outstanding introduction to the science of exerciseReview Date: 2008-05-23
This book is the opposite of all those endless magazine and internet exercise tips. The authors have themselves tested and compiled the best experimentally tested findings on the causes and mechanics of exercise and the human body. Why does muscle get stronger? Can you get faster? How? Why?
Book is long and can be a bit technical. It is a textbook on exercise. It is not the end of the topic. But if you want to look at and learn about sports from the perspective of tested results, written by maybe the best teachers and minds in the field: get this book. Maximum recommend.
Very good reference materialReview Date: 2001-06-19
It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)
Good and interesting Review Date: 2007-06-08
It is a technical book with good illustrations and pictures. I would grade it as an intermediate level material. You can read this as a beginner but it would be a slow read as you'd have to get a understanding of all the concepts...It is like reading an upgraded version of college biology - first time it's a lot of studying, the second time you'll review and pic up on new little details...
Review not from an exercise physiologist.Review Date: 2007-01-30
I consider reading this book better than buying thousands of sport/fitness magazines because the last one are not, in general, scientifically founded and full of wrong (market driven an potentially dangerous for your health) information. Of course, if you are not a exercise physiologist or do not have an undergraduate degree in correlated area you can have some difficult to cope with the book, but a basic knowledge in chemistry and biology can help to overcome most of them and learn the foundations.
Additionally, the book offers hundreds of references which can be helpful for further reading.

Wisdom beyond Its ScopeReview Date: 2006-12-28
Cole Giller, a board-certified neurosurgeon and associate professor, draws on his experience of guiding his patients through this difficult maze to offer guidance to anyone facing an important medical decision. In doing so, he has penned a book of wisdom that transcends its stated purpose.
Giller's six steps for making medical decisions are applicable to anyone faced with a bewildering array of choices. Simply put, they are:
1. Identify your options.
2. Identify the trade-offs.
3. Find the supporting data.
4. Be skeptical of the data.
5. Pay attention to your beliefs.
6. Contemplate the decision's meaning.
This book is a treasure. Giller weaves his experience into a well-written, easily-understood and widely-applicable approach to dealing with complicated decisions. While the book is a compassionate guide for individuals facing a medical challenge, it also offers sound guidance for decision-makers in any field.
Knowledge may be power, as the old saw says. But all too often in this age of information explosion, it is not enough to overcome the decision crisis. Giller's model provides a practical for living with the decision's results.
Why you NEED this book Review Date: 2004-08-28
1. Medical decisions are NOT what they used to be and patients need to be informed in order to make the right decision.
2. The book outlines the six major steps necessary to make the right decision - from identifying your options to interpreting numbers, etc
3. This book includes a guide to the right reference books and tips on reading and interpreting relevant medical articles, newsletters, television and even advertisements.
4. It includes a guide to the internet as well as suggested Web sites. There are also helpful tips for navigating PubMed and other medical websites.
5. Included are valuable strategies for finding the right medical information and interpreting the often confusing numbers and percentages included in medical tests and other medical procedures.
6. Finally, this book looks at ALL the various aspects of medical treatment, from medical insurance to managing doctors.
I've never seen another book like it and think it'd be invaluable for any patient - or family of one.

Use The Power of Your Mind Review Date: 2008-06-24
Dr. Martin Rossman, M.D., begins this CD with an explanation of the benefits of guided imagery. He explains that research shows that those who use guided imagery prior to surgery have better outcomes, faster healing, and even less loss of blood than those who do not use these methods.
In soothing tones, he then presents 3 exercises (about 25 minutes each) that will help you:
1) Prepare for a successful surgery
2) Prepare on the day of surgery
3) Heal well after surgery.
Surgery is stressful on the body and the psyche. This relaxing CD can help you use the power of your mind to visualize healing and a good outcome. And what we can imagine, we can often produce.

The Best Thing Since Buggars!Review Date: 2005-01-01
Less-than-pleasant things explained...Review Date: 2000-10-04
Sure enough, the book discusses those wonderful things we excrete, (sweat, sebum) cast out (feces, urine), reject outright (vomitus) and circulate within us (blood and bile)- and gives some interesting (for me, quite compelling) information concerning these fluids. The author covers the recorded history of such materials or things relating to them, like the story of Thomas Crapper's modern flush toilet.
The author also did surveys of peoples' bathroom habits (how much TP they use, whether they look after they're done, etc.). Also included are moments of human excretion in literature and the arts, as well as TV and film- remember the Barf-O-Rama scene in `Stand By Me'? Or eating beans by the campfire in `Blazing Saddles'?.- but only up to the book's publication date of 1993, before bodily relief became the big thing on the tube & silver screen. If a new edition is ever to be released, covering the `potty-time' moments of trendy favorites `Beavis and Butt-Head' and `South Park' alone would add more than a few pages...
There's some strange moments too, like methods of proper urination when genital piercings get in the way, the advent of urine therapy as a treatment for certain ills, and other off-the-wall practices and notions concerning one's bodily castings.
But probably the most interesting part of the book, at least for me, was the glossary of slang terms for the various types of bodily expulsion... half of which I never even seen or heard of before! Now I have a whole new arsenal to study and learn... heh.

Plain speaking about the unspeakableReview Date: 2007-04-16
How were things "handled" before toilet paper? Ever contemplate the history of the enema? Did you know that loose bowels were once treated with opium? Learn the story of Joseph Pujol, "The Fartiste", famous for his flatulence. Is vomit an "involuntary food review"? Drinking urine is a cure? An antiseptic? (the ammonia in unine) Did you know there's much more to mucus than just a few boogies?
How about bodily functions in literature (Shakespeare, The Marquis de Sade, Dante, Picasso, James Joyce, Mark Twain, Burroughs, Selby, and adding one of my own, modern writer Edward Lee), or in classic cinema? What is Cockle Bread? What about Freud's connection between poo and $exuality?
There are poo quotes from famous people from Shakespeare to Tiny Tim, an extensive look into the invention of the toilet, a glance at toilets across the world, poo in religion and folklore, and even poo in art. The world of poo is amazingly artistic and intellectual world. There's even a brief mention to the hilarious cartoon 'Ren & Stimpy' in the 'Art, Music, & Criticism' chapter, showing an elaborate research from ancient to modern references.
This book includes Spinrad's Survey Methodology, a copy of the survey itself, a detailed 'Recommended Reading' section, an extensive Bibliography, and a full Index. Unfortunately, there are no pictures, and I felt that a few pictures would have spiced up the book a little bit. At only 121 pages, the book is large sized but slim, making reading easy and enjoyable. So ... Enjoy!

Feelingful Guide to Working with Reiki in Your Life Each DayReview Date: 1999-02-11
As her writing shows, this genuine person, this Teacher demonstrates how *standing in one's own center* and allowing Reiki to *flow through* is at the core of wellness. Life-force energy is like an ocean in which we human beings thrive she is telling us. It is a natural blessing of life, and ever-present ebb-and-flow, and we are all free to enjoy it.
Changes, decisions and questions are part of all of our lives. "Reiki in Eeveryday Living" offers a method for attaining personal clarity within that process.
A *must read* for Reiki practitioners and anyone interested in a common sense approach to natural healing.

Wonderful stories -- challenging ideasReview Date: 2004-01-05
These stories are fascinating and give hope to anyone facing life-challenging conditions. They can't give much practical advice, because each case is so different. The main thing is that the path to healing you choose has to be something you believe in and something that fits your values and your outlook on life. Non-Christians rarely recover at Lourdes, and witch doctors can't heal you if you don't believe. But given that, almost anything can work in individual cases.
This is important knowledge --- be true to yourself in your healing practices -- I have applied it in my life with multiple sclerosis and in my book The Art of Getting Well. Highly recommended.

A terrific, helpful, upbeat,, and well researched bookReview Date: 2005-06-21
The authors start by telling how difficult it has been to study their subject. They cite an article from the 60's that says that "...many clinicians have shown an unwillingness to report their cases [of remarkable recoveries] in the medical literature ... because of fear of ridicule from their peers."
While that attitude is hopefully a little less prevalent today I suspect it is still very common.
The authors further explain the difficulty of researching remarkable recoveries by telling how in cases that were reported, the spontaneous disappearance of the tumor was duly noted but there was no inquiry or investigation into why that happened.
Hirshberg and Barasch then devote the rest of the book to exploring many different possible reasons for remarkable recoveries. Some of the explanations they consider and thoroughly explore are a mind-body mechanism, personality types, social connectivity,
biological explanations, survival traits, and miracles.
The authors acknowledge that most people with terminal cancers do not experience remarkable recoveries, but they add a lot of knowledge about the significant number that do, and in the process offer hope for many.
I highly recommend this book to everyone with a chronic illness and also to those who love and care for and about them.

Use a PC? Read This Book -- It'll Open Your Eyes!Review Date: 2008-04-04
I did some Internet digging and discovered Maskin's dry eye book. It opened my eyes, so to speak.
The first thing the book confirmed was that I had dry eyes. I also learned about the other syndromes and disorders I could be experiencing; I also discovered which of the over-the-counter drugs I should use --and which to avoid.
The book provided me with a wealth of simple tips I could use immediately to help reduce my dry eye problem. For instance, I lowered the height of my monitor and started taking breaks every 30 minutes. Obvious things, sure, but only after reading about them in the book.
Besides helping me understand more about dry eyes, the book also made me realize I needed to seek out a consultation with an ophthalmologist. (That alone was worth the price of the book).
The writing style is comfortable and easy-to-read, and it's remarkably thorough. I definitely have a better handle on the problem and realize it can be treated.
If you're having any type of eye discomfort -- as you probably do as you're on this page -- I strongly urge you to pick up a copy of Maskin's book.
