This is a fantastic little reference book -- a must for every woman's bookshelf. It has all the essential ingredients: easy to navigate, loaded with information, written in language anyone can understand. I can't tell you how often I've turned to this book. I used to go from one "guidebook" to the next, searching for information about medications. Now I've learned -- this is the first one I go to and, invariably, it's the only one I need. Thank you, Julie Catalano! Your book is a lifesaver!

I was supposed to order this book for my ADRN program, and I have found it wonderful and easy to use. People have to keep in mind that it doesn't have every drug that ever existed in here, but I am able to understand well and get my homework done. I will always keep this book and use it for reference once I graduate. This not only was required, but if it wasn't, I would recommend it.

Just as I expected!

This book got me through my first year of clinicals!!!!!!!!
As a nursing student we were required to know all the information possible for the medications our patients would be taking. This drug guide helped me so much! It comes with a CD you can put on your computer so you can just type in the name and look up information about certain drugs. If you don't have a computer at the time though, this book is small enough to just carry around with you and contains every bit of information you will need to know about medications. It was very helpful!!!

I am currently taking pharmacology, and this book compliments the course very well. If you worried about how in-depth this book goes, don't be. Almost everything we have talked about in class has been discussed in the BRS for Pharmacology. If it wasn't, then I can consult an online book through our library or simply google a topic.

Cheap book for sufficient and effective learning.

I am using this book to study Pharm in med school. It is organized well and fairly easy to read. It also has good organizational charts and important sidelights that help you retain what's important. I'd recommend this if you are a med student who is looking for an alternative to a traditional textbook. I also recommend using flashcards as an add-on studying tool.

I like the book so far. Its is compact yet readable. If you have used Lippincott for Biochemistry this book is similar in size, and has a similar layout as the Bichem book. If you attend SMU I recommend also ordering Katzung Board review for practice questions as Dr.K and Dr.G will recommend that you purchase it.

it was a very good book although there are too many things that are missing. but it's good if you have to look after a drug very quickly. the drugs description is very punctual and with a brief phrase of what they do. I really like it. and the delivery was very quick. thank you for all.

This book is a good book to use when starting to learn pharmaceutical nomenclature, mechanisms, and applications. This like the Lippincott's Biochemistry; it has plenty of diagrams and charts to help with the sometimes boring material/topic. However, this book easily teaches main medications to administer.

Anyone that has bought a previous edition, will want to update as this edition has many newer drugs that were not previously available. Only complaint is that it would be good to have pictures of the generics as so many people can no longer afford the brand name, and the generic pill can look very different.

It is so important for those of us who take meds to have a copy of a book telling us the side effects of those meds, and listing the various meds which fall into the same family, mostly, but not limited to being able to watch and guard against being mistakenly prescribed something to which we are allergic, even when our doctors and pharmacies know to what we are allergic. We are that last line of defense against such things happening. Then last, but certainly not the least, to know the possible side effects of such meds, and other information such as warnings for each med. I like this particular book finding it more informative than others I've bought, and buy an updated copy at least every couple of years, but more preferably every year.

It's good.

I bought this book based on other people's recommendation of this book. I was disappointed and the lesson I have learned was not to buy a book other the internet without having a chance to flip through it. The print is large so there isn't much ailments covered. If you want an herbal pharmacy guide, I would go with something else. This is basically an "herbs for dummies" book, not a book with real solutions. DON'T BUY. I want my money back..

This compendium of natural remedies, compiled by James Duke, offers herbal and occasionally nutritional solutions for coping with over one hundred different health issues. You can find "Arthritis soup", broth for strengthening bones, "Biblical brainfood soup", soup for strengthening your heart, herbs for dealing with allergies, tea from breast enlargement, even how to make your shampoo to get rid of dandruff.

I have an assortment of books with herbal remedies and this one is among the best of them. What puzzles me is that while they may mention which parts of the herbs to use, practically none of them mention that some constituents in herbs are water soluble, some are only soluble in alcohol, some in oil, and that different methods of preparing herbs will influence what you get out of those herbs. This book also, for the most part, just mentions the herb's name and what are the healing constituents, but it doesn't say what by what method of extraction do you get which constituents.

I bought this book reading that it is UNBIASED.... they then go to explain that "They want to educate people so people will make THEIR own decision... to say NO to drugs". That's BIASED!

I took a highlighter and highlighted everything in the book that I found that I felt was biased, or any sentence that they themselves would say.... "well we really don't know"..... My whole book looks yellow.

About as knowledgeable as you'd expect ANY non-drug user to be on the subject of drugs.

How bout' these sobrietists start writing things they know about....
Cuz, Drugs...... they don't know.

Utterly Useless, waste of ...... everything.... DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

I bought this book for a University class that I am taking. It is packed with information. Some chapters are pretty scientific (especially the chapter on the brain). The authors do a good job, even for a scientifically challenged reader like myself. If you want to know the most current info on drugs, this is the book to pick up.

Interesting but could use more experiences

This is an interesting book. I read it because I also read From Chocolate to Morphine. This book provides a useful survey of a range of drugs, from alchohol to PCP. It provides a good overview of the effects of the various drugs, the problems that can result from taking them, what they impact in the body and how that changes over time, and studies about them. The information is recent (I read the 3rd edition), interesting, and easy to read.

The biggest down side to the book is I would have liked more descriptions of what it is like to use the drugs. There are occasional excerpts from William Burroughs for some of the drugs, but I found From Chocolate to Morphine much more descriptive about what the experiences are like, and I would have liked this book more if it incorporated more of the direct stories, such as one would find on erowid.

Got this book as a gift for my sister, she really found it to be very informative and interesting. It has a section of color photos of different types of drugs, and in depth looks at what they all do to you.
If you know someone who uses and want a friendly way to tell them it might not be the best idea, this is a great book!
My sisters friend was looking at it too and said he had learned so much in just the 10 minutes he had looked at it!

This is such a great book. I'm happy Dr. Weil wrote it.
It is very informative, and shows the truth as well as it can.
It also has a great section of the drugs that arise naturally within the human body, and how external drugs just trigger your body to notice the highs etc. I learned alot from this book. I've gone on to check for Weil's other works, he is so great. It talks about all the drugs, their safety, myths etc... most importantly the truth behind them, which is not influenced by propaganda.
I highly recommend this work.

Intro to History, Uses & Properties of Psychoactive Drugs.
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-26
"From Chocolate to Morphine" (2004 edition) attempts to be a basic encyclopedic reference of psychoactive drugs and their uses, whose goal is to provide objective information on the risks and benefits of prescription, over-the-counter, illegal, and natural drugs for a modern audience living in a very drug-soaked society. The authors, Dr. Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen, are forthright about their perspective: "We cannot say that we have no biases about drugs, but we think that we know what our biases are." They don't generally encourage or discourage recreational drug use. Instead, they repeatedly emphasize the necessity of education and avoiding dependency if one is to use drugs beneficially. I say "generally", because the authors' tone betrays obvious disdain for a few drugs and affection for some others.

The authors outline their viewpoint and purpose in the book's first chapter, where they also offer some rather silly advice to parents, teachers, and teens on communicating about drugs. But the book improves from there. Chapters 2-5 provide basic information: What is a Drug, Why People Use Drugs, Relationships with Drugs, and Types of Drugs. This is followed by chapters on Stimulants, Depressants, Psychedelics, Marijuana, a sort of catch-all chapter on Solvents and Inhalants/Deliriants/PCP and Ketamine, and Medical Drugs/Herbal Remedies/Smart Drugs. The information on each drug is not what I would call complete, and it probably isn't meant to be. Caffeine is handled poorly. Its immunosuppressant, diuretic, and damaging effects on the linings of blood vessels are not mentioned. On the other hand, the cases against tobacco and alcohol may be overstated. The book is very hard on heroin, speaks well of marijuana, but omits glaucoma treatment when discussing medicinal uses. The authors don't like anti-depressants, especially SSRIs. I can't say that I blame them, but, oddly, they are more harsh when discussing antihistamines. Descriptions for each drug contain history and basic information on uses, effects, and dangers. One of the best features of "From Chocolate to Morphine" is the Suggested Reading at the end of each chapter, which provides a list of related books and films for those readers who would like more detailed information.

The final chapters of the book address Problems with Drugs, Alternatives to Drugs, and the authors give us some Final Words on the subject of drug use -including some interesting advice regarding the treatment of drug addiction. The Appendix contains about 40 pages of interesting "First Person Accounts and Comments" on drug use, and is followed by a glossary and an index. Dr. Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen don't hide their contempt for the current drug hysteria and drug policies in the United States. Nor do they deny how easy it is to become dependent on drugs if they are used carelessly or for the wrong reasons. "From Chocolate to Morphine" isn't a definitive work on psychoactive drugs, but it's a good primer that is easy to read. Those who intend to use any of these drugs on a regular basis will want more detailed information, for which the Suggested Reading sections are excellent guides.

Forget DARE -- Teach From This Book in Schools

Review Date: 2007-05-13
The title really says everything that needs to be said. This is a wonderful, unbiased book that's almost 100% scientifically accurate, which is far more than can be said about most books that purport to tell you everything you need to know about drugs and/or drug use and especially about drug users.

EDIT: After reading other reviews I've discovered that there's a lot of misunderstanding about the purpose of FCtM. It's meant to be a basic primer on responsible drug use -- not an encyclopedia of every bit of information about specific drugs, not a guide to the Nasty Gritty World of Drug Abuse, and not a DARE handbook. If you read it expecting something it's not intended to give, you'll be disappointed. It is a basic handbook that attempts to teach conservative, sensible methods for using drugs (including caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs our society approves of) intelligently, safely, and hence responsibly. If that's what you're looking for, continue. If not, keep looking. (But you should read it anyway to shed your biases, just in case.)

I do not have any real problems with the book or with Dr. Weil's work in general. Things have happened since 2004, including extremely important new scientific information on the role of GABA and endorphins in anxiety and depression, which Dr. Weil and Ms. Rosen may or may not have been aware of and which has enormous implications regarding the use and abuse of heroin and other opiates.

The only out-and-out error I've noticed thus far in the book is a statement that claims the prescription medicine Adderall contains 'dextroamphetamine and methamphetamine'. It contains d-amp. and amphetamine, not methamphetamine.

He is more cautious than I would be, and I disagree with some of his conclusions (for example, that certain routes of administration are inherently abusive and/or more dangerous than others); compared to what else is out there and what others have said and done, however, this is an incredible book with few, if any, true peers in quality and comprehensiveness.

This book will not completely correct the damage done by DARE and years of social conditioning, but it will certainly help. It should be required reading in Health class for every single high schooler, at least. Enough said.

Not for kid's education!

Pharm was definitely my hardest subject during nursing school. I had a hard time keeping all the drug classes straight, but this incredible textbook gave me the exact tools I needed to understand the drugs. With Lehne's sense of humor (in chapter 1 she writes a note to the "chemophobes" - those of us who are scared of chemistry class!) makes this text book interesting and easy to read.

It's worth it. Not a lot of details on the chemistry, but it's great for the practicioner who needs the practical information. The background parts that discuss physiology and some chem are excellent to keep things in context.
