Ms. Coss has also written a book called HOW TO MANAGE YOUR CHILD'S LIFE-THREATENING FOOD ALLERGIES. This, too, is a wonderful book for any parent who has a child with food allergies. Basically, this book includes the following:
1) The Food Allergy "Instruction Manual" - get step-by-step information to make your child's life safe
2) Practical, Sensible Advice - learn details on how to handle common and dangerous situations
3) An "Encyclopedia" in 200 Pages - covers topics including how to treat allergic reactions, how to buy and cook foods, how to make your house safe, and how to teach other's about your child's allergies.

I can't stress enough how wonderful Ms. Coss' books are for parents of children with food allergies. I think they are must-haves for parents like me who are constantly dealing with this very scary situation. Ms. Coss has lots of experience with food allergies. She has led a support group for parents of children with food allergies for over 10 years; and she is the mother of a teenage with multiple potentially fatal food allergies.

The information is so valuable, and it comes from a mom who has traveled the road, and faught the fights, and is a true advocate for children with food allergies. When my DS first developed food allergies, this was the book that was recommended to me. This book was a god-send to me when I was overwhelmed with what was going on. Almost three years later, I am still using this book. It is an allergy bible. Included in the book are sample restaurant cards, sample letters to write to your child's school, letters for medical personnel when you travel, tips on how to start a support group, how to read a label to recognize your specific allergen and much more! I have given this book to my DS's teachers and nurses, family members and friends. This is an absolute must have!

I ordered this book when my son was first diagnosed with his peanut allergy. This is a great book with really practicle day to day information on how to deal with real life events. She lays out different scenarios such as playdates, and birthday parties, and gives different suggestions on how to deal with them depending on your situation. Also being the mother of a food allergic child, this book really spoke to me on a more personal level, such as, "you are not crazy", "you can learn to live with this, and it will be ok", and "take some deep breaths.." She also has a great appendix in the back with all sorts of information, such as a script to use and leave at your house in case you need to call 911, and information on how to start a support group.

My child has severe dairy allergies and this book helped me with so much. I now carry his medicine/epi pen in a special bag with all the vital information. Also, this book helped me to know that we are not alone and it gave me so much great information when going places with my child, even to friends/family. I recommend this book to anyone who has just discovered their child has allergies. A must have!!!

This is the book for anyone who has a blood sugar problem. This blood sugar malfunction may manifest itself in weight gain, alcohol abuse, overuse of sugar, or simply in sinking energy levels. The author of this book gives her own personal story, and she gives some amazing, yet easily understandable details on how our bodies handle sugar and what our bodies need to function well. A practical plan is laid out that helps each person learn about his or her individual body reactions to the food we eat. Of all the diet or health books that I have read, this one has helped me the most. (It is not a diet book, it is a plan to maximize your body's ability to function in good health.)

Reading this book, my wife has realized that she and our daughter have sugar sensitivity. Though the recommendations in this book are not necessarily easy to implement, they're much better than many other approaches we've tried in the health and diet genre. Going through the steps, after some withdrawal symptoms similar to caffeine withdrawal (headache but not as severe) getting her body cleansed, my wife is reporting much higher energy levels.

The potatoes thing seems to work. Pleasant dreams!

Life Changing Book

This book is changing my life. To overcome twenty years of craving chocolate and bingeing on sweets--twenty years of wondering what was wrong with my willpower--by simply following the seven steps outlined in this book: well, it's nothing short of a miracle. Here I am, someone who could never imagine life without chocolate, actually embracing cutting sugar out of my life. My daylong grazing has been replaced by planned snacks, I'm less cranky, I rarely battle mild depression anymore, and I can now stay up till 9:30 or 10 PM without petering out (a biggie for me). And it all began with getting enough protein for breakfast.

One of the best things is that you don't have to believe this eating program will work. If you just do the food, the changes will happen by themselves. It's straightforward (no complicated calculations), simple (though not always easy), and cheap (once you buy the book, there's no big outlay of money). Plus, there's a wonderful and caring online community to support people each step of the way.

I also highly recommend Kathleen DesMaison's eating program for children, outlined in LITTLE SUGAR ADDICTS. Through this book, my four daughters' lives are changing in wonderful ways as well.

The original version of this book gave me my life back. Depression gone, cravings gone, crazy thoughts gone, self-loathing gone, PMS gone. All through the simplicity of eating the right foods for my body. I gave up sugar without shedding a tear, something I thought I would never be able to do, and I don't miss it at all. This edition has all the newest, updated info that Kathleen and the Radiant Recovery community have discovered since the first edition came out. This book will change your life, will give you a life you might only have dreamed of otherwise. Thank you, Kathleen.

I suspected that I had a problem with sugar when I tried to get rid of it and couldn't. I also noticed that I tended to increase my sugar intake every day for several days and then go off of it for a while and then start again. I used it like a drug.

The first edition of PNP changed my life. All of DesMaisons' books are great, but PNP is the best. It explains the science behind the theory in greater depth than the other books, which gives the theory more power in my opinion. The second edition is sort of a different book. It has a lot of updated information based on what DesMaisons' has learned by working with the online community. It's worth reading both, but if you only buy one, get the second one.

Visit her website if you want to know more about the theory before you buy. There is life after sugar addiction and it is a great life!

WHY THE WEIGHT? DARE TO BE GREAT! is like reading a Bible for those who want to lose weight. It is so inspirational that it should be kept out on a table to read and reread when one needs to be reminded of the multitude of ideas offered the readers. For those of us who have weight problems, it should be in a obvious place to use as a way of life.
Its contents are more than any reader could ever expect, without a page of disappointment.

Why the Weight? Dare to be Great!

In this book, Jean Krueger talks about eating in response to "loss". She has had some profound losses in her life including the deaths of both parents and 3 brothers......but she expands the concept of "loss" to other areas as well.

A second point is Krueger's philosophy that weight loss is not only about the pounds. It is about adding things into your life. When you are overweight, you have no energy. No zest. No joy of living. She urges you to examine your life. Take on new challenges and make a list of things you want to do and start doing them step by step.

In my own life, I suffered "loss" of self esteem when I was unable to balance the stress of being a perfectionist at work and trying to be a wife and mother at home. I ended up taking a transfer in order to survive and felt embarrassed and ashamed because I hadn't been able to handle it all. My self esteem fell to an all time low. Eventually I retired and again felt the "loss" of an exhausting but exciting career.

Later, I fell from a ladder and suffered a debilitating injury which put me on medication and laid me up for more than a year. Food was an easy solution to both losses. Besides, I deserved it and it made me feel better..... temporarily.

I reached a point when I felt my life was over. I became depressed and discouraged and withdrew from friends and activities.

Weight has been a problem all my life. I have tried many weight loss programs and the scale has yoyo'd up and down. But when I found this book and started reading it, I wrote in my journal, "could this really be the time?" In other words, could I not only take off the weight but resume a meaningful life?

My mantra has become, "I am determined to take back my life." I have lost 10% of my body weight, am about half way to my goal and am doing more things and enjoying them more than I have for years. I am again in touch with old friends and am helping to plan a reunion of current and retired employees. I eat out all the time...and make good choices much of the time. I walk alot and go to the gym several times a week and my husband and I have completed several 5K fund raisers. I have joined a quilting guild and taken an adult education sewing class. I am in training as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

I have been fairly diligent...but not perfect. For me, I no longer look for the "quick fix" to lose weight. Weight control is now more a change of mind set and life style and I owe my motivation to Jean Krueger and her insightful book.

Jean is an amazing woman and an inspiration to all. She is someone who has walked the walk. Her advice is on target. She is compassionate but shoots straight. Follow her plan and your life will change, along with your weight. I should know. I have been following her plan for a year now. I have lost 50 pounds, in spite of losing two important people. I dealt with the grief the right way -not eating my way through it. Thank you for everything, Jean.

If you follow a low-carb lifestyle and ever entertain or celebrate holidays then this book is a must-have.

I have several low-carb cookbooks but this one is different. Whatever other low-carb cookbooks you have, you need this one too. So many of us end up putting our diets on hold during the holidays or family get-togethers. Enter: The South Beach Diet Parties and Holidays Cookbook to the rescue.

This book gives recipes that are suited and delicious enough to become part of your holiday celebrations. The recipes cover events such as a Super Bowl Bash and Baby Showers to holidays from New Years to Christmas.

The opening page for each party or holiday gives you a menu list and also a party game plan that helps you organize and plan ahead. Nutrition at a glance facts and make ahead instructions are given at the end of each recipe.

The book's pages are high quality pages with color photographs. I always appreciate color photos of food when they are included in a cookbook. The book has 21 menus with 150 recipes that will have you saying "It's time to celebrate with some good food". Best of all, it's food that's good for you too.

I am very happy with this book. This book is very complete and really well organized. It was recommended to me by both my personal trainer and my Cycle class instructor (also a personal trainer). I am not an athlete but I do an hour or two of fitness work nearly every day at the gym. I was glad to see lots of information for my level of fitness and as well as my fitness program. Book discusses not just what to eat but how much, and ratios, and the whys of each. I think this book is useful and helpful no matter how little or how great your level of sports and fitness activity.

I recommend this book to everyone. Although Nancy Clark calls it a Sport's Nutrition Guidebook, this is really a guide on the way everybody should eat in order to be healthy. She begins by giving general guidelines on what eating every day should be like. She explains why everything is important: carbs, protein, fat, sugar, dairy. Then she goes on to explain what it is each of these types of food does in the body and how and why we should eat them. She also explains how to eat and when to eat. It is an extremely detailed book where you get a whole new outlook on food. There's also some great chapters with recipes.

The Sports Nutrition Guidebook is a useful resource for the average, healthy individual to have at hand as a nutritional resource. This book is more of a healthy living guide, than a sport specific guide, Individuals who are engaging in sports that require a lot of anaerobic activity, like football or baseball will not find this book as useful, but they will still find some great instruction. For endurance sports such as running or cycling, or for the general weekend warrior looking to have nutrition be a part of a healthy lifestyle, that is not concerned with larger than normal weight loss, this book is a good esource.

While basic advice is well-written here, that shouldn't be really new to anyone who is familiar with good nutrition: a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and dairy; and the importance of regular meals, some care is taken to readjust thinking about fad diets and dietary myths, especially in preparation for physical activity. Unbalanced approaches to carbohydrates, fluid, protein, etc. and their dangers are detailed in an easy to understand format. The chapter on misusing a healthy lifestyle for rapid weight loss or other eating disorders is tactfully written.

The last third of the book is a useful recipe guide that applies principles taught in the book into practical meal planning steps that are neither arduous nor difficult for active individuals to adapt to. Creating a healthy approach to the body, especially in view of a fat obssessed society calls for balance and patience. There is nothing sudden or radical about the advice in this book, as it is above all, caling for a lifestyle that is healthy and active and is designed to provide nutrional advice for helping individuals achieve those goals. This book is a great resource for active people, who want sound, scientific advice that meets the needs of individuals in today's fast paced society.

This is NOT just for moms who plan to breastfeed two, but ALSO for breastfeeding moms who might get pregnant while breastfeeding. I could have used it earlier in my 2nd pregnancy, but I waited until I couldn't wean my first. Great information on how it affects contractions and it helps to affirm that breastfeeding while you're pregnant is just fine. A few tips for positioning and lots of stories so you know you are not alone. I'm still tandem nursing after 14 months at it! Plus nine if you count in-utero time. Might sound strange to some, but you find yourself doing things different than you might think once you're the mom.

This book really helped me sort out what was best for our family when I was pregnant while nursing a 2-year-old. What I liked about the book is that it is, as much as possible, based on research rather than opinion. So many health care professionals advise their pregnant patients to wean their nurslings, regardless of age, when this advice is completely unsupported by evidence. I also was very grateful for the non-judgmental tone of this book. She acknowledges that there is no one approach for every family, but without downplaying the vital importance of breastfeeding for as long as mother and baby wish to. I'd recommend this book for any mother who is pregnant or has a baby while nursing an older child.

I bought this when I got pregnant and was still nursing my almost-two-year-old. It's nicely written with entertaining illustrations and lovely pictures of many tandem nursers. It made me feel like whatever I decided was okay, and whether I end up weaning before the birth, nursing two on demand, nursing one on demand and one to schedule, or even if he starts up again after weaning once the baby comes, it's all been done before and it's all doable.

Perfect for any breastfeeding mom or suporter of breastfeeding

I wasn't overly impressed by any of the ones I saw, so I dug this out instead, figuring I could at least get a little heads up on what to expect in terms of nursing (like everyone else posting reviews, I've got a nursing toddler and am pregnant; having gotten thru the worst of the soreness, I don't expect weaning soon). In the event, this book offers a nice overview of other impacts on the family of adding a new baby to the mix: sleep issues, routines, keeping the toddler happy while the newborn has you fully occupied, etc. And unlike some of the other second-child books, this one is firmly focused on attachment parenting/co-sleeping/extended nursing/etc.

Flowers' narrative voice is pleasant without wasting your time. As with all too many books about breastfeeding, the format is a little large for holding comfortably while nursing. The voices of many, many mothers who have Already Been There are included within a structure that lets you look up an answer to a question you have quickly.

First thing I do whenever my health isn't what I want it to be is look up what vitamins Dr. Atkins recommends and it what dosages.

It's never failed me. May not work as quickly as prescribed medication, but in the end has the same effect and a lot healthier.

Cannot recommend this book more strongly.

This book covers uses for various supplements that are not always covered by other vitamin books.
The information is very helpful, but a few things are a little out of date, mostly because of what was or wasn't available when the book was written.
Overall, a good addition to your nutrition library if you're interested in using supplements or knowing more about what certain nutrients do.

Because of my allergies and asthma, I was on Zyrtec, Advair, and had to carry an albuterol inhaler everywhere I went. I did the diet some years ago and it worked well. After seeing this book somewhere I decided to give it a try.

After reading this book I thought he Dr. Atikin's lost it this time. There are a lot of vitamins he wants you to take. Plus he started selling his own line of vitamins so I thought "ahhh, that's why." I talked to my doctor about it and he said it wouldn't work, you would just be wasting money because your body will piss it all away (literally). I was spending $150 on medications, the vitamins were about $20, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Well, I tried it, and it worked. I felt a lot better, and I didn't need to take the medications anymore.

This book is still the best one out there....

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

I bought this book to help reduce my recently diagnosed high cholesterol problem. I'm an RN and found this book very inspiring and informative. I highly recommend it and am using most of his suggestions. The best book I have found on the subject & I have lowered my LDL and raised my HDL. Now I am trying his weight loss ideas that cover one chapter and suggest restricting carbs. I started that today. This book is worth the money and the author also writes a newsletter that you can subscribe to.

It really, really works!

Amazing results and pretty easy! Believe me, you can lower that colesterol and still eat well! Following a few suggestions in this book--I wasn't even that strict---oat bran, niacin, more vegatables, avoiding transfats ect, my total colesterol dropped 116 points in SIX WEEKS! My "bad" colesterol went from 177 to 80. The book is easy to read and you will learn tons about how your body works.

I got my total cholesterol down from 275 to 191, Triglycerides down from 221 to 96. LDL down from, 182 to 118 and HDL up from 49 to 54.
This was accomplished in 10 weeks by rigidly sticking to the zero saturated fat recommendation and half heartedly trying the Niacin regimen.
I cut out cheese, milk, whole eggs, etc. and substituted with olive and canola oils.
I have since ramped up the niacin regimen to the complete doses recommended by the book and will see if I can improve on these already impressive numbers.
Try it, it works.
UPDATE - 10 weeks after the review above I had my lipids checked again and my total cholesterol is now 133; that's pretty amazing considering my
total was 275 just five months ago and I have not taken any prescription medications. My LDL is now 75 (down from 182) and my triglyserides are now 71 (down from 221). I am actually concerned my cholesterol may now be too low. Great advice!

This book is an excellent read with practical, easy to follow diet changes. My cholesterol went from 257 to 187 in 3 months time. In addition to reading this book, I used recipes from the American Heart Assoc. cookbook, excersized almost every day, and read the "Cholesterol Down" book. This book has helped me understand how to change my life for the better, giving me the information to understand why I needed various diet adjustments.
In particular, I really enjoy the muffin recipes in the back of the book. And typically eat 2-3/day! Benecol also now makes a chewy caramel that I used to help get my intake of plant stanols/sterols as per the recommendations.

This book has so much information about converting to a plant based diet. It had all the info about the nutrition of vegetarians including what vegetarian diets tend to lack. It dispels all the nutritional rumors and has a handy guide on how to switch and how to deal with those who may chastize you. It even has recepies and cooking tips for the new vegetarian chef.

Whether you do it for your health, for your love of animals, or because you want something new, Becoming Vegetarian is definitly what I would recommend for those new to the switch.

This book is extremely comprehensive. It is the first book about becoming vegetarian that I have read but I am completely satisfied that it covers all the requirements of a vegetarian diet. I would also recommend this book to non-vegetarians, particularly those seeking to reduce meat intake and increase nutrition from plant foods.

This is a good book with a lot of good information. The problem with the book is that it has an agenda. If I didn't know any better I would have to think that the author was a member of PETA. Keep the politics out of the book!

Lost 23 pounds

I started this diet after hearing Dr. Gundry speak in a radio interview. I had just taken a cholesterol test at that time, so I was compelled to go on the diet and see if I could lower my cholesterol without the use of drugs... which I was on. I was very strict... no cheating... and lost 23 pounds in 90 days, and lowered my body fat percentage to 12.5%. I never felt that I was fat, but my main concern was my cholesterol, mainly because every man in my family has died of heart disease in there 50's. Well unfortunately, it went right back up to over 300. However I felt like a completely new person and I am very happy with the results. I wish Dr. Gundry was more available via email, I want to talk to him about my blood test, but I could not find any email on him at all.

While I think his book is fascinating, I was very disappointed to find that the website he keeps referring readers to has nothing on it.

I bought this book after hearing Dr. Gundry being interviewed on KFI radio in Los Angeles. I let it sit for awhile, then my wife picked it up, read it, and got me interested. With her help I implemented the diet and I've lost ~30 lbs (271 -> 242) in 12 weeks so far. My goal is to reach 220 by November (I'm 6'3") and it looks like I'll easily exceed that by the time November roles around. My blood pressure has gone from ~122/83 to ~109/67. I've also noticed that a lot of little daily pains I had been dealing with have gone away and I can now keep up with my 2 year old son.

I will add that after losing the first 10 lbs or so I was encouraged by the results to do moderate exercise in the form of walking on the treadmill about 3 times/week. Dr. Gundry does recommend moderate cardio in the form of walking and strength training. I've only been able to do the walking because the hotel I've been staying at for the past 6 months only has treadmills, although I've also done occasional push-ups.

My fear before starting was that I'd be constantly hungry on any diet, but while following this I'm never hungry. Dr. Gundry's plan is not completely unique as there are a lot of similar diets espoused by other doctors; some all meat; others all vegan. However, I feel that his strikes a good balance between eating meat and veggies.

The idea behind the diet is to evolve your diet back to how our ancestors ate before processed foods. This is accomplished in 3 phases. There's a heavy emphasis on eating lots of green nutrient rich veggies. You also eat protein in the form of steaks, fish and chicken and he recommends supplements such as a good multi-vitamin. As you progress through the phases, you lessen the amount of meat and increase the veggies. I'm still in phase 1 where you lose weight until you reach your target.

I highly recommend this book and diet, especially for guys because you don't get hungry and it's very simple to follow. No counting points or writing things down like in Weight Watchers (which my wife does and has had great success with). No counting calories.

This is a fantastic book! I have purchased 5 so far and given them to people who see such a difference in me! I am down 29 pounds in about 3 months. I lost a pound a day on phase 1. After that first 2 weeks I am loosing about 2-3 pounds per week.I have lost 3 sizes. My blood pressure has dropped and my energy level is great. I am never hungry. I do follow the diet exactly and have not added any grain and very limited fruit. It just makes sense to eat what makes you feel better. This is a new way of life for me. Thank you Dr. Gundry!

Its working!

I have been on this diet for about a month. I have lost 12 pounds. I am not starving like I used to be when I was eating what I wanted. I have not had blood sugar swings. I did have a head ache for about the first week, but I feel better now than ever. My joints do not hurt as much. I have no gastrointestinal distress, and my thin hair is getting thicker. I can see the new hairs growing. It is easy to follow, nothing to count. Try it!
