Anne Harrington's book is a wonderful account of how we humans keep trying to figure ourselves out, and to define, "what it means to be human." It's a fascinating historical account that everyone should read.

Well documented and fair book. The author does a lot to balance both sides of the issue. Having had 6 orthopedic surgeries in the last two years following an accident, I have managed better with meditation than anything the doctors could offer me. This book and I agree that there are other options out there, and no universal perfect fit, but if you are dissatisfied with care you are getting it is your responsibility to quit complaining and explore your options. It is your body and your life, after all.

Anne Harrington has written a comprehensive account of the impact of the healing approaches outside mainstream medicine. Call it mind-body, call it new age, it is an approach that is as old as the Bible with the cures of Jesus. It is not new to our society. Her history traces the mind-body connection stretching from Bibical era to our own, with the bulk of the book focusing on the Age of Enlightenment forward. She has written this definitive history in an unbias and readable fashion .

Whenever a first-class scholar, like this one, writes a careful, data-based book, which is at the same time accessible to the intelligent lay person, we must be grateful.
This volume tells us much of the history, in the United States, of the various mind-over-body schemes: psychoanalysis, Transcendental Meditation, bio-feedback, Christian Science, and others. Nobody interested in modern American history can afford to ignore this story.
But I also found the book profoundly confusing. The author wants to tell us about these movements and how they were received by the public, but she has little interest, it seems, in the truth value behind the claims of these popular movements. Does bio-feedback, for instance, really help in reducing stress ? For that matter, is there such a thing as "stress" in the sense that the proponents of these movements have in mind ? Truth or untruth are things that hold little interest for this author.
Harrington generally tells the story of the beginnings of these movements as a series of successes, and then, for some reason, time and again, "things begin to unravel," as she has to state time and again. With all her sympathies for "mind-over-body," sympathies that dominate her "narratives" (a favorite phrase of hers), it turns out, generally, and in stark contrast to her enthusiasms, that things don't work out after all, and it would seem -- though she never says this -- that it's probably best to be cynical about the whole lot of these movements.

I love this book! Anne Harrington offers an insightful and beautifully written history of human effort at healing. She has identified six narratives, which have deep cultural roots, as well as ties to science. These narratives are sometimes intertwined with scientific endeavors, and sometimes they survive simply as part of the popular culture. Anyone interested in mind-body healing will value The Cure Within.

Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

This was my reference of choice when I was an intern at a busy major children's hospital. It's comprehensive, not too heavy to lug around, gives you the important details and gives you references as to where to go next for further reading. It's not always enough information when it comes to specific cases. I usually went to UpToDate, PedsinReview or lit searches at that point. I think this is a solid book to have early in your career because it lets you cover the most relevant material in a readable manner. As a second year, I don't go back to Currents as much and mostly go with articles.

this is a well-written, decent source of information that I feel is geared more for medical students than residents. Its purpose is to familiarize the reader with common and well-known conditions and basic treatment definitions, along with basic epidemiology. It is not a one-stop reference for diseases, however, in that it will not go into detail regarding treatment including dosages and often time course of treatment; discussion of pathophysiology is quite limited. it certainly is unnecessary for a medical student to know whether to treat with high-dose vs. regular dose antibiotics, or whether single vs. double coverage for a given infection is more appropriate. but it would be much more helpful to your resident or attending to have such information in a reference book.
this book is an easy read; however, if you are in residency or beyond, i'd humbly suggest skipping this book and going for something along the lines of a Nelson's Textbook of Peidatrics. but if you're looking for a basic definition of diseases, then this book is certainly sufficient.

Designed by experts, and with care; "Current Pediatric Diagnosis & Treatment" is one book that both paediatricians and GPs know too well. It covered every aspect of child's health-care in a way that would arouse envy in other texts. Its superior methodology is one factor that has kept its name above others. The authors of this book deserve tons of commendations. They did a fantastic job. Every chapter of the book speaks for them!
Its illustrations are utterly comprehensive; and the frequency with which its information is updated ensure that only the most current advances in paediatrics are included.
Very welcomed! Books of this quality would ensure that doctors (and medics) will always live upto their respective billings.

I have to say that so far this book has met my expectations. The chapters are very well organized and written, so you can skip from front to back and just go directly to the chapter of your interest. Of course, reading it in an orderly fashion would be most beneficial. The pictures and diagrams are beautiful. The first few chapters mostly describe the north american epidemiological situation regarding dental tooth loss. I would have preferred the book to have a more international approach in that sense. Regardless of that, I highly recommend this book to any dentist that performs oral rehabilitation or implant surgery. Even though I specialize in oral surgery, I perform prosthetic dentistry quite often, and this book has been very helpful in the short time I have owned it.

This book is exceptional in that the author, Jane Alexander, has experienced all the different treatments for herself. This makes it much safer for anyone to use than most books of this genre. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wishes to get their health together. Mental, physical and spiritual balance can be achieved through following one of several detox plans offered by Jane Alexander in this excellent and highly readable book.

Uses logic to help you understand how simple it really is to detox. I have since tried to read other detox books, but can't finish them. Basically, she saves you from reading 10 sub-par detox books. I didn't lose much weight, but my clothes now fit me the way they were meant to fit, not just camoflauging problems. Thanks to her dietary suggestions, mental exercises, and at home spa-like treatments, I do feel like I've shed alot of negativity, emotional, and environmental toxins that had built up in my body. Other books don't treat you to the "total" package.

I've read so much hype about detoxing that it was really refreshing to read this book. It's clear, concise and authoritative. The author obviously knows exactly what she's talking about and doesn't throw in any trendy gimmicks or ridiculous claims. I followed her one-month plan and can honestly say I have never felt better in my life (at least not since I was a kid!!). It goes beyond the mere physical too but encourages you to look at your whole life - emotionally as well as physically. I de-cluttered and that made a huge difference. Well worth reading - and following!!

Julie makes a wonderful point in the title of her book. She was determined to NOT allow a disease like diabetes define her and she's a remarkable person filled with altruism, charisma, and positivity because of it!
Her observation that controlling diabetes is a falsehood is 100% accurate. You cannot control a disease that is, by definition, uncontrollable. She has succeeded in goal to educate people with diabetes on how they can live life, uninterrupted, despite the challenges diabetes will throw at them.
Thanks a million, Julie!!

This book was given to me by my oncologist when I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, however, I didn't really get into it until the cancer metatisized in 2007. I wish I had read it before...it is informative and inspirational without being "preachy". You can read the sections as you wish and take with you what you want. I'm still in treatment but I read something from it almost every day...my favorite is "This Too Shall Pass".

This book is very helpful in navigating the minefield of cancer. I wish I had seen it earlier. The advice and insight
of a knowledgable physician in the same predicament was clear,
relevant, sensitive, and practical. The dominant format is question and answer so you can quickly access and address personal concerns first. It is also extremely helpful in knowing what to ask the oncologists and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment process. I would highly recommend this book to any new cancer patient, but it is also very appropriate for cancer survivors and care givers.

diagnosed with cancer in March 2001 - having no prior experience or knowledge of what cancer was about. This is the book to get to arm you with enough information that you can help yourself.

Well, here's something you CAN do for a friend who's just learned that he or she has cancer: Buy this book! It's got the most important, practical information that a new cancer patient needs first. Also, it's hopeful and encouraging yet absolutely reliable, medically speaking -- a rare combination among "popular" cancer literature.

I read the book as part of the Hubbard Dianetics Course.
I larned a lot, and did some auditing as well. I also got auditing, which helped tremendously.
The people who attack it, often have commited some crimes, that they are afraid someone will find out about, or dont want people to get better, and do well in life.
This book will give you valuble insight into how these people tick, and your own fears, and ups and downs in life.
Stress is not a treatable malady with dangerous drugs. The drugs will do more harm then good.
You can find out what causes stress, and do away with it, without harming yourself, or others around you.
Make sure you clear any misunderstood words, or read the booklet "Technology of Study" by L.Ron Hubbard. Also extremly helpfull, and essential knowledge you can learn about

I liked the anonymous psychiatrist from Sydney as he fell for the majority of the false ideas regarding Dianetics. Really sorry he did not listen to this CD. There is also a great DVD out that further explains what is the reactive mind and how handling this will improve one's life. Listen to this CD and buy the DVD on Amazon.com :)

I was amazed by the information in this CD. Finally, I found information about the human mind that actually makes sense.
The theory behind it is logical, the process is simple to learn, and the results DO work.
I used what I learned from this with my two sons, and it was amazing. They really enjoyed it, and I notice that they are happier since the Dianetic processing.
I recommend this to EVERYONE.

All I can say is WOW! This book is unbelievable, and the information in it changed how I think about everything, and how I react.
Since learning about the reactive mind, I can see it instantly in others, and myself. When people get angry, and spew from their mouth things they can't even remember afterwards because it is a 'tape from their mind' from a similar situation that invoked it, this was brilliant. I now watch myself, and correct it much quicker than ever before, and as a result has given me a more peaceful existence. I ran the drills with my husband, and I totally got how it worked, and a major win. We couldn't believe how easy it was to follow the steps, and actually help yourself and others to detect issues, and clear them.
If you want an easy to follow guide that you and a friend or loved one can do to help each other get stronger, healthier, and become a better person, it will be the best money you have ever spent.
Enjoy the journey, I know I am now.

The best thing about this dictionary, apart from its clear definitions, is the wealth of drawings - not only of anatomical parts but also of many physiological and biochemical processes. I love browsing through the dictionary and looking at the drawings - more terms stay in mind when you see their pictorial representations.

Dr. Murray really has written a "whole body" book. By coming from the naturopathic viewpoint, he has made achieving and maintaining optimum health an obtainable goal without a lot of side-effect inducing prescriptions. He does not just list a series of steps to follow, but makes the reader a participant and advocate for his or her own health by providing explanations as to why the procedures work. He also provides rating scales so that the reader can prioritize the steps by personal need. If I can only have one health book, this is the one.

This is another excellent book by Dr. Murray. I highly recommend any of Dr. Michael Murray's books--he is an acclaimed naturopath who provides excellent insight into the workings of the human body. This book itself is very straightforward, well organized and contains loads of information. Well done!
One of the best I've ever read!

What can I say? Dr. Michael Murray is still one of the very best and most instructive of all Naturopaths I've ever seen live at health conventions. His books are pure gems of how to self-diagnose and heal yourself of all kinds of difficult health problems, including Phase I and Phase II detoxification problems in the liver...explained in great detail, actually. I loved Total Body Tune-Up because I already do a bit of health counseling and a LOT of study of natural health and healing. Dr. Murray filled in some blanks for me regarding some of the mystery health problems.
I am still working on healing the last 15-20% of a damaged immune system/environmental illness....so anything that can knock off the last few stubborn problems is WONDERFUL news to me. :-) There are only two things I do not intend to be without from now on: my beloved (organic, therapeutic) Young Living Essential Oils and natural healing advice from Dr. Michael Murray!
Since first reading this book about 7 weeks ago, I have purchased another 3 copies and given them as gifts. "Total Body Tune-Up" THAT significant of a book.:-)
Dr. Murray, please come back to the Syracuse area.. We want to hear you speak AGAIN!
