When I read this book I thought it was like any other girl help book but this one was different. I used to be shy but now I am strong and have confidence in myself. I used to be a tad overweight but now I am at my comfortable weight w/ a lifetime of healthy eating ahead of me. I also learned the appropriate way to exercise w/o strain. It was a very good book and I think I've read it over about 12 times now.I recommended it to all my friends and they said it was the best book they have read.

Great book for girls (and women!)

THis book encourages the reader with tips from people who have successfully lost weight by making permanent changes to their diet, caloric intake and who are thrilled with the results they have had. I can assure the readers who don't like to exercise that they would be surprised by what they are accomplishing by the end of the eight week program. You are gently, subtly coaxed into increasing your energy level. Sally also carefully selected the recipes which are easy to prepare but delicious beyond what you thought healthy eating should be.

Hey, I just picked up this book after following Sally's columns in The Washington Post for the last few years and just want to say to others that Sally really gets it -- the ups and downs of weight loss, the challenge to get rid of my "spare tire" and eat well. It's refreshing to have someone so knowledgable and supportive.

I discovered the Lean Plate club column (every Tuesday in the Washington Post) & the Lean Plate web chat (12-2pm Tuesdays) a year ago. I look forward to Tuesdays, knowing Help & support as well as fresh ideas are on the way via the column & web chat. This is what I find in Sally Squire's book: good common sense advice, inspiration & help . There are short tests you take that help you see where you are- motivation-wise & where you are in your (in my case) lifelong struggle with weight issues. There is solid nutritional information. There are recipes for food & exercise. This book is packed with facts and do-able suggestions for how to approach and maintain your own weight loss plan. Sally Squires approaches the facts in a fun, no-nonsense- positive way. I highly recommend this book. I keep it with me all the time. I lost a lot of weight (100 pounds) & reached my goal over a year ago, but the struggle now to maintain new habits & keep the weight off is very challenging & difficult. This book gives me inspiration & hope.

The best book on selenium EVER!

This book goes into great detail over this essential trace mineral called selenium. I've bought other books on selenium and this is by far the most detailed, yet it is still very easy to read. I couldn't put this book down once I got it!

Highly Informative!!

Review Date: 2001-10-23
This book covered it all! It was thorough, informative, and very well researched. Most importantly, it was easy to read and understand. Like most people, I was misinformed about the power of this supplement, and how it could benefit me. Thanks to Dr. Drake, my family and I now understand how to use selenium to minimize our risk of various cancers.

Selenium can significantly reduce the risk of cancer.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-19
A few years ago the results of a large double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study of selenium supplementation was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The multi-year study showed that people given 200 micrograms of supplemental selenium daily had only HALF the death rate from cancer as people who were given a placebo instead of selenium. No harmful side effects were observed. Has your doctor told you about this study or recommended that you take supplemental selenium to reduce your risk of cancer? I doubt it. He or she may well be unaware of this study; or, if aware, has dismissed it because it involved a simple, readily-available nutrient rather than a new wonder drug. But, if any pharmaceutical drug were available which cut the cancer death rate in half with no harmful side effects -- and none currently is -- you would see ads for it plastered on TV and magazines and your doctor would readily prescribe it for you. So if you want to reduce your risk of cancer with selenium you're probably not going to get the information you need from your doctor. However, you can get it from this book. By the way, perhaps your doctor or a friend may tell you that selenium is toxic. It is in large doses, but it is quite safe in the 200 microgram dosage used in the JAMA study which, as noted above, found no harmful side effects. Cancer is a disease that we all dread, but now you have the power to significantly reduce your risk. Please supply yourself with the information you need to do so.

Slow Food's Petrini continues to evolve
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-28
Carlo Petrini has been attempting to preserve a more traditional view of food for a long time, this book lays out his current thinking in a clear and concise layering of understanding food in culture (gastronomy), understanding quality (good, clean, fair food), and the tools to put these ideas to work in the world going forward.
As we reconstitute a food culture based on transparency and quality in the USA and hopefully across the globe, this book provides key ideas related to respect for diversity of food products, respect for food in culture, and respect for the work associated with food that can serve to guide us. This book made me think and laugh, and I recommend it highly.

Marvellous introduction to the Slow Food movement
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-08
More than a reaction to Fast Food's arrival in Italy, Slow Food
has evolved into a global movement encompassing many different actions to improve what we all taste and eat.
It's not about eating well in the privileged, Michelin-starred table sense. It's about recognizing everyone's barriers to eating well and judging the quality of our food on three levels, asking whether it is good, clean and fair. (The book's original title is just that: Buono, pulito e Giusto).
The movement's founder wrote this book to set out a new definition of gastronomy, enumerating some of the issues facing our food supply and helping to turn a thinking eater to positive action.
Beautifully translated, Slow Food Nation is a cogent & readable introduction to what Slow Food is about. Highly recommended!

Slow Food: Rich in Character, Intelligence, and Hope

Review Date: 2007-09-28
Carlo Petrini gave a lecture at NCSU in Raleigh earlier this year. His talk was in Italian, but his ideas were universal: if we want happiness and peace, we're going to have to change the way we eat.

The book is fantastic. It is beautifully written, powerful, and balances scientific data and understanding with cultural histories and sensible aestheics. His proposal of a new branch of science, gastronomy, is as revolutionary as Freud's proposal to study the human psyche or David Kelley's efforts to study design as a science.

This book is The Inconvenient Truth for those who eat. But it is also a far more optimistic book, for the solution to the problem of industrial agriculture is to seek out good food, to meet and learn about the farms and farmers who grow it, and the reward is pleasure.

The Introduction by Alice Waters is, like the food at Chez Panisse, a sensual as well as a sensible delight.

This is a great book to buy, read, and then share with others, all around the world.

Is good to see this book is not just written by nutriologist, there is an important contribution of clinicians dedicated to specific areas.

Very technical but very useful.

Review Date: 2002-04-07
The 4th edition of Small Animal Clinical Nutrition is significantly different from the first 3 editions -- expanded, more information, different editors, different organization, etc.

Much of this volume is more technical than the average reader wants or needs. It is a textbook used in veterinary schools. But a dedicated reader could gain much from it. Even the average reader could benefit from the chapters on commerical pet foods and on home prepared diets.

An almost overwhelming amount of information
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-30
If you are one of those people that want to be able to find answers to questions on your own, no matter how technical, this is a good book for you.

First, this review is being written from the perspective of a pet owner, NOT a veterinarian. I do have 20 years experience interacting with human clinicians (doctor, pharmacists, nurses, etc.) so I am familiar with more medical jargon than most people. However, I believe that a motivated student could gain a lot of knowledge from this book. I have used it much more than I anticipated since I got it.

The book covers the following animals:
Dogs
Cates
Small Mammals (Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents)
Reptiles
Birds

However, the majority of the focus of the book is on dogs and cats.

There is an entire chapter dedicated to homemade pet food and all the considerations that are required if you are going to undertake such an endeavor. There is far more to it than I realized to make certain that your animal is getting all the nutrients that they require for good health.

The book covers a lot of simple information like how many calories to feed an animal varied by age and activity level.

There are entire chapters dedicated to Nutritional Management of Animals that are experiencing health problems, these are:

Hospitalized patients
Obesity
Adverse Reactions to Food
Skin and Hair Disorders
Dental Disease
Orthopedic Disease in Dogs
Cardiovascular Disease
Renal Disease
Canine Urolithiasis
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
Gastrointestinal and Exocrine Pancreatic Disease
Hepatobiliary Disease
Endocrine and Lipid Disorders
Cancers
Fatty Acids in Inflammatory Disease
Dietary Effects on Drug Metabolism

If you have a question about nutrition for your dog or cat, the answer is undoubtedly in this book somewhere. If you aren't familiar with medical terminology and don't want to be, this might not be the best book for you. However, if you are a motivated student, you can gain a lot from this book even without a current knowledge of medical terminology. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers that want to make the best nutritional choices for the furry members of their family.

Extremely useful guide to the food-health connection.

Review Date: 1999-03-12
The first thing that impressed me about this book was how immediately useful it is. The minute I opened it I felt as if my eating habits were getting healthier. Turn to any page and start reading and, unless you are already a nutrition expert, you will, within seconds, have enhanced your understanding of the relationship between health and food. Reading this book not only made me a better eater-it made me a better food shopper and enhanced my abilities in the kitchen. Organized like many books of its kind, with sections on the overall connection between diet and health, the particular nutrients, the health properties of individual foods, and preventing and treating specific ailments through diet, this Smart Guide contains nothing but relevant, up-to-the-minute information. It explains the scientific basis behind the nutritional issues without being overly technical, and the engaging writing is free of extraneous motivational psychobabble and New Agey preaching. Also, it includes a hundred, or so, brief sidebars, some with Web URL's and phone numbers, each conveying detailed, relevant information about one aspect of the food-health connection.

Soy Smart Health: for women & men

Review Date: 2005-07-06
Hi,

This is an interesting book.

However they should have spent a bit more time editing the text... as there are plenty of opportunities for laying it out better or expressing ideas more clearly (expected more from a bunch of PH.D's): They tend to repeat themselves a lot in rapid succession.

The book explains the different effects of phyto-estrogens & estrogens very well but they miss the opportunity to tie this in with xeno-estrogens neatly.

This information is very relevant to women with breast cancer who want to know whether or not Soy phyto-estrogens will make things better or worst. It also relevant to women with Estrogen Dominance Syndrome that might be suffering from Endometriosis: You gain a whole new respect and understanding for the balancing role of progesterone.

It even has a few negative things to say about Soy oil (Omega 6 oils).

The book is not just for women... although the author certainly gives this impression.

To balance it up a bit they could have added a section on men... as men too can have high estrogen levels (from xenoestrogens).

However the devil is in the detail with most things... soy as well... and it seems like there's still a bit more they need to explain... and which remains unexplained in this book.

You may not be convinced but you will be better informed by the end of this book.

:-)

The best soy book I've seen.

Soy Smart Health is the best book on soy I've seen so far. Solomon et al have explored areas of soy health benefits I haven't ever considered. Their research is complete and current, with citations as recent as March 2000. This book is definitely one of the best purchases I've made this year. All of my friends have one now.
