Review Date: 2007-10-06

Simply a must have for all parents. Wolfgang Rietig reveals in a short and precise style all secrets parents try to find out when they fist hear about that mysterious "sudden infant death". What is it? What is the reason for it? Can it also happen to my beloved child? - And most important: What can I do to prevent it?

There are many books who claim to present the causes: Smoking, the positon the child sleeps at night etc. But it is more: It is the way how you as a parent lead your healthy or unhealthy life. It is a more generall approach taking into account all facts that lay behind the obvious.

The author gives you a great insight into how few was known before he finally reveals the mysterious about that topic as a result of his decade long research on the topic.

He describes what different factors lead to Sudden Infant Death, when a child is in danger and what you can do to save your children's life. He focusses on taking all factors of life into account. Even if you do not have a child, it is a must have if you are interrested in knowing how to lead a more healthy and therefore happy life.

Every household needs one.

Review Date: 1999-08-13
The book is very useful in determining what medications cause side-effects with one another, what foods may inter-act with medicines, side-effects from the medicine itself and any generic name for drugs. It gives recommended dosages and color pages of pills so that patients can become familiar with what type of medicines they are currently taking. It also gives information for pregnant or breast-feeding mothers and information for elderly patients. The information is written in simple language and should be in every household.

A fantastic insight into the practicalities of medicines

I found this book very fasinating- it explains in an easy-to-understand way how everyday pills work at the molecular level. The final chapters which discuss recreational drugs (LSD, alcohol etc) and poisons were equally fascinating. Full of true anecdotes, interesting and sometimes humerous stories into the discovery of drugs, truly this book is a tribute to the science of pharmacology and medicine as a whole. Every person who takes any medicine or has an interest in drug interactions (not just boffins!) should buy this book.

Piper: A Model Genus for Studies of Phytochemistry, Ecology, and Evolution

A useful approach to ecology.

Review Date: 2004-10-10
Ted Floyd offers these comments:
The modern ecologist is tugged at by two opposing forces. On the one hand, there is the continued movement toward hyper-specialization-of sub-disciplines within the field of ecology, of different lab groups and research centers, of individual ecologists themselves. On the other hand, there are ever-increasing cries for an approach that emphasizes the search for principles and paradigms that are broadly applicable across multiple ecological systems.
Piper: A Model Genus confronts the conundrums of ecological balkanization and unification head-on. The scope of this volume is as broad as the field of ecology itself, with in-depth explorations of phenomena as varied as biogeography and chemical ecology, as seemingly unrelated as phylogenetics and ethnobotany. And the supporting cast of characters is highly diverse-everything from ants to earthworms, from spiders to fruit-eating bats. But the star attraction here is a single plant genus, itself a superb mesocosm for elucidating the regular, repeated patterns and processes that underlie so much of the variation in nature. One comes away from Piper with the satisfaction of knowing that we biologists can have our cake and eat it, too: Nature is wild and messy and complex, yet we can endeavor to make sense out of it all.

Just What The Nurse Ordered!!

I have the text to this book, which was a total waste of time, because it was set up in such a way that made things more confusing, and unfortunately, have to use it for the rest of this nursing course.

Finding this pocket companion gave me just what I needed, and not a drop more, and now, I actually look forward to studying meds, and feel more confident that I will actually do well on the state boards. Too bad this is no longer printed.

This book is a must have for the medical student or resident. It has the important facts that you need to know to decide between various medications even within the same class of drugs. It also has the necessary interactions, side effects and dosing. It even has directions on how to taper doses (Ex: PO amiodarone loading and maintanence dosing). Still keep your Pharmacopeia because this book doesn't have every drug. However, for 95% of the meds you'll prescribe this is the book to have.
