More than I was expecting in a very good way...Review Date: 2003-08-01
Don't underestimate this book--it's greatReview Date: 2001-11-04
From the Feng Shui book we regularly make the peanut noodle vegetables; the chickpea curry (mentioned in another review), and the grape gazpacho. There are a couple other stand-bys... but we're also up to try new ones all the time.
There are some pretty goofy "theme" cookbooks out there... and, on the surface, this may seem like one too. But don't be left out--it really is good.

Yin, Yang and the Unwanted Dinner GuestReview Date: 1999-04-11
So there I was with a few cans and a little over a pound of ground turkey meat. I rifled through my recipe books and came across one that I wasn't even aware of: Elizabeth Miles' The Feng Shui Cookbook. And there on pg. 167 was a recipe for Quick Chickpea Curry (containing the ground turkey). While the recipe promised to warm my qi and creative energy, I was glued to word quick.
Well in less than 20 minutes I had achieved both. The curry was fab, sprinkled with yogurt and cilantro. Our dinner guest went back for seconds and then thirds. And the conversation was robust. The Feng Shui part achieved its goal in spite of my cynicism.
Since I have enjoyed a number of the other dishes with other guests. Miles' text is as strong as her recipes. She has carefully crafted a book which tells you how certain food can feed certain moods and inspire different reactions. And this makes for immensely edible thoughts and results and of course, food.

The abundance of questions with thorough explanations is the strength of this book. An understanding of electolytes including urine electrolytes will be gained from the study of this text.
The target audience is really the physician with an already good grounding in acid-base disorders. It will allow one to build on past knowledge and to solidy any foundation that has already been established. I am really and truly impressed with this book and I refer to it often.

Food Safety for EveryoneReview Date: 2007-10-21
But the biggest strength of this book is the author's ability to translate all the information into practical and actionable advice. The book contains a series of checklists that you can photocopy and stick it in your kitchen.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about food safety.

During the last days in 1992, at the height of the Christmas season, several people on the west coast began to succumb to a lethal food-borne infection. Most of the unfortunate victims were children who had eaten hamburgers at a Jack in the Box restaurant. Toddlers who came in contact with the children who had eaten the burgers were also infected. It infected over 700 people in Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada. The really heartbreaking part of this whole mess was that several of the youngest victims died an unusually cruel and agonizing death, and a lot of those that lived have had to have repeated intestinal surgery and extended kidney dialysis, many will be infected for the rest of their lives. Food borne illnesses can happen at home also, and can be just as fatal and that is why this book is so important to have in our kitchens. More than 600 food borne diseases are known about today. Food alert provides everything that we need to know to protect our families
1) Learn about the 20 most causes of food contamination in your kitchen. 2) What steps you can take to lower the risk of food borne illness. 3) The causes of food borne disease. 4) How to avoid buying, handling, or eating contaminated food. 5) How to tell if you might be suffering from a food borne illness.
A very informative book that will open our eyes about what we are preparing and feeding our families and ourselves. This is an excellent book to have in our kitchens. Get informed now.
Protect your family - Learn from this bookReview Date: 2003-08-29
Proof of Dr. Satin's wit shows through while debunking myths and passing on advice.
-If anybody insists that a little dirt is good for you, take them out to the garden and have them swallow a thimbleful of the stuff.
-When you are finally sure you can eat off the floor, make sure you do not!
If you can stand to take a critical eye at your own food prep and local restaurant, this book will help you avoid the dangers in your food. Protect your children, pregnant and elderly with the ideas you will garner from this text.
This is a very readable and a very sobering book. Get it!Review Date: 1999-08-26

Excellent resource for strengthing our bones!Review Date: 1998-10-15
Finally something I can believe and followReview Date: 2006-04-24
With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart. I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do. And the recipes look great. I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.
I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".
I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss. Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines. Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensate as efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35
She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't). This information is fascinating.
I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

Food, Mood and MoneyReview Date: 2005-08-10
first copy of Food, Mood and Money five years ago, I was excited to find how all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. I was excited to learn how what we eat affects our moods and our ability to reach our full potential in today's world. It made perfect sense to me and I found it to be true and effective. After my first purchase of Food, Mood and Money I went back to
school and have achieved so much more in these last five years than I ever believed was possible. It still amazes me when I think of it. I have just bought my second copy, and I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a dynamic, successful human being by overcoming anxiety, apathy and shyness.

An absolute MUST if you plan to celebrate "Talk Like a Pirate Day" (September 19th). http://www.talklikeapirate.com/ Not too bad for 2 guy who really weren't trying to create a world wide phenomenon - but did.
Ok now an English translation.... Nah. Buy the book and figure it out for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

But this many years down the road, I have to say, grudgingly, that there are many plusses to this book. The recipes are nutritious, delicious and *solid* in a culinary sense and the directions are clear and easy to understand. The recipes are decidedly Asian in nature. In my area most are easily available with the possible exception of dashi soup stock and tamarind paste which would require more of a hunt...
Several recipes stand out as ..well...outstanding. Berry balsamic parfaits (try it over vanilla ice cream with mint sprigs, unbeleivablely good)Seared salmon with horseradish butter (actually the horseradish butter is a winner all by its lonesome) easy and delicious. Chicken soup for a cold is a very good asian soup soup stock with the addition fo ginger and chilies. Adding your own touches makes it a whole soup meal for company... just pass around accompiments...
There is a lot of feng shui information in the beginning. Some I found interesting. Where is the best place in my home for the kitchen? What if it wasnt there? How to set up the kitchen so I didn't eat too much? (okay, i liked that part)...The yin and yang of eating...
There are different options on changing the recipes thru out the book, I like that. And how to serve the dishes. The book is more square than rectangle and is a hardcover that lies flat (yay!) The binding is in very good shape after all these years. It does tend to open to the recipes i have used more frequently at this point tho.... the paper isnt wipable unfortuantely...soy sauce stains from earier dishes are here and there. The color of the paper is a nice off white, very easy on the eyes... the pages are a bit thin, you can see shadows of the other pages through them. Ah well, you cant have everything...
There is a removeable and cleanable attractive book jacket and the artwrk inside is tastful with and asian flair... no bok choy running away from dancing knives thankfully!
Thinking back to my original objection, I was wrong. This was an excellent gift and an excellent cookbook. It's smaller size would make it an excellent addition to a themed gift basket with an asian flair (like some dried noodles, soy sauce, dried mushrooms, dashi stock, mirin...all inside a big wok!)
