This resource is so workable...I have no trouble finding any Medication that I need to follow up on for my job...I just received the book only 6 weeks ago and already the pages are all rumpled...I have a new "Buddy" at my job that answers all my questions with out making me wait!

Incomplete. Misssing entries for common drugs.

Two of the few drugs that I ever needed to look up are not even in this book. Glucagon which is a very common antihypoglycemic for one. The combination antihypertemsive drug Diovan HCT was not even mentioned either. I had to go out and but a second reference to supplement this one.

You need this book, if you're an open minded nurse!

I don't like it - I work in critical care and it fails to list the intravenous drug compatibilities that Nursing 2004 Drug Reference has. IN critical care IV drug compatibilities are so important! So, I'm still relying on my Nursing 2004 book at work. Will not buy this book again - wasted my money - Janet

I use this book daily in my work and consider it a vital part of my analyzing the interaction of prescribed drug use among my clients. I am not a health care professional, but need access to medication descriptions and usages. The "PDR Nurse's Drug Handbook" is easy to use and includes a detailed index that makes it easy to look meds up. The book also lists generic drug names and includes dosages and interaction information. Highly recommend for anybody involved in prescribing or administering drugs.

A much better review

From my own experience, the best review you can get for NAPLEX is one by KAPLAN, very straight to the point and very clear. APHA is a good review as well, it has up to date information and tables (with Brand names) summarizing important points, for me it was much better than CPR by Shargel; which was too much comprehensive ,boring, and information needs to be updated, i.e. even though I had the 2005 version, it has many missing new drugs which you will be asked about in NAPLEX. After you go through a review that you like, make sure to go through Appelton and Lange Q&A's, it helps wrapping up any points that you missed, make sure you understand the concept from the answer to the question not just memorizing the answer to the question. I personally found many questions in the NAPLEX directly related to others in the Appelton, many friends of mine said the same so I recommend it. Also, do not ever buy "NAPLEX Secrets" Study Guide (by Morrison Media LLC), it is a big lie! My friend bought it and it was not worth a penny!. Finally, make sure you study by heart the top dispensed 300 drugs in retail/hospital.

i scored a "1" here just to get your attention.
still studying for the NAPLEX, so i can't tell you how useful this book is; however, the edition Amazon.com sends you does NOT include the CD-ROM...despite the advertisement on the cover: "FREE! CD-ROM ENCLOSED."
i tried twice with Amazon.
[like you & I don't have enough guiac going on now, right?]
so-- order from APhA, cause they are the ones that "made" this book, or...
call the Publisher and ask for the REAL goods/ book + CD-ROM: 212-644-9696
the CD-ROM has instilled HUGH confidence, and is worth the trouble pursuing.

I am currently using both CPR by Shargel and this APHA for Naplex. Although I have not yet taken the exam, I dont think there is a difference in reviewing this book without yet being successful. People who read the same book but some passed some did not. Its the person, not the book. All the info you need is there. Its a matter how you studied and retained it. If i fail, i'll still be reading the same materials.

I am done reading CPR and now with APHA's. It has a better lecture format coz its two-columned. Not too boring and lectury.
Its a great review book, according to my seniors who took the Naplex. Its not that popular than CPR coz its fairly new, but like i said, my colleagues recommend it, so will i.

This edition of "The Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, & Biologicals" shows remarkable improvement over its predecessor.
Boasting of diverse groups of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is a success in its own right. There are just plenty to be explored! The book brims with accurate up-to-date information. Pharmacists, Medics, Chemists, Biologists, Physicists, Agriculturists, and many other professionals who work with elements, compounds and mixtures will find this book very useful. It is revised, and is complemented with detailed descriptions, which include molecular formulae, molecular weights, as well as the percentage compositions of constituent chemicals in a compound or mixture.
It is a valuable reference tool.

There is a major bug with the CD software.

The problem can be resolved by thier "stupid" customer service people, if you can somehow convince them that you have the correct CD. The Merck software is excellent, and the Cambridgesoft software running it is terrible, I feel sorry for Merck. It wouldn't run properly on my machine, I had to go back and forth over 4 days to resolve this issue with their outsourced (to India) technical staff via email. Apparently if you have a previous version of Merck installed with Cambridgesoft software on your XP, then you will need to perform some surgery on your Registry, and then install an update into certain files locaed on the C drive.

Once you get it working, it should be fine.

No doubt however that the TEXT Merck Index is EXCELLENT.

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn't find the Q's. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware....count your pages when you get this book.

Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.

Review Date: 2007-09-05
I found this book to be a great supplement to the Kaplan guide as Kaplan tends to get very monotonous. The detailed answers on the back of each flashcard were very helpful and full of lots of good info, especially in the biology section. And just the style of the book makes it a quick and convenient way to practice answering questions. The questions in here were a bit easier than the actual PCAT so I highly recommend using it as a SUPPLEMENTAL guide only.

Off to a good start

I would give this item a total of 3.5 stars(if it were an option.) I believe that this is a good way to begin your PCAT study, it kinda just breaks the ice. But, it seems a little simple in comparison to the kind of questions asked by the Kaplan books(Kaplan was said to be the only company with actual access to the old PCAT exams.) Therefore, I would recommend this title, but mainly to break the ice for the real studying!

Essential reference book

Review Date: 2008-07-21
The "A-Z" Guide is an essential reference book for anyone who take supplements (vitamins, minerals, or herbs) and also takes medication of any kind--whether over-the-counter or prescription.

This is a comprehensive and very easy-to-use reference guide. You can look up either the medicine or the supplement and found out whether there are any known interactions--positive or negative.

Sometimes the Guide recommends supplements to take along with the medication because the drug either depletes a nutrient (e.g. Lipitor and Coenzyme Q10) or reduces a drug's side effects (e.g. Zoloft and Ginkgo). At other times you shouldn't take the drug and the supplement together because.

Thousands and thousands of well-referenced interactions are included in this valuable book.

NOTE: Some of the earlier reviews of this book refer to the first edition. They cite some legitimate concerns--which appear to have been remedied in the 2nd Edition.

Review Date: 2007-02-21
I purchased this book as I have fibromyalgia and wanted to try some alternative therapies, and ensure their safety with my prescription medications. I feel that it is an excellent guide for that, and actually is quite useful as a simplified prescription medication guide. It is easy to use, easy to understand, and does a great job of listing and describing medication/herbal/vitamin/supplement interactions. I purchased one for my parents, and my sister purchased one as well. Very useful book if you take any medications and any other type of supplement.

Includes just about every medication available, with the exception of those released after its publication.

Good but not current enough for me.

Review Date: 2007-07-12
I am taking a medication that isn't BRAND new to the market but isn't by any means OLD either. It has been released within the last 4 years. I was hoping it would be in this book as I am also taking herbal supplements, but it wasn't. There were other drugs that were supposed to be for the same conditions, but since they are different chemicals the interactions were potentially different, so I didn't find this helpful.

That said, there are plenty of maintstream medications like antibiotics, etc. included in this book so it might be helpful to some folks. I just think that drugs, like computers, change so quickly that books like this can't cover everything. I am on the fence with my recommendation on this one.

This book is great for figuring out what topics you need to work on. I would recommend using this book and the CD-ROM first, and then using your class notes, APHA or Kaplan book to work on your weaknesses. The NAPLEX changed in 2005. This book may have been enough back then, but not anymore. STUDY TIPS: All you need is a month or less. Make sure you study brand-generics, calculations, HIV, chemo, and all major disease states (DM, HTN, etc...). The test was more hospital based than I expected, so review your rotation binders. I used this and the Kaplan book and I passed easily. Good luck!

I studied this book from cover to cover and from cover to cover again while I awaited my exam date. Once I got started on the actual NAPLEX the questions were almost elementary after having gone through the somewhat rigorous questions found in this guide. The CDrom test is handy but ultimately once you have taken it once the test doesn't change and is therefore useless. I suggest this study tool and can't emphasize enough how much it made the actual exam easy.

If you are not a specialist in the field of drug discovery but need nevertheless to have a comprehensive knowledge of the process that starts at the discovery of a potential new drug and ends at the registration of the drug with a regulatory agency, this book is for you. The book is full of flowcharts and illustrations that help you to understand the process. It's certainly not a book for specialists, but can be really helpful for lawyers, contracts officers and everyone who works in the drug discovery industry.

It's tough to learn quickly about the complexities of pharma R&D. This is a useful guide for those new to the industry and fills in the gaps for those more experienced. Like all books of its type, it will age quite rapidly in an sector undergoing rapid scientific and organizational change.

Review Date: 2006-08-21
I work in an organization that supports advanced gene therapy research that may lead to new therapies for chronic and life threatening diseases, but I am not a scientist. As a communicator, I needed to understand the long and arduous journey from discovery to pre-clinical research, to FDA-approved clinical manufacturing, and to human clinical trials. This book was excellent in helping me understand both the research and the regulatory environment.

The author says it best in the introduction, "The intention of this book is to provide an overview about how a drug is discovered, the amount of and types of laboratory tests that are performed, and the conduct of clinical trials before a drug is ready to registered for human use." The author also fully explains the role of regulatory authorities in these processes.

The book includes chapters on:
Drug discovery
Drug development and preclinical studies
Clinical trials
Good Manufacturing Practice

You'll also learn about things like toxicology studies, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics, and Investigational New Drug applications. Although the book contains some technical discussions and exhibits, the author has a logical and easy-to-understand way of presenting the information.

If, like me, you need to get a better understanding of process of getting basic drug research to the market, this book is for you.

Broad coverage with little in-depth detail
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-08
This book is written to cover a broad range of topics related to the drug discovery and approval process. Since so many topics are covered, there is very little in-depth coverage on any particular topic. It's suitable people who don't have any serious scientific training or experience in the industry. If you are looking for a high-level overview, this is a good book. If you would like more detailed information about any specific topic, you should probably look elsewhere. Some of the explaintions are over simplied in order for the average reader to understand. Much of the material covered in the book can be found in much greater detail by visiting the fda site or googling for the code of federal regulations. But if you do not what the FDA is or what CFR stands for, this book is probably right for you.

I bought this book as a prep for the NCLEX. However, there is so much information to know on these drugs that it's impossible to memorize. I studied just the classification of drugs, with an emphasis on Digox, Heparin, Coumadin, and the classes of antibiotics. Know the theraputic and toxic levels of digoxin, know the loading does and the maintenance doses too. Know the Ptt for heparin and Pt for coumadin, know the antidotes. Finally know the classes of antibiotics, and lab values to watch for, namely BUN and creatinine. These are the drug issues that are stressed for the NCLEX, in all of the prep books I used.

I recently wrote the Canadian version of the pharmacy licencing exam - the PEBC's. I did find this book very helpful for studying because each section was laid out well and very clearly explains the important features of each disease and drug therapy. Unfortunately, it did not cover all the important topics. For example, cholesterol and lipids, GERD, and alcoholic liver disease weren't covered. But the topics that are covered are done very well and it makes a great addition to therapeutics notes.
A caution for Canadians - I would recommend this book but beware of the fact that not all of the listed drugs are available here (nor are all our drugs listed in it) and that the questions in the samples and practice exams are not very representative. They are a great studying tool to see how much information you got from each section, just don't expect your exam to resemble them much.

This was an excellent review guide for both the PEBC's and FPGEE. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. Every chapter is followed by a brief multiple choice quiz and the answers are well explained. It covers everything from basic pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical sciences, med chem, most disease states, nutritional therapy, cancer, calculations, references etc. Note that the book is american, so not all Canadian drugs are included plus it focuses in on american law, regulations etc. It has a number of excellent appendices, index, and table of contents. The accompanying Practice Exam book is most suitable for the NAPLEX as it contains case based questions from the patient's MAR or RX profile with many multiple choice questions. I definately recommend this as a general pharmacy review guide and reference!

I really don't feel like this book is very comprehensive. For example, for a certain disease state they will list the MOA for one drug class, but not another. I guess a good way to sum up this book is INCOMPLETE. I'm studying for the California boards and this book is better than nothing, but everyone tells me Koda-Kimble is the way to study. Don't waste your money on this one.

To be honest, I really didn't use this book to study from.....it's too comprehensive for the pharmacy boards...remember the board exam is just a minimum competencey exam...i actually bought it for the practice exams which are useful cause they not only give you the correct answer in the back but tell u why it is correct and why the other choices are not!! Don't get discouraged if you barely even get half of them right....they are again a little too comprehensive but they do a good job to steer u in the direction of topics that u probably overlooked. I suggest to take the 2 exams in the end as review.......u will appreciate the text book as a reference once u become a pharmamcist and want to brush up on a topic!! If your're wondering what text I used to study from it was the Kaplan text....it is geared for the boards and i guarantee u if u can get your hands on it (I had a friend who took the course and let me borrow the book) you'll be good to go!!!!
