The Guide to Common Sense
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-08
The book is good guide for students in pharmacy or someone seeking to enter into the field but basically the book is a huge guide in common sense. Everything in the book is common sense and provides tons of examples for all the lessons taught in each of the chapters. And all the chapters are designed to complement what is previously taught on the earlier chapters.

Not A Good Idea
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-25
The information in this book is not at all practical in an actual pharmacy. The author seems to advise using extensive, drawn-out conversations that take far too much time to be used in real pharmacy settings. These ideas sound promising in theory but can not be applied in the real world. It seems as if his only experience may be in the confines of a university building and not with real patients. Do not waste money on this item.

Get A Real Review Book Instead
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead. If you spend more time with these than the question books, you'll be glad when you see the questions pop on on the actual exam!

Not suitable for PEBC preparation
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-21
As far as I know, there is no exam guide for PEBC and Canadian students have to use American guide books to prepare for PEBC. There are some good American books which contain a lot of information, this is definitely not one of them. Overall, the questions are too easy and too simple. The answers are often incomplete and there are many incorrect answers and questions. Actual PEBC questions are more complex and difficult and this guide book may only be useful in the beginning of preparation to see where you stand. I think Comprehensive Pharmacy Review and Appleton & Lange's Review of Pharmacy are much better books to study.

I found some discrepancies in the book, and that worried me of the accuracy of the book. I passed my test with an 85. I know it helped me prepare my mind for the type of questions asked. Especially since I hadn't taken a test in over 10 years.

Better material available

I am returning this book for several reasons. For one, there are questions about pharmacology and medical calculations that have nothing to do with pharmacy law. Secondly, it has the appearance of being copyrighted in the 60's (electric typewriter font). Third, it's only test questions.

I recommend the book Guide to Federal Pharmacy Law, by Barry Reiss. You'll get your test questions but also reference materials to actually read and study.

Narrow in scope , poor combination of behavior and the brain , virtually no Neurophysiology and behavior - the most relevant and expanding area in ALL of Neurology Psychiatry integration. Same old hard wiring book written 50 years ago. Looking for amazing advances in brain/ physiology and behavior money Poorly spent.

nurse practitioner drug handbook
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-11
So far, I have looked up about 6 drugs and a handful of diseases - none of them appeared in the book. I am very disappointed, and have put the book aside for reference at home. Again, when I pick it up at home it often doesn't have the drug I'm looking for. I would not bring it to work because I cannot afford to not be able to find the information I need at work. At work I use Tarascon, where drugs are divided neatly into classes, and Nursing 2000 drug handbook for Pt. teaching needs.

Excellent clinical reference for those in family practice!

Great book that allows the ARNP to prescribe medications with confidence. More advanced than nursing drug books and very helpful for anyone in family practice. Includes information that I find helpful in dealing with a pediatric population. Also addresses new drugs not frequently covered in ordinary drug books currently available. I plan to upgrade with any new additions.

Long on drug acquisition, short as a medical material
Helpful Votes: 36 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-28
The author spends a lot of time telling you how to obtain drugs normally available only through doctors (and ranting about government control) while not spending a lot of time on the medical aspects that the title leads you to believe.

I suppose that his suggestions about forging prescriptions shouldn't be surprising when his other books tell readers how to gunrun for profit, acquire new id, build claymore mines, etc.

Just Downright Dangerous
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-04

A listing of the errors and inaccuracies in this book would fill a small paperback in itself. If a person hasn't been trained in the basics of emergency medical science, some of the procedures advocated in this book could prove lethal to a patient if performed by an amateur. The book can best be characterized this way: even the author's method for forging prescriptions is obsolete.

If you're looking for a felony conviction, this is your book. If you're interested in sound do-it-yourself emergency healthcare procedures, try one of the books recommended by the other medical professionals who reviewed this one.

Full of half-truths and lies

Review Date: 1999-04-14
I don't recommend this book. As with most books by survial author "Ragnar Benson" it is full of innaccuracies and half truths. There is some basic information on setting bones, stitching wounds, and other simple topics, but it is not very well addressed -- It's almost as if the author has no idea what he's talking about and is simply repeating urban knowledge thirdhand. As far as his information of how to aquire the various supplies, there are far better, easier, and more legal ways than he describes here. The misinformation presented here is likely to get you in trouble. "DITCH MEDICINE" is a far better book.

Our faculty preference is the ratio and proportion method. We prefer a text that presents only one method thoroughly. This text is the best I've seen for simplicity of design and ease of understanding. We've used it for 4 semesters and our students like it very much

I agree with Oreste's review regarding the Brown/Mulholland text. Parts are quite good introductory material, but unfortunately other portions are misleading (read WRONG). See, for an example, the calculations explained and illustrated in Chapter 8, Parenteral Nutrition.

Confusing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-09
I believe that the information presented in this book is confusing. I have found an alternate way to do the same calculations which is less confusing in my opinion. It would be nice if there were a couple of different methods shown and people could choose whichever method works best for them. Many of my classmates are struggling with the same confusion. Once I show them the way I calculate the same problems, they usually comment on how much easier my way is and wonder why the book makes something that can be so easy, so difficult.

BEWARE: Book contains mistakes!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-01
Overall, this book is not too bad, yet it contains many mistakes in its practice section and that is uncalled for in the medical world and why I give it only one star. Also, I think that they make things a bit more confusing than is necessary. Best thing to do is find something else. Lorrie Hegstad's Essential Drug Dosage Calculation is one of my favorites, it does not have as many exercises as other books, but is good at explaining the basics.

Ref for experienced RPhs & not students or consumers

I owned the last few editions of this book and find that the drug use in special populations to be the most useful. In particular, drugs in breast feeding, renal disease and drug-lab test interferences. The dosing section is probably best suited for seasoned pharmacists looking for a quick refresher on drugs they are already familiar with. Dr. Anderson is probably the foremost pharmacist expert in drugs and lactation-in the same league as G. Briggs. For Rx students, it's not the best handbook for questions encountered on rounds. This book is for the experienced RPh. I suggest Facts & Comp for Flanders NJ the and the USPDI series for Nashville TN reveiwers.

I was greatly disappointed in this text. Its style is pedantic and difficult to manage without great effort. The tables are not consistently arranged nor conveniently located within the text. Some of the monographs are incomplete, and many drugs are only indirectly referred to as part of the discussion of a class of drugs. Patients do not take `classes' of drugs. Worst of all however was the discussion of medical emergencies. Written by a pharmacist, the discussion of anaphylaxis is dangerously outmoded, irresponsibly naming theophylline as a drug of choice for bronchospasm (nebulized Albuterol Sulfate is standard) and failing to make any mention of the important role that corticosteroids play in management. Shame on you!

They just can't get it right!

This is the ninth edition and they can't get it right. Unfortunately, it was given to me as a gift otherwise I would return it. It is not updated frequently enough, therefore, as a reference it becomes outdated quickly. It is missing quite a few drugs approved in 1999 and early 2000. Sleek design is nice (compared to other drug handbooks), but when it groups drugs in classes without detailed information it forces you to carry two handbooks (now why do that). It would be nice to have more comparison charts-they are helpful. Maybe the tenth edition (in 2001???) will be better.

Buy another study guide

Review Date: 2002-11-18
I bought this book the week before my test, to get in a little bit more practice. There is really only one test in the book, that covers all five areas of the test. The questions in this book were not in the same format as the actual PCAT test. Some of the questions were bizarre, too. There was a lot of information on pharmacy careers, but you can get that on the AACP web site. Save your money and get another book.

Terrible!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-17
The questions here were significantly EASIER than the ones I encountered when I took the January2003 PCAT. The Reading Section was especially terrible-- the questions on the actual test involved more thinking than finding your answers word for word in your passages (as this book misleads you to think). Also, there were only vague explanations to the questions/ concepts they tested you for in this book. Use your old SAT books or use MCAT books. Even though the Barron's book is almost as bad, if you must buy one, buy the Barron's PCAT study guide.

What you don't know

Review Date: 2002-08-09
I believe that this book provides you information on what you do not know. By taking the practice test, you can pinpoint the subject areas in which you are lacking. However, if you want a book that will help you review material on these subject areas, you will need another book (or two). The practice exam was helpful though. However, I stil have not taken the PCAT so I can't tell you how helpful it is.

Review Date: 2002-07-29
The first half of this book is helpful and explains different pharmacy programs, careers, etc. It also gives a list of schools with contact info. HOWEVER, the cover is very misleading. This book has only ONE practice exam (One for each of the 5 sections). There is NO REVIEW SECTION for any part of the PCAT. The exam is the same exam as in ARCO (4th ed.) PCAT review book. Infact I can't find a difference between the two.

ok, this book is not all that great compared to others, like barons'(yeah, that one's good).
Some of the answers are wrong so it can confuse you-the studier.
ok, some questions did help, but the ones with incorrect answers kept me frustrated, and this frustration clouded my mind and intervened with my thought process and studying.

if you can, find another book to buy, unless you're loaded.

I took this test earlier today (10/25/2003) and found this book to be useful for preparing in the Verbal, Quantitative and Chemistry sections. The Reading Comprehension was significantly more difficult than the passages/questions given in this book. Many questions on the actual exam were "What did the author infer from "...." in the passage". Also, on the actual exam, be very careful with your time management in the Quantitative section since there are 65 questions in about 30 minutes. The Biology was not all Anatomy and Physiology questions that the practice test in this book had. That section is not represented very well for the actual PCAT. Overall, this book is good but should be supplemented with other books for practicing test questions.

Obviously written by those unfamiliar with the PCAT.

This is a horrid book. The questions are nothing like those on the PCAT. I was very disapointed. Avoid this book at all costs.
