Best Pharmacology for PA-C's

Like Donna M. Fenske, who also rated this text, I had purchased many expensive Pharm Texts before buying the 1st edition of this text. At the time I was a PA-C Student at Stanford School of Medicine and this was the best text for successful completion of the program and certification as a PA-C. I am about to take my re-cert (PANRE) and will buy the second edtion. It is straight forward, no fluff and to the point. I think, at my suggestion, this is the current textbook for Pharm at my Alma Mater.... as it Should be! Thank you Virginia and Andrew, well done!

Pharmacotherapeutic for Advanced Practice: A Practical Approach by Arcangelo & Peterson is an excellent resource book with in depth descriptions of medications, herbal products and their uses, as well as dosages, including information on adverse reactions and drug interactions. An excellent resource!

I just completed my Family Nurse Practitioner Program. I have purchased several EXPENSIVE pharmacology books over the past three years, all which made the pharm complicated and difficult to understand. This book is the best, easy to carry and easy to read. The cover is wimpy so am going to take it to a graphics place and have a binder put on it so it does not fall apart.

A must have for a house officer or practitioner. Though it is a little big to put in you pocket it is well presented and well organized. Actually you can get it into your lab coat pocket.

Great book, easy to use. I need 8th edition.

The book is very easy to use and has been an asset in pharmacy school. Gives you the pertinent information quickly. I like it better than our required Drug Information. Many students in both the Pharmacy and PA program like it.

If you can only have one drug reference book, this is it. It's better than anything else I've seen. If you're a pharmacist or a pharmacy student, and don't have a photographic memory, get this book. Unlike Facts or PDR, this book let's you look up essential info quickly. I've notice APhA's handbook is full of typo's.(e.g take food w/APAP) I've been using this book for six years now. It's my favorite book! (At least until the new edition comes out.)

The PDR tells you all the problems with side effects with drugs--I use it all the time to look up drugs as a medical secretary. However, this book is a lot easier to read for a layperson.

A great eye opener on prescription drugs.

The copy I have read was published in 1997 by Harmony books and probably pretty much similar to this 1998 edition. Dr. Bosker displays a great courage in exposing some of the money savings the managed care organizations. Dr. Bosker explains that generics are possibly not as effective as originals but they are pushed anyway to save money. How many of us were repeatedly assured that they use same chemicals and they are same. You will love MedRANK Life checklists and find out if your medications are the optimal ones subscribed for the ailment. I enjoyed the book and consider it a gift of service to all of us by Dr. Gideon Bosker.

A vital guide to prescription drugs
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-15
The warning, "Consumer beware!" is crucial in the matter of prescription drugs, and Dr. Bosker's book can greatly assist you in educating yourself about them. He states which medications work, which ones don't, which are unacceptably unsafe, and which ones are dangerous in combination with each other in these areas: childhood disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, psychiatric problems, asthma, allergies, skin conditions, stroke, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, infections, cancer, HIV, osteoporosis, arthritis, pain relief, prostate problems, menopause, contraception, and life extension.

Though Dr. Bosker's book covers an intimidating subject in a very comprehensive way, fortunately, his writing is clear and straightforward and the book is well laid out, so it is easy to use. An index and table of contents allow you to look up the specific medications you're interested in and zip to the section that covers them. There is also a bibliography of references, if you want to do further reading, and a list of organizations which can give you more information about prescription drugs.

I believe this important reference book should be in every American home, particularly those with children on medications or with elderly people who have multiple prescriptions.

The Accu-Calc System gives the user a choice as to how you want to answer the test problems: formula method, ratio/proportion and the dimensional analysis method.
I cannot express how helpful this system is in order to accurately prepare the Nursing Student for their test(s). The Math for Meds book is a good primer however, Accu-Calc is an even greater asset to have throughout Nursing school. You are tested on fractions, ratios, percents, metric conversions, and Medical Abbreviations. Then there are more advanced testing for medication dosages that are priceless.

Bauer does an excellent job of explaining the basics and details of pharmacokinetics; this book is great guide for both students and practicing clinicians. Many pharmacokinetic residents and fellows live by this book and it came highly reccommended to me by experienced clinicians.

Nuts and bolts kinetics

Review Date: 2002-03-02
As you read this text it becomes apparent that it was written by an in-the-trenches clinical pharmacist. It focuses on the practical application of pharmacokinetics in patient care. The text is very readable, written in an easy to follow style. The tables and illustrations are well presented, providing insight to the topic. There are chapters on aminoglycosides, vancomycin, digoxin, antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, cylcosporine, lithium, and theophylline. Each chapter contains practical step-by-step examples for both initial dosage determinations and serum level analysis. But you'll need to look elsewhere for pediatric pk information, application to peds is limited.

Handbook includes disease states, and categorizes medications of primary choice, and provides secondary alternatives. There are excellent abbreviated text outlining etiology and pathophysiological parameters. As well as step wise flow charts as a decision tool and guideline. The tables for medication dosing and comparability between different classes of drugs are extremely helpful, visually and content wise! In hospital pharmacy practice, this handbook has been my peripheral brain.

I am three weeks from graduation, and did not have an understanding of pharmacology, but when I found this book in the store, I had to purchase it. Any book written by this series is worth having for an emerging practical nurse. The study guide is comprehensible as well. At least, I'll have a mastery of the drugs by the time I take the state boards!
