This is the third book I have bought from this author and I would not hesitate to buy additional books from him. I have several weight training books but this one is the simplist to follow and understand. Although you probably won't get a Mr. Universe body from his workouts, you will definitely get toned (which is what most of us are looking for) and it gives you detailed info and pictures on each exercise. Great book for men and women alike. I can definitely see and feel body definition I never use to have.

I did his "Workouts that Work" book religiously and it was the best easiest way to get in shape ever. I dance, do yoga and walk a lot but was never totally in shape until I lifted weights. I like having a guide at the gym so I can just check off what I did and forget about it. The diet portion of this is easy too. No recipes or complicated scheme. Just making sure to eat more often with protein in each small meal. I'm looking forward to getting back in great shape and getting strong with this great book.

I am 42 years old. Not a gym junkie and didn't have the first clue how to go about getting back the body I had before 2 kids. This is truly everything you need to lose weight, get in shape and feel great about yourself. It has the workout rountines and the menu plan all laid out for you. There is no guess work. It is written in simple terms even I could understand.

I love the fact that this book is spiral bound-especially since this book has so many pages. Makes it really easy to bring to the gym and USEABLE! I can lay it on the floor and follow along.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a piece of their youth back!

Highly recommended. My wife got this book few weeks ago and we both love it. She for the tips and the other mothers stories and myself for being able to cook meals that suites her fluctuating moods. Its sure does make life easy to know that you there is a solution for every mood. Also like the guidelines on how to stock up so that we never run out of food, this is key. Great book :o)

I really love this book for various reasons. What initially turned me on to it was the recepies and the variations GENIUS.... What's more the recipes are currant and hip and are what I am used to eat when I go out and not recycled. LOVE the tips and the real mothers stories. The Intimacy the author created by sharing herself and the other mothers stories gave such a personal atmosphere I felt very cozy as if this book was written just for my needs.
I am a second time mother and finally there is a book that is written by a Mother to a Mother who knows what it is to be pregnant and not by some professional PHD or some nutritionist, I like that.
On my first child I ate everything I wanted and it took me a some time to get back to my pre weight. Although I am not a big cook, I am this time around going to cook more and watch my weight with moderation and truly feel this book is a good companion.. My daughter LOVED the Jam dot cooies. They were easy to make healthy and she gobbels them up, its a great snack for all of us. My husband was really impressed with me (actually so was I) when I did the herb roasted chiken. Once again It was easy to make, and was delicious. I also did the variation of a few as well, it was great, made me feel that I can actually do this and also that I can cook....

Although cooking has never been my strength being pregnant I question twice what I eat I looked for something that will give me easy recipes I can try making myself. I never imagined that there would be a cook book that will offer me easy recipes that I can adjust to how I feel that day, truly genius! I wish this book was available when I was pregnant with my first daughter. The recipes are easy and they are really delicious. I cant wait to try them all,and of-course all of my pregnant friends are getting a copy
LOVE IT!

This useful book provides detailed nutrition information, preparation tips, storage tips, etc. for a huge variety of foods. For instance, after finding persimmons on sale at the grocery store, but not really knowing how to tell if they are ripe or how they are best eaten, I consulted this book and found all the answers! The book also explains what phytonutrients are present in the different foods and what health benefits they may provide. I highly recommend it!

This book has TONS of information on an enormous range of foods. It lists and describes varieties, health benefits/myths/concerns, nutritional information, history, and serving suggestions for everything from apples and asparagus to flour and sweeteners. I bought pasilla peppers at farmer's market today, and looked them up to see how they compared to anaheims in terms of flavor and heat. It's a very convenient resource.

I was recently diagnosed with type I diabetes, and this book has become absolutely essential to me. I can look up how many calories are in an avocado and how many carbohydrates are in a persimmon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to control their diet, or is just curious about their food.

Dr. Bell's Wellness Prescriptions ia a clear and easily digested book providing a common sense guide to good health. The book contains the latest medical research and provides real life examples that make it an easy read. Readers learn that they have far more control over their health than they might think. It was nice to hear from a Dr. who clearly would rather educate you than treat you.

I read this cover-to-cover in only a few sittings, which should suggest one way it stands out: Most health-care books aren't nearly this readable. Dr. Bell makes his points clearly, using lots of anecdotes and colorful language, and he provides numerous easy-to-follow suggestions. Perhaps most important, he's highly credible throughout. He sticks to evidence-based medicine and explains what definitely works, what might work and what does not work when it comes to maintaining and improving health. If you follow even one of the book's many suggestions, you'll more than get your money's worth.

Simple truths should prevail over medical myths

Dr. Bell has written a short encycopedia of medical truths for an intelligent reader who has become disillusioned with dangerous fads, nostrums, and ineffective panaceas. It is not the physician who will can protect us from disease and disability - it is ourselves. 21st century medicine has finally endorsed the belief that decisions in health care must be EVIDENCE BASED and not derived from personal anecdotes and uninformed fears. The author has clearly demonstrated that he has not only grasped current research in his field but also can convey it in a stimulating and an accurate way.

The book is an excellent resource, but is well overdo for an update, which William J. has confided to me that he is more than willing to do, if the publisher ever expresses such an interest.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes nearly 10 years ago. And I found this book very useful and practical. Medical understanding of diabetes is always changing, and this book is a good update for me on the nutritional end. It's even helped me win a couple of arguments with a nurse who is "close" to me, but hasn't studied diabetes since nursing school! Excellent value, and I've recommended it to the nutritionist with whom I work.

Whether you've just been told you have diabetes or have lived with it for years, there is something for you here. The writing style is easy to understand, and the ideas are reasonable and practical. There is a lot of good information here, and it is presented in a style that felt like I was connecting with a person, a friendly dietician who understood my confusion and frustration. The author recognizes the fact that people will need time to make changes and helps diabetics find a food plan that they can use with the whole family without agonized screams about serving cottage cheese and carrot sticks for dinner. :) I've bought other books that are either too academic or have meal suggestions that I'd never use. After using some of the ideas in this book, I was able to get my glucose levels into the normal range without too much trouble or eating food I don't like. I also lost 15 pounds to boot without really trying. :)

A sensible, balance approach to a healthy heart.

Review Date: 2007-09-29
As a former Health and Science Editor for American Medical News, I can heartily recommend "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Cholesterol." Dr. Devries offers a wonderful array of information and advice in plain English -- from what to eat and how to exercise to how to understand medical test results and work with your doctor.

One of the best features of this book is the way it merges traditional medicine with alternative approaches. This book does not present a lecture from a know-it-all conservative, traditional doctor or a treatise from a fringe physician on how health food and yoga will save your life. Instead, this book presents a balanced, reasonable approach to strong hearts and healthy lives by a traditionally trained physician who is open to new ideas, as long as they are proven and sensible. Dr. Devries integrates the best of both worlds, traditional and alternative.

Another appealing feature is the fact that some sections and chapters are clearly aimed at those who just want a simple explanation, while other sections and chapters provide detailed information backed up by rigorous research and thoughtful medical expertise for those who want to understand the science behind the suggestions.

Everyone should be as fortunate to have Dr. Devries as his or her personal doctor. The next best thing would be to read his book...and take it to heart.

The manner in which Dr. Devries writes makes heart disease and cholesterol a "a no brainer" to understand is superb. Dr.Devries has been my health coach for the past 4 years. His understanding of the subject has made the world of difference in my understanding my own health. Through his methods, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are closely monitored and controlled. I am very grateful for his medical care and expertise which is now offered to the world through this book.

Review Date: 2007-06-25
A REMARKABLE guide for prevention and personal empowerment! Finally a source which covers a wealthy spectrum of heart healthy directives and wisdom embracing the most timely and best of Integrative Medicine.

DR. Devries presents valuable heart healthy information on every page including many helpful charts and guidlines. He also includes very informative references and resources. The book is comprehensive and oriented to achieve the most favorable results in a practical manner. Doing the advice is becoming and being more healthy. The sections entitled "TAKE THIS TO HEART" at the end of each chapter provide the salient points on which to take action.

Dr. Devries is to be commended for going a different way and presenting a program which is AUTHENTICALLY prevention oriented,a rare find in the all too often mechanistic medical model which dominates the "health" system. His holistic practice is humanizing, personalizing, and consequently truly healing in nature. The book is in layman's language and an easy read.

HEARTILY recommended!

Your Personal Life

Review Date: 2007-07-17
Every week yet another diet or health fad comes on the market. One says that we should become strict vegetarians while another says high protein is the trick. The only thing these programs seem to have in common is that they suggest that this simple program will work on everyone (and doesn't) and that the creator of the fad makes a lot of money off of us. The end result is more confusion about what kind of nutrition is actually healthy.

Your Personal Life immediately takes a different approach, a more scientific approach. At the onset of this book, the author states we aren't what we eat but what we retain from what we eat and drink. This actual amount that each of us retains is individual depending upon not only our genetics, our body type, the amount of exercise we do, etc but also depends upon our unique body chemistry. In other words, we may have deficiencies or excesses of particular minerals, vitamins, and contaminants that affect how our bodies work. Thus, our diet must reflect these important requirements.

Your Personal Life is definitely not a simplistic one size fits all cure for health. I have to admit that I sometimes found the material in this book quite heavy and somewhat overwhelming. However, as I gain more understanding of the concepts, I gained a good deal of information. I particularly liked that the author set out the various tests (complete with explanations about what the results actually mean) that can be done to scientifically figure out the right diet for each of us.

***** The 'Two' Wisemen Write the Bible on Body-Mind-Spirit Wellness *****
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-05

An incredible book sharing the lessons-learned in body-mind-spirit wellness promotion. For me, the key insight was that I had been using what I call a "vitamin buffet" approach to supplements, picking and choosing from the health food store smorgasboard. I'd load up on the sale items and shovel them down every day as if that would help me boost my immune system? Instead I became toxic and felt like I was aging faster than the speed-of-light. Then I followed the advice in this bible on nutrition and exercise and became a minimalist -- taking a high-quality organic multiple vit/min, and others that are discussed in the text, cut back my food intake as well, and recovered that "glow" from my youth. Now I am fed and fit optimally and I love my new life. Buy this book and begin your journey into well-being too!

Your Personal Life: Measuring What Your Specific Body Needs To Live Lean, Long, Strong & Better by clinical bionutritionist, wellness practitioner, author, speaker, and bodybuilder Greg Tefft (with the assistance of author, songwriter, parenting expert, and president of the Angel Mind media company) is an articulate guide to personalized nutrition based upon over sixty years of medical nutrition research. Chapters explore why most touted diet systems are ineffective for long-term weight loss (for one thing, far too many diets come in a false one-size-fits-all concept), techniques for making positive and beneficial changes in lifestyle and eating habits, how to apply nutrition therapy and toxin elimination therapy, how to determine one's own nutritional prognosis and take control of one's health, and much more. Written for lay readers, Your Personal Life translates advanced health professional wisdom and technical concepts into solid, easy-to-follow guidelines for improving quality of life. Highly recommended.

Dr. Tefft has written an excellent book on how to deal with the issues that are affecting our health as a result of changes in our lifestyles. These changes have caused our environment to be altered from being a natural and wholesome one to a fast paced, stressed out, toxic one.

"Your Personal Life" empowers you to take charge of your own wellness. You learn about what your body needs and then make a plan based upon meeting those needs. This is not a typical diet book that offers a generic plan for you to follow. I have been following plans like that for years and I find that they haven't worked for me. The latest health craze that I am trying is costing me over $200 a month in supplements.

After reading this book, I realized that I am probably taking supplements that I don't need, since I haven't been tested to see if I have a deficiency. I am excited to see that Dr. Tefft recognizes the importance of each individual following a nutrition/lifestyle plan based upon their personal needs. These needs are determined by some basic tests to check for food sensitivities and toxic accumulations.

Personalized nutrition is also referred to as orthomolecular nutritional medicine. Dr. Tefft defines it as "the science of what each unique body actually retains from what is directly consumed by that body." In this plan, an individual is tested to see what nutrients and toxins are in their body. Next, a medically proven, customized plan is developed from this information. This includes diet and supplements. Each individual is able to take back control of their life. They can overcome food sensitivities and toxic accumulation by detoxification and following a food rotation plan.

Orthomolecular nutritional medicine allows the body to heal itself. Its number one goal is "to create more energy from less food and drink." This is accomplished by learning how the body can operate at peak efficiency. This plan is scientifically based and with the health benefits achieved it will really pay off for the individual. I highly recommend it for individuals who are serious about taking responsibility for their health.

The Eating Plan That Replaces Dieting Forever!

Review Date: 1998-03-05
Mary & I were introduced to the Zone when on March 31,1997 Mary's Doctor gave her a prescription which read,"Get & read a book called the Zone". When I discovered that our county Library system had 82 people on a waiting list for their 22 copies I went to a local book store where I found 2 Zone books both on the Top 10 list, #6 & #9 I bought both books and went home. After about 2 hours of reading in "Mastering The Zone" I did 3 things: 1.From the more than 150 scientific zone recipes I chose 7 which appealed to both my wife and I and using the ingredients from these 7 recipes created my new grocery shopping list. 2.I boxed up all the food in our house that failed the zone test and gave it away, which was 95% of it 3.I then went shopping with our newly designed grocery list. On April 8,1997 We entered the Zone and and by the end of April Mary had lost 11 lbs and I had lost 11 lbs plus 4" off my 42" waist. The lbs and inches lost were nothing new as we had both done that dozens and dozens of times over the past 30 or more years, but we both lost something this time that we had never ever lost before, our cravings for food and the greatest part of what we feel was at least a small miracle was that we lost our cravings for food the very first day in the Zone. Two examples: Mary dropped excessive coffee drinking that very day and I dropped excessive mayonnaise eating also the very first day. As we say,"No desire for it so why drink it or eat it?" And we don't miss it nor do we feel the slightest bit deprived. Within less than 90 days I had lost 25 lbs and my 42" waist had slimmed down to 32" where it has remained.Mary has been consistently losing 6-8 lbs a month. IT'S TRUE: STAY IN THE ZONE and you will: A.Think better, because in the zone you are maintaining stable blood sugar levels. B.Perform better, because being in the zone allows you to increase oyxgen transfer to your muscle cells. C. Look better, because in the Zone you are shedding excess body fat at the fastest possible rate. D. Never be hungry between meals, because staying in the Zone means your brain is being constantly supplied with it's primary fuel, blood sugar. E. Never have to experience that stuffed, overeating feeling again, because in the Zone there is never a need to over eat, because hormonally balanced eating completely satisfies your body with less food, and F. Every bite you eat tastes better when you are in the Zone, because that's just the way it is when the food your body is getting is balanced hormonally. We don't understand it but we love the results. Living in the Zone is Fun...Easy...And You will love it and never will you be able to keep it to yourself!

His explaination of how food affects your body is an explanation of human physiology than anyone can understand. I recomend it to my friends, patients and colleagues almost daily. Jason N. Cox M.D

Barry Sears' milestone publication is more interesting than any diet book I've ever read. I admit to a bias--it is also the most effective diet I have ever tried! I recall Martin Katahn's books ("The Rotation Diet" and "The T-Factor Diet") fondly, but Sears' style is really more to my taste, my 20-pound weight loss notwithstanding. Dr. Sears explains the dietary regimen of balanced protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake in as much detail as you can stand, but if you just want a jump-start on increased energy and weight loss, he directs you to the "How To" chapter early in the work. I got right on the diet, as recommended by a friend, but went back to peruse the research which led to the findings, and found it very readable, even for a layman. The book includes a few recipes, but the dominant strategy is to discover for yourself what a balanced, energy-efficient diet is all about. As you might guess, I love the diet--I've lost weight steadily without changing my sedentary lifestyle, and I've also managed to curtail my 10-cup/day coffee habit to an occasional cup (i.e., two or three per *week*). The best part is that I was able to refer back to the book to find out why things were working out so well (or when they weren't). I recommend this book to everyone who ever wondered why they fall asleep after lunch, or why they aren't losing weight on a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.

I followed this book's recommended programme for 10 days and felt better than I had done in ages. I'll definitely do it again and would recommend it to others.

The publishing world is overrun with faddy diets lacking an emphasis on balance. I liked the approach of this book at first skim - it incorporates exercises for the mind, use of essential oils and a few exercises. After using it, I definitely felt more healthful and energetic. Whereas my blood sugar level used to rise and fall throughout the day, it stayed consistent by the time I got to the middle of the program. Following the program, I had a reduced craving for sweets and other stimulating foods. Best of all, and the basis of my recommendation for this book, was that I really enjoyed the recipes. They were tasty and varied and light. You never feel weighed down after a meal, just satisfied. One caveat: You need to either put aside time or have someone cook you all these meals. Although the program is thoroughly relaxing, it is also time consuming and most effective when you have no distractions. I tried to repeat the program while I had a lot of projects and other concerns to tend to and I couldn't make it through because of the energy I needed to expend attending to other things. Please don't let this discourage you though! I wish everyone I knew was able to try this program, to experience good health and also gain awareness of the powerful effects of food on your body.
