Vegetarian experts Poneman and Greene have written the perfect book for harried parents who want to do the right thing but dread the consequences... Well organized and written in entertaining prose, this book offers sound facts about the health benefits to kids of plant-based diets, citing such trustworthy sources as the American Council on Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association. Poneman and Green have humorous, practical, and insightful advice for wary parents. This is one smart guidebook, because it addresses the key topic on a parent's mind-how your child's decision is going to affect you-and offers the most practical advice to date about helping your kid make an effortless transition to a plant-based diet.

This book is full of simple facts on how to be a healthy vegetarian teen. It helped me understand how EASY it is to get all the protein and iron I need every day. I liked learning about all the famous athletes who are vegetarian. This book is also great because it's easy to read and important information is shown in simple charts and tables. After reading this book, I feel much more educated about my decision to give up meat.

Not only is this book a goldmine of great information and inspiration, it's light-hearted! There is no preaching here.

My husband and I have always thought about becoming vegetarian but have often wondered how to deal with our three children. This book has given me a great deal of insight. So, yesterday when my 8 year old said, "maybe I should become a vegetarian", I had the info I need to get started!

I especially love Debra's and Emily's humor woven throughout the book. I enjoyed "What, No Meat?!" from cover to cover. You may not be interested in becoming vegetarian and that's ok - this book is still worth a read. The recipes will make it easier to get to the five veggie servings per day that most of our kids are not getting.

Read it, you'll like it!

A fun and useful guide for parents---and others

I started skimming this book and ended up reading right through it. It's entertaining and full of useful info. With a vegetarian teenage boy in the house, I wanted to make sure I had the whole "how to get enough protein" issue covered. I found plenty on that, and also on calcium and iron and other health issues. There are lots of recipes I want to try, especially for holiday meals, and there are good suggestions about eating out. I like what they say about how to handle the etiquette issues, like dealing with invitations to dinner parties, and how to avoid alienating friends and family. Over all, I think this is a really practical, helpful guide for parents of vegetarian kids-and also for anyone considering becoming a vegetarian!

A great calendar for yourself or to give as gifts to loved ones. We all can use this calendar as an every day fun and helpful reminder to take care of yourself. With a nice design layout, this calendar looked great on my fridge all through 2007 and I'm getting the new 2008 one for myself now!

I like calendars with cute kittens just as much as the next girl, but this year I want to work on being the cute one. So I figure why not get a wall calendar that helps me meet my goals? This calendar has a lot of good health tips, but my favorite part is the recipes. I also like the check box for each day that I am physically active because exercise is just as important as nutrition.

It's easy to slip into bad habits, even if you start out with a head of steam to eat better, get more exercise, and generally take better care of yourself. This Calendar provides reminders and support. It contains recipes that actually work and taste good. It's colorful and fun so that the reminders aren't ignored or perceived as "nagging".

I thought I knew how to handle high cholesterol, but this book taught me stuff I didn't know I didn't know. Besides a good treatment on self-help options, it has a nice overview of different cholesterol-lowering drugs that gives me the language to be able to discuss these issues intelligently with my doctor. She writes in a friendly, accessible style but still goes into fairly good detail about specific items that are easy to skip if they don't pertain. (For example, I thought her advice on how to handle a cigarette addiction was great, but I don't smoke.)

In my last physical exam, my blood tests showed that I have high cholesterol for the first time in my life. I wanted to learn about high cholesterol before my appointment with my doctor to discuss treatment. I read several books on the subject and found this one to be the best! Dr McGowan explained what cholesterol is in terms I could actually understand. Besides that, she covers all areas that affect your cholesterol level with suggestions on how to lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. Specific topics covered include: Diet, Supplements, Exercise, Quit Smoking, and Medications. After reading and studying this book, I feel ready to discuss my options intelligently with my doctor. I wish there were more practical and down-to-earth books on this subject....like this one. Most books about cholesterol read like they are written for doctors and scientists instead of the common people like me.

She does it again!

Mary McGowan,M.D., well known and highly respected expert on the treatment of lipids, previously wrote an extremely helpful book titled: "Heartfitness for Life".(Read the customer reviews for that book!). Among the many areas she covers are treatment for homocysteine, for which many physicians don't bother to test, and for LPa,which is "badder" than the "bad" cholesterol,LDL. Too many physicians have no idea what LPa is, and some actually argue against testing for it, as they have no idea how to treat it. In this her latest book, she adds additional information on lowering LPa. The book is full of new, clearly explained practical information. I can't recommend it too highly, for anyone, beginner or long time learner having concerns about their lipid status. It should be required reading for cardiologists, internists, and family physicians, who could use this book as a resource for their patients, and in many cases for themselves.

I received the book on a Friday and by Saturday evening I had completely read this book. Not only is this book easy to understand, it is motivating and uplifting. I think its the concept of goals-- why should we approach our "Wellness" plans any differently than our financial plans. They both require short-term and long-term goals. Over the last three weeks I have followed the program, which I customized for myself, and I have lost about 4 pounds and I am now going to the gym three times a week and doing cardiovascular workouts for 45 minutes (that was unheard of for me a month ago), but I realize to reach my goals I've got to do these things. Active Wellness teaches you to realize this and helps to give you the inspiration you need to get going. I am truly pleased with this book. It has even taught me how to manage my stress in my daily dealings through meditation and visualization. It truly is an mind-body-spirit connection to achieving any goal for yourself. Definitely worth the read and implementation into your life.

This is a great book for taking control of your health!

My brother and I take care of my eighty-year-old mother. She has
diabetic neuropathy and can't walk. But she's a good kid and
we take care of her. This book has helped. Although the object of the book at first seems to be to develop a care plan; it really is a book of primary skills that you need in caregiving.
The book is best because you are not overwhelmed with 465 ways
to help your loved one. This is a primary and basic skills book.
Buy this book if you are new at caregiving and don't know where to start. Because the American Medical Associarion wrote it, I imagine that it would be good for all caregivers to buy it. I just love this book. It's like a Boy Scout manual. It's user-friendly for your brain. And sometimes simplicity can do more good that needless complications and theories. Thank you and I wish you luck.

If you're trying to learn about amino acids this book is a good place to start. At just over 100 pages it's a bit short. For instance, the amino acid serine is covered in seven lines. It's also approaching 20 years old. Having said that it still provides a lot of useful info. And combined with "The Amino Revolution" by Robert Erdmann, PH.D., it can give you a pretty good idea of the potential benefits of amino acid supplementation. There's so much more to learn on this topic and I'm still waiting for the definitive amino acid book. Unfortunately, most doctors don't have a clue.

Healing with amino acids
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-05
This excellent book is a valuable guide to the therapeutic use of amino acids. It explains how amino acids function as the building blocks of protein, and lists the metabolic paths of the amino acids, the qualities of the individual amino acids and the disease states in which amino therapy can be helpful.

The author discusses the essential aminos (that the body needs to get from food) and the non-essential ones (that are made in the body), and how these relate and interact with one another. The co-factors (vitamins, minerals and trace elements) of the individual amino acids are covered in detail.

The author provides valuable information on the therapeutic application of amino acid therapy, including a summary of therapeutic dosages and cautions. Some of the uses include treatment of depression (DL-Phenylalanine, L-Tyrosine), insomnia (Tryptophan), cold sores (L-Lycine), detoxification (L-Cysteine, Glutathione) and wound healing (L-Arginine and L-Glutamine).

An appendix provides the amino acid content of certain common foods (besides meat, other excellent sources are eggs, milk, yoghurt and chocolate). The book also provides the contact details of various organisations and contains a thorough index. I also recommend he Amino Revolution by Robert Erdmann and Meirion Jones.

If you think that the sales people at your pet store, or your veterinarian know all there is to know about animal nutrition, think again. John Rowe shares his experience and wisdom in pet care. Highlighting in particular the foul food by-products that many pet-food manufacturers sell as "healthy balanced diets". Good marketing and packaging may have made you overlook some common sense facts. A must read if you have lost a pet of "natural" causes and can't understand why.

I have been suffering from Fibromyalgia for over 15 years. Once I went on the ER4YT diet, my over-all health improved vastly... except I still suffered occasionally from Fibromyalgia. I bought this book, followed the diet & went on the 12 week arthritis protocol that he recommended. Not only did the pain subside during the 12 weeks, but also for the past year it has been much more manageable. The most difficult thing was finding the supplements in the dosages that Dr. D'Adamo recommended. Through the help of the internet I found all of them - most of them from Vitacost.com. It still amazes me that after a year of going on this protocol I am still doing so well. I am an O non-secretor.

I have read all the "diet" books, from South Beach, Dr. Phil, Jorge Cruse, Atkins, The Raw Food Diet, etc. This book is by far the best of the best! Dr. Taub's book directs the reader in a whole different direction than any of the others. He talks about the mind set and how we allow the commercialization of food to rule and direct us in how we should eat. He gives plausible explanations for changing our eating habits and he does it with fun. He makes you want to make healthy changes. He covers issues that other authors do not. He tells the reader that you don't have to "diet", you don't have to count calories and you don't have to become an exercise guru. After reading his book, I know that this will be a lifetime change for me. I want to experience the joy of eating "living" food as he describes it and I don't ever want to taint my body again with the foods that he says are "dead" and do not give us any nutrition. I want to have a long, healthy life! I am 62 years of age and he made me realize that I am not too old to get started on this healthy way of life!
I am really excited about this book and I thank Dr. Taub for dispelling the ideas that others have set down about "diets", losing weight and eating healthy.

This is the best comprehensive book I've read on becoming healthy (and I've researched 'becoming healthy' extensively). It's written for the average person who wants to avoid prevalent diseases of the US (overweight, cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis...). It's easy to understand what you need to do and the effects are long-term. Best of all it doesn't take a denial approach to eating.

The reading goes quickly even though repetitive sometimes. The information is up to date and is what your doctor should be telling you!

Note: This book isn't as much for people who want to be 100% healthy, as it targets a broud range of people. If your goal is to be 100% healthy, I'd recommend looking for literature on raw or living foods, juicing, and colon care.
