This book is so well written, and truly is pretty darn "comprehensive", as the title says. The authors start with normal development, and lead you through the evaluation, goal writing and treatment process in such a coherent way. Many examples of actual children really help illustrate their points. Considering the cost of attending a feeding seminar, the price of this book is a good deal. Only wish I had time to read the book from front-to-back (it is over 600 pages).

Excellent resource!

This is an excellent resource that every feeding therapist should own. The authors do not target one pediatric developmental stage but infancy through childhood. They thoroughly review normal anatomy and physiology relating to feeding and swallowing as well as complications and treatment options. The feeding experience is not isolated to anatomy and physiology but recognized as an experience with many psychoemotional and environmental factors.

I purchased Prevention's Your Perfect Weight: The Diet-Free Weight Loss Method By The World's Leading Health Magazine for my mother-in-law. I think it is the perfect gift for the older man or woman. In her case, she wasn't eating enough. We all forget a little as we age so a lesson in proper nutrition could do everyone good. She really loves the book! Being healthy is more important than being rail thin. This is a great book! It is not expensive and would be a good gift for any elderly parent. I can easily give it 5 stars.

Best book that I have. It motivates me and to educates me.

Your Perfect Weight gives you a 52 week planner for your weight loss. Alot of questions that I never thought to ask are answered in this book. It gives charts that are easy to read, examples of how to plan your food each day, and motivative ideas for when you are in the middle of a plateau and not lossing weight. It gives examples of how to change your exercise routine when you get bored, and meal plans for when you are bored of the same foods. This is definitely the best book that I have bought to motivate me and to educate me all at the same time.

As a naturopathic physician, I have a rather extensive library of natural health books. The author's insight into disease, and prevention of disease is particularly insightful. Anyone who suffers from a chronic condition should read this book. Many chronic conditions are covered; but even if your's are not, the information presented is still valuable in the pursuit of overall health. It is truly a gem.

I really liked this book. Lots of great info about how basic minerals effect your body and keep you healthy or make you sick. It gave me lots of new ideas.

It's more than a little gory at times. I guess doing 18,000 autopsies, gave the author sort of a callous view of life. The descriptions of what the Inca and Jack the Ripper did to their captives is not for the weak at heart. Hint: a deficiency of minerals causes strange cravings.

One new idea I really liked was the documentation of zinc deficiency in mothers that become pregnant as a cause of Down's syndrome. Apparently one can demonstrate this in the lab with monkeys or simians. Healthy babies then introduce a zinc deficiency in the diet and get Downs syndrome, then add the zinc back and get normal babies again. Wow!

A second idea: adding rare earths to the diet of mice and other animals extends life span by 2X! Wow, again! Excellent bibliography, but I was unable to locate this one paper on feeding rare earths to get 2X life span.

Excellent basic book.

I highly recomend.

I always liked Joel Wallach's approach to health. He tells it like it is. I like how he disses the doctors who poo-poo nutritional supplementation.

In this book, Wallach lays out all kinds of newspaper clippings from various newspaper articles about doctors and famous people who died at young ages. Those clippings are appropriately placed in the section where the major mineral deficiency was the cause of death, such as chromium for a diabetic coma, etc.

This book is a wonderful source of information on minerals, and their functions. It also lays out all kinds of info on deficiency diseases, and how minerals can help certain ailments.

This section also covers a bunch of different alternative approaches to wellness, such as Ayurvedic medicine, the Dean Ornish Diet, and many others. The information is in depth, and covers a good amount of material for a book focused on mineral supplementation.

This book pretty much has it all, and is a great read if you wish to gain knowledge on the role of minerals in our health and well being.

Burris has my full endorsement. I recommend that all of my associates and clients get his book, do the homework and listen to the reprogramming CD. I personally have benefited from his mind fitness techniques as a individual and especially as a teacher. His methods are easy to learn and implement. They empower you from within, not tell you what to do. Burris is original and brilliant! Truly an 'Aha!' sense of this really works, when I've tried EVERYTHING.

Reprogramming The Overweight Mind is at the cutting edge
Helpful Votes: 50 out of 52 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-07
Kelly Burris' Reprogramming The Overweight Mind is at the cutting edge and one of the most valuable assets I have come across. I should know. I tried and was successful on Atkin's. I loved the thought that I could eat food and still lose weight. But, you know after awhile, you get tired of steak, prime rib, etc. and desire a big fat carb overload. And in fact, that is what I did after losing 20 pounds on Atkins. And soon I was back to my old weight plus a few pounds. As a 55+ male, I felt frustrated and was not eager to start the climb back to monitoring my carbs. So there I was stuck. Again.

When I first encountered Kelly's book, I was skeptical. Another gimmick. Another diet. So I did nothing. And yet, something happened along the way.

I encountered a new mind set. It was NOT done consciously. But I started to look at food differently. I made better choices. I made conscious choices. I started to avoid a few of the key ingredients Kelly pointed out as being "bad" for you. I read labels and found High Fructose Corn Syrup was all over the place...even in one famous person's Old Fashion Lemonade. I stopped putting sugar in my coffee. I drank more water. I found if I bought convenient size bottled water, I drank more. All of these changes were made by me as a willing accomplice. My mind set had changed. And I had a new perspective.

After awhile, I noticed that my pants were loose. That I could bend over more easily. But I didn't pay much attention to it. After all, I wasn't dieting so I figured I was imaging it.

At one point, I decided to get on a scale...and to my surprise, I found I had lost 20 pounds. I had gone from 251 pounds to 231 without any effort. And yet, I did not feel like I had deprived myself of anything. In fact, I felt well fed.

And that is the moment I realized what Kelly was talking about. Reprogramming the Mind. Subconsciously. Indeed, I had done just that without the trauma of dieting, deprivation and all the other things that go along with losing weight. And I have no desire to go back to my old habits.

I don't know about you. But if you were like me...overweight, late 50s, less than optimistic...maybe you should consider Reprogramming Your Mind.

This was the best diet I had ever tried! My sister and I went on this diet back in the mid 80's. She chickened out after a week or so, but I stuck with it and I actually lost 13lbs in the first week. I was so shocked and thrilled that I stuck with it - even though it was TOUGH!! But in the end I lost 65lbs within a year and kept it off until I had my first child in 1992. Five years later I had another child and still haven't lost the weight from the first pregnancy. But that's okay. I loaned the book out and have never gotten it back. I'm doing an out-of-print search for it now and when I find it, I will back on the road again. If you are optimistic about diets, try this one first. You will change your mind quickly and happy weight lost!!!

Fantastic, and it works!

The Rice Diet book helped me to drop 65 pounds eight years ago and keep it off for four years (until I got pregnant again and gained 40 extra pounds!). Now that my baby's weaned, I can't wait to go back on this diet! It's safe, and unlike other diets which try to make food more delicious, this bland diet helps you distance yourself from the love of food (as the author says, we already love food too much or we'd all be thin!). Really well-written and thought-provoking--a good snippet of information on every page.

This really is a very worthwhile book to read, and I feel it is a very healty way to shed some pounds. I could only give it three starts because the serving portion examples were SO limited. You really have to read the author's previous book "Heal Your Heart" to get the full spectrum of food choices for this program. The Q&A section was lacking, and only a few questions were raised and answered. I didn't get a sense of what it's really like to follow a program that is so different from the mainstream diets. Protein is extremely limited, for example. All that aside, I still would recommend buying this book if you are really serious about losing weight and gaining health.

Although relatively small (75 pages), this paperback covers a little bit of everything pertaining to Sibes. From breed standards to training to breeding. For it's price it covers a lot of ground but might not go into the detail one might expect from a larger book. However, for it's size and price I feel it is an excellent book worthy of purchase for any owner of the Siberian Husky.

This small book could not have hoped to cover "Everything..." as it claims, but I have found it to be useful on many occasions. It provides a general guide to almost every conceivable situation and concern, providing the quality of advice a new owner needs. An owner of a new sibe puppy will want to supplement this book, so they should consult their breeder-use an established husky kennel, not a backyard breeder-other texts, and their vet. Other topics, like medical/health and diet, will likewise be covered in more detail in other places. Don't stop with this book but do get it if you are with sibe. And hang on to that leash!

Slow Food Nation: A Socialist Eater's Manifesto

Let me start off by stating that I agree with the essential concept of this book. I think we should all try to slow down, buy locally grown, fresh, seasonal food and cook a few meals from scratch. However, while reading the book something kept striking me as odd. The wording seemed charged, like a propaganda piece meant to demonize modern agriculture and our fast paced society, though Mr. Petrini repeatedly admits that a return to subsistence agriculture could not possibly support the current world population. I thought that maybe it was just the translation then on page 187 I came across the statement, "We do not need the accumulation of wealth, but its redistribution..." Then I realized, it is meant to be bit of a propaganda piece which explains the rhetoric. And, I have to wonder about the first example in the book, the traditional peppers of Asti that are no longer grown in Asti. Peppers are a new world crop and could not have been in Italy much before 1500. Here in America that might seem historic, but in the land of the Roman Empire that is barely out of adolesence. I guess it is okay to pick and choose which local, traditional foods one chooses to wax rhapsodically about.

Slow Food's Petrini continues to evolve

Carlo Petrini has been attempting to preserve a more traditional view of food for a long time, this book lays out his current thinking in a clear and concise layering of understanding food in culture (gastronomy), understanding quality (good, clean, fair food), and the tools to put these ideas to work in the world going forward.
As we reconstitute a food culture based on transparency and quality in the USA and hopefully across the globe, this book provides key ideas related to respect for diversity of food products, respect for food in culture, and respect for the work associated with food that can serve to guide us. This book made me think and laugh, and I recommend it highly.

Marvellous introduction to the Slow Food movement

Review Date: 2007-12-08
More than a reaction to Fast Food's arrival in Italy, Slow Food
has evolved into a global movement encompassing many different actions to improve what we all taste and eat.
It's not about eating well in the privileged, Michelin-starred table sense. It's about recognizing everyone's barriers to eating well and judging the quality of our food on three levels, asking whether it is good, clean and fair. (The book's original title is just that: Buono, pulito e Giusto).
The movement's founder wrote this book to set out a new definition of gastronomy, enumerating some of the issues facing our food supply and helping to turn a thinking eater to positive action.
Beautifully translated, Slow Food Nation is a cogent & readable introduction to what Slow Food is about. Highly recommended!

Carlo Petrini gave a lecture at NCSU in Raleigh earlier this year. His talk was in Italian, but his ideas were universal: if we want happiness and peace, we're going to have to change the way we eat.

The book is fantastic. It is beautifully written, powerful, and balances scientific data and understanding with cultural histories and sensible aestheics. His proposal of a new branch of science, gastronomy, is as revolutionary as Freud's proposal to study the human psyche or David Kelley's efforts to study design as a science.

This book is The Inconvenient Truth for those who eat. But it is also a far more optimistic book, for the solution to the problem of industrial agriculture is to seek out good food, to meet and learn about the farms and farmers who grow it, and the reward is pleasure.

The Introduction by Alice Waters is, like the food at Chez Panisse, a sensual as well as a sensible delight.

This is a great book to buy, read, and then share with others, all around the world.

There are many books on the market about eating right, staying fit, maximizing nutrition, managing weight and consuming with conscience, but Maureen offers us all the best of these PLUS a practical guide to shifting our experience of breaking daily bread from the mundanely physical into the joyfully soulful. By simply opening the way to choosing consciously what nourishes our bodies, Maureen hands us the tools to shift forever our very fundamental core beliefs about nourishment across the board. When we learn to feed only our truth, then only truth will face us wherever we turn. Chew on a copy of Soul-Full Eating and never see life the same way again!

There must be hundreds of books out there about eating in a healthy and sustainable way. Books on how what we eat affects the environment. Books on eating and health. Books on weight and dieting. Books on personal and cultural issues around mealtimes and food preparation. But I have never come across a book that covers all of these subjects in one volume. Maureen has done an amazing job of collecting massive amounts of research and using her personal experiences to write a book that is actually fun to read and easy to understand. This book completely changed the way that I approach food and live my life.

I began this book with the premise that there was little more I could learn about diet and lifestyle regarding cancer. As a former cancer patient, I've read anything and everything I could get my hands on. However, I was surprised to find -- only a few pages into the book -- that there were concepts that I had either confused or distorted over the years. Concise and orderly, this book offers current theories and statistical information on many aspects of cancer prevention in a clear and understandable fashion. But the best part is (because having useful information is one thing, putting it to work is another) the recipe section which offers a wide assortment of really delicious dishes, from simple to exotic. it has actually convinced me -- a serious skeptic -- that it's possible to serve food which is not only flavorful and interesting, but healthful as well.

I received this book during the book tour distribution. As a physician I am basically skeptical about books claiming to reduce cancer rates. I was pleasantly surprised by the scientific accuracy of the text. I've since made at least 7 of the recipes, all of which are wonderful! I have found it difficult to locate cookbooks that include easy, fast recipes with low fat and reasonable flavor. Too often the recipes are easy but the ingredients are hard to find; or, the recipe is easy and the taste is bland. This great book meets all of my needs. I really didn't want to like this book, but I love it! And I learned a lot about nutrition to boot!

This book focuses on great foods that happen to be good.

Having read 4o% of all the recipes I was amazed at how tasty all of them were. The recipes are so favorful that you will find it hard to believe that these recipes are also healthy. I went to a bookstore and studied one recipe (for a complete dinner) made the meal and was beyond pleased with the finished product. The instructions are simple and the explanation of why certain food in certain combos are beneficial made me change my why of eating. This book is a must for anyone who just wants to enjoy a good dinner.
