Good for both the newcomer and the experienced reader of buddhism. I have read this book three times, and every time is a new experience that creates an amazing aura of mindful positivity.
It is not a book of religion but it is the book about positivity.
I would reccomend it for everyone.
It has changed my life.

A delight to read. Practical and multidimensional.

I love this book. It brings the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism into everyday life--whether you call yourself a Buddhist or not. It shows how you can use healing attitudes and imagery. Simple, nondogmatic, loving, and practical.

This is an absolutely wonderful book.

Before I read this book, I was very intimidated by the world of organic products. Though I knew there would be tremendous health benefits, I still feared the expense and obtainability. Wendimere, however, proves to the reader just how accessible AND DELICIOUS health food can be. She's done her homework and has documented her delicious finds from all over the country. Also, if you want to know where in America to find some of the best entertainment, clothes, cleaning products and more -- all while promoting the health of the environment -- read this book!

Everyone can learn something from this!!

I found many helpful hints from the book. I would especially recommend doing the Ezekiel bread as an aid to losing weight. And the offering of snackes makes this a reasonable diet without the feeling of a diet with lettuce and celery. This is a good and valuable read!

The Health Chic Guide: Hip, Fun & Delicious Living
Love this fun, hip book!! I am in the natural health care business and just recommended this book to a group of 250 people. It is straight forward and direct in it's approach to making simple changes in ones lifestyle to improve health. I am planning to use this as a resource guide book for great spas, organic companies, and resturants I hope to travel to.
Reilly, also writes about her travels last year with her husband and pets in a Airstream RV in search of fun and natural resturants, corporations, and adventures.
It is fun summer reading for the mind and body!

As someone who loves food and yet finds many of them toxic to her system and also is a "tree hugger" to some extent, this book was so encouraging! For two people to step out into this big vast world and try to make a difference and continue to live the healthy lifestyle they believe in makes me feel that I might be able to make a difference as well. I also love their compassion and understanding for individuals that still have a long way to go (like myself). They understand how difficult these choices are for us as the world (legislation, big business dollars etc.) continues to work against us without being fanatical about it. Lots of fun to read. Very uplifting.

Hope there is another book with more adventures and tips in the near future!

Alright, I'll confess: I haven't read the book. However, I HAVE taken an english composition class taught by Deborah Straw, and let me tell you, she's a wonderful educator and very passionate about animals. I still go to her for literary advice.

Just a little piece of info about the author that might make you feel good about buying the book...

an invaluable resource for animal lovers

The Healthy Pet Manual is a revised and expanded edition of Straw's already excellent earlier
book, Why Is Cancer Killing Our Pets? Cancer is the number one killer of most domestic
animals, dogs being the most vulnerable to this disease. A thorough researcher who was highly
motivated by the loss of four of her own dogs to cancer, Straw has made a careful study of the
environmental, dietary, and iatrogenic (vaccine-related) causes of this modern scourge. In this
well organized and beautifully written book she covers the bases with a sensible blend of
conventional and alternative approaches to the prevention and treatment of the disease.

As a person whose life has been immeasurably enriched by a series of remarkable dogs and who
finds it difficult to deal with their mortality, I found The Healthy Pet Manual to be full of
practical information that helps me to face my dog's future with greater confidence. This book is
an invaluable resource for anyone who loves and lives with animals. Two paws up!

It is a sad fact that many pets will succumb to some kind of cancer in their lifetime. It is also a fact that some veterinarians may lack the time, knowledge, and/or communication skills to answer owners' questions about this disease, its treatment, and prevention. This well-written and well-researched book helps fill that gap by providing two valuable kinds of information. First, it reviews some of the latest information about cancer in animals. Second, the extensive notes at the end of the book provide numerous references for those who would like to explore certain subjects in more detail. This combination results in a quality guide to the complex world of animal cancer.

Highly recommended for anyone concerned about their dog's health. Information that is user friendly and not easily available from any other source. There is a particularly good chapter on pain management - which is a field vets are only now beginning to understand. Deborah Straws writes with compassion from a pet owner's point of view - making the latest scientific and pet-related environmental issues easily accessible. An essential reference book for concerned pet owners.

When author Deborah Straw lost four animals to cancer, she became frustrated enough about the lack of information about the disease to investigate - and The Healthy Pet Manual: A Guide To The Prevention And Treatment Of Cancer is the result. Pet owners may not realize cancer is the number one killer of most domestic animals: this revised, expanded edition of Why Is Cancer Killing Our Pets includes the latest research and preventative measures owners can take, from watching food to understanding how vaccines may influence cancer developments in pets. This book let me finally understand where my doctor was coming from. I read the book three times, I found it so useful. Being able to understand both the potential dangers that lie ahead and how to avoid them has made me a stronger person as I confront this disease. I have read several other books on hepatitis C, and I liked this one the best. I really liked learning about the PEGYLATED Interferons as well as the safe use of alternative antioxidant treatments along with the ones my doctor is prescribing. This book seems really up to date. I am pumped about it.

I bought this book when it came out in 1996. I thought it would be the first of many to follow and it is still the only one own. A lot of information is out on the internet now, but I always come back to this book and just double check what I find. It is not a big book and does not contain everything, but it is a great book that contains a lot. Yes, the layout is great and information is so easy to find. I love the recipes! I have also varied some of the ingrediants with the other herbs she talks about that have the same healing properties and had great results.

I have gone back to this book over and over, using the tinctures or teas as needed. Keville gives excellent explanations regarding different ailments, then suggests remedies, often telling a short story about someone who used the remedies. I have given copies of this book to three different family members and even took my copy along on a month long trip. As with Dr. James A. Duke's books, I trust the advice in Keville's books.

Simply amazing for the price!!!

******This is a review of the paperback version*******

It's amazing that I can go out and buy several $20+ 'recommended' books, and the 5-8 dollar paperbacks end up being the best. Such is the case with Kathi Keville's Herbs for Health and Healing. While not an herbal that is the end all of every herbal out there, it's extremely informative, enlightening, easily digestible, and chocked full of useful information.

The author genuinely has a love of herbs and a belief in their performance; for a change we have an herbalist who really is one, and not just trying to cash in on the latest craze. This little gem is broken down cleverly, with each section as exciting as the last.

The introduction alone is useful, highlighting some of the common reasons to use herbs and natural remedies; she lists facts that are eye openers and refreshing.

Why Use Herbs? further demonstrates her reasoning, listing the troubles of combating side effects, the benefits of herbs, how they work, why they do, and more.

The second, Herbal Preparation, briefly touches upon various way to use herbal remedies and make your own. It's of course clear to see this should be included, and included in this order. She mentions main herbal preparations, with some brief illustrations. There is not outright detail, but it's clear enough to get the basic idea.

The third section, Herbal Medicine, breaks down the larger sections into various body systems, beginning with the Brain and nervous system, ending with The skin. Each system is introduced with the roles it plays, things that can go wrong, and why they do. From here on she lists major complaints, symptoms and causes, backs up the herbs recommended with various studies, then backs up further with personal experience, and THEN usually has a basic formula to recommend. Excellent quick resource for a variety of maladies, clearly and confidently written.

For part 3 we have Living with Herbal Wisdom. Here she devotes an entire chapter to Men's Health, then Women's, then Childrens. Everything from hormones and infertility, to colic, to male baldness is touched upon. The section for children is an especially welcome entry; teeting, earaches, sugar blues, you name it.

And....this isn't all. Chapter 14 lists Herbal first aid, helping you establish a 'first aid kit' , why the herbs are recommended, how to use them, etc. Here she goes into detail on poison oak, ivy, bug bites, stings, mosquito repellants, and sunburns.

Chapter 15, aptly titled Cautions and Considerations, warns about using things safely. Topics include essential oils, identification, contamination, endangered herbs, and rare reactions. 16 dives briefly into the huge pool of aromatherapy, something that is obviously a first love for Kathi. In fact, she has other books on this subject alone. Techniques and measurements are all laid out. The list keeps growing - chapter 17 brushes upon Skin Care - including hair of course. Homemade beauty recipes, as well as combating skin issues and problems - are mentioned. Great extra! Finally, chapter 18 is about cooking for health - delicious recipes are given for soups, oils, vinegar, spices, pestos, veggies, hot sauces, homemade coffees, ending with candies such as ginger and horehound drops.

I repeat, sometimes the more expensive, bigger, prettier book is skimpier. From skin and cosmetics to cooking to first aid to body conditions, it's all here. It's not the most advanced herbal out there but it's not too basic for those with experience. Beginners will easily understand, while those who know their stuff will keep learning as the page turns. At this price, it's a bargain, a steal, almost a sin if not purchased.

Essential reference any herbalist must have!

A review for those who aren't midwifes...
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-22
This is a wonderful text. Unfortunately it is in a soft cover, unlike vol. 2 which is hard cover, but that aside, it is wonderful.

I am a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home birth. Because of various problems I've also ended up without prenatal care so this volume has proven invaluable to me!! It is clear and exhaustive. This volume has a lot of information directed exclusively for midwives (philosophy of midwivery, how to set up a practice, how to work with different kinds of women, initiating contact and establishing care, etc.), but there is plenty of information useful to "do-it-yourself" prenatal care. It covers what to do during a prenatal exam during each trimester, special circumstances, problems that can occur during pregnancy and information on conditions that might preexist pregnancy.

There is a good section that explains anatomy and physiology that you need to know and I found it easy for me, as a non-medical/non-scientific person, to understand. The index is very thorough.

If you are buying the second volume and aren't sure you should get this one I would recommend that you do get this one because the second volume says that you should review the anatomy and physiology covered in the first volume since it doesn't repeat it and the foundation is essential to understanding the information in the second volume. (If you have medical/midwivery training it may not be so necessary, but then you might appreciate the text for other reasons).

Overall I'd say that if you plan an unattended birth and want to be as informed and safe as possible it is very worthwhile to purchase this volume as well as the second volume and invaluable if you are doing your own prenatal care. If nothing else it can give guidance on when you need to seek a healthcare professional. If you have an attendant then it may only be useful to you if you like to know everything and are willing to pay this much. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it to the non-midwife.

Oh, don't let the term "Holistic" throw you. It gives in-depth medical information as well as giving some alternative medicine information. My husband is a bio-chemist researcher and has worked as a nurse; he is very pleased with the scientific information in this volume and the next.

Holistic Midwifery, Vol I-Anne Frye

Review Date: 2006-11-12
I have known Anne Frye as part of the midwifery community here in Oregon since 1992. I first met her at a midwifery conference where she gave the most thorough presentation of prenatal nutrition I'd ever had in the 4 years, at that point, that I had been learning midwifery. Her clear, easy to understand, but incredibly detailed explanations about such things as how the pregnant woman's different blood volume and makeup affects iron levels, protein needs, and commonly misunderstood conditions known as pre-eclampsia and "prenatal diabetes" still stick with me to this day. From what I recall at the time, Anne wrote this series in response to the lack of a comprehensive textbook that focused specifically on midwifery. Until that time, midwives all over used a couple of standard medical texts for obstetrics, one that focused on British nurse-midwifery (a very different standard, though useful), and a combination of books on more focused topics written by midwives. This book provides enough information that, if a midwife had only this text, she would be able to offer excellent prenatal care.

I was one of the first to receive this book, having placed my order directly with her prior to it's first printing. I have referred to it countless times, as I am about to do again for a Master's level counseling course I am taking. Anne Frye draws from many sources, both modern scientific/medical and ancient health practices, to tell, in completion, everything you need to know to adequately be "with woman" in childbearing. The drawings in this book are also beautiful, amazingly done by an artist friend of hers who took great care to ensure their accuracy.
If you are interested in assisting women in their childbearing year, you MUST have and use this book.

If I had to choose one book on pregnancy and birth from my bookshelf (a very hard pick!), this would be the one. Although not aimed at the general public, women planning a natural birth would find authoritative and invaluable information in this book. Midwife Anne Frye uses her own experience and midwifery wisdom as well as a thorough but critical look at the medical research in the subjects that she addresses. She brings, to my mind, the best of medical research with a holistic and gentle approach. I'm looking forward to Volume 2!

The one book every midwife should NOT be without!

If you bought no other books on midwifery, Anne Frye's books would be the ones you should have. Holistic Midwifery, Volume I is one of the books that I am constantly refering back to in my studies and in dealing with clients. It is worth its weight in gold. I just received the second volume of this set and am ecstatic to have it. I have gotten so much use and learned so much out of Volume one that I know that Volume II will be the same way. Holistic Midwifery is also a required text at most (if not all) CPM midwifery schools in America. I know that I enjoyed completing the requirement for Ancient Art Midwifery Institute in answering the questions relating to and reading/taking notes from Volume I of Holistic Midwifery. In a nutshell, if you don't have it, get it!

This book is vital for doulas, childbirth educators, and midwives!

The reason is simple: this book is both useful as a reference book and as an actual study book. As childbirth professionals, we need to understand what is happening to our clients at all times. On occasion, we need to turn to a reference text to learn what we need to know.

This is a book that answers questions and provides information to people who need reference material at the finger tips. This is one book that does not leave my desk top to be causally loaned out!

From babies to the elderly Penelope Ody addresses the seven stages of life and how to care for ourselves at each one. Her emphasis is on taking charge of one's own day to day health. She teaches us how to make and use syrups, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, tonic wines, capsules, compresses, poultices, hot and cold infused oils, massage oils, ointments, creams, lotions, emulsions, eyewashes, mouthwashes and more. There are full color photos of how she makes these as well as of the plants she uses. There is a remedies for common aliments section that lists the herbs used for specific problems and which way of using it is preferable. I am sure when Shakespeare wrote of the seven ages of man he had no idea how stressful life would be in the 21st century and how necessary health maintenance would be. Penelope Ody has it figured out though. Thank Goodness.

As one begins to learn the homeopathic methodology, repertorising is a difficult, if not ominous endeavor. This book helps to sort out the many nuances of old, and clarify much of the "older" jargon. This puts the learning curve back in the present! I have utilized this book extensively in my studies with the British Institute of Homeopathy. I recommend it highly!

Most homeopathic books aimed at the layperson focus on acute prescribing in homeopathy. Even though this book is aimed at beginning homeopaths, it is accessible and understandable to the layperson, and can help to understand constitutional prescribing. It will enable you to work with your homeopath to find the similimum for you and your family members (because you understand what he/she is trying to accomplish and you can contribute meaningfully) .

I have only worked through the first two chapters of the book, and I can't believe how much I have learnt.

Excellent book for the novice homeopathic practitioner

This is the kind of book I've been looking for for ages! It explains to the novice homeopath just how to begin taking a case and using the Repertory in practical terms. Wonderful! It also includes simple history-taking forms & templates. I highly recommend this book!

What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
What I like most in this book is the emphasis on clinical signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hormonal imbalance rather than the usual relying on lab test only.

The author is from the fourth generation in a family of physician specializing in hormones well before the term "Endocrinology" had been invented. His great-grandfather, Dr. Eugene Hertoghe has given his name to the "Sign of Hertoghe", the shorter eyebrows of people with hypothyroidy and his father, Dr. Jacques Hertoghe has introduced the now widely used 24 hours thyroid hormone test. The test much better correlates with the signs, symptoms and complaints of thyroid hormone utilization than the usual thyroid hormone blood tests.
With his seminars and publications the author is well in line with the tradition of his family.
This book is a major contribution to our understanding of hormonal processes. I recommend this book to every person (inclusive physicians) interested in learning more about the way hormones affect us in all the aspects of our existence.

I love how this book was written. Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.

He talks about what can happen to our bodies when our hormones are not balanced, and over the long-term, can lead to diseases.

The book is broken down into 4 major areas:
1. Hormones
2. Body
3. Mind
4. Hormone Solution

In Chapter 2 (which is a part of #1), he gives a quiz (Part I) on each of the 15 hormones he talks about in his book and the symptoms of deficiency. The hormones would be ACTH, Aldosterone, Calcitonin, Cortisol, DHEA, EPO, Estrogen, Growth Hormone, Insulin, Melatonin, Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormones, and Vasopressin.

In Part II of the quiz, he quizzes your Energy, Sex, Sleep, Skin/Hair, Weight Control, Stress, Mood, Circulation (Heart & STroke), Joints, Bones, and Immune System.

It takes a bit to complete the full quiz, but well worth it. With the Part II stuff, he goes into further details about each of these.

In each of those sections, he'll talk about detecting & decoding one's deficiencies, how to eat to heal, the nutrients needed, supplementation, scientific evidence/studies, and concludes with summary of each of the 15 hormones that may impact that particular issue (i.e., weight issue).

For the Hormone Solution, he breaks this down into:
1. The hormone
2. Treatment
3. Recommended dosage & frequency
4. What they may be associated to in terms of impact with other hormones.

He has a couple pages for resources and 59 pages of references. WOW!!!

This book was very informative and the first book I read on hormones. I've since read several other books, but still like this one the best.

A good compliment to this book is Natural Hormone Balance for Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss, who is a ob-gyn in Beverly Hills. He covers some other things Dr. Hertoghe doesn't.

Something I'd like to mention is I did go get a 24-hr urine analysis that looked at a number of the hormones mentioned in this book. His quiz made it fairly easy for me to have my doctor test for certain things and they were fairly close to being correct.

My naturopath has now given me some BIHs to help me rebalance those hormones I was deficient in. Am feeling so much better and this was about 3.5 weeks ago.

Comprehensive. Includes suggestions for communication with your doctor to request appropriate labs and prescriptions for bioidentical hormones to improve health, longevity and well being. Also includes dietary modifications to support a bioidentical hormone replacement protocol. Written by the top endocrinologist in the world. Very insightful, cutting edge knowledge.

A must have reference book - would be lost without it!

This book was required reading from an endocrinologist I was seeing and I'm so very glad that I read it cover to cover. I learned SO much about my hormone issues and was able to help figure out what was going on with my husband and his hormone issues. It made the remainder of his life bearable. I keep this book for reference and use it often. I bought and gave one to my primary care doctor and he said it has enlightened him on hormone issues with patients. We are so blessed that Dr. Thierry Hertoghe chose to share his knowledge with us to help as many people as possible to feel better and have quality of life. Best hormone book I have ever read!!

Learning about hormonal deficienties

This book is clearly written. The author makes it possible for everyone to get a clue about which hormones might be missing in his/her body before visiting a health professional. Many health issues are covered with the specific hormonal deficienties. I found it very clarifying and it brought me a step forwards in my search for my lost health. I have read also the books of John R. Lee. The book of Thierry Hertoghe gives not so much information about what one can do self in comparison with the books of Lee on female issues.
in the meantime i go to his sister dr.Therese Hertoge for treatment, and i got much better.

About 10 years ago, I became very sick and thought I was going to die. I took several diagnostic tests which came out negative. So I decided that I will help myself and did some research. By some stroke of luck or miracle, I received a brochure of this book in the mail so being desperate, I bought it and tried what was suggested for my symptoms. Well, I did get back to health. My symptoms disappeared. Thanks a million Dr. Wagner. I think I will buy another copy of this book since mine has become very worn out due to use.

I would like to know where to obtain a purtaneous distcotectomy as outlined on page 236 by Dr Wagner, to enable me to write a review.
Would it be possible for me to talk to him either through yourselves or myself?

I have read the book and am very impressed with Dr. Wagner's belief and success in alternative healing. I live in Australia and would be most grateful if I could have an address to write to Dr. Wagner about a problem that is not covered in his book. Could you please e-mail a contact address, if possible. Many, many thanks.

I purchased "How To Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" several years ago, and I am convinced the book has saved me thousands of dollars in medical bills. Wagner's book helps you to diagnose common physical ailments, and he gives natural solutions for healing. He gives precise descriptions of problems like kidney stones, gallstones, high blood pressure, cholesterol control, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, gout, tinnitis, yeast infections, ulcers, and diabetes. I have read some sections of his book several times, and I am convinced that I have avoided/cured gallstones, kidney stones, gout, and ulcers by following his advice. I highly recommend this book to everyone. (jsoverton@excite.com)

Three years ago I read "How to Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" and was so impressed with it that I contacted the publisher to find out where Dr. Wagner was located. Several days later he called me directly and asked how he could be of help. Since then Dr. Wagner has become our family doctor, and we have come to appreciate his straightforwardness in telling his patients to ask questions, to become educated in making informed decisions, and finally, to "take control" of their own health. I keep his book with me at all times and treat it as my "medical bible". Each chapter is extremely informative and I have used many of them to help family and friends with common sense solutions to their medical problems. Easy to read, its format offers the layperson a basic understanding of his/her ailment, what causes it, the conventional treatment, problems associated with that treatment, and then a "no nonsense" approach to alternative remedies that include a good nutritional program, vitamin and supplement support, amino acids, herbs, adjunctive remedies, and exercise regimens. Dr. Wagner is located in Philadelphia, PA. He has a radio program, "The Dr. Wagner Health Show" which airs on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on 1540am. He has written another book, "How to Stay Out of the Hospital" which addresses the problems of orthodox medicine and offers many case histories. With Dr. Wagner's permission, I am including his office number for those readers who need to contact him: (215) 455-0717.
