A very complete & concise guide to every known medicinal.

This is an excellent & complete reference to every medicinal product from Dristan Nasal Spray to marijuana to Zyrtec. It
includes uses, abuses, side effects, interactions, FDA warnings and results of scientific research (if available) for every
known drug. It is in dictionary format with references and cross references for scientific, generic and common names of
each medicine. All of the pharmacological terms are also referenced. The book uses readily understandable descriptions
without being oversimplified. There are not specific dosage recommendations and there are no illustrations, but otherwise
this book has everything. I recommend it for health care professionals as well as consumers and give it 4 and 1/2 stars.

As a paramedic student taking an intro pharmacology course on the side, I found this text to be quite applicable. The overview
of conditions prior to the explaination of current drug therapy provides a suffient reference for the reader to understand
the basics of why certain pharmacological therapies are used. In addition, the CD animations provide a useful graphical description
of specific drug mechanisms. I found this book to be a great overview and introduction to the subject.

A fasinating book that, unfortunately, needs to be updated, however, the statistics are startling. An excellent basis for
the belief of a conspiracy against the food suppliment industry.A must read for those who are looking for a quick fix, or
have family or friends that pop a pill for everything that ails them. A wonderful inside look at the bedroom relationship
between drug manufacturers and the government.

The book is a collection of research chapters on various aspects of protein pharmaceuticals, contributed by authors who are
at firms in this industry. The topics are broad.
One topic is how to thermally sterilise the manufacturing. There's some elementary thermodynamics and kinetics covered here, that centres on killing off microbes. A key idea is that sterility is not an absolute, binary concept, but is modelled by a probability distribution. A pragmatic recognition that absolute assurance is often unnecessary and too expensive.
Typically, the chapters contain a mixture of basic chemistry and biology, along with engineering issues and diagrams that are needed in a production environment.

This book lives up to its billing. It is quite clear and simple and well constructed. It is an easy read, with larger font
print and ample use of white space. It "walks the talk" so to speak. Very up-to-date and even addresses state-of-the-art
documentaion techniques along with the difficult security issues that such techniques provide in a decentralized envrionment.
Chock full of gems about documentation that I hadn't even thought of! And I have been in the business longer than the author!!
Good work, James!

In phase 2 of the drug development process after a drug has shown to satisfy proof of concept on efficacy a clinical trial
is generally run with subjects randomized to a placebo or one of several dose of the drug. This is done to find the dose
that is most effective but still safe for use. This book covers the various methods for accomplishing this task. The goal
is often to find what is called the maximally tolerated dose (MTD, highest dose meeting safety requirements). Two of the
chapters are devoted to the challenging problem of doing this for oncology trials. Methods for determining sample size requirements
and the need for PK/PD studies are all considered in this book.

This book has been recommended by pharmacists to those of us who need a complete drug reference. It is exhaustive and comprehensive
in its utility as a drug reference. If you've got to have a complete guide for your hospital or office, this is it.
Now you may be thinking does this compete with the PDR?
Whereas the PDR looks like a bunch of drug packaging inserts (which is fine if that's the way you want to look stuff up, I do it that way all the time) Drug Facts and Comparisons is about as complete as it comes.
If you want a pocket reference, there are others. But if you need a comprehensive, definitive, gold standard reference...This is it.

Both Jack Uetrecht and William Trager are well known and respected scientists in the field of drug metabolism. The book is
short (especially for $100) but informative. If you work in the field of drug metabolism it is worth the price.

This is another great book in the OUP series of very short introductions. The book covers the history of drugs, the action
and uses of various drugs for specific conditions (e.g. heart disease), recreational drugs, and modern drug development. It
is written in a simple, easy to understand style that does not presuppose any chemical knowledge or scientific background.
