Anyone familiar with Dr. Braunwald's superb cardiovascular exploits in the "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" would not be surprised by the richness of this book.
The diligently crafted chapters are comprehensive, authoritative, well-illustrated, and include all the 'ins' and 'outs' of contemporary cardiology. It is one of the most consistent and coherent multi-authored texts in the field.
This single-volume CD-ROM package is a rich blend of evidence based medicine, best practice, and all the user-flexibility an e-book enthusiast would expect.

Dr. James Thogtam: A classic book for those in the field

WITH THE SEVENTH EDITION OF BRAUNwald's Heart Disease, the editors have accomplished an impressive feat: improving on an already classic text. With 36 new chapters and full-color figures and photographs, the new edition is substantially altered in both content and appearance. Compared with the rather limited color-plate photographs in the sixth edition, the color photographs, figures, and tables in each chapter significantly enhance the new text.

Informative chapters on the foundations of cardiovascular medicine remain, including detailed discussions of history taking, physical examination, and electrocardiography, topics often overshadowed in an era of rapidly progressive medical technology.....

The seventh edition of Braunwald's Heart Disease would be a worthy addition to the medical library of any practicing cardiologist, cardiology fellow, or health care practitioner with a special interest in heart disease.

One of the most informative and interesting books I have ever read. A must read for every woman of child bearing age well before she considers having children and then again when she becomes pregnant. I wish I had read it sooner.

The truth of Dettwyler will set any breastfeeding mom free

Dettwyler's book: Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives is an instant classic and a must-read for any health personal, parent or anyone else interested or somehow involved in breastfeeding (aka everyone!)
Dettwyler opens our eyes, not only to breastfeeding, but to many misunderstandings and wrongdoing in our society, when it comes to raising our children.

I'm currently writing a book about breastfeeding in my native language danish, and Kathy Dettwyler is quoted several times. In Denmark child upbringing is generally a far cry from natural upbringing. Hopefully the book, with Kathy's assistance, can help change that.

Thank you Ms. Dettwyler!

An amazing book

No other breastfeeding book compares to this one. Every woman should read this book because the information contained within is invaluable. It gives background for how and why breastfeeding works like it does. It's powerful information not found in any other book I've read.

Solid evidence for an ages-old concept

Review Date: 2005-10-19
One of the most interesting books I read on the topic of breastfeeding was Kathy Dettwyler's Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives. Besides being incredibly well-researched and thorough, it also presented an amazingly logical (yet somehow overlooked) idea: breastfeeding as an evolutionary adaptation. Breastfeeding benefits the survival of the baby and the human species - not only because of its nutritional benefits, but because it keeps mother and child close during a time of vulnerability. It also fosters the mother's ability to cue in on her child's needs and respond to them quickly and efficiently-one might say, instinctually. The modern concept of "attachment parenting" is really a very ancient, practical, and life-sustaining practice. Dettwyler's book presents solid scientific evidence from studies in biology, anthropology, and sociology that reinforces this ages-old concept.

This book has changed my life! There is so much evidence and sound facts about why it is so important for a child to be breastfed until the age of 2.5- 7 years of age that a person would have to be deaf, dumb & blind to at last not consider it. It is because of this book, that I am going to continue to exclusively pump for my son until the age of 5 (he never latched). I would highly recommend this book for any breastfeeding mother that is considering whether or not she should continue to breastfed beyond the age of 12 months. Read this book. It will change your life. When I read it, not only did I see how humans create their own destruction, I saw the face of God.

As a medical student with an interest in nephrology and acid-base disorders, this book provides a readable but rigorous discussion of the subject. Chapters are well-organized and do not have to be read in order - they are written to be independently referenced as the need arises.

I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics. I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions. I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders.

An impressively lucid and detailed account of renal physiology, with a close focus on the clinical causes and implications. It is intensely practical, with up to date references (at time of publication) and sifting exerecises at the end of each chapter.

It is precisely what far too many 'nephrologists' have all but forgotten in their obsession with immunology, studying the aetiology of injury is all well, but without a text like this it's difficult to appreciate the intricacy, beauty and sheer majesty of renal physiology. Can you tell the difference between tubulo-glomerular feedback and glomerulotubular balance? - shame on the 'forensic pathologists' who can't! This book will provide rapid relief.

Outstanding text, but consider "The essentials" for a lighter read

No doubt, this is a terrific textbook and is a great resource for Nephrology fellows, ICU fellows and general physiologists. However, for the med student or housestaff who would like to digest the basics of renal electrolyte handling and acid-base homeostasis, I'd like to recommend "Renal Pathophysiology the Essentials" by B.D. Rose and H.G. Rennke (ISBN: 0683073540). It is from 1994 and may lack some of the molecular details, but is an even more "readable" text.

The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.

Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

This book is inexpensive and short. It can be read in one sitting. It gives all the details and explains very well how to cleanse your colon WITHOUT enemas or fasting. The products he recommends can be easily found over the internet by doing a search "Robert Gray Colon." This is by far the best information I have found and the easiest program to follow. Robert Gray really knows what he is talking about.

This 77pg. booklet has some good info. but you can find similar info. in other quality colon books. I don't understand after all these revisions that there are still some errors. For example, the author explains how to make a rejuvalac with cabbage and then at the end of the explanation it makes reference to wheat berries but no explanation on how to make it with that. The climax of the book and the one that tops it all is the author explains which herbs that will help clean the colon but doesn't say how many milligrams needed per each herb or where you may find the source of this herb combination (if it's out there). Basically the book directs you to a dead end. Buy at your own risk! If the author can make these necessary corrections then I'll give a 5-star ...

I read this book with interest some 4 years ago now.
Back then I was suffering with cronic pain in the bowel, had numerous test at doctors and hospital, all with no diagnosis.
This book made me realise what we do to our bodies with diary products and I gave up this food group immediately, and went on the cleansing program for 4 to 5 months.
Within 3 months the pain had gone, and to this day has never returned !

A Corpsman's Legacy: He Continues to Heal Others Through the Daughter He Never Knew

A moving story of a daughter's search for her father.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-06
Ms. Hanson started her search for family information due to a medical problem which ultimately turned out to be incorrect. As she was adopted, this was information that would have been critical if it had been needed. Yet that mistaken diagnosis took her down the road to find out about her birth parents and I am sure that this was a story she had in no way anticipated.

The story of how she met her birth mother and later the other members of her mothers family - including her mom's husband is all quite moving.

But it is the story of her quest for her father that is the key to the book. Her father was a navy hospitalcorpsman serving in Vietnam. He served initally with ground Marines but his real goal was to fly as a corpsman with the Marines. He got his wish and died on his first flight to recover wounded Marines. Ms. Hanson's story of her search for anyone who had known him and thier memories of him is outstanding. I have done some research on my own families naval careers and have found this to be a frustrating at times, but very rewarding process. Ms. Hanson could have quite but still slogged on towards her goal. She was introduced to then Senator Cleland's office which was able to get her father's medals for her. I commend the senator's office for that effort. However it is the story of her quest for her father's air crew wings that is the capstone of the story. Through her efforts and those of her father's former squadron commander and others, HN Young was awarded his wings, not the wings of an aircrewman but the air crew combat wings which were highly regarded and prized by those who saw them and those who wore them.

Ironically I recieved this book in the mail on the day that my navy medicine clinic was celebrating the birthday of the Navy Hospital Corps. I gave Ms. Hanson's tribute to her father to my shipmates for inclusion in the professional reading library of the clinic. Somehow that seems quite a fitting place for this story of an enthusiastic and dedicated corpsman and his equally dedicated and tenacious daughter.

I commend Ms. Hanson for taking this difficult journey and then sharing her thoughts with us. I also commend the many men and women who helped her on this labor which later became a labor of love - well done shipmates.

I was deeply moved by this incredible story. The author, who was adopted at birth, does a wonderful job in bringing herself and her biological father to life. By the end of the first chapter I felt as if I knew her and her father personally. After that I could hardly put the book down. Her story begins at age 26, when she needs to locate her biological parents to obtain her medical history. In her quest for that information she learns for the first time that her father was Gary Norman Young - a Navy Corpsman who was killed in action in Vietnam on February 7, 1969. He died before learning that he was going to be a father. The author tells her story from the heart with unwavering honesty, so be prepared to share viscerally in her excitements and disappointments as she embarks upon a remarkable journey to get to know her father. What transpires is often unexpected and at times truly amazing. What started out as her personal conquest evolves into something much more. And how she handled the life changing events that followed made it clear to me that she inherited more from her Corpsman father than his smile. I found the book to be well researched and accurate. It is well worth reading.

What an emotional roller coaster. I followed Ms Hanson's ups and downs throughtout the book as if they were my own. This story was well thought out, researched, and presented in such a way that it cut right through my inner soul with surgical precision. It was difficult, at times, for me to digest the vivid scenes she artfully reconstructed. I was overwhelmed by the support she recieved from so many folks. It really drives home the credo, that Marines really do look after their corpsman. Well done Ms Hanson. Semper Fi. Danny Deneff (Corpsman, Vietnam 1970-1971)

This is simply a great heroic story. I have known since 2000 that this was a story that needed to be told because it would affect many people. I should start with the admission that I have known the author personally since 1999. It was my pleasure to get to introduce her to my Vietnam combat brothers at the Pop-a-Smoke reunion in San Diego during 2000.

From the earliest moment, it was plain to see that this was a compelling story that would somehow find a way to get published.

It took many weeks to prepare myself for this read because I knew it would be emotionally heart wrenching and at the same time a delightful story of dedication and heart felt purpose. For a story that is now 37 years old, it is still a beautiful account of one good guy doing the dirty work of fighting in combat.

As expected, the early part of this story made the tears flow and I thought that I already knew most of the details. What the book now tells me is that this was a gig-saw puzzle that had more pieces than I ever imagined. Only Stephanie could be dedicated enough to put this puzzle together. When the final piece was put in place, she knew that she was special because she was the daughter of a special corpsman.

This story (page 265) really is about discovering a legacy of a father that she never knew. By the end of this story every reader can see that she got to know her father quite well and boy was she proud.

This whole Vietnam experience is a lot about healing and Stephanie was my reminder that the healing would take more than one generation. Further the experience was about affirming that the sacrifices made were worthwhile. The author found the answer to these fundamental questions.

This is a great read for all regardless of the fact that some had a Vietnam connection and many did not.

When the premise of this book was described to me, a daughter of a Vietnam veteran who was given up for adoption when her father was killed in action before she was born, I was turned off. I expected a story of a bitter woman. Instead I found a story of a young lady who was curious about the identity of her birth father, made some tentative inquiries to veterans, and continued her search as she was energized and motivated by the warm reception from marines she contacted.

The book describes in fine detail the incident that took her father's life, including the men who removed his body from the wreckage under heavy enemy fire. With that, the author created realism and and feel for the day to day life of a corpsman in Vietnam that I had not experienced before. She also introduces us to several veterans both as they were then and as they are now, over 30 years later. This also explains the bond that exists among Vietnam Veterans, especially those in the Marine Corps.

Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more. The book (hard cover) is pretty resistant and it easily stands going to the bench (where you surely will be using it a lot). If you are thinking about spending money on a book about cell culture techniques this is the book! Don't think twice.

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed. Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.

A common myth about Dr. Atkins that could stand some clearing up is that he advocates a strict homeopathic system of medical care and an unbalanced meat-only diet. These misconceptions can be corrected by reading the first few chapters. Atkins actually gives well-reasoned explanations of his philosophy of Complementary medicine, an approach that stresses prevention via good dietary habits, vitamin supplements and exercise, then homeopathic and vitamin remedies when there is a problem, and finally traditional medicine when all else fails (Yeah, he's a quack all right!). Without going into the details and logistics here, I was impressed with how logical and simple to apply this system is.

Where Atkins' detractors have hung up on most is the section on diet and how our last 150 years or so of history have affected it. From our pre-industrial food options though the Twentieth Century's sudden proliferation of processed flour and sugar, we can trace the steady rise of heart disease, obesity, tooth decay and Type 2 diabetes. Worse, the industries that stood to profit from the "deadly duo" (and other starchy carb-based foods that were taking the place of meats, eggs, butter and cheese as the bulk of our diets) greatly influenced the medical profession's research and findings. The resulting decline of our national health is a bitter legacy to take responsibility for, and that is just what too many of our processed food makers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and health experts would have to do once they conceded that Atkins may indeed have been right. For that reason, such an admission may be decades in coming.

Whether or not you find yourself agreeing with that area of Atkins' theory, the book presents sound arguments and encourages a lifestyle that has improved untold lives over the past 30 years. There are changes you can make that will lower your blood pressure, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, eliminate systemic yeast infections, reverse diabetes and re-energize you - all without the use of drugs. In fact, you will probably end up being able to ditch the drugs you are on now.

I believe that someday Dr. Atkins vitamin and diet principles will be the standard recommendations from the health industry. It is hard to argue with the steadily growing segment of our population that simply gets lasting results by using them, and expands slowly via word of mouth. Meanwhile, those happy few of us will continue to benefit from the work done by this incredible man and his steadfast campaigning on our behalf before a tragic head wound took his life a few months ago.
Rest in peace, Doctor.

Purchased recently to help my work in an Emergency clinic. The book is an excellent collection of conditions commonly encountered in a busy ER clinic set up.Very comprehensive, informative.
Each condition is described very professionally from description of the condition-diagnosis-prognosis-treatment including the description for many procedures used in the treatment.Doses of medications is very informative.

Repetitions are to be avoided; example-the procedure for "gastric lavage" is repeatedly described in detail under all conditions that possibly require a gastric lavage.Instead of this the general procedure for gastric lavage could have been described at one place and reference to that page can be given on all conditions requiring a gastric lavage. This can save a lot of pages of print.

A few demonstrations of how to calculate a CRI would be very helpful.
Inclusion of color pictures illustrations can save a lot of space in describing the procedures.

Inclusion of common toxins and antidote is helpful.

I have worn out the first edition, which is just under 300 pages. This book is about twice the size but has more than 2X the info because the type is smaller. This is the book I often use daily to get me through poisonings, trauma and more. Each problem has the treatment completely listed, you do NOT have to page back and forth to find drugs, procedures, etc. Buy it, I'm glad I did!

Great book for an emergency practice or just to review the occasional emergency problem. Definitely worth buying. Also, worth updating from the first edition.

I have purchased several reference texts on emergency medicine over the years - this is by far the best - well organized and (quickly)readable.
