An unrealistic review for the NAPLEX
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-14
I cannot, in all honesty, recommend this book as a review for the NAPLEX. Having recently (7/04) passed the NAPLEX myself, I found this book to completely off base with the subject material and level of difficulty of the exam itself. Case studies within Pharm Prep place undue emphasis on clinical decision-making, relying heavily on treatment guidelines and evidence-based medicine. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this, however, much of this material (guidelines etc) is NOT tested on the NAPLEX because 1) the material can become easily dated and 2) it is beyond the scope of practice of most practicing pharmacists. Remember NAPLEX tests minimum competency.
This book may be a helpful in preparation for exams in pharmacy school but it is much more academic than practical.
Overall, I regret purchasing the book.

Comprehensive and easy to follow

Halfway through pharmacy school, I have purchased this book to give me an idea of my strengths and weaknesses as I prepare for the boards. I haven't taken boards yet, but I believe this will be very helpful. The format lends well to various study habits as you can work on as many or as few cases as you want at a time. The vignettes are based on actual cases, thus they are as realistic and sometimes as complex as we can expect to see in practice. Each case is presented with chief complaint, past medical history, social history, family history, review of symptoms, physical examination, laboratory and diagnostic tests, diagnosis, medication record, and pharmacists notes. The "extra" information is helpful for recalling key therapeutic indications/contraindications taught in class. It is also refreshing to see cases solely dedicated to OTC and herbal meds. The questions are clearly written and there is an explanation of each correct (or incorrect answer) in the back. My only suggestion for improvement would be to include a section of references to search for more detailed explanations to the answers.

I'm a pharmacy tech student and this text was provided as part of the course. The Instructor warned that there were several typo's and things... Five STRUGGLING chapters into it, it went into the trash and I replaced it with Pharmacy Calculations by Mike Johnston. Most of us learned about fractions, percents, etc. in grade school. How this author can take something that simple and complicate it to the point you're confused on doing simple math is beyond belief. Conversion factors on one page contradict conversion factors on another, yet you're supposed to use them to solve problems? The quizes at the end of each chapter only have answers to the even numbered problems? That may be the good news as a lot of answers are incorrect or typos. Pharmaceutical Calculations for Pharmacy Technicians: A Worktext

Excellent Book!

This book is a must have for all pharmacy technicians and a great tool for students studying to become a master at calculations. It is very clear, well organized, and covers all the necessary information. This book is easy to follow and understand. The fact that the pictures of labels are taken directly from manufacturers and the forms are taken directly from hospitals, it is a great tool in becoming a skillful pharmacy technician. The knowledge that I've gained from studying this book has prepared me to apply myself to the real world using correct calcuations. I highly recommend it to all pharmacy technicians as an easy tool for excellent learning. Thank you to the author for creating a great guide for pharmacy technicians!

Pay someone to check the book for mistakes.

I'm writing a review for this book as a warning to others in the hopes that you don't buy this book. I'm studying for the National Pharm Tech exam and this book as so many mistakes that it is seriously pissing me off. Do they not bother to check for simple mistakes? Every chapter has a mistake, this is not an exageration. The book will contradict itself right on the same page. For example, the book says that 6oz is a cup. Then in the practice question ON THE SAME PAGE, the correct answer is 8oz for a cup. Mistakes like this are very common. If it were a couple I can forgive it but it has too many. If you start believing the book, you will learn the material incorrectly. Some of the medication information is wrong. The only reason I caught it is because my wife is a registered pharmacist and she caught the mistakes. So I was learning the wrong information which would of made me fail the exam. I double checked on the internet and she was right, the book has mistakes.

Just beware of the book if you decide to buy it. But with too many mistakes on the practice tests, it just gets fustrating not knowing if you really did get the right answer.

FIND ANOTHER CALCULATIONS BOOK. STAY AWAY!

Needs more work.

I was expecting more problems and less explanation. As a Pharmacy Tech Instructor I think we need more problems for the students. The instructor can explain how to do the math. This is a new text (copyright 2007), but the author includes a label from Propulsid. This drug has been off the market for 5-6 years. Also, instead of using the D,H, Q formula I prefer Dimensional Analysis (aka Unit Cancellation). I recommend Math Calculations for Pharmacy Technicians a Worktext by Fulcher.

This isn't a book, the back of it even says "This booklet", although I'm not sure if it should even be called that. It has very limited information, most of it being geared towards someone who has never taken a spanish course (ever). Simple things like numbers and simple phrases are within but this would be useless if you were actually trying to converese with a spanish speaking patient.

it's more than a pamphlet. it's a small soft-cover book, that I use every day that I am at work. It tells me how to type in the sigs in Spanish, and loose counseling. I think it's great.

Did you say book?

I disliked this book. The term "book" is used rather loosely, as it would better be described as a pamphlet. On page 34 it tells you how to say "one (1), una/uno, OO-nah/OO-no" as well as other essential numbers. Wowee! A small English/Spanish dictionary or a small Spanish medical book would be a much better investment.

I have reviewed this excellent book. This book guides you through all process required for validation from FDA. In new edition, the author should give more details and technical guidance for control systems and software validation. Also to help in 21 CFR 11 approval. CD-ROM with the book is a help to cut down all the time wasted in formatting information and make templtes for crtical forms. Congratulations for writing this exceelent book.

BIG WASTE of MONIES and TIME
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-09
This book may be just as the Author intended, an outline of how to set things in motion. AND, that is all that this is. Don't fool around with this one... you'd be better off going to the FDA site for their guidelines.

The CD is a jokingly filled example of templates that waste your time and you have to put more energy into them to configure for your uses.

ALSO, there really is NO MASTER VALIDATION PLAN within this. It's a poor example of going about things. It may seem clear, but there is no flow to it whatsoever and it is confusing.

I've been in this field of Validation and MVP and medical for yrars... this is a pure MESS. Soon, I might write a real book.

I'm sorry to report that this book merely presents an outline of steps to take, along with a collection of document templates, neither of which contain any actual "content". In other words, it tells you "what", but not "how". If you're looking for insight and real-world examples, look elsewhere. I couldn't justify a bunch of blank forms and outlines for such a cover-price. I sent mine back and Amazon graciously refunded my money.

The Guide to Common Sense

Review Date: 2008-07-08
The book is good guide for students in pharmacy or someone seeking to enter into the field but basically the book is a huge guide in common sense. Everything in the book is common sense and provides tons of examples for all the lessons taught in each of the chapters. And all the chapters are designed to complement what is previously taught on the earlier chapters.

Not A Good Idea

Review Date: 2008-01-25
The information in this book is not at all practical in an actual pharmacy. The author seems to advise using extensive, drawn-out conversations that take far too much time to be used in real pharmacy settings. These ideas sound promising in theory but can not be applied in the real world. It seems as if his only experience may be in the confines of a university building and not with real patients. Do not waste money on this item.

Nicely covers the broad areas of forecasting, and thats just what it does. It does not get in to the details. So if you are someone who wants to brush your knowledge then this is for you, but if you are looking to learn new methods then maybe you may want to look at some other options.

Get A Real Review Book Instead
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-13
This book is great for quizzing you so you know what subjects to brush up on. THe CD can also get you used to the CAT format. But having taken the NAPLEX after using this book and several others, you will never see these questions on the NAPLEX. The chances of seeing the same question is almost zilch. Its better to know your key subjects well (HTN, DM, HIV, etc) then learn facts here and there about everything. That's what this book does for you. Its a compilation of specific questions. I recommend a review book such as APHA's Comprehensive Pharmacy Review, or Kaplans Naplex review instead. If you spend more time with these than the question books, you'll be glad when you see the questions pop on on the actual exam!

Not suitable for PEBC preparation
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-21
As far as I know, there is no exam guide for PEBC and Canadian students have to use American guide books to prepare for PEBC. There are some good American books which contain a lot of information, this is definitely not one of them. Overall, the questions are too easy and too simple. The answers are often incomplete and there are many incorrect answers and questions. Actual PEBC questions are more complex and difficult and this guide book may only be useful in the beginning of preparation to see where you stand. I think Comprehensive Pharmacy Review and Appleton & Lange's Review of Pharmacy are much better books to study.

nurse practitioner drug handbook

Review Date: 2001-12-11
So far, I have looked up about 6 drugs and a handful of diseases - none of them appeared in the book. I am very disappointed, and have put the book aside for reference at home. Again, when I pick it up at home it often doesn't have the drug I'm looking for. I would not bring it to work because I cannot afford to not be able to find the information I need at work. At work I use Tarascon, where drugs are divided neatly into classes, and Nursing 2000 drug handbook for Pt. teaching needs.

Excellent clinical reference for those in family practice!

Great book that allows the ARNP to prescribe medications with confidence. More advanced than nursing drug books and very helpful for anyone in family practice. Includes information that I find helpful in dealing with a pediatric population. Also addresses new drugs not frequently covered in ordinary drug books currently available. I plan to upgrade with any new additions.

This book appears to have been written by a 2nd grader. SO many typos, so many contradictions--and the reading comprehension, well let's just say that just about every question has two possible answers, ambiguous and opinionated. The typos alone make this book not worth purchasing. I'm going to have to buy a different book--do NOT under any circumstance buy this book--by the way, it's not really five exams--many of the same questions show up again and again throughout.

The answer keys are often wrong. Sometimes simply B instead of C, but several math errors where the correct answer they have listed is completely wrong. This book will underprepare you for the real PCAT. Avoid at all costs

Good practice
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-25
Decent practice test questions for math, biological, & orgo & general chemistry. However, the verbal analogies/sentence completions are too easy, and the reading comprehension section depends primarily on outside knowledge and assumptions, rather than actual reading of passages. E.g., a question asked about the bioethical scientist's view on stem cell research. The direct statement from the passage states that the bioethical scientists want more stringent laws regarding the research, without explaining why they advocated legal regulations. However, the correct answer given by Cliffs is that the scientists debate whether people have the right to play God...Nowhere in the passage was God/religion ever mentioned.
Also, some answers to chemistry and math questions provided wrong letter choices, even though explanations were correct. There are also typos in the questions and answers.

Great general review for the PCAT experience. Just plug through all five exams and use them as a means to identify weak areas. NOT a review or reference book. Few errors/typos stop this from being a 5.

Good PCAT prep

Review Date: 2006-12-13
This book provides a comprehensive review of everything you need to know on the PCAT but cannot be used alone. For more detailed help, supplement with an MCAT prep book because the information is pretty much the same on the PCAT.
