I am a pharmacist and carry this book with me everywhere. It is small enough to fit in my purse and it can answer questions on dosing, indications, and much more. It is definitely a lot faster to use than the slow computers at the pharmacy!

I use this pocket guide more often than I use my palm pilot for drug doses. My lab coat is not complete without this book. Even when I am on call, I make sure I have one of my multiple copies at bedside so I can look up meds in the middle of the night. Also, I am a preceptor for PA students, and I recommend each and every one of them purchase some version of this guide (and most of them do).

It's great IF the ONLY info you need is dosing information. If you need more information like SIDE EFFECTS, METHOD OF ACTION, etc, 'Clinician's Pocket Drug Reference' from Scut Monkey is far more useful/helpful. At least it was (and is) to me during med school and now in residency.

A fast, keep in your shirt pocket reference for drug name, dosing, available dosing sizes, route of clearance and safety in pregnancy or lactation. It is tiny - a centimeter thick and shirt pocket dimensioned. Really great when a patient comes in with some oddball psych med, is found to be pregnant or you get a braincramp somewhere around your thirtieth patient of the day. I use this little gem regularly.

This book provides the reader with a tremendous amount of information regarding fungus and how various types can be utilized to, as the title says, help save the world. My spouse and I were fortunate to hear Mr. Stamets speak and were greatly impressed by the depth of his knowledge, enthusiasm for his work and his love of his subject. We were infused with a sense of hope for the future of this planet based upon what we read and heard from Mr. Stamets. If you are all all curious about mycelium, buy this book! You will not be disappointed.

Stamets is a revolutionary scientist with a beautiful mind. In the current economic and climate crisis that is facing our planet, this book provides simple solutions using mycelium to restore our environment. This book is a much like a text book but is a breeze to read. Not only does it provide practical natural solutions to environmental degradation, it also reflects a natural spiritual ethos for humanity which will promote a better human experience for all. A must read for anyone who wishes to engage and participate in saving our planet.

"Think outside the pill . . . "

Review Date: 2009-05-26
Anybody ever have a side effect from taking meds? For years I took theophyllin for asthma, until I self-diagnosed that this medicine was the cause of my rising blood pressure. My doctor at the time told me I would have to take it for the rest of my life, which probably would have been pretty short if I'd listened only to him. Instead, I researched the side effects of the drug, and sought out the opinion of another doctor. Today I am totally off it, and doin' just fine . . . no wheezing or other breathing difficulties, and my blood pressure, while still higher than what I want it to be, is 40 points lower without taking medication to lower it.

Suzy is a pharmacist who tells us to "think outside the pill," and gives us the knowledge needed to accomplish that goal. She tells us about plant extracts, vitamins, herbs, aromatherapy, and supplements. Her expose on osteoporosis (another of my hereditary risks) is the best I've seen. I didn't really care for Kevin Trudeau's book on natural cures, which totally bashed traditional medicine. However, through my career as a healthcare recruiter, I have seen the pharmaceutical reps toting in food and other treats to physician practices and ancillary hospital departments. They are not doing this to be nice, but to encourage the staff to pedal the drugs they sell. So Kevin's right about that. Suzy's book, however, give us the best of both worlds . . . natural cures and traditional medicine, and any holistic physician will tell you there's a time for both. Suzy shares her vast knowledge of natural cures and medicine, backing it up with well-reputed studies. If you're looking for solutions in a pill, this isn't the book for you. But if you like to manage your own health, with the help of well-educated professionals, this is a resource you shouldn't be without. Buy it, read it, and age well!

This book answers so many of the questions you would like to ask about maintaining your health. These are questions about managing your daily aches and pains, sniffles and coughs and other ailments that drag you down. If you ever wished you could have possible solutions to these problems, -literally at your fingertips, - then this book is for you.
And if you are taking prescription medications,- there is a whole section in the book about how some prescription drugs may deplete important vitamins and other necessary substances in your body. The author not only warns you about these possible drug side effects, she also takes it one step further - and suggests ways you can counteract these effects by using 'over the counter' herbs and vitamins from your local drug or health food store. I wish I had this book years ago.

It's easy to read and funny at times. But she makes sense. I experience alot of reactions from any prescription med, so I like the idea that I now have options. I like that she is knowledgeable in both natural and prescription products.

My biggest concern is that there is a shortage of livers now for transplants, what is going to happen in the next decade when we all need livers from blood pressure pills and statin drugs.

I make my living providing pharmaceutical sales candidates to recruiters. So, I try to read all books helping my candidates getting into pharmaceutical sales. As I'd grade the books I'm reading: Lisa Lane (B-), Lisa Alexander,(C+) Anne Clayton (B).

My candidates tell me what works and what does not work. The advice in Tom Ruff's book (grade: A-) is spot-on with what my candidates tell me works in the "real world." A good book - better than the others in substance and readability.

Well formatted, concise, a great book to carry with and reference because I refuse to carry the giant Dipiro pharmacotherapy book. My only complaint is that it seems to miss lupus completely, other than to mention it thrice as an adverse effect of a couple drugs. I was kind of hoping that it would address SLE completely, as its own chapter, or even with any of the other immune diseases. I am otherwise pleased with my purchases, as I have actually bought a total of 4, one for me and for 3 of my classmates as gifts. As far I know, they're all pleased as well.

Love love love this little book of end-less information. I have the HUGE regular DiPiro which isn't a joy to lug around. This handbook is the perfect reference for any pharmacy/med student. It covers the same topics as DiPiro 6th edition, but in a much more condensed, straight-forward way, including foundation & therapeutics. Very happy I purchased this book!

much more concise than Depiro; it's like ESPN for therapeutics, all the best highlights... but if you have a very picky professor they might bring up something specific enough that it isn't included in this book.

I bought this book hoping that it would serve as a shorter version of the larger and more detailed textbook. It turned out to do just that. I have used this book on many occasions to review the key things about certain conditions without having to read the lengthy chapters of the textbook.....this is a must have for anyone in the medical field....it provides a concise summary and key points from the bigger version.

This book is worth it for anyone wanting to learn about Pharmaceutical Sales. It covers EVERYTHING you need to know about this career. It was recommended to me by a sales rep for a major pharmaceutical company. The book is great from beginning to end. It's also very easy to understand and offers great tips. The only thing I didn't like were the sample resumes and cover letters. Nevertheless, it was still a good buy.

This book had every bit of information that I needed to get interviews, how to perform on interviews and what to bring with me. I used it to get a different type of sales position but I went to each interview well equipped and was able to score so many job offers that in the end, I got to pick and choose! There are key factors in here that will truly win you the next interview or the job offer. I am so thankful for this book!

This book is a fantastic primer for "how-to-get-a-job" in pharmaceutical sales. It is a quick read, but the information is complete and if you actually follow-through with all of the tactics that the author suggests, you have a good chance of at least getting one interview. After that it will be up to you to sell yourself and demonstrate that you actually know what you're talking about. But again, if you do what the author advises you to do, you should be able to get the business.

I had to buy this book for the Master Herbalist course i am taking. It has invaluable information in it; it covers a lot, from classification, preparation, and principles to treatment approaches, body systems, herbal actions and more! Recommended for the student studying to be an Herbalist for a good solid foundation. It is somewhat advanced, so a beginners course is recommened first. I took a "Family Herbalist" course first (1 year). I began using this book when i started the "Clinical Master Herbalist" Course (second year).

I am not a scientist, I am just a normal person interested in Herbal Medicine and creating my own tinctures, salves, etc for simple at home remedies.

I was worried this book might be a bit over the top for me, but I was pleasantly surprised! While, yes, the first few chapters delve a bit deep into the chemistry of it all, I have found that the rest of the book offers highly valuable information.

This book is broken into several sections, and I've found lots of useful information in the sections pertaining to the HOW of Herbal Medicine - it tells you precise ways of formulating different remedies. Also, the fully in depth index looks at each herb and goes into detail on it's uses and best preparations.

Overall I am so very happy with this book. It's one of my major resources and highly recommend it!

I am an EMT-B and just purchsed this book recently, it has been a invaluable tool for me in the field. With the limited phamacology we had it is great to be able to carry this book with me and reference the medications the PT's have taken. The in depth information is fantastic, drug interactions, side effects, doseages, and OD information has given me the a tool to provide better care to PT's in emergency situations. Anyone who take prescription meds or treats those who do, should have this book. If you know a Dr., Nurse, Paramedic, or an EMT, this would be a gift they will use again and again. (Hint, Hint) I guarantee they will love you for it. Now for my gripe, why do people give lower ratings due to the fact that the book is laid out differently than a previous edition? Does it make it worse? Or is it just that they have to get used to a different format? Does that really warrant a lesser rating? The layout of this book is very easy to use and understand, so 4 stars because of a change in the layout is lame and childish. C'mon give me a break, that helps no one, it's not even a legitimate gripe.

not a bad book but since i already knew most of the information in it, it wasn't as interesting as i hoped. Yeah, FDA is joke, most doctors prescribe antibiotics without even considering your illness or your medical history, sort of like free candy. Modern medicine became a sham since there are plenty of "alternative" or "natural" cures that work as well as most of medications that are being supressed. I have also had a negative reaction to antibiotics before and because of it stopped taking it altogether. Nothing new there.

A Great Expose of Legal Drugs and the FDA

Review Date: 2001-09-09
"Bitter Pills" is the real-life version of "Strong Medicine" by Arthur Hailey. With a very personal beginning resulting from his wife's near death and slow recovery from taking ONE PILL (Floxin), author Fried went on to find whether there were other victims (many), and why the drug was approved in the first place. Interviews in profusion show why the FDA has its problems. Examples are given of the tendency of drug companies to defend their drugs at any cost regardless of evidence. The end of the book contains addresses of many drug companies, organizations to whom to report adverse drug reactions, and a sample form to send to the FDA. Well thought-out advice for patients (or their helpmates) to investigate drugs are given. A number of other good books on the subject are listed.
Fried is to be congratulated for doing a very accurate job with a minimum number of accusations. I did not find a single technical error in the entire book, and I have about 12 years exploratory drug development and teaching about it as a professor of medicinal chemistry.
Even Fried may not have realized how many drugs not discussed in his book shorten life, because they are tested and accepted based on surrogate endpoints for short periods. This may not be so bad for antibiotics that are taken for two weeks, but can be very destructive for drugs intended to be taken for 20-40 years.

An Important Issue Gets Excellent Reporting

Review Date: 2001-01-13
This book begins as a personal story. One day journalist Stephen Fried was forced to rush his wife, novelist Diane Ayres, to an emergency room, when she suffered a severe seizure. She turned out to be suffering an adverse reaction to an antibiotic, Floxin, which she had been instructed to take for a minor urinary infection. "Bitter Pills" grew out of Fried's attempts to understand what had happened to his wife.

Fried, and his readers, soon discover that Diane Ayres' case was not unique, or even rare. Floxin is only one of legions of prescription drugs which can cause severe adverse reactions, which cause at least 45,000 deaths per year in the US (some estimates go as high as 200,000). It is a tribute to Fried's excellence as a reporter that he is able go beyond his dramatic personal story to give a comprehensive picture of what he calls " the hazardous world of legal drugs."

Fried reviews the history of drug regulation in the US, and ably documents the shortcomings of the current regulatory system, as well as the inordinate influence drug companies have on the process. Two of the many specific "hazards" he identifies are the desperate need for doctors to have an independent, reliable source of information on the drugs they prescribe (almost all the informatin they currently have comes from drug manufacturers), and the equally crying need for an effective system for reporting and cataloging adverse drug reactions.

I put this book down very impressed with Fried as both a reporter and a writer. He has clearly immersed himself in an important issue long enough, and deeply enough, that he has mastered it. He has then turned around to convey the complex issues involved to readers very effectively and without losing their interest. I look forward to work of similar excellence from Fried in the future.

I didn't know about Stephen Fried and "Bitter Pills," much less quinolone antibiotics, until I myself was, like Mr. Fried's wife, "Floxed," just a few weeks ago. I began my search for information on reactions to quinolones after four days of gatifloxacin (brandname Tequin) left me with tingling and weak arms and legs, difficulty swallowing and breathing, visual disturbances, headaches, dizziness, and more. I seriously thought I had a stroke or Guillain Barre syndrome or rapid onset multiple sclerosis, I was so sick.

Let me say that first, Stephen Fried's book is an excellent overview of the circumstances of adverse drug reactions to quinolone antibiotics. And with the increased visibility and use of Cipro, and the ease with which doctors dispense heavy-hitting antibiotics like Levaquin and Tequin, I'm sure I'm not going to be the last person to suffer a reaction and end up being "Floxed" and needing the information and reassurance provided by this book.

But it is also much much more. It's an expose of the pharmaceutical industry's fast and loose way of dealing with drugs, drug safety and the American public. This is not a rant -- it's an impeccably researched and detailed presentation of the intricacies involved in drug approvals and tracking of adverse reactions that exposes the limitations of the system, and the dangers those limitations present to us as patients and consumers.

As a patient advocate and spokesperson for thyroid and autoimmune disease patients, I know all too well the feeling of being held hostage to big pharmaceutical companies at the expense of my health and wellness.

Stephen Fried has finally exposed and explained -- clearly and without rancor -- how the drug industry really works, and his book, including the excellent appendix on how to contact pharmaceutical companies, report adverse reactions, protect yourself against bad drugs, and generally protect yourself as a consumer -- is must-reading for every empowered patient or health consumer.

I highly recommend this book to doctors, patients, and anyone who prescribes or takes prescription drugs.

I am another victim of a Fluoroquinolone, just like the author's wife. Take this book very seriously, because what doctors tell you is 'rare' is in fact extremely common. Levaquin (one of the fluoroquinolones) caused me to develop Fibromyalgia. For a time I had to use a walker. I was in constant pain for nearly one full year. Although the doctors say this is 'rare', three other women in my office of 30 people also developed Fibromyalgia after taking one of these pills. In my realm of family and friends, I have discovered nine others...each and every single one had a doctor telling them they did not know the cause of their pains. Each and every single one took a Fluoroquinolone pill before getting these terrible pains that never go away. No doctor will admit to it, and so therefore it goes unreported, and continues to falsely be considered a 'rare event'. There is a group of victims on yahoo that number more than 1600 from all over the world. Some have died or have family members who have died from these pills. Others are permanantly in wheel chairs or confined to bed from the pain. The pain these pills can cause is not like anything else you have ever felt. It's new and extraordinarily tortuous. I have been suffering for almost two years because of ten Levaquin pills. I am only in my 30s and before Levaquin was in great health. The information in this book is worth reading, because the Fluoroquinolones are the most prescribed antibiotic out there, and chances are you will be handed a prescription for one. You need to know the truth about these pills before you even take just one. The first pill nearly ruptured my eyes! The third pill decayed my ankle. The list goes on forever, even long after I stopped the last pill, and you can never be entirely the same after you're affected.
