Wonderful for families affected by cancerReview Date: 2008-01-02
A book a child can understandReview Date: 2007-09-03
From the Publisher:Review Date: 2001-01-23
They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.
Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.
Best picture book about parental cancerReview Date: 2001-11-15
This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.
This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

Works, within reason.Review Date: 2000-07-20
Since the complete thing takes 15 minutes, doesn't require a warm-up or a cool-down, isn't likely to make you sweat, or even require work-out clothes, it's a good way to get some activity into your life. It's easy to do when injured, and probably even a good idea when sick in many cases, unlike most workouts. You can even do it in the car.
Are there problems with it? Well, yes, you might find it very unpleasant to actually =do=. Intense breathing is not for everyone. (Some people compare it to yoga, but it's not at all meditative.) You're also not going to get the kind of muscles you'll get from the Body-for-LIFE program (for example) or the sort of weight-loss you might get from the Atkins diet.
But ultimately, I'm glad to have this program in my exercise arsenal. It can give you an energy boost when you're stuck in traffic, give you a way to keep your aerobic level up after a long period of not exercising, and is definitely a worthwhile effort.
Breathe deeply and burn away your fatReview Date: 2008-01-12
Breathe in deeply and quickly from your diaphragm, inhale three last times, then exhale fast with three final puffs. Repeat four more times. That is the basic exercise. Do it in a total of five different postures and you are done for the day: 15 minutes. Ms Johnson gives many additional postures and stretches, so you will not be bored. At first my wife got dizzy trying this fast, constricted breathing and I myself had a nose bleed.
But it doesn't take long, and you soon have a simple routine that you can vary by sitting, standing or lying down. And for the rest of the day, when you think about your breathing during a boring staff meeting or Red Hats Ladies meeting, just do a slow, steady version of the above (without the final puffs or sucks) and expand your lung capacity beyond the pitiful 20% that most of us upper chest breathers have come to think of as normal.
And when you are routinely breathing at an enhanced 60% or 80% lung capacity, what are some good by-products?
First, you will be better at any sport that responds to deep breathing, e.g. treadmilling or even marathoning.
Second, you will add an extra dimension to your yoga, tai chi or other exercises.
And, thirdly, with the Hindus and Buddhists you can study whole sciences of breathing and meditation.
Fourthly, like her predecessor Pam Grout (JUMPSTART YOUR METABOLISM), Jill R. Johnson also claims that deep breathing on a regular basis will make you lose weight.
Why would that work? Because, both women argue, oxygen burns (oxygenates) fat stored in our bodies. The more oxygen we breathe in, therefore, the more and faster we remove fat from our cells. And exhaling sucks fats and other wastes out of our body. Johnson cites many satisfied customers: deep breathing -- fast or slow -- causes weight loss.
What's more: deep, systematic, diaphragmatic breathing costs nothing. Save the cost of running shoes, gym dues and heavy exercise equipment.

Adaptable exercise for the differently abled.Review Date: 2003-05-21
However, after my friends introduced me to Oxycise, I laid the tapes aside, preferring more rigorous activities such as Boxercise, swimming, and la danse Orientale. Last month, I was waylaid by an inner ear infection that significantly limited my activity. With my physician's permission--which one should have before adding any new exercise--I began Oxycise and was able to retain much of my muscle tone and general fitness through my illness. I plan to keep Oxycise as part of my overall fitness activities.
So glad I purchased it!Review Date: 2000-03-14

How to get the results you want!Review Date: 2003-07-09
I found this book so fascinating that I couldn't put it down. So I finished it on the day that I received it. It makes so much sence of why it is that we put on weight. It helps you to analyze what has triggered the weight gain that you have. And gives examples of how we can overcome the triggers.
This book has been a real eye opener for me. It made me look at myself differently and how I can improve on myself.
There is alot of self analyzing that you have to do but it gives you the tools that you need to do it with.
I would heartily recommend this book for someone that wants to do serious weight loss for life.

Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth.Review Date: 2002-11-10
By far the best book on this subjectReview Date: 2002-10-08
Great book!Review Date: 2005-12-13
Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.
To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.
Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

Recognizing Celiac DiseaseReview Date: 2007-04-04
Helpful information for CeliacsReview Date: 2007-12-11
THIS IS NOT AN EXCERSIZE IN SELF-DIAGNOSIS, as suggested by another reader. Gluten is a perfectly valid and healthy product for people who do not suffer from an intolerance or Celiac disease, so for God's sake, let your Doctor diagnose you (but give him this book as a gift!!). Wheat, rye and barley have made up the diet of many a successful civilization, so no self-diagnosis with this book, ok? Gluten is not evil, just bad for those of us who tend to make antibodies to it. ;)
Physicians and laymen will find this helpfulReview Date: 2007-07-13

More Than A Dieter's Cheating GuideReview Date: 2007-11-15
Easy to follow, practical and safe
Based on correct principles
Results in lost pounds in the near and long term
Compassionate and understanding of human nature
Some facts of life are not pleasant, such as the fact that a gram of fat contains more calories than a gram of protein or carbohydrate. Yet within such constraints Dr. Widroe offers the reader a way to manage her/his eating habits without sacrificing one's favorite foods and without the tedium of counting calories or taking on boring tasks. Further, the book is downright interesting with realistic accounts along the way that help solidify your understanding of his points.

Diet Cheaters Go to the Head of the ClassReview Date: 2007-04-13
"The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide: Eat and Watch Pounds Melt Away," by Harvey J. Widroe, M.D., with Ron Kenner, makes the case that people are only human and easily given to temptation. Widroe's innovative approach, with a focus on the mindset of the dieter, allows the dieter to cheat-- but cheat smartly.
This is not a crash program that excludes any one food group. Widroe allows you to have your cake and eat it, too; in lesser portions of course. But his strategy is anything but simplistic. It involves such things as shrewd restaurant ordering, and planning rewards in advance. In one chapter, How to eat Effectively, the reader is given space to write in his or her current cheating list and then devise a new, improved cheating list. There is fun to be had in candid confession. Perhaps most unique to this work are the human vignettes, where we get into the lives of husbands, wives and friends, as they confront the diet challenge and learn how to reap the benefits of smart cheating.
This is a diet book for the thinking person who doesn't want to obsess over calories, nor suffer the sin of giving in to temptation. In appealing to our ability to conquer weight loss through the use of our own psychological tools, Widroe has turned an old axiom on its head: Cheaters can prosper--but only by being honest with themselves.

ExcellentReview Date: 2007-10-04
This Watchman Nee book focuses in considerable detail on "The Song of Songs" (that is the Hebrew title, though this Old Testament book has gone by other names, including "The Song of Solomon" and "Canticles"). Though originally viewed by some early Church authorities as controversial (probably because of its supposed prurience), "The Song of Songs" was ultimately accepted and approved as "cannonical" and has subsequently proven to have been a favorite of various Christian "mystics" over the centuries.
However, beyond perhaps being told somewhere along the line in passing that it is an allegory about Christ (as the Bridegroom) and His love for the Church, it has unfortunately remained a largely obscure and little studied book for many modern day Christians. That no longer need be the case! Nee's writings, which are quite accessible and easy to read, can really open up this portion of the Scriptures to a much fuller understanding. And, after one carefully studies "The Song of Songs" with the help of Nee's little book, they will clearly see why so many "mystics" have been drawn to it.
Now, over the years, some very sincere and respected believer-scholars have regarded the "Song of Songs" as mainly an allegory. Others, however, just as genuine and well-meaning, have instead claimed that the book is primarily a straightforward historical account of a special romance which occurred between King Solomon and a Shulammite woman which is intended to serve as a model of joyous and honorable marriage. Well, I say, why can't it be both!?
In his little commentary, Nee takes the allegorical view. In it, he proceeds line by line in the poetry that comprises the "The Song of Songs" and explains how the account marvelously and beautifully chronicles and unfolds the stages of a believers relationship with God through Christ, progressing from the initial calling and pursuit, to the believer's increasing desire for deliverance from the self and the "world", to full spiritual development and union.
One suggestion: I think that Nee's book on "The Song of Songs" is targeted to a more spiritually mature and experienced Christian and might not be entirely suitable for those who may yet be "new in the Lord".
A must for anyone seriously in love with Jesus.Review Date: 1999-06-07
"Song of Songs" brings reader closer to ChristReview Date: 2002-02-09
Nee reveals a God-centered purpose to this often misunderstood treasure of Holy Scripture. For those who regularly underline key passages and thoughts, there are two options. Put away your markers or be prepared to highlight the entire text. I found it difficult to read large portions at one sitting due to the depth of discovery revealed by this wonderful saint's insights.
It's an exellent challenge for those who want to draw ever nearer to the Lord.
Uses Scripture to Interpret ScriptureReview Date: 2005-05-07
Another example of this can be found in the phrase about "the lily of the valley," which most people use to refer to the Lord Jesus. Nee interprets that as the Shulamite, i.e., that she is just a common lily among many others.
Having said all that, Nee's study is still benefical. You can tell he is thoroughly Bible literate as he constantly uses the Bible to interpret the Song. He traces various symbols back to other passages. The insights he brings in this study remain valid because the general theme is built on orthodoxy. He isn't advancing any "new gospel" but deepening an understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
