I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone struggling with an eating disorder. I cried, I laughed and I felt for the author as she and her family struggled with anorexia. I greatly admire the author's strength and have shared it with several friends. Finally, a book that truly displays the struggle an anorexic faces first hand!

I am a 17 year old recovering anorexic and I really enjoyed this book. I have experienced much of the same turmoil as the author and it helped having someone to relate to. Many people let me down along the way also including my school counselors and so-called friends. They just didn't understand what it is like living with an eating disorder. I had counseling which was good, but it reached a point where I realized I needed to help myself. Again, I could totally relate to the author. My parents and good friends supported me all the way. I don't think I would be here without them. Anorexia is a lonely disorder because very few people understand it. This book was good for me. It also gave me continued hope. I admire the author's strength and courage to talk openly about anorexia. I wish the book was longer and had more stories about her daily struggle. I recommend this book!

An inspiring story about Myrtle, an adorable though overweight turtle, who learns how healthy diet, exercise and persistence pay off when she her wins a hurdle race. This story is ripe for today's children who tend to spend more time on video games and TV than physical activity. My kids and their cousins love it.

This book is a great choice for young children. The author conveys a simple message to stay fit by exercising and eating smart through Myrtle, the lovable turtle. This colorfully illustrated book would be an excellent addition to anyone's library as well as their child's classroom or school library.

The text of this story has everything a young reader needs: lots of rhyming, a few "big" words, and a story line that realistically portrays the excitement of track and field, support from friends and a loving family, while delivering a message to eat healthy and exercise.
The illustrations are adorable and humorous.

MY #1 PARENTING RESOURCE

I'll make it short. This book has been a great resource for me. I think it's wrong for people to write a review if they have apparently never read it. It covers so many different philosophies (Montessori,...) not just Waldorf.

A beautiful and practical guide to holistic parenting.

I give this book as a gift to all my expectant and new mother friends. It has chapters on child development, imagination and play, health, and education all from an integrated, holistic perspective. It is filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, practical advice and how-to information on making toys, children's games to play, etc. As a student of Waldorf Education, I recommend this book to all parents of young children who are interested in learning more about the Waldorf philosophy. Helpfully, the author of the chapter on education compares different educational philosophies including Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf), Piaget, John Dewey, Maria Montessori and others. A valuable and enlightening resource -- highly recommended.

Odds are you'll love this book

First, readers of these reviews should be aware that Dan Dugan has made a profession of his near-fanatical opposition to Waldorf education. If he had read this book, he would have found that it integrates many educational perspectives, including Montessori, Paul Goodman, Carl Rogers, Robert Cole, John Holt, Rahima Baldwin, parent-teacher coops, home-schooling, etc. One of the contributors to the book is the editor of the Educational Review.

In my opinion this book is exquisitely designed, full of heart, and manifestly dedicated to opening a ground where adults and children can meet and learn from each other.

This book was passed along to me when I was pregnant with my first son. I wasn't really interested at that time, so I put it away and forgot about it. Over time, I realized how frustrated my son was in a world of plastic toys that broke easily, or didn't stay together to begin with. He was much more content to collect leaves in the park than to play with an action hero. When I became pregnant with my second son, I re-discovered this book and really looked at it. It seemed to validate much of what I was feeling, and I could see that my son had naturally gravitated to this lifestyle as well. This book helped us come up with other ways to make our lives more natural.

This book is not strictly Waldorf type. For example, Legos are suggested as a good open-ended toy in the book, where in a Waldorf setting, tree-blocks might be used instead because the Legos have a cold, sterile feel. This book is a combination of Waldorf/Steiner, Montessori and other "whole child" methods.

It is a great starting point if you want to give your children the best start to life.

I am a book lover, but this is the single MOST USEFUL book I ever bought. This book has quick and interesting information on foods and how they can help you with common problems like diarrhea, muscle spasms, fungal infections, fibroids and lowering your risk of getting cancer. The research is stated and summarized in an interesting and easy to read format. And the food cures work! I frequently use the information from this book to "heal" myself and others. This book can save you from taking OTC and prescribed medication and damaging you liver and kidneys.

What your doctor will not tell you, is in this book.

This book will tell you what your doctor will not. For instance I got kidney stones. I asked my doctor how I could keep my kidneys from hurting, since the kidney stones are still in there and make my kidneys hurt every once in a while. This book will tell you what foods or drinks to stay away from if you have kidney pain.

This book is an A-Z on telling you how to avoid certain foods that trigger pain or what foods to eat to prevent certain problems. It also tells you which foods have which vitamins, in case you are deficent in certain vitamins. I love this book. I am going to give it away to a few people for Christmas.

This book will tell what foods to eat to prevent cancer, why should we eat fiber, how to boost immunity and much much more. I would recommend every household to have a copy of this book.

A great health book

This book tells you lots of information about the food we can get from the supermarket and help us to prevent cancer and why. With every food it lists, it teachs you how to get the most of that food and give you one or two receipt. Don't get me wrong, this is not a receipt book. The little receipt is just for example how to use that food. This book is very informative and also very fun to read. Anybody who looks at health as an important issue can use this book as a reference book.

Salt is the Cause; Not the Solution
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 71 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-27
There's an old Texan story about a Texican who goes into a general store that is having a closing sale. He sees that a whole wall of the store is stacked with nothing but buffalo pucky and salt: bags of buffalo pucky and bags of salt, blocks of buffalo pucky and blocks of salt, shakers of buffalo pucky and shakers of salt. Just buffalo pucky and salt from floor to ceiling (everything's big in Texas). So he says to the store clerk, "Dude, you sure sell a lot of buffalo pucky and salt!" The store clerk replies, "I wish that were the case. The only one selling a lot of buffalo pucky and salt is the salesman that talked me into buying all this."

Like the storekeeper, two things that Americans consume far too much of are buffalo pucky and salt - nearly as much as is consumed by the British [...] Thanks to processed foods, Americans consume 20 to 30 times their recommended daily allowance of salt. And thanks to Bush, Blair, and their friends in the corporatist media who feed a steady diet of buffalo pucky to gullible Americans - greasy morsels such as: the Iraqi people want us in Iraq and the Afghans want us in Afghanistan; that we are rebuilding their countries; that we are helping the Iraqi and Afghan peoples; that the new Iraqi government is a democracy and former Soviet drug lord Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is not a dictator; and the list goes on and on - 80,000 gullible kids join the U.S. military each year and many end up in Afghanistan, Iraq, injured or in a body bag. Both buffalo pucky and salt are detrimental to one's health, financial and otherwise, often giving rise to high blood pressure.

The Gazzaniga family - Donald, Maureen, and Jeannie, do not address the buffalo pucky that serves to camouflage America's slide down the slippery slope to Nazi Germany nor do they address the rapid rise of heart disease by distressed percipient veterans who are in a turmoil over the Hitlerite fascism that has gripped America and is now plaguing the world. Instead they have put together a cookbook full of recipes that tell readers how to skip salt rather than buffalo pucky.

Their book is divided into 8 sections for recipes: Soups, Stocks and Broths, Wild Game Soups, Sandwiches, Sandwich Breads, Salads, Special Salad Dressings, and Spice and Herb Mixes. The recipes sections are followed by a glossary, conversion tables showing the metric units for English measurements (which were banned in England in 1999), a table of ingredients used in this book, and an index.

Most illuminating is a 3 and a half page foreward written by Dr Michael Fowler, Director of Stanford Heart Transplant Program. He says that many people suffering from hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure) are actually suffering from salt poisoning, which in turn contributes to hypertension. For many people, a hormone is doing a Bush-n-Blair to their kidneys, lying and telling the kidneys that the body is dehydrated. If your kidneys believe that you are dehydrated, then they will not release sodium. Sodium then builds up inside you and you begin to feel the effects of salt poisoning. Dr Fowler says "When the heart begins to fail, the kidneys are `signaled' by hormones and nerves to adjust the kidneys to retain sodium, and consequently water. . . the kidney and hormonal systems have incorrectly assumed that the changes detected around the body and especially by the kidneys are the result of the individual being dehydrated" (pp xiii-xiv). Although he doesn't mention having a VQ scan, he does recommend an echo-Doppler examination and a BNP test, "which measures a hormone provided by the failure of the heart that reflects the elevation of pressure caused by salt and secondary fluid retention" (pxiv).

Beginning on page 1 is the section on low-sodium soups. The recipes range from one for apple and cauliflower soup with curry followed by 34 more recipes ending with one for turkey tortilla soup. Section 2 contains 6 stock and broth recipes. Section 3 has 7 wild game soup recipes. Section 4 has 31 scrumpcious sandwich recipes including one for a vegetable calzone. Section 5 contains 19 recipes for no-salt breads, which I can personally testify that light, fluffy bread can be baked without any sodium. Section 6 has 30 salad recipes ranging from Asian chicken salad to Summer cucumber tomato salad. Section 7 has 8 salad dressing recipes. The last section has 12 recipes for spice and herb mixes.

The thing that is most troubling to me about what is going on with out-of-control salt usage and resulting salt-poisoning is the public's reaction, or lack thereof, to it. It seems to me that the public is a little too accepting of whatever advertisers and corporatist media feed them and is too unwilling to research things for themselves. I think the misconceptions harbored by the public about the necessity to use salt are dangerous to their health.

Just as too many of the American public still harbors troubling ideas about soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, so does the public have misconceptions about salt. A huge one is that we need salt so then we grab the shaker and pour it on our food. The truth is that the average American consumer cannot avoid salt - a cup of milk has 80 mg and a slice of bread has 150 mg. In one meal, they surpass 500 mg.

In short, to remain healthy we need less salt and less government intervention! Maybe the Gazzanigas will write a recipe for less government - something like the skip-government recipe book for living a healthy life!

Good recipes; good ideas

The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Cookbook has some really good recipes, but it's just as important that you read the Introductory information;"Straight Talk from A Cardiologist", "The importance of good nutrition for a Healthy Heart", and all the other pages of information. You may learn something you didn't know, or just be reminded of something you did know but hadn't thought about recently.

The recipes tell you how much sodium you're actually adding with each ingredient by showing the information in parenthesis. Example: '1 cup fresh basil leaves (1.696 mg)'or '1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil (trace)'

At the end of each recipe, the calories, sodium, fiber, etc., are all listed per serving.

The authors use brand names, not for advertising, but to make it easier to find appropriately low-sodium ingredients. One drawback: in some cases, the brand named ingredient is no longer available

I am what some people call a "scratch" cook, meaning (I hope) that I rarely purchase prepared foods, and so, although the recipes are excellent, sometimes I just like to scan through the book to get ideas for preparing the winter squash I found on sale, or what to do with all those walnuts I still have in the freezer.

All in all, I would recommend the book to everyone, but especially to those with health problems

Excellent, tasty recipes and great tips and information for those needing a no salt or lowest sodium alternative to regular recipes. My husband was diagnosed with Meneire's disease and needs to stay around 300 mg or less of sodium a day. I was having a difficult time finding recipes to suit this need until I found Don Gazzaniga's books and website. The soups and salads in this particular cookbook are even easy enough for my husband (a non cook) to handle.

Too many people focus on nutrition only when they are feeling run down or ill. To maintain good health at all times, one needs to pay constant attention to the fuel that you provide to your body. The immune system relies on what we eat for the essential nutrients that it needs to combat illness. Good health is a strategy that everybody ought to employ to prevent illness and provide the body with the resources to protect itself.

This is an excellent quick reference guide to find your way amongst all the food and health products and the profusion of supplements available these days. Each entry provides a definition in plain language, i.e. what it is, where it comes from, the form it takes, how to prepare or take it, the medicinal and health benefits and the recommended daily use.

Not only foodstuffs are discussed, as the entries include related matters such as for example the acid-alkaline balance, allergy, antibiotics etc. The entries run from acacia to zinc. The book includes a list of helpful addresses and herbal suppliers in Australia, the UK and the USA and concludes with an index. I also recommend The A o Z Guide To Supplements by Phyllis A Balch and Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible.

excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production

The Omega Rx Zone, by Barry Sears is an excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Dr. Sears successfully translated volumes of leading edge biochemical research into an explanation non-researchers can comprehend, with some sustained effort.

Other books explain the fundamental Omega 6/Omega 3 essential fatty imbalance, but most fail to explain how increased Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) can inhibit excess inflammatory prostaglandin production, by down regulation of the 5 delta desaturase enzyme. In addition Dr. Sears explains how decreasing Arachidonic Acid levels reduces production of numerous inflammatory leukotrienes, produced by LOX 5 and LOX 15.

More importantly, Sears explains how increasing EPA and Decosahexanoic Acid (DHA) can dramatically reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, Osteoarthritis, Emphysema, Alzheimers Disease, High Blood Pressure, Atherosclerosis and other disorders. Sears provides many anonymous case histories illustrating patient improvements with high dose, pharmaceutically distilled fish oil.

Sears also explains cultural variations in essential fatty acid intake which correlate with depression and suicide rates. The Omega Rx Zone is a surprisingly readable explanation of some complex biochemistry and immunology.

Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil by Barry Sears- A somewhat difficult read (too many medical terms) but there are also visual aids that simplify the message and get right to the point. There are obviously many benefits to Fish Oil- I ordered Dr. Sear's recommended oils in both liquid and gel form and after only 3 weeks have noticed a huge improvement in mood. Am hoping to realize weight loss and other health benefits for my family with continued use. Recommend this book, which was recommended to me by a trusted psychiastrist friend.

Excellent omega-3 research

Review Date: 2006-01-08
This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.

There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.

There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.

There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

I have survived a most certain terminal cancer. In fact the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, says that I'm the only one to have survived in the whole world.

But, as an aftermath, I have severe chronic pain because my brain has rewired itself due to the horrible pain I went through fighting the cancer. The condition is referred to as the Gate Theory. It now can be seen on MRI's. It took me 6-months to find the right doctor to treat it. He's been a pain specialist for 17 years and belongs to a group of doctors who rely on "MD Evidenced Nutrition" to understand what "natural" things work.

He put me on a heavy dose of Morphine to counter the pain, but he also put me on Fish Oil, not just any fish oil, but the oil referred to in this book, and I started thinking better and have taken on some minor work as a result. It's almost been a miracle.

Long_chain-fatty-acid-3, pharmaceutical grade, has done wonders. Because of this book I now understand why.

Many doctors assisted Dr. Sears in the writing of this book so that civilians, like me, can understand it. It's not a "fad" book at all. Just look in the back and you will see over 100 pages of clinical references backing up what Dr. Sears states in the book.

It's a must have to stay well and a must have to survive a serious illness.

I second hal's review - i had this book when it came out in the 70's. Don't know how it got away from me - probably loaned it to someone. But I've followed its advice, loosely, over the years and through 3 or 4 treasured bowls that got chipped, cracked, or whatever, and replaced. Now and then I've told people about it - "...there was this book, called One Bowl....". today it occurred to me to check Amazon to see if it's still available, and, Yay! It is! Into the ol' cart!
PS - my current bowl is an Oxo - Amazon carries them in Kitchen. White plastic doesn't have the ambience of raku, but I'm not one who looks down on plastic - matter of fact I'm grateful for it! As with everything, if you want it to have nice vibes, GIVE it some!

A Path Back to Trusting Our Bodies

This book is a classic food book. It's first manifestation was way back in the 70s, a thin volume that nevertheless was packed with wisdom about how to get back in touch with our bodies and our nutritional needs. Nearly 30 years later its prescriptions, or perhaps I should say "non-prescriptions," still hold as true as ever. The author tells us, in a warm but informative way, how to read our bodies inner messages about what we need to stay healthy. The key is eating from one bowl and paying attention in some very unusual ways--at least unusual in today's culture--to foods that "hum," for example, and how we can make use of this information for making healthy choices. I think that one of the greatest contributions this book makes is that it teaches us how to make choices from the inside out--choices that bring us closer to our bodies and closer to ourselves.

An interesting book

This was an interesting book. The premise is that by eating all meals in a mindful manner, while holding the bowl in your hand and eating alone, you will transform not only your food intake, but other areas of your life. I think that there are many lessons that can be taken from this book, especially for those attempting to eat more intuitively and live life with more consciousness. I don't see being able to adopt the one-bowl method as a lifestyle unless you live alone or have a family who does not mind doing the same. Many of the books that the author recommends for further reading have been out of print (he acknowledges this in the book) since the 70s. This whole book just kept reminding me of something that might have come out of the Esalen Institute in the 60s.

So, will this totally work for the majority of people living in modern society in the new millenium? Probably not. Can you get some good ideas and find exercises that might help you on your journey to more mindful living? Yes, I think so. It's definitely worth reading.
