Bringing Reality to the Health-Care Debate
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-10
Many who write on the subject of nutrition and health are intelligent, educated and knowledgeable. Honest Nutrition by Ira Edwards is noteworthy because the author writes as a health consumer; he does not have a health product or service to promote. To his credit, Edwards has no bias for or against conventional medicine, alternative medicine or herbal healing. He lays out the benefits, problems and costs of various nutritional, herbal and medical modalities with careful attention to biochemical realities.

Over several decades, Edwards has investigated the authenticity of many scientific studies that are commonly accepted in health and medical practice. His education and professional experience, in biochemistry and in scientific methodology, well qualify him to see through a fraudulent veneer where it exists. Among innumerable subjects, his findings on cholesterol are important to anyone interested in maintaining good health.

Although retired, Edwards has stayed current with scientific discovery. The book is abundantly filled with timely, relevant information. For me, it has been a marvelous resource, dropped into my hands at an appropriate time to help with important (and beneficial) health decisions.

Finally!

Mr Edwards cuts through the hype that passes for nutritional information these days and tells us what the various vitamins and minerals actually do in our bodies. He is honest enough to tell us, unlike most nutritional authors, that he doesn't know everything and can't give answers to everything. I especially like the alphabetically arranged descriptions of nutrients and conditions. At last I understand what those nutrients are supposed to do. Too bad I can't get this kind of honest answer from my own doctor - who seems to be locked into a "SUPR" mentality. This book ought to be required reading for every family physician and every surgeon - before he makes the first scalpel cut!

A refreshingly unbiased attempt to help the reader

Review Date: 2007-03-24
I wish I had got my hands on this book 15 years ago, when I experienced a sudden decline in health and began my search for answers. It would have saved me from several regrettable decisions and given me the understanding I needed to navigate both the health care industry and the world of self-help bookdom with more discernment.

The author is quick to admit that he does not have all the answers, but what he does offer the reader is an laudable attempt to provide unbiased information for the purpose of truly being a help to the reader.

I learned a lot about the pharmaceutical companies, the FDA, the conventional medical establishment, and the nutritional supplement industry. In some areas, my suspicions were confirmed. In others, my naivity was embarrassingly exposed. I especially appreciate how the author shares the information without being out to get one group or the other.

Any book written by a physician is almost assuredly going to be pushing their own biased approach to health care. The fact that the author is not a health care provider makes it easier to trust that he is truly attempting to be unbiased. His credibility on the subject comes not from any medical degree, since he has none, but from years of study to uncover the truth in health care marketing and research claims.

Topics covered include: honesty, bad advice, sources for information, the medical establishment, economic problems, principles of nutrition (that do not involve the food pyramid), deficiencies and supplementation, mental function, and a host of diseases that plague our culture. In all topics, the effect of nutrition on body processes is explained in detail, and approaches offered by both conventional and alternative therapies are explored.

If you are looking for a quick fix to your own health challenges, then this book is not for you. But if you are looking for information that will help guide you toward improved health, I highly recommend Honest Nutrition. It will challenge both you and your health care providers to be slower to throw a band-aid solution at your health problems and quicker to search for the origin and resolution of your particular disease.

What a great read. The author spills his guts out in an effort to help us. How genuine!
If you are not motivated to lose weight after reading this book, nothing will help you! Step by step and pound by pound, he shows you how he finally persevered and triumphed.
Also, he has put together 50 of the best tips that he compiled from researching every diet book and plan, as well as interviewing hundreds of successful dieters. A king of "best of" guide, if you will.
This is truly as good as it gets. This is the best weight-loss book I have ever encountered. You cannot go wrong with this thing--BUY IT!

As genuine as it gets!

I bought both of his books, one for me and one for my father. Since this book is very similar to his other book, The review ends up being very similar. Both books are very original though.

The book begins with the author giving us a series of fun short stories that examine some of his previous attempts to lose weight, but he then analyzes why each diet worked yet ultimately failed. He shows you why fad diets and diet pills truly don't work by citing his real-life experiences. He lost 593 pounds through cronic yo-yo dieting. He then shows you how he finally lost his final 114 pounds in a really interesting and inspiring step-by-step manner. He shows you that he is a regular person, too. That is why this book is so real and genuine. He really captures the fact that most of us have been through similar episodes in life. This part of the book is really intriguing.

The next part of the book is a brilliant summary of the 50 best tips assembles from his real-life trial& error, and countless hours of research, as well as interviewing hundreds of other successful dieters. The beauty of this part of the book is how he takes complicated scientific principles and explains them in such a layman's way citing his real-life testing and the trial & error of others. I have never seen this information explained in such a human and genuine way. You will truly understand what to do and how to do it when you put the book down. That is what separates this book from others--his original way explaining of things! The author is an excellent writer as well!

I truly endorse this book as a sensible plan that can help anyone of all ages! Five-stars from me!

When I read, "How I lost 500 pounds" I intended to just skim it and find here is just another weight loss book among many with nothing new to say. I expected the standard, everything in moderation, eat whole-grains, smaller more frequent meals, eat a helping of fruit at every meal, a list of exercises including how your supposed to space your hands a certain distance on the barbell, blah, blah, heard it all before. But I found I could not put this book down. Made me realize, all those other diet books out there were written by people who have never had a weight loss problem. Bill Phillips...come on! I gave his program a look and realized it was not only a scam, but just a marketing tool to peddle EAS products. Haven't we learned that lesson back in the 80's with Joe Weider & Muscle & Fitness magazine? Cailor has been there and he is no family buffoon, he's the real deal. Buy the book!

Connie Liakos Evers really knows what kids out there need. This bood is written for the adults. I wish we could enable people, kids, teens. adults, to choose balanced meal food items from menus and help people to picture balanced meals and make their choices easier at school or work cafeterias, restaurants, food services of all kinds. There's alot of responsibility in consuming food these days.

I teach an afterschool class to elementary students and I loved this book. It has so much information I can share with the kids. In my class we make a healthy snack together and talk about why it is healthy for us. This book helped me create my curriculum and put together recipes. The students (primary and intermediate grades) really enjoy my class because of it. I highly recommend this book, especially because Connie Evers is a Registered Dietitian. The knowledge she shares is superior to any other book I have read. I also highly recommend her workbook as well as her website. Great references and information for anyone interested in children's nutrition!!!

I lead nutrition workshops for parents but I am now working up a class for kids. Evers book is just what I needed. The book has lots of ideas for making nutrition education fun and interesting for children. She gives lots of activities and crafts that can help illustrate the concepts she presents.

As a homeschooling mom, I like the way nutrition education can be incorporated into math, language arts, history, science, etc. However, if your child is in public school, Evers has lots of ways you can work with the school to get more nutrition education and healthier food in the cafeteria.

I also love all the book recommendations given. Evers lists a bunch of titles that will encourage children to try new and different foods.

One thing that is slightly dated now is that Evers spends a lot of time on the food pyramid, which has now been replaced. (However from what I understand, this new system is rather complicated so for children the food pyramid is probably much easier to understand.)

This book is a great resource for parents and teachers.

Who knew low fat could taste so good. He is the Emeril of Australia. Having spent three months in Melbourne, we stumbled upon his restaurant, and had a chance to eat his food, as he likes it prepared. The cookbook captures his healthy approach and his own weight-loss plan with meals that are sure to become classics. Nothing I have had has disappointed!!

I had no idea what to eat during pregnancy, so I thought I'd do soome research. Apparently, there are things to eat--and eat lots of--and things to stay away from. This book explains all that and more. It's really easy to read and understand, too. I also liked and would suggest You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life.

Like most pregnant women, I have no clue as to what to eat and all I "really" want is "bad", so I was glad to have came across this book which lays everything out on the table--literally! It's really helped me make better food choices. Another book I liked and has helped is You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life.

Great book for prego women! Essential information in here!

I bought this book after listening to the author on a podcast show for pregnant women. Even tho I had found a lot of information about what to eat when I'm pregnant (and what NOT to eat), this book cut thru the confusion, organized the information and made clear to me what was important.

I also learned from this book that being pregnant does NOT mean that I am eating for two, and in fact, clarified exactly what I need to add to my diet, when, and how much, during each stage of pregnancy. Thanks to this book, I knew when it was important to eat certain foods, and I learned not to indulge.

I have not gained too much weight during this pregnancy and I think that is because of the information I learned reading this book.

Also, it's worthwhile to mention that the author includes recipes in the second half of the book. Great stuff!

I came upon this book by accident. I had just lost lots of weight doing the Atkins diet, which I do not recommend as your cholesterol will shoot sky high! The author lives near me ( I don't know him) so I thought I would look at the book. I ended up buying it for its simplicity and clear focus. It certainly is practical, entertaining and easy to follow. The suggestions on eating, exercise and meditation are clear ideas that anyone can follow. i was amazed to find that I actually have been doing much that is in the book.
This book is a great coffee table book that you will pick up and utilize. I gave my copy to a friend who needed it, so I guess I will have to go to the store and get another one or purchase one here on amazon. Thanks Dave for a nice book.

This is a terrific book, especially for the cook who wants to know more about healthful cooking techniques. I have applied these techniques to the foods that my family & I enjoy. The book offers a wide range of recipes that are unique, interesting, and fun to prepare. There is a section on nutrition that explains healthful eating in easy-to-understand terms. Also a section on wine with food. I loved this book, it is written in a friendly tone with a great deal of personal insight on food from the authors. Most of all the recipes are superb!

I am a Holistic Health Nurse in private practice and I also am currently a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (a coursework I would highly recommend for all people who want to be well and feel more joy in their life).
The journal is an excellent vehicle to express your inner feelings as they relate to nourishing yourSelf, body, mind, and spirit. It is a wonderful template to access those things that are paramount to health and healing. I highly recommend you buy one for yourself and one for your best friend, now! Shine On, Donna Cetroni

For me, this journal took the concepts of a food diary and a personal journal and brought them together to really create a whole health and personal growth tool. I love the Circle of Life exercise and the Wish List. I also really like the approach of beginning each day with gratitude and intention and ending each day with a loving thought. Overall, this journal has inspired me to keep in closer touch with my choices and my goals without the boredom I typically encounter when I attempt to keep a "food diary".
