diverse roles for computing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-16
The papers in this book summarise the ways in which computers are used these days in pharmaceutical research. If nothing else, the sheer accrued volume of published research necessitates sophisticated information analysis. So some sections deal with what you might call the library science issues.

But the book goes much further. A new field of bioinformatics has emerged, and some chapters of the book attempt to explain it. Sitting at the intersection of computing, biology and chemistry. Specifically within biology, it deals with genomics and cell biology. A key idea is the making available of large databases, for efforts like predicting the 3 dimensional structure of a molecule. And for finding targets for theraputic intervention. How to describe this data in a way useful to others to avail themselves of it? The text shows progress along this front.

Some parts of the book are really just describing the state of the art of crystallography. Where the challenges are in finding or predicting the structures of large biologically significant molecules.

A Nice Introductory Book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-03
Let's me first say, my background is physical chemistry and analytical chemistry, so I have a limited knowledge on pharmacokinetics. I purchased this textbook because I have the options to take an online 15 weeks class along this book with University of Georgia and to take an online test from ASHP after completion of this book. I did the latter. The book is actually short. Although the book is designed to be a textbook for a 15-weeks online course, I was able to read through it within 3 weeks, passed the ASHP test while holding a full time job. I admit that I often spent 2 hour a day reading the book and many people may not able to afford. That being said, I am certain that most people can finish this book within 15 weeks at a very relax pace. I find the book very easy to understand and enjoyable to read. The math requirement for this book is on the algebra level, although a basic calculus level is needed to fully appreciate the theories and the math. The book has some typos, especially during the "Exercises and Problems" sections. In addition, it is more expensive than other pharmacokinetics books on the market.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to pharmacokinetics and want a short, enjoyable introductory book.

The Constituents of Medicinal Plants: An Introduction to the Chemistry & Therapeutics of Herbal Medicines

Excellent but terse

This book is an excellent introduction to the major classes of phytochemicals involved in the medicinal effects of plants. It is, however, very terse. Without some background in inorganic and organic chemistry, I doubt it would be very usable. More detail on the typical effects the different classes of phytochemicals would make it an even more useful book. Still, assuming you have some chemistry background, a very good introduction to the subject, particularly if combined with a text like The Natural History of Medicinal Plants, which fleshes out other basic issues.

A very complete & concise guide to every known medicinal.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-19
This is an excellent & complete reference to every medicinal product from Dristan Nasal Spray to marijuana to Zyrtec. It includes uses, abuses, side effects, interactions, FDA warnings and results of scientific research (if available) for every known drug. It is in dictionary format with references and cross references for scientific, generic and common names of each medicine. All of the pharmacological terms are also referenced. The book uses readily understandable descriptions without being oversimplified. There are not specific dosage recommendations and there are no illustrations, but otherwise this book has everything. I recommend it for health care professionals as well as consumers and give it 4 and 1/2 stars.

A fasinating book that, unfortunately, needs to be updated, however, the statistics are startling. An excellent basis for the belief of a conspiracy against the food suppliment industry.A must read for those who are looking for a quick fix, or have family or friends that pop a pill for everything that ails them. A wonderful inside look at the bedroom relationship between drug manufacturers and the government.

diverse topics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-11
The book is a collection of research chapters on various aspects of protein pharmaceuticals, contributed by authors who are at firms in this industry. The topics are broad.

One topic is how to thermally sterilise the manufacturing. There's some elementary thermodynamics and kinetics covered here, that centres on killing off microbes. A key idea is that sterility is not an absolute, binary concept, but is modelled by a probability distribution. A pragmatic recognition that absolute assurance is often unnecessary and too expensive.

Typically, the chapters contain a mixture of basic chemistry and biology, along with engineering issues and diagrams that are needed in a production environment.

Excellent book on the topic of Documentation .

Review Date: 1999-02-07
This book lives up to its billing. It is quite clear and simple and well constructed. It is an easy read, with larger font print and ample use of white space. It "walks the talk" so to speak. Very up-to-date and even addresses state-of-the-art documentaion techniques along with the difficult security issues that such techniques provide in a decentralized envrionment. Chock full of gems about documentation that I hadn't even thought of! And I have been in the business longer than the author!! Good work, James!

collection of papers covering methods to find the right dose
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-14
In phase 2 of the drug development process after a drug has shown to satisfy proof of concept on efficacy a clinical trial is generally run with subjects randomized to a placebo or one of several dose of the drug. This is done to find the dose that is most effective but still safe for use. This book covers the various methods for accomplishing this task. The goal is often to find what is called the maximally tolerated dose (MTD, highest dose meeting safety requirements). Two of the chapters are devoted to the challenging problem of doing this for oncology trials. Methods for determining sample size requirements and the need for PK/PD studies are all considered in this book.
