This is the cheaper alternative to paying for the class. My score increased by 15 points. It is much better than Barron's prep book because the book is divided in to chapters and lessons - not just pretests.

This seems to be a very good review for the PCAT. However, I have not yet taken the PCAT so I still have to see how well it prepared me for it. The only beef I have with this edition is that it does not contain info on the changes in the test. They refer you to a website to cover the new material. Also the book contains info that isn't on the test anymore. I think they should have redone the book and included the new material and got rid of the old.

I haven't yet taken the pcat. But my friends are recommending this book to prepare for it. I have already read more than half of the book and they did explained knowledges that I need to prepare for pcat very clearly. It was good starting from the beginning up to the Bios section. I did not regret getthing this book. However, I found this book have many typos and stupid major mistakes onces I got to the Chem section. (ex. in the organic chapter, carbon suppose to have no more than 4 bonds, but they showed a carbon with 3 single bonds and one double bonds. Then they asked a question "what is the hybridization of the carbon atom labeled", which they labedled the H atom instead. This book could be way better if they correct all these stupid mistakes.

This book is absolutely rife with grammatical and spelling errors. If poor editing (or, more likely in this case, NO editing) bothers you, do NOT buy this book, as you will be too distracted by the numerous errors to concentrate on the content. Here are some of the more blatant examples from chapter 70: Paraneoplastic's Disorders; Endocrine's Disorders; Neurologic's Disorders; Hematologic's Disorders; Dermatologic's Disorders. Please, people -- it's called spell check, or use your half of a brain and hire a real editor.

Blueprints series is overall pretty good. The Medicine book is a quick read that will give the reader a sufficient amount of knowledge and detail regarding that subject matter, however I think that it is appropriate to supplement some of the chapters with Cecil's to get a full understanding of the material. Overall, I recommend this book because it is a quick read and it isnt in the "bullet" style format that many of the books are- but rather in a flowing paragraph form.

I have just finished my internal medicine rotation and found this book quite useful to study from. It is easy to find relevant material and it had everything but the very most recent research, which you won't get in any book anyway. Overall, I use it and plan on using it as a reference when needing to go over internal medicine again. P.S. I also find Harrisons necessary, and the washington manual of course.

First I have to say the Blueprints Medicine book is probably the best review book I've ever read. It does not replace the Washington Manual or UPTODATE, but its very helpful to have with you. While it's a bit larger than the UCV or BRS style books, I feel it is worth it. With each chapter averaging 6-15 pages it makes for a very flexible review schedule. If a student were to read it while on a medicine for 4-8 weeks it makes for a great nightly read. At the same time using it as a board review book is another option. Single chapters are easily digested with the help of numerous key point boxes and easy to read charts scattered throughout the chapters. Honestly, I found this book very enjoyable to read. The question section at the end of book nicely completes the package. While Cecil's is a nice reference book to keep on the shelf this book is a must to keep in your backpack and read on those 20 minute breaks on rotations.

I Passed my FPGEE with score of 103 with the help of this book. It was quite helpful and contains precise and useful information on almost all the relevant topics you need to study for the FPGEE. All you need is 3 months of study and this book to pass the FPGEE.

If we want to know about what food we put into our mouths, why not know what pills we consume ?

Undergraduate text

Review Date: 2006-10-30
This text is good for an advanced undergraduate course. It is a pretty good reference, with two major problems:

1) The book is a flimsy paperback. Other paperbacks I have can withstand usage just fine, but after 1 month the text was in two pieces. It feel apart at the binding. I never even brought it to class, it sat on the bookshelf and fell apart after twice a week readings.

2) The solutions are presented as references to journal articles. I am not too shy of searching for articles, but when you are in a crunch it would be nice to not have to search through 10 pages of tangential information to find the one data or conclusion you need in order to verify the accuracy of your work.

Besides for that, it worked just fine for my advanced undergrad course in physical organic chemistry. I did have to make frequent references to other sources for more in-depth information, but when study time came it worked better than the myriad organic texts available at my library.

I have been using this book since the first edition, in my postgraduation courses and each time, it is better. The 5th edition introduced aspects that we awere longing for, like, for example, new achievements in the area of aromaticity and improvements in the first chapter. The best improvement was attached to problems solving (despite being not so friendly) and 3D figures. A CD should be added to the next edition.

Dr. Carey serves up a smash hit!!

Review Date: 2008-03-01
Everyone in the world of organic chemistry knows of Dr. Carey and the great author and chemist he is. Hardly anyone could compare with the way he slides from subject to subject, explaining in detail and ease subjects that can be rather difficult to grasp. However, his method, because of his complete understanding of the subject matter is amazing. Often I wish I had had him for an instructor for at least one course in organic or any other for that matter. It is his ability to break down difficult concepts, and introduce them in logical and orderly fashion as to make that same difficult concept... much more easy to understand. If you are thinking about graduate school, or even want to make better grades in your soph-jr 2 semester organic chem class, use this book. It will help you understand some of the topics your "quick course" book leaves out! I cannot recommend this book high enough. guyairey

This was a great book to help study the federal law portion of the law test. I recently moved from AZ to IL and had to take the law test for IL. This book is very concise and clear, easy to understand. I love the tips and example boxes throughout the text, and the test questions at the end of each chapter & end of book are excellent. I only gave it 4 stars because there are a few blaring questions that are incorrect at the end of some of the chapters. The answers are given and you can quickly look at the chapter to verify why it is wrong. Most were correct. Needless to say, I would definitely use this again.

I've never been able to do well in pharmacology. These cards have made a significant differenct though! They use simple pictures and mneumonics to help remember the countless drugs, mechanisms and side effects. These are a necessity for any medical student.

Decent cards sub par mnemonics
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-04
The cards have useful information but I had picked this brand hoping the mnemonics would help me remember the drug names. For a vast majority of them it feels like the authors spent about 2 minutes coming up with a sentence with the drug name and function in it and a minute drawing a picture to go along with it. They are not funny, interesting, or unique and don't help in any way to remember the drug functions. From classes like Gross Anatomy I have learned all kinds of acronyms and phrases to help remember names and function and I am sure there are ways to do it with pharmacology if some effort was put in. Once again get these cards if you are looking for plain pharm cards but don't let the mnemonics influence your decision to pick these cards over another brand.

Review Date: 2008-05-06
I bought these cards on amazon after reading all the positive reviews but they fell far short of expectations. Overall I found the cards more distracting and taxing to memorize than my course notes. Most of the memorization tricks are really random and consist of paragraph stories with randomly bolded letters. For example: for the drugs tolbutamide and chlorpropamide the "memory sentence" is this: as a TOOL BOOK, this COLORed PRO PAM is IDEal for the closing of K atp channel.
Some of the cards even require you to learn NEW words ie: for amphotericin you have to learn that an amphora is a tall jar. Now granted, it is difficult to come up with pneumonics for every drug out there but
some drugs aren't represented at all ie: hypothalamic/pituitary drugs, dermatology.
I did find some cartoons so odd that I actually remember a couple on the day of exam. But when all the cards are that random, it defeats the purpose. That said, there's no easy way to learn pharm and it is less time consuming than making your own cards. I actually have no other flashcard sets to compare these to, so sadly, these MAY be the best out there. But if I were to memorize something, I'd spend less time memorizing cartoons along with the stories behind them and spend more time actually learning the mechanisms...at least THEN you'll save some time when you get to biochem.

Recommended for those curious about Pharmacy Practice

In my experience this was a great book that I was sad to have lost. It is a great book to quickly familiarize oneself with pharmacy practice. As far as using it to pass the PTCB?...If you work in a pharmacy for any significant length of time, you can pass the PTCB.(Note: Passing the PTCB doen't mean you're a good technician) This book offers a great intro to the background information that will help you quickly adapt and excel at your job.
I bought this book when I first started working in a retail pharmacy. I used this book as a self-study, learning to read prescriptions and basic pharmacy practice expectations.
It covers quite a bit of information, not all of which is entirely useful depending on your desired pharmacy practice setting.
Still, I would recommend this book if you're looking to quickly familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of pharmacy practice. It's overview of different physiological systems is basic and suits the purpose of introducing drug classes.
If it is of any import, I am now in a Doctor of Pharmacy program, I've been in several pharmacy practice settings and I can say that if an individual actively utilized this book they would have more than enough background knowledge to (on-the-job training aside) be pharmacy literate.
I too noticed math errors in the book. However, it does provide a good idea of what types of math one needs to utilize as a pharmacy technician. With regard to the PTCB test's math section?...I'd skip books altogether on that and get comfortable with dimensional analysis (setting up the math problem so when you multiply you cancel out all units except what you're looking for). The rest of the PTCB can be passed quite easily with knowledge accrued from this book and work experience.
In sum, I'd say, this book is a great intro to learning ABOUT your job. I couldn't recommend a book for "passing the PTCB", because as you may have gleened already, I think all you need to do that is learn FROM your job.

College Instructor Does NOT Recommend
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-12
I taught a certification review class at a local community college using this text and its companion exam review guide. The material is flawed, the two books often give differing information, and there is more information than is needed for an examination review. In my opinion, the texts were not proofread well. There are numerous misspellings, drugs placed in the wrong classes, and the answer keys to the review questions had mistakes in nearly every chapter. The review questions and accompanying CD-Rom are way too advanced and inapplicable to the national exam. The book was also very lean on the review of pharmaceutical calculations. Pharmacy math is a huge portion of the exam and I feel this book should have had more than three brief chapters. Upon first glance, this looks like a thorough textbook, but once you get into it, it is difficult to follow and inaccurate. It's difficult to teach a course (and probably take a course), when the instructor has to edit and revise the text as s/he goes along. I do not recommend this text at all, unless you enjoy researching every point the author makes, to determine what information is true, and what is false.

After hearing several positive things about Blueprints Psychiatry, I decided to go to the store and buy it. Didn't want to work too hard, didn't want to look like a total moron. Then I picked it up, and I think I've seen bulkier books written by another doctor (Seuss, that is). But brevity isn't necessarily bad, so I checked it out at the library instead and read it in 3 days of semi-hard studying. Yeah... I think should've gone with the other book, Green Eggs and Ham.

The problem with Blueprints is that it largely rehashes DSM-IV guidelines. That's OK, and it's a big part of psych, but you can get that with the Current Clinical guidelines pocketbook. What I was really expecting/wanting was something that (1) had bits of annoying trivia pertinent to the exam (2) more information on psychoactive drugs (3) described in more detail patient presentations and (4) discussed how other medical diseases could present like psych disorders. Blueprints skims these issues.

I would buy First Aid for the Psych Clerkship instead. It's a quick read as well but provides more info. I had a good score on the psych shelf, and I think switching primary sources had a great deal to do with it. If you like the Blueprints series, just check it out or borrow it from a friend. Blueprints Q&A, though, is an excellent question resource.

I am glad this book was not too long, could you really stand to read much more about this topic. Anyways, I found this book to be ok. It covered most topics and hit the highlights. There were definitely details that showed up on the shelf exam however that were not included in this book. For some reason, the psychiatry shelf exam is one of the tougher ones. I used this book in combination with a little pocket book called "Psychiatry: Current Clinical Strategies." That little book filled in details that this blueprints book skipped. Using the combination of the two books was adequate for the rotation and to do well on the shelf exam.

This book is sufficient for USMLE step 2, but I used other sources for to study for the boards, such as First Aid, Boards and Wards, and Prescription for the Boards.

I am a junior level BSN nursing student and found this book to be very explanatory and easy to comprehend. The CD is also very helpful for practicing one and two step calculations. I highly recommend this book to other nursing students who are learning medication calculations!

This is indispensible for any nurses, vet techs, or aides. The emphasis on metric-standard conversions is very good. The exercises are excellent and should be completed to fully understand the concepts.

This book is a good book for those who want to learn drug dosage and do not have a strong background in Math. It has a comprehensive step-by-step review for the math that is needed to master the material. As someone whose weakness is math, I found the book to be an easy read and walked a way with a weath of knowledge...
