Well organized, great information, clearly written reference bookReview Date: 2006-07-06
Exceptional guide to improving health with proper nutritionReview Date: 1998-11-20
The authors carefully describe the degree to which a claimed benefit for each of 40 some vitamins and minerals is substantiated, as well as risks of toxicity, and dietary sources. There descriptions are based on a balanced assessment of the available research.
The first part of the book is organized by vitamin or mineral, so you can see the collected information on, for example, Vitamin E, in one place. The second part of the book is organized by disease or condition (e.g., cancer, fatigue, etc.) and discusses all the relevant vitamins and minerals, as well as general nutrition issues related to the disease. This second part is very helpful if you're facing a particular problem.
The book includes an extensive set of references, as well as a good glossary and index. Some information has changed in the years since the 2nd edition was published, but it seems generally up-to-date. When the 3rd edition comes out, I'll definitely buy a copy.

Excellent BookReview Date: 2007-07-29
Reading this book increased my fund of knowledge and consolidated my love for the field of pediatric gastroenterology.
Other larger text like Wyllie and Walker( two diff books) contain much more information. But if you need a book that is succinct, a quick/free flowing read and that delivers more than is needed for your peds GI rotation, then Dr Guandalini's book is preffered.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!Review Date: 2007-04-07
It's a must have for any mom who plans or is breastfeeding her children. It's comforting too as you find out that you're no the only experiencing things and the book explains why it's happening. I've already loaned out my copy to a friend and will start giving this out to any friends at baby showers. It's just that good!

The most useful pocket-sized guide I've foundReview Date: 2002-01-25
In general, I've found the book extremely helpful, but it has a couple of flaws: (1) Foods are grouped into sections according to type (e.g., Dairy or Vegetables), and then into various sub-classifications within each section. Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to find a particular item (the Soups, Stews, etc. section is especially confusing). (2) The cross-references aren't always helpful. I looked up "focaccia" under Breads, and was told "See Pizza," but under Pizza they just list "Italian bread type," not the bread by itself (which is more often used for sandwiches than pizza). It would have taken no more space to give the calorie count than it did to give that worthless cross-reference! (3) There is NO INDEX, which would have solved Problem #1. Still, in general this is a great little guide, and I hope the author continues to improve it in future editions.

Are you getting the right "Exchanges for All Occasions?"Review Date: 2004-04-24
The history is a little fuzzy, but the earliest editions (C1983, 1986, 1987)were called "Exchanges for All Occasions" and "Exchanges for All Occasions: Meeting the Challenge of Diabetes." They were published by different publishers and their editions and revisions overlapped. The 3rd book was titled, "Exchanges for All Occasions: How to Use the Exchange System for Healthy and Creative Food Choices-3rd Edition," and was published in 1993.
The special one is the 4th edition, titled: "Exchanges for All Occasions: Your Guide to Choosing Healthy Foods Anytime Anywhere-4th Edition." C1997, ISBN 1885115350. This book is very, very good, and also very, very rare. When it can be found, it goes for about $40.00. It is a terrific book and its exchange lists include "carb-counting," WHICH THE PREVIOUS EDITIONS DO NOT, along with extensive exchange lists and other information about meal planning, carb-counting your own recipes, and dining out. It has a salmon cover and is a 5.5" x 8.5" trade paperback. If it can be found, it is very expensive. I have one and probably wouldn't part with it for any amount of money (within reason).
There is also a great little pocket guide, that was published in 2000. It has the identical salmon-colored cover, but it is a tiny book and is called "Exchanges for All Occasions: Pocket Guide to Healthy Food Choices Anytime, Anywhere"(notice the different subtitle). This little guide, C2000, ISBN 1885115563, is the book that all the Amazon reviews, for all editions, are referring to. Notice the reviews say it is a very handy size. It has the same exchange lists, including carb counting, as the 1997 book, but none of the other information. It is a very handy pocket book with good exchange lists for everything, including ethnic restaurant foods.
All of the different Amazon sale pages for the different editions are mixed up, and they mostly show the cover of the 4th edition and the good reviews of the pocket edition.
Because the 1997 book is so valuable and so good, you often will find the 3 older editions (1983-1993)listed under the 4th edition's ISBN for a high price, or even the Pocket Guide's ISBN for a moderately high price. The earlier 3 editions of "Exchanges for All Occasions," which were published in the 1980's, do not have carb-counting and do not have the salmon-colored cover that is shown on all product pages for these books (further adding to the confusion). These old editions are readily available on Amazon at a very cheap price, and sometimes masquarade as the 4th edition at a high price. Buyer beware.

Extremely informative examination of iron overloadReview Date: 2008-03-30
What Every Medical Professional (and patient) show knowReview Date: 2004-08-04
Especially of interest to me is the in-depth education on how iron specifically effects each system of the body. The extensive information given on diagnosis and treatment is invaluable. The graphics are incredible.
Dr. Weinberg is a leading expert in infectious disease and cancer. He is well known for his work which focuses on prevention of chronic disease by reducing iron levels by reducing intake of iron in diet and discontinuing contributive factors such as tobacco use and alcohol. His more than fifty years work in the field of iron's relationship to cancer has earned him prestige and recognition worldwide. He is a pioneer in the field of iron studies, and has provided us with more than 350 articles and books devoted to iron. I have had the honor of hearing Dr. Weinberg speak in person numerous times, and have never failed to walk away richer for the experience. My expectations have not been disappointed with this excellent publication.

Essential Health InformaionReview Date: 2002-01-06
For decades fats have been thought of as nothing more than an unhealthy form of stored energy. But research over the past twenty-five years shows that they are some of the most important, and most commonly deficient nutrients in the human diet.
John Finnegan has written the most informative and concise book about the 'good fat' -- 'bad fat' story and it's relation to health and disease that I have found.
Thanks John
The most readable and practical book on the subject.Review Date: 2003-12-09
We normally don't think of oils and fats as refined foods but they're just as guilty of the fact as wonder bread and white sugar.
This book shows you just how oils are made and gives a brief history of them before telling you what's good and what's bad. It's sensible and logical, and free of buzzwords that frequent books on health.
There are helpful diagrams and charts, of course. There's also a buyer's guide, not to mention a biblography which is a great springboard if you want to read more. This book was particularly a great foundation for the more technical Udo Erasmus book, which I read soon after.
The message of this book is that we are nutritionally deficient because our diets are full of refined oils, that lack nutrients. Once we replace those nutrients, by using healthy oils, we regain that health. The issues of weight control are also addressed but are not as important as you might think in a book about fat.
This book is ten years old. I only wish that more people had read it, and taken it seriously. For more details, read it yourself. It's a great value and you're going to like reading it more than most books on the subject.

Nature's "Universal" AntioxidantReview Date: 2001-07-06
Atherosclerosis, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer (all types), Alzheimer's disease, liver disorders, and many other health conditions can be treated using Alpha Lipoic Acid.
Getting all of this information for less ... one of the greatest values you will ever come across!
Everyone should know about Alpha Lipoic Acid! It is the second most powerful antioxidant in the human body (glutathione is first). ALA is the only "universal" (both water and fat-soluble) antioxidant. This means that it protects both the outside (water soluble) and inside (fat soluble) parts of every cell against virtually every type of deadly free radical known to science.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is essential for protecting every major body system & organ (brain, eyes, heart, liver, immune system, etc.) It also helps increase the effectiveness of vitamins C, E, CoQ10 and Glutathione.
If you are serious about using Alpha Lipoic Acid, whether for prevention or treatement of disease(s), "All About Alpha Lipoic Acid" is a great "beginner's" guide!
