I love this book, it has great advice, warnings and cites good references. It is easily readable by anyone and goes into summary lists of warning and possible drug interactions.

At what this book is selling for, it's very cheap insurance for optimum health. While it is a bit out of date, it still has enough good meat to be very worthwhile.

Fair, concise, clearly explained information

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings. A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe. I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however. Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings.

Truly an indispensable reference!

I feel it is very important that I have a good source of information aside from that which is available from the company for which I sell natural supplements. I'm often frustrated by the limited acceptance of herbal supplements and remedies in the U.S., especially those which are widely used in Europe, China, and other parts of the world. This book states "principal proposed treatments" (those which have been tested successfully in the U.S.) and "other proposed treatments" (those not tested in the U.S., but are often used in other countries). It gives details about recommended dosages, safety issues, medical interactions, etc. So far, it has provided me with information about almost every ingredient I've searched for, and has made me feel much more confident about recommending the products I sell! There is a section regarding health problems and the recommended products for treating them, then another section of herbal substances and their recommended uses. The information is alphabetized, with shaded tabs on the edges of the pages for quick look-ups. It is so organized and easy to use, it's not only the first book I reach for when I need information, often it is the ONLY book I need!

This pharmacy drug book helps me out a lot with my medical transcription job I do from home. It has the generic in lower case so I know when I am transcribing if I should capitalize it or not. It has the doses that the medication comes in and that helps. I like this book the best from all the other pharmacy drug books I've seen.

ftorres, the vendor, is very honest and prompt. The book I ordered IS like new and an undamaged CD-ROM did accompany it. Thanks FTORRES, whoever you are. I'd buy another book from this guy any time.

As for the book itself, it delivers what it's supposed to in terms of a basic grasp of medical calculations. Very practical as its applied to the current pharmaceutical market.

Great Nursing Math Book

Review Date: 2008-03-02
This book is a required text in my nursing program and it has been wonderful. I really needed practice brushing up on math and this book leads you from math basics all the way through to various methods of medication and IV calculation. One unique feature of this text: 3 different methods for calculating medications are introduced (ratio & proportion, formula, and dimensional analysis.) You determine which method you prefer for completing medication problems. The medication examples in the book are then worked through step-by-step based on all 3 methods. I simply study my preferred method of solving problems (ratio & proportion) and disregard the other 2 methods. Each chapter includes pre and post tests and there is a CD-ROM that contains over 500 practice problems. I find the book easy to understand, even if you are self-teaching. There are lots of practice problems and answers. This book is well worth the money!

A must have for every student nurse, nurse and nurse practitioner

Seven fascinating tales
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-01
I took many interesting courses in my early-1980s MBA program: strategy formulation, marketing, consumer behavior, and others. But the most exciting course was taught by Vijay Govindarajan. A star in higher education in India and later in the United States, VG (as we students called him) had us on the edge of our seats each and every class. Using the "case method," he embedded what he wanted us to learn inside interesting business problems, and he challenged us to solve them. My classmates and I energetically debated the cases both before and after class. The subject VG taught? Accounting.

One might not expect the world of disease and pharmaceuticals to be exciting, either, but Robert Shook does the same thing with drugs and the people of the pharmaceutical industry that VG did with accounting. Each of the seven stories in Miracle Medicines describes a health problem that afflicts people all around us, perhaps family members - maybe even you. (Like the author, I suffer from asthma.) Shook introduces us to the people of Big Pharma (as insiders call the industry) and vividly describes their struggle to develop an effective drug and bring it to market. It is not an easy process, and, after reading this book, you will understand why pharmaceuticals can be so expensive.

This book is a must read for three groups: those who want to know more about the drugs they depend upon for health, if not life itself; anyone who wants to understand the business side of the pharmaceutical industry and how drugs are developed; and readers who enjoy good short stories, for Miracle Medicines is really a collection of fascinating tales with a common theme - how people working together bring life and hope to others.

Very informative and interesting

Americans who criticize the pharmaceutical industry need to read this important book. Author Shook went behind locked doors to show us an insight on the tremendous costs and risks that these pharmaceutical corporations take. We all complain about the high costs of medicine, but Shook clearly describes the years of work and dedication by brilliant scientists as well as the many millions of dollars that these corporations front to bring a new medicine to the market place. I still may complain about the cost of my prescriptions, but I am now appreciative of the many dedicated people in the industry who made my medicines available.

Putting this in perspective

Review Date: 2007-03-21
There are two elements to any industry. Research and making money. At no point we should question the integrity of people who do everything they can to find cures for human ailments. This book tells all that. In this world of Wall Street expectations to show quick and continuous profits, some times, Pharma companies might make some bad judgment calls and those decisions cause more harm than anything. Pharma is being criticized for its practices in drug research with all the myths and lies, and at the same time pushing those companies to produce and show quick returns on stock market so that investors can make quick profit without realizing the effort that goes into the research, clinical trials and marketing of a drug. Drugs are not commodities and only that realization can put things perspective to everyone.

The Truth about Big Pharma
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-18
For years, the media has been knocking Big Pharma, and many of us are be duped into believing that the pharmaceutical companies are deceptive, devious and inhererently evil. Even the movie, "The Constant Gardener," a fictious story, has influenced public opinion to think that Big Pharma will do anything for the almighty dollar.

Robert L. Shook, a highly respected independent business writer, with no ties to the pharmaceutical industry has penned an eye-opening book that takes the reader behind the scenes of seven companies--Abbott, AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis amd Pfizer to meet the real people who dedicate their lives to finding cures for diseases. In doing so, Shook puts a face on these dedicated men and women, most of whom spend their entire careers working in their labs without ever having a new drug ending up in our medicine cabinet. After reading MIRACLE MEDICINES, my take on these individuals is that they are truly committed to humankind. They are hard-working, decent people who spend their lives to benefit others. As the author states, these are highly educated people, many who have medical degrees and Ph.Ds and could earn far more in private practice or working elsewhere. Why do they work for pharmaceutical companies? To paraphrase one chemist in the book, "I could have made more money working for a chemical company, but I wanted to work where I could do the most good for humankind."

The author does an excellent job in presenting an otherwise very complicated subject in a way that can be enjoyably read by all. This is a tribute to his writing skills. The book is very informative and interesting to read. I recommend that you buy it.

A Terrific Surprise

Review Date: 2007-05-01
I expected to be enlightened by this book, but I never expected to enjoy it. I was in for a big surprise. Author Robert L. Shook's writing is always first rate. However, in this book he has accomplished three rather remarkable things. First, instead of simply presenting well-researched and well-organized information - which could have made for a dull read - he has brought the information to life, creating seven intriguing stories about the dedicated and talented people who embody the pharmaceutical industry. I'll offer one example. Over a relatively short period of time we have come to accept AIDS as a (tragic) feature of contemporary society. I was fascinated to read about how, when, and where AIDS actually began; how it spread in this country; how physicians eventually identified HIV; and how pharmaceutical companies rushed to develop tools to diagnose and treat it. And, by the way, I found the profiles of the pharmaceutical companies quite inspiring - great things really can come from rather humble beginnings. Second, Shook takes technical information and makes it simple and easy to understand. This is no small feat. Finally, Shook helps the reader understand - yes, even appreciate - the contributions of pharmaceutical companies. In recent years, people have come to regard "Big Pharma" as they do "Big Oil" - i.e., as companies that exploit consumers who have no choice but to buy their products. Shook helps us to see pharmaceutical companies in a far more sympathetic light. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read and wants to learn about the ever-changing world in which we live.

This has been an amazing book. It describes both prescription and OTC drugs in detail without being overly technical. For years it has been an excellent reference that I have relied on. In the past few years, though, more and more of the drugs prescribed for my family have not been in the book. I have found this book to be of immense help in not only fully describing the medications in sufficient detail, but also how each medication functions within the body. Dosages, referrals to other drugs in a particular drug family, and the ability to cross-reference medications within the same book, makes it a wonderful book for reference. My current copy is very worn, and I really would like to see this same book revised from the AMA VERY VERY soon. Thanks!!

This book is awesome and certainly has paid for itself as it has saved many a call to the Pharmacist and/or the Doctor. We are however, desperately in need of a update. It seems as though, everyday, there are new drugs that are not listed. We have found some newer, similar books on the market, however, the way they are structured cannot hold a candle to this one. So.....we "patiently" await a new edition. Please---

I just want to say how much I appreciate this book! It's beautifully
written - clear, concise, no fluff, the case studies are
wonderfully presented and serve specific purposes that I (and most
of the U.S. population) can personally identify with, and the detailed
explanations of exactly how and why chiropractic adjustments,
acupuncture and cranial adjustments work to help the body correct
malfunctions are the first I've ever read! I've known in general, from personal experience, that chiropractic and acupuncture work, but until this book I've never had a concrete idea of how or why. This book is not only easy to read, but actually a page turner for those of us interested in improving our health! Amazing! I'm getting this book for friends.

This is an amazing book about health. It teaches you that you can take control of you health without taking a pill. Western medicine is so quick to give a pill to fix your symptoms, but they never take a look at what causes the symptom in the first place. Dr. Blaich does a great job with explaining alternative medicine in a way that the average person can understand. I would definitely recommend reading this book!!

Best Book on Healthcare I've Read in Years

Review Date: 2007-01-15
I recently received a copy of >Your Inner Pharmacy< and read it in two sittings, which is unusual for me. I was intrigued by the statistics he offers--that nearly a third of the U.S. population suffers from chronic illness, most of which are "lifestyle" illnesses that we could easily cure or prevent with our own lifestyle changes. Also, that the #1 health threat in the U.S. is smoking. I loved the author's clear distinction between "medicine" and "healthcare:" "The field of medicine works to prevent and treat disease. It differs from true healthcare, which promotes health an optimal function of the body." Dr. Blaich's prescriptions for health include massage, chiropractic, acupuncture and other so called alternative practices. He does a great job of explaining--scientifically, but in easy to read layperson's terms--how these health systems work, why they work, and when to use them instead of standard medicine. This book is beautifully written. The greatest thing about it is that it lays out all the information we need to take charge of our own health. This is a book which will be spotlighted on my own health reference shelf for the rest of my life; it is already dogeared and underlined at places I want to remember. I can sincerely recommend it to anyone who wants to map out a healthcare plan for their own life. Many years ago, I co-authored The Well Body Book, with Dr. Mike Samuels. It was a national bestseller and certainly shared Dr. Blaich's approach to health. Your Inner Pharmacy, I must say, is a far better book than my own, giving a very grounded and practical prescription for taking responsibility for our health. I applaud this book enthusiastically and know it will serve thousands of people who want to live healthy lives.

This is a great source to have access to (especially if you're looking up pediatric drugs at home and don't have access to UptoDate or Micromedex). It is a thorough reference. The major down-side is that it lacks an index for generic/trade names. Maybe it's there and I still haven't found it, but this is a problem when one is trying to quick reference a drug. Nevertheless, I haven't found a superior drug reference in a readily available book in pediatrics (online, I'd say Micromedex is even more complete, but in a book, this is the best). Also, for neonatal dosing, I would prefer Neofax.

I'm loving the detail and information given for each medication. It is a great resource for me. I have gone through and marked my commonly used medications for easy reference.

This book is very handy in helping you calculating pediatric doses for common over the counter products as well as prescription drugs. The more popular databases for drug at times do not include some of the common over the counter products so this is very helpful for that. It also offers a comprehensive description of the product including contraindications and cautions. It also includes very helpful appendices which deal with the not so common conditions seen in pediatrics.

This book touched me! Mr. Glover did a great job in reminding us how the Lord touches us and speaks to us everyday in small and what we think are "ordinary" ways, but if we look and listen - we will see and hear HIM. Good job, Mr. Glover!

Ken Glover's book appeals to real people -- everyday people who listen for God's voice in in their regular lives. Ken takes situations from his daily life and invites the reader to explore with him how God speaks clearly and lucidly words of instruction, encouragement, and even humor. In telling his own story, Ken enables others to hear how God speaks to them. Excellent read. Glover's book is a superb learning tool for any small group to explore together.
