Great companion book for taking the CHP Part II exam!

I took the Part II CHP exam this year. One of the questions was copied directly from this book. If you're having trouble with any solutions this book will help. It's a great companion book to have with Cember's text. If you're looking for great study materials for CHP, don't pass on this!

Insight on human and system failures
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-29
This is a quality book, easy to read considering the deep philosophical and wide conceptual ground it covers. If you have enjoyed Reason, Perrow or Dekker discussing human error then I think you will find considerable value in this book. Excellent arguments about ecological validity, root cause, Heinrich's legacy, taxonomies, distributed cognition, normal accidents, psychology of risk, and on and on. Ultimately more questions than answers, but this caused me to understand how to question a lot of the more superficial texts and methods, which may lead in interesting directions.

Not an introductory text, but an excellent addition to the field that really ties together many ideas in the safety of complex systems. Fully indexed with complete references.

"Must" reading for all museum and gallery professionals.

Review Date: 2000-04-04
Compiled by the collaborative efforts of Valerie Dorge and Sharon Jones, Building An Emergency Plan: A Guide For Museums And Other Cultural Institutions provides concise and practical "how to" information to help professionals develop site-specific plans to protect museum and art institute visitors, staff, premises, and collections in the event of an emergency. Building An Emergency Plan is an guide manual taking readers step-by-step through the process of devising an emergency plan tailored to his or her specific institution. Dorge and Jones advocate a team approach and outline the responsibilities of the director, the emergency preparedness manager, and departmental team leaders. The text is "user friendly" in format and includes "Questions to Consider" and Suggested Exercises" that aid the reader to identify and address their institution's particular needs. Building An Emergency Plan is enhanced further with emergency preparedness maters such as evacuation procedures, supply and equipment lists, and action checklists. While Building An Emergency Plan cannot avoid the occupance of disasters to the institution, it can go a long, long way toward mitigating the adverse consequences of them and facilitate the return of operations to normal as quickly as possible.

Finally, a manual I can really use on Cal/OSHA inspections.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-09
This manual is right on target. It is succinct, easy to understand and provides in-depth guidance concerning the Cal/OSHA inspection process and the employer's response if it is cited. This information is absolutely critical for safety and human resource professionals needing to adequately represent their employers during the inspection and at the informal conference with Cal/OSHA. Every worker needs the right tool for the job. This is the right tool when faced with a Cal/OSHA inspection.

Leaning from the past
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-15
The emphasis in this book is on accidents that have occurred as the result of the unforeseen effects of changes to chemical plants. The descriptions are well written, easy to read and bring out the essentials of each incident. Everyone who works in the process industries, from operator to operations director, should read the book. But what is read is soon forgotten. More will be remembered if the incidents are discussed at toolbox talks or safety meetings. Someone should ask if anything similar has happened locally, if it could happen and, if so, how we should prevent it? In an introductory Chapter Roy shows that the chemical industry has a good safety record, better than many industries that have fewer intrinsic hazards. Nevertheless, none of the incidents need have happened. There is something fundamentally wrong with our safety training. Its weakness, I think, is that it pays too much attention to principles, procedures, codes and standards and not enough to incidents. Accounts of incidents can grab our attention and stimulate us to look into the procedures and codes that will prevent them happening again. If we read only the theory and the codes we soon forget. Accident reports can demonstrate their importance and make us remember. We should start with accident reports, such as those in this book and draw the theory and codes out of them, not start with theories and codes.

Review Date: 1998-01-09
Clay's Handbook of Environmental Health is a consice guide to the career of Environmental Health, and provides an exellent tool for any Enviromental Health Officer. The handbook covers the main areas of Environmental health, and is useful as a all round guide of the career. Clay's is a good study guide, and reference guide for students studying Environmental Health ,and would be an investment to any student as it acts as a good bookcase filled to aid newly qualified students, and when not using it , it acts as a wonderful doorstop. Clay's handbook of Environmental Health is a very good basebook and is very useful to the new EHO starting out in their career.

"Hard" Math Made Enjoyable & Almost Easy
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-18
This is another very excellent and extremely readable book by Stroud & Booth. It's math at its nuts and bolts level. It's geared for engineering types like me, but also for do-it-yourselfers. With Stroud & Booth, there is no such thing as "hard" math. They are uncanny at anticipating those areas where misunderstanding can arise and answering your questions before you even ask them. Every type of problem is not only worked out in detail but is fully explained and fitted into the overall context of the material. You can actually sit down and read this book like a novel and enjoy it. Everything is developed and tied together like the characters and plot of a good novel. For instance, much time is spent bringing you up to speed on partial derivatives, complex mappings and line integrals before the study of Complex Calculus. And, the best part is that you are learning or relearning some very sophisticated math and math tools without pain or boredom. Who would have thought that a former math-hater like me could actually enjoy doing not just line integrals, but Schwarz-Christoffel transformations and other neat stuff.

This book gets through the whole subject nicely. It's concise, precise and yet panoramic. And, once you have mastered Stroud & Booth. you will feel equipped to continue your studies in more traditional texts as I do. The kind that have 800 to 1200 pages of depth and detail on the subject with lots of theory and proofs.

ENJOY!
