I found this book very informative and easy to read, a concise and clearly written handbook on not only how to choose a lawyer, but also how to effectively comnunicate and work with your chosen attorney for maximum results. I reccommend it to anyone who finds themselves involved in "legal tanglings", and has little knowledge on how lawyers, courts and the law works.

I was so glad a friend suggested Iread this book because it totaly de-mystified the lawyer/client arrangement.I found the book well laid out, easy to use, practical, wtitten for the layperson and highly useful. The glossary and self -tests are are very appealing to those of us who need help entering into the world of attorny/client relationships.
I consider it required reading for anyone dealing with or about to deal with a lawyer.

I have the first edition of this book and, unlike other professors, he did not lecture verbatim from his own book. I appreciated this.

His lectures are dynamic, humorous and insightful. His books can give you a fine taste of his vast knowledge but don't adequately reflect his excellent teaching style.

Furthermore, his material applies directly to your career. No matter what career you choose. He makes certain that there are contemporary touchstones and references. I went directly from his upper level classes into a career in PR and Marketing Communications with confidence that I would never encounter issues similar to his case studies. Wrong!

The funny thing about his writings and lectures is that they trigger epiphanies over a period of years.

I made only average grades in his classes (they are VERY difficult and I admittedly didn't always apply myself) but I am able to quote key legal cases, recall ethics case-studies and comprehend media principles that most people with years in the MarCom/PR field can't even grasp.

If you get a chance, buy any of his publications. If you feel bold and really seek some enlightenment on Media Ethics and Law issues, you should call Oklahoma Christian University and request any of his lecture videos.

If you are reading this Dr. P, I'm still waiting on your book on Media Law. I liked ethics but your media law courses rocked!

I have gone on to become an Information Technology engineer and yet still find myself applying knowledge gained from his courses. (Such as Intellectual Property law, copyrights, libel and fair use.)

In case you folks think I'm a shill, it should be noted that I haven't been in contact with Dr. Patterson since around 1991 and I'm fairly certain I was among his least-promising students, so we had no casual relationship.

Regardless of this, I credit his classes and books as the major force for saving my professional and, to some extent, my personal life, from self-destruction.

Most books on ethics and laws are boring. And those that aren't boring usually lean towards not giving any practical information. This book, however, is different.

Each chapter has information to explain a specific ethical question, then a real-life example of how that question might come about, then more questions to stimulate responses. I had the honor of being in a Media Ethics class taught by the author, and our discussions were always A) in depth B) heated C) helpful.

If you are considering becoming a journalist, photographer, tv personality or any other sower of information, read this book. It will help you to formulate your opinions now, instead of being stuck in an ethical no-win situation later.

Read it.

This dictionary is a great start for studying and learning legal translation or interpretation in Spanish and English. Sure, it is not comprehensive, but that is because it is compact enough to carry anywhere you go. For its size and price, you couldn't find a better dictionary. I have seen books for times this size that don't have as good information as this one.

I had planned on buying "Black's Law Dictionary", but the review of this dictionary made me think twice. I did a comparison of some key words and phrases between these two and several others. This one was the winner.

The price was not an object, but it sure is nice to pocket the extra money. This dictionary had similar definitions, but slightly more readable. What was the tipping point were the additional description of how they are used -- not just the definition, but was it means and some historical usages.

The extras at the back are nice. They will probably be more useful than I had suspected, especially the summaries of important Supreme Court cases.

I keep this legal dictionary at my right hand on my desk and refer to it almost daily. It is a perferct legal dictionary for non-lawyers.

I'm not a lawyer, but have been involved with litigation as a plaintiff and am training as an expert witness. Sometimes it's helpful to know what "voir dire" and "subpoena duces tecum" mean. Even for somebody who's studied Latin and French, lawyers sometimes pronounce things differently than you'd expect - and this dictionary has helped.

I also appreciate having a copy of the constitution in the back, as well as a guide to the judicial system. Included is a bare-bones outline of criminal and civil procedure which will be helpful for the layperson. The appendix also has lists of important cases and important laws (can you remember Marbury vs. Madison from high school civics?).

I know that Black's Law Dictionary, Eighth Edition (Black's Law Dictionary (Standard Edition)) is the standard, but you can't beat this dictionary for its price, size, and coverage.

I am a medical librarian. Although this is not my area of expertise, I thought the book contained some good explanations and warnings. I did make a correction that I wish to share with other readers in case someone might choose to use Harold Klawans' otherwise excellent description of what is considered medical literature, which is quoted in chapter 8. "Index Medicus" is put together by the National Library of Medicine, not the Library of Congress.

I found this book to be highly readable, well indexed, and a valuable source for report writing and preparing court testimony. The research cited is current, validity and clinical scales well defined, and sources of bias clearly stated. In addition, ethical considerations and pitfalls of reliance on this testing instrument are provided. Excellent comparisons of the MMPI and MMPI-2 including modified, deleted, and new items. Extremely valuable for any psychologist going to court and explaining to a judge or jury to results and interpretations of this instrument.

This is the single most useful psych resource I've ever used, and I have a pretty extensive library. The explanations of some of the internal features of the MMPI-II were impressive and helpful even to a Ph.D. psychologist with 30 years' clinical experience! Unless you have a graduate degree in psychology, this book is your best bet for mounting an effective challenge to bad, sloppy, or harmful psychological testing.

I was subjected to the MMPI and it's interpretations while attempting to maintain equal parenting time of my son. After my attorney ignored repeated requests for the results, I fired him, and have since represented myself.

Knowledge is Power. This book provides a "survey course" that will help pro per litigants. After reading it, I knew more about the MMPI than my lawyer.

In a court of law, you should be able to ask the forensic psychologist, "Sir, was the MMPI designed to evaluate parental ability"? Of course, the answer is, "No". But in family court, Rules of Evidence do not apply. If you memorize this book, you will be able to take apart any forensic psychologist.

This book provides useful information and tips for young practicing attorneys and should be viewed as an essential component of every lawyer's library. It clearly illustrates proven, time-tested methods for dealing effectively with criminal law processes. It includes helpful forms designed to save time and eliminate the need to "reinvent the wheel." NOT GUILTY EVERY TIME is a must read for new attorneys. Attorney Hagan takes the reader on a virtual tour of the criminal justice process from initial arrest to final sentencing and appeal. The twelve cases range from sexual abuse to murder to drug trafficking. Hagan seems to rarely lose a case in court and it is because of his meticulous preparation, organization, and having a strategy for each and every case his office takes to jury trial. He gives 7 keys to victory every time and they are the 7 that each lawyer should focus on. Nothing succeeds like success and Hagan has become a master trial planner and strategist. You can call him a "tiger" in the courtroom

The authors give a full account of this historical trial. I had no background knowledge of the Nuremberg Trial, and I found this book easy to read as well as complete and detailed enough. I would complement it with Nuremberg's Diary, by Gilbert, to get a deeper insight of the defendants personalities. Although I can't compare this book with the others available on the subject, I would certainly recommend it as an excellent choice.

I first became familiar with the Tusas' study in 1985 while covering Argentina's "mini-Nuremberg" trial of the three military juntas that ruled in Buenos Aires from 1976 to 1982 for Newsweek and the Washington Post.

It is a wonderfully written, comprehensive study, really the best I have read on the subject either before or after. I recommend it without hesitation for all those interested in the trial itself, its effects on international law, or anyone who is just trying to make sense out of the murky period in which we now live.

Good book if you're a lawyer

Review Date: 2003-11-04
This book is well written and informative. If your goal is to know about the Nuremberg Trial, or if you're a lawyer studying issues that arise in conducting international tribunals, you'll enjoy this book and it'll be five stars for you! If you're looking for an exciting book on WWII or the aftermath of that war, you'll probably be a bit bored with portions of this book and at best think it's worth three stars.

Best parts of the book deal with the opening and closing statements at the trial, testimony and cross examination of Goering, Speer, etc, the deliberations of the judges, the verdict and subesquent executions, including the mystery of how Goering got the cyanide the night he was to be hanged in order to commit suicide.

What might bore you if you're not a lawyer is the international law stuff, so I'll give the book four stars.

Excellent look at the Nuremberg Trial
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-31
This book must be the best account of the Nuremberg trial out there. OK, I'll admit I haven't read all the other accounts, but this one gives all the information any interested person needs to know about the trial without getting mired in needless detail. Plus it's written in narrative style and the Tusa's personal observations are side splittingly funny at times (Hard to imagine for such a serious topic, but they do it)

The book begins before the actual trial and details the discussions that the four powers had about the trial - what the scope of it would be, which countries would be represented, what the charges would be, who would fund it etc... The actual pre-trial preparation was such a mammoth task and this book helps the reader appreciate the difficulties facing the judges, lawyers and administrative staff.

After this introduction, we get a view of the prosecution and defence teams and the judges. The Tusas have done an excellent job by bringing us behind the scenes of the actual trail and getting us up close and personal with the 'stars' at the trial. They help us understand where the judges are coming from and how the different systems make it difficult for them to agree on certain aspects of the trial - very accessible to those who aren't lawyers.

What is the more interesting part of this book is the character studies of the various defendants. The Tusas have succeeded in making these men come alive. I was reminded of the movie Nuremburg with Alec Baldwin when I read the description of Goering and Speer. (Incidentally that would be an excellent movie to watch after reading this book.). The cases against these men are explained both from the prosecution and the defence side. Heavy sarcasm lightens the mood especially when some of the heinous crimes are described; it is amazing the blatant lies that some of these 'leaders' told when faced with their crimes.

There is a short section on the case against Organizations; the SS, SA, Gestapo etc... which is followed by the verdicts and the executions. I think that this book is fairly unbiased and factual (there are references at the end of each chapter and it's from the BBC J ) I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the second world war and especially the part that the Germans played in it.

Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to provide techniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume is arranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part of every negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important points about this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faced daily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignored in many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement at Ruby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisis intervention.

And I fear it will become more needed as the courts and the police chip away at our Constitutional rights. The best parts of the book were the sections that explained how to be inconspicuous, and how to maintain privacy with documents and other property you would rather not have the police see.

My comments should not be construed to be pro-crime, nor should the book be considered as such. It should be read as a primer on how to maintain the rights we have while the "justice" system erodes those rights and attempts to use the system against even the innocent.

This is an important book that should definitely be updated, since it was published in 1988.

An Average Joes Guide to Understanding the Law

"E.X. Boozie" did for the law what Abbie Hoffman did for shoplifting. He taught people how to use the law to their advantage. I own this book, although I am delighted to see it is still available post 9-11, where our rights are being stripped away one by one. I consider this book a survival guide in this day and age. I know for a fact that many of the topics discussed in this book still in fact work. I was taking a constitutional law class, and really stirred up the teacher (a former cop) by pointing out the folly of his logic that cops were always right. On more than one occasion he had to back down and admit that in many of his theories that the cops not the citizens would in fact be in the wrong.

The book was written in 1988, the end mark of an 8 year Republican administration. I feel that history is repeating itself again. Poverty is on the rise, and the poor are always who gets blamed for wrong doing. Look around on many of the t.v. specials, or nightly news and see if this isn't eery: "Reports come pouring out of government agencies raising the hue and cry that crime is on the rise in America. News Paper headlines and the Six O'clock News broadcast graphic stories of murder and mayhem on the streets. Politicians pontificate about cleaning up crime and bringing back "the good old days." Movies and television programs dramatically portray innocent citizens being brutally assulted by grotesque-looking thugs. And who are the thugs that recieve all this bad press? You guessed it- it's the ghetto people."

Lest you think this book is meerley a rant, by a guy who's name "E.X. Boozie" doesn't sound credible, he actually has done the research. He lists the exact court cases, which are available on line, or on the books which discovered these loopholes. For example: "A series of landmark Supreme Cases has formalized a rule, that when police aquire evidence against a person by violating his constitutional protections, they shouldn't be allowed to use it to convict him." He backs this statement up, by correct court cases(Mapp v Ohio 1961, U.S. v Weeks 1914, and Elkins v U.S. 1960.) He also includes the correct case number.

This is a book to own for anyone who cares about their rights.

"E.X. Boozhie" has written what is probably the best book on understanding the law in the USA. Instead of writing on how the law is written and established, he writes on how it is practiced and enforced. He points out what to look for (and look OUT for) in various situations that can get you into trouble, and what to expect if you do. The author has seriously done his homework. Each chapter is followed by about 2 pages of footnotes; nearly all of them legal cases.

Boozhie has helpfully added a "10 Commandments" list on how to keep yourself OUT of trouble! ("Be aware of the rules." "Don't attract attention." "Trust only what you control.") Just the thing we need in a society where Big Brother's presence is all too obvious.

A worthy inclusion for the bookshelf of any freedom lover.

This book is a clearly written view of how the law works, from the POV of a convict. I don't know what Boozhie did to get sent up. His text is pretty pro-lawbreaker, but that's to be expected, and given the current tendency of the government to ignore the law and Constitution, not as grating as one might think.
