library and love it so much I wanted to buy one to keep readily available. I hope somebody decides to reprint this one. I'd love a copy of my own. It breaks down the Constitution into bite sized pieces into something even I can understand.

As a young boy - nobody could believe the a family member of mine wrote this book. I used it in government class in Junior High and High School in the 1970's. This book should still be required reading by every student in the United States

Competitive Tax plan makes sense
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-12
This book is a pleasure to get through and does an excellent job assessing the current state of tax reform. His competitive tax plan makes quite a bit of sense too. Shifting a good portion of federal revenue to a VAT takes over 150 million individuals off the IRS rolls and simplifies the entire system. I worry that the implementation process would be too complicated to reap the benefits of the simpler system, and that this plan lacks the proper advocates in Congress, but that does not mean you shouldn't read this book and understand his plan. The VAT is a tried and true system throughout the EU, and could help the US in numerous ways.

Tax Policy Made Interesting
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-18
Michael Graetz makes tax policy almost enjoyable. Graetz never forgets that the tax system's primary purpose is to raise the money needed to finance the government services that the nation wants in the least harmful way. Or, as the French economist Colbert put it, "The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest possible amount of feathers with the smallest possible amount of hissing." Graetz provides a realistic assessment of our current tax structure and deftly identifies the failings of faddish proposals, such as the "fair tax" and the "flat tax." His proposal to reduce the number of people required to pay income tax and to add a value-added tax to our nation's fiscal arsenal deserves serious consideration by conservatives and liberals alike.

An Excellent Crimes Against Humanity Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-06
This is an excellent, short alternative to bigger and more well-known textbooks on crimes against humanity. It's very scholary, well-researched, and offers the case study of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. It addresses many theoretical as well as practical issues of international law. It lists (p. 77) crimes against humanity as murder, extermination, enslavement, forced labor, deportation and unjustified or cruel forced population transfers, imprisonment, torture, rape and other forms of sexual abuse, inhumane acts constituting severe attacks on the human person, persecution that denies basic human rights, certain severe deprivations of property, and disappearances without proof of murder. Without being overly legalistic, the book goes into how to investigate and prosecute such crimes which would be very useful for those seeking greater "accountability" in the world today.

Required Reading for Bush Apologists
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-14
You won't find many of the usual right wing nut jobs reviewing this book, because it is very hard to libel documentary evidence. In law, we say "res ipsa loquitor," or "the thing speaks for itself." And this book has delivered the goods: documentary evidence in spades. If you don't come away from this book convinced that at the very least there is a prima facie case for indicting the US military high command, up to and including the shrub and Darth Cheney, on charges of aggravated war crimes and crimes against humanity, then you just haven't paid attention, or, worse, you are part of that portion of humanity--Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pinochet, Pol Pot, etc.--that thinks there is nothing wrong with torture and that, in fact, we should use it more. If that is the case, you will find plenty to warm your heart here.

Very Informative
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-29
This book is a great collection of the records of the Bush administration's torture policy. Seeing as it is a collection of documents obtained through FOIA some of it is redacted. This redaction lends the book that air of "what are they trying to cover up." This book would be great for research.

The introduction sets it all out in a nice brief synopsis. Thus, this book has little author influence as to opinion. It allows you to see for yourself.

A tale of deceit.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-21
Can we trust our courts to apply the law to the facts in controversial cases involving race and to rule on the law, putting persnal feelings and political agendas aside? Mr. Walkowski says such innocent trust is misplaced, and in this, his latest book on how our courts work, tells a tale of deceit, manipulation, congressional betrayal and corruption of judicial intellect on a scale that is unimaginable to the average American. Yet it is all true. Walkowski shows how the meaning of words had to be changed to make a case of discrimination where none existed. In clear, concise and devastating detail, the reader is given a glimpse how, in pursuit of diversity, the United States Supreme Court suspended the Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of equal protection under law in order to go about the business of racially balancing America's workforce. The price americans have paid for this judicial social engineering, Walkowski, says, has had the opposite effect of what was intended. Race relations have soured, not improved. Worse, blacks and Hispanics have been led to believe that preferential programs aimed at them are remedial, and that opposition to those efforts is fueled by bigotry. Affirmative Action/Affirmative Discrimination is not going to sit well with those who support managed diversity.

Excellent account of the dangers of managed diversity
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-17
Paul Walkowski has done it again. This time, in another outstanding book on how the federal courts fabricated discriination in employment cases back in the early 70's, and how those findings affect us today. I read his earlier work on the courts, "From Trial Court to the United States Supreme Court", and believe that Walkowski is the most precise critic of our courts in years. Walkowski, in 147-pages, gives us a clear, concise and devastating look at how the federal courts fabricated a case of racial discrimination in the Boston police and fire departments, and how the liberal Burger Supreme Court remained silent while the lower courts went about restructuring society to obtain judicial diversity. This book is an excellent account of the dangers of managed racial diversity, and should be required reading in political science and law classes. More than that, every American who is concerned about the way our courts became tools of the progressives in congress, and how those branches betrayed the promise of the Fourteenth Amendment, will find this fast reading book a primer on the corruption of thought that has swept our nation on this very important issue. I strongly recommend this book.

It would be wonderful if every citizen had the opportunity to see that there is recourse to justice for those without funds to be able to bring a case to court by means of contingency fees. Herman does a wonderful job in making this clear to the ordinary reader. Herman is cool!
