A much needed reference book for special response teams

Although in its third edition, it only gets better and becomes a more valuable reference book for first responders involved in all levels of Hazmat preparedness, response, mitigation and/or recovery. A big thank you to the authors!!!

Follett is So-so, at best...

Review Date: 2008-10-06
This is the second time I'm trying a Ken Follett book, seeing the fan following he seems to be getting (the first being "Hammer of Eden"). I don't know whether it's just my bad luck, or whether Follett is simply not my type of author.

In fact, to give credit where it's due, this is better than Hammer of Eden, in the sense that the plot is believable, and actually quite thrilling. I was riveted to the book for almost the entire length of the story, but the climax was a big let down for me.

The plot is simple - the purported theft of a super-deadly strain of experimental virus from a super-secure lab, and the attempts to retrieve it, in the background of Christmas vacations and a blizzard! The speed of the book is really good, and that's the primary reason my rating is 3 out of 5, and not 2!

Follett also creates some really memorable moments of emotional exchange between the various characters, most of whom happen to be at the Oxenfeld Mansion. In fact, the things going for the book are:
- characters well developed, especially that of Toni
- the sub-plot (secondary plot, if you'd rather!) is also well developed and is not relegated to any step-treatment at any time
- the two plots are brought together quite deftly and believably

What the book has going against it are:
- let down in the climax
- the scare of the virus is never let become real enough
- Kit's character turns out to be the weakest link in the end (!)

overall rating: 3 / 5

There's a lot going on in this book. Nothing surprising, but it keeps you going. I enjoyed reading it, but I won't read it again. I'll probably sell it to a half price book store. Not sure if I would give it to a friend to read.

I loved it

I read this book in two days - I couldn't put it down. It was entertaining from start to finish. I laughed out loud a couple of times. After I read the back of the book I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. I wanted to read something that was faced-paced and very entertaining. This book delivered.

Another good book by Ken Follett

This book is about a plot to steal a deadly virus from a top laboratory in Scotland. It is very entertaining, albeit predictable.

I would strongly recommend other books by the same author, including "The pillars of the earth" and "World without end". Those books are great!

Not the best of Ken Follett

I've read a lot of Ken Follett, and Whiteout I'd rate at the second to worst of his books. Not that's it's bad, thus the three stars, but it's almost written in an amateurish style...very predictable characters, predictable plot, but still well-written and entertaining. Quick read.

I have a fancy idea to visit Australia some day. And if I do, I hope to capture at least some of the lyrical feelings and tensions and wonders that Keneally throws around with such ease. The word that comes to mind is "evolution". All the characters (and I use this word with full meaning) are in a constant state of development, as is the continent itself. No static figures here. Dispair, mental instability, and even survival are treated with a tentative gentleness that I have not encountered before.

My hat is off to Mr. Keneally. I hope there are many more stories in the wings.

INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING

I suffered through three-quarters of this book then took it back to the libary without bothering to finish it. i simply DID NOT CARE about the story or characters. I told myself if the author wrote, "dear bookbuyer" one more time within the book, I'd throw the book into a river (which I couldn't do since it wasn't my book, but would have loved to!) I was really surprised at how horrible this book was since i figured the author of Schindler's List (which I haven't yet read) would know how to write!

Just nothing

First of all, this book goes so many times out of the main story that is difficult to remember it, the main story could be written in 50 pages or less, you won't take anything of this book, maybe two or three things about the animals Down Under but that is all. The story doesn't have any sense since the first page till the last one.

The Fantasy of Reinvention

Review Date: 2003-04-13
The central idea of this book, it seemed to me, has to do with abandoning one life for another. If one thinks of this as essentially the American idea of reinventing oneself, Thomas Kenneally informs us that it is also very Australian, and rightly so, for Australia is a land that is full of hiding places for those who wish not to be found. The protagonist is a woman who can no longer bear the agony of her existence after the death of her children--and so attempts to do away with her identity and her history by traveling to the Outback under an assumed name. Simple enough, one might think--but here is where Kenneally's genius takes root, for we are taken on a wild and wooly ride as Kate becomes deeply embedded in the lives of a diverse set of characters, unschooled and totally remote from the sophistition and nuance that formed her own upbringing. A wild bunch indeed, they are incredibly touching in their sense of loyalty and courage. There is a surreal quality to this adventure that is heightened even more by the introduction of two pets, a kangaroo and an emu, native species which are somehow incorporated into this world of carnival and misadventure--an Australian "Don Quixote." A brilliant and stirring enactment--let them try to make a film of it!!

I kept thinking it would make sense or get better or have some substance. It was remarkably bad! I threw it away after reading 200 pages or so and it only has 277. What a waste of time and money!!!!!!!...

I found this book to be very interesting despite the fact that it was written over 10 years ago. The discussion of the politics/strategies employed by the individual EPA regions was particularly fascinating. It covers the frustrations of dealing with Region V, the bean counting game, and other facets of Superfund work that you may have discussed with coworkers but rarely find mentioned in books. It consists largely of case studies for sites that have approved RODs. My main frustration with the book was it did not provide a reference list so you could check to see which environmental contractors were involved in each site. I think this book will be most useful to those already working in the environmental field, as it may be hard to follow for those new to Superfund. I felt I had to review this book as the only other review was by someone who couldn't really appreciate it.

Contary to the title, this book is not comprehensive. It is well written but covers mainly legal aspects of brownfield redevelopment. Biophysical elements are covered only very briefly. About half of the book is a listing of state by state regulations related to brownfield development, making the book much longer, but adding little to its value for individual users, who are likely to work mainly in a single state. Thus, about half of the book is of very limited use to the average reader.

of Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents, slightly rearranged. The bulk of this book consists of the abridged class indices (no rewriting, really -there are references to the agent descriptions that are in the Handbook but not in this book). The Class Indices are arguably the best part of the CRC Handbook of Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents, and if you are trying to decide which to buy, this is probably the one for you unless price is no object. But the class indices are very broad descriptions of the materials, and their utility in providing guidance for emergency action is really somewhat limited.
