More than a Diet - A Lifelong Self Improvement Tool

So far, I recommend it highly. It's working for me, I feel awesome and I've only been using this for two weeks. Very meaty info, yet easy to read and understand. the most interesting health book I've ever read. Personally, I am less concerned about weight loss than overall health, but this book appealed to me because of the integration of Chinese Medicine and Western Science, and the Meta-type concept convinced me I could live a healthier lifestyle, specifically tailored to my body and personality, even if I don't need to lose weight. "Complementary" medicine is growing in popularity but no one else has ever clearly explained concepts like Yin and Yang, for example, in ways we can understand through science. Dr. Elizabeth Dane very clearly and in a friendly way, explains how Yin and Yang (Chinese) are aligned with our nervous system and body energies (Western science). I started slow with the book, on the healthy eating and exercises, and then I add more ideas from the book in phases. I go back to it daily, understanding my Meta-type specifics, picking up new ways of relaxing and managing stress, modifying recipes from magazines like Cooking Light with my Meta-type foods. What I don't need is another book filled of charts of calories/fiber/fat that some lab puts out for every single body as "ideal" that's impossible that I have to memorize. Yuck. I've seen all different body typing studies, but none that is as comprehensive as this. This one includes mental, spiritual and all other experiences of health besides eating less to lose weight. I recommend it highly.

A diet book that makes sense (and I've tried them all!)

I was amazed at how wonderfully the author was able to integrate eastern and western medicine in this unusual diet book. Why is it a great diet book? Because it doesn't tell you just how to lose weight -- it gives you a weight management plan for life that flows directly from its healthy lifestyle recommendations.

As someone who put on and lost close to 1,000 lbs over a 30-year period, using a variety of temporarily successful fad diets, and then overate again, I'm in a position to say how this one differs from other diet books.

This book enabled me to pin down my own metabolic type. The author calls it "Meta-type," and by that term she means not just how quickly your body breaks down food, but the entire way your body, emotions, and personaility work. This makes sense because eastern medicine -- unlike western -- doesn't try to separate the body from the mind (and emotions).

While this is not a simple fix (I've sure had enough of those!), I found myself learning a great deal about how my body, my emotions, and my stress level have kept me from maintaining a stable weight. What I most liked about the book is that it explains -- using solid science from endocrinology -- why the diet that works for my friend fails to work for me. The book helped me recognize how often my worst periods of weight gain correlated with periods of stress, and it provided me with many tools to keep on a healthy diet plan even when I'm under stress.

I strongly recommend buying this book to anyone who's tried Adkins, the Zone, and other "one size fits all" diet books -- and still cannot maintain their desired weight level.

Transformative Book!

Wow! What a book! This book is an astonishing work. Not only does the author cover all that is necessary, she actually taught me to create an eating plan that works right for me - for my body, for who I am. Talk about customized! I felt like I'd spent hours getting a personal consultation from her by the time I'd read the book. The information is worth the effort. Her website supplemented what I learned in the text and I find myself feeling better all the time! (And looking healthier, too!)

A Perfect Blend of Chinese Medicine and Western Science

People who cannot see past the broad, quick-fix diets of our generation may react skeptically, even harshly to the methods outlined in Dr. Elizabeth Dane's book, "Your Body, Your Diet." Even more naïve are those who still want to believe that we are not affected by what we put in our bodies. Nothing could be further from the truth. What is also true, and is most often overlooked, is that who we ARE often defines what we WANT to put in our bodies. Our Meta-type determines our needs and our cravings, good and bad. This ideology is the very fiber of Dr. Dane's methods. By understanding our unique self, we take the greatest leap toward health and happiness.

There's a reason why diet "gurus" can pop out a new book every six months and have it sell-chances are their last book didn't work for you and you're left still searching for a solution. There's also a reason Dr. Elizabeth Dane has put out only ONE book in over 25 years of practice as a clinical nutritionist and O.M.D. (Oriental Medical Doctor)-because this book is the only one you will need. It's a perfect blend of Chinese Medicine and Western Science, based on Dr. Dane's original, frontline research-real work she's done with real people for over two decades.

The problem with most "quick fix" diets it that they don't require any real change in lifestyle. They offer just a few new recipes and cutting out some snacks, and more exercise, of course-just re-hashing the obvious things we've been told for years. But because diets such as these don't require much change, they don't affect much real change either.

Dr. Dane's book succeeds because of an approach that's targeted to the individual-it's not a "one-size-fits-all" or "diet-of-the-month." Her plan may be harder to adjust to at first, and can initially appear very time consuming. But then, millions of Americans have wasted lots of time reading through new diet book after new diet book over the years. And as with anything, once a routine is developed, these changes become a part of daily life-and, best of all, Dr. Dane's results are permanent.

Elizabeth Dane is a genius! I can't believe how much her book and philosophy has helped me. I have dropped over 20 pounds since I got her book and my energy level has increased more than I ever dreamed it could. I've tried so many ways to lose weight and increase my energy and what Elizabeth has written is magic. Dr. Dane's knowledge of what works is simply amazing! You'll agree.

This plus "God's Way to Ultimate Health",Lyman's "Mad Cowboy" started it all for me around January. A good friend recommended to read Malkmus after she beat breast cancer by changing her diet! I knew then I had to understand the link between diet and health. I wasn't satisfied to read just this book but many of the others listed in the bibliography and others on biological medicine and others relating to the acid/alkaline balance within our bodies. Morter's "Your Health, Your Choice" helps us to describe what's happening and clearly spells out what implications diet has on our lives. Armed with this info I've been able to help my mother gain control of her arthritis and hopefully get her off methotrexate for good. I've been able to help my mother in law lower her cholesterol since prior strokes have made this an issue. And my wife and I have lost the weight we couldn't seem to shake and have been able to improve all aspects of our health and physical well being. If you have any loved ones who's quality of life you want help improve this book is a great start.

Ahead Of Its Time

Review Date: 2001-06-13
I read this book in the early 90's. Ted Morter, D.C. was way ahead of his time when he released this book to the public. Unfortunately, good health is a person's choice and most people will take very little time to make inquiry into the matter. Also, although this book is reasonable and substantiated from a physiological standpoint, one has to break through the idolatry that exists where medical cures are concerned (i.e. antacids as a cure for stomach ills, argggh!).

I loved Dr. Morters explanation of the digestive process and the pH of each phase from salivation to stomach to duodenum. It is necessary to understand all this to understand what lengths our bodies will go to in order to "save the whole man". The body operates in its wisdom under dire circumstances, but we have a choice and an opportunity to get out of survival mode into health. And the answer is so simple and the logic impeccable.

Cancer and other disease thrive in an acidic environment within the body. Each food we eat leaves a residue of acid or alkalai in our system. Our body will do crazy things to counteract the acid-ash residue left from the SAD diet we are used to (Std. American Diet). Our body will pull calcium from the bones even to neutralize the acid in the system. Drinking more homogenized milk only aggravates the acidity.

Dr. Morter runs under the legs of the medical researchers and unlocks the mysteries...a simple answer to a plaguing problem. Now, ten years after I read the book, researchers are catching up to this book.

It's your health and your choice. If you won't invest the effort to read a little book and see if it compels you to make some basic adjustments, then you deserve the inevitable: poor health and misery---perhaps early exit. This book is great and it changed my life. Too bad it's out of print. It's a CLASSIC! I think that you could find it as a used book even. I still have my copy and don't lend it to anyone. Get it at the library if you must. Sincerely, "paris_match@hotmail.com"

A way out for common health problems

The book gives me a new perspective towards "health" from the traditional "nutrition" way. This pH perspective takes a "total approach" towards health. You will know the real causes of some common illness like asthma, heart diseases, gall stones, mental illness, blood problems......which are actually caused by bad eating habits/choices. Then you will know how to find a way out from those diseases. The book is written in very simple language, an average people can understand it very easily. Having understood the reasons why we choose out food in a 8:2 ratio (8=vege, 2=protein/carbohydrate), it is so easy to apply the priciple in my daily life to stay healthy. It is recommended to read the other books from the author - Dynamic Health, An apple a day and Exercise or Diet.

Read this book! Your life may be in danger.

If you have any type of health problem, please read this book. You may not know it, but your food may be killing you. Your body can heal, but it may be in survival mode and it just doesnt have the chance. This book is very understandable and funny, yet gets technical enough to be convincing. The most beautiful part is that it is your chioce and your health. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. The section on exercise makes you rethink your exercise program. If you want to be healthy, read this book. If not, pass it up. It's up to you, and only you..

I hesitate to give any item 5 stars--indeed a search will show most of my reviews give mixed or low marks to products. I would have preferred to give it a 4.5, but if between a 4 or 5, I will give it the extra notch.

Overall, the book is not just useful health information on elderly kitties, it is also an homage to them. It attempts to take the reader into an understanding of the difficulties elderly cats face, and how not just to recognize and treat them, but also how to give them a better quality of life and more happiness.

If you want a medical veterinary guide, this book is not in-depth enough. If you want a good guide on elder kitty care and what to do in emergencies to give your cat enough time to get to the vet, this is a good book.

A terrific & moving book.

"Your Older Cat" by Susan Easterly is for every cat owner. Even if your cats aren't old, you should read this book. It provides state-of-the-art cat advice... techniques that most people haven't heard about yet that can help prevent problems in later years. And it gives comprehensive, compassionate advice for dealing with older cats. Very well written and organized, beautiful pictures and great design, "Your Older Cat" is fun and easy to read. I recommend it highly for yourself and others.

Easterly isn't just a sensitive and knowledgeable writer. She's certainly that, but instead of offering up merely entertaining anecdotes and wistful musings, she gets into the helpful details straightaway. The book is slim and beautifully designed, and the photos and illustrations are easy on the eyes, all of which lends an effective visual frame to Easterly's excellent data and advice.

This isn't a cute-kitty book. Those who are committed companions of older felines will find a wealth of compassionately practical and useful information in this terrific book. Highly recommended.

Great Book for Caring Cat Owners

Review Date: 2003-11-13
This is a great book for caring cat owners. It starts out explaining the aging process in cats, which is NOT as simple as the "seven cat years for one human year" formula we used to hear. There's information about preventative care, first aid, age-related problems, and - of course - the final decision you may have to make for your cat. There's even information about grief and mourning, both yours and that of other cats you may have.

"Your Older Cat" is full of photos, charts, graphs, sidebars, and other materials that make this an easily accessible book. Cats are not complainers, and if you have trouble figuring out when your cat is in pain, Easterly's book will help.

This is not some thick, academic tome. It's a well-written, easily-read book you can turn to when you're worried. Or you can pick it up and enjoy the beautiful photos of cats. There's also a great resource section, with books, magazines, videos, and organizations listed.

Change Is Easy Now That I Know My Personality Type

You can't change unless you know what you're doing wrong. Finding out my personality type has opened my eyes to why I've been eating wrong, why I have become a couch potato, how others have influenced my lifestyle habits. But no more! Being aware of my type has shown me not only the challenges my type presents, but best of all, how I can use the strengths of my personality type to change. It just makes sense to make changes that are comfortable for my type than to try to change in a way that worked for somebody else. With 16 different personality types, I shouldn't expect to making healthy changes the way everybody else does. It makes me feel that I'm an individual and should take care of my personal needs. Now I have the way! Thanks to Roberta for making it so easy.

"At last, a book written with more than the "do's and don'ts" of dieting. This book goes beyond the "readiness to change" point in the process of food habits' management to the way you can make decisions about your health and weight for a lifetime. It helps you learn the "whys and hows" of making decisions about your health, food, eating, exercise and activity, all based on your personality type. You will understand more about past failures and how to make choices that make a difference this time. You will find your personality type, self assess and learn about the way you think and make choices. The format is easy to use, the health information is accurate, the decision tree is invaluable and the recipes are great. This book will be one of your best investments in yourself. I found this a very refreshing perspective after so many books that missed the mark. I highly recommend it."

Showing the way forward for cancer treatment ...

Dr. Binzel backs up the information found in "World Without Cancer" with actual case histories and results.

For those that think that Laetrile is the only component in cancer treatment, this book shows why, and how, cancer needs to be treated - a combination of vitamins, diet and laetrile.

Actual programs used to achieve 82% success rates in treating primary cancer, and 65% in treating metastates cancer, show you the vast difference between "orthodox" cancer treatment, with success rates of less than 10%, to this "un-approved" treatment.

Most definitely something you want to share with your friends.

What if there was an medical doctor with an outstanding nutritional program for cancer? Would the FDA try to squelch the doctor's findings and try to prevent him from practicing? Cancer treatment is a huge industry for big pharmaceutical companies and cancer treatment centers. Would they go out of business if there was a simple, nutritional protocol with excellent results against cancer? What if simple nutritional methods to nourish the body's own immune system and prevent cancer's spread are much better than the expensive, toxic radiation and high-priced proprietary toxic chemo drugs dispensed at today's oncology centers? What if the cancer drug your doctor dispenses depends on which drug company's pharmaceutical rep takes him out to lunch? This book tells you that "what if," in detail, and in real life. It details various government agencies' attempts to harass Dr. Binzel through "enforcers" and the legal system. Binzel presents an astonishing record of 85% 5-year survival among his patients with primary cancer and 60% survival for those with metastatic cancer. These results can't be verified, because of the privacy of his patients' medical records. But some of the survivors agreed to let their names and medical histories be released, and they are shown in this book. The book also shows you the 3-part treatment system Binzel used - 1. Vitamins and enzymes, 2. vegetarian diet, and 3. nitrocilides, or vitamin B17, which is found in everyday foods like millet, lentils, alfalfa sprouts, garbanzo beans and apple seeds. This is an enjoyable read if you suffer from cancer, or know someone who does. It is not the promise of a cure. The basic idea is to support and enhance your body's own natural defenses against cancer. Highly recommended, whether you support today's cytotoxic chemotherapy methods or not. The FDA would never try to lie to you, or manipulate the results of drug studies funded by big drug companies, would they? Drug companies contribute to political campaigns, but that doesn't influence laws about our health, does it?

Many of the pro-Laetrile works that I have read were written by private citizens and laymen, and as a result one would say that these were not qualified to make claims. And such accusations have been made.

Now we have hard evidence in favor of Laetrile from a MEDICAL DOCTOR! Finally! A qualified source since Dr. Ernst Krebs' initial discovery has been found. A must read to accompany World Without Cancer by G. Edward Griffin.

Fabulous book! I am a cancer patient, and this is my favorite book (of about 15) of alternative cancer treatments. It gives so much hope, is an easy read, and seems to be very credible- important when one's life hangs in the balance! I can get all of the recommended supplements (especially vitamins B-15 and B-17) on-line and another book, Treating Cancer Through Nutrition (more scholarly), lists nutritional doctors state by state. One other book I'd recommend is Outsmart Your Cancer (hopeful, easy read)- it has info on many alternative treatments. I'm ordering my third copy of this book, as I give many of mine away to newly diagnosed, terrified people. I'm also ordering Dr. Lorraine Day's videos- look for a future review.

For the most part, I am enjoying this book. The diet is based on the food pyramid, and the exercise program has do-able daily choices. My only complaints are the following: First, the page quality is very poor. I felt like I had to be really careful turning the pages or they would tear. Second, some of the exercise photos show very poor form, like knees extending past ankles is lunges. All in all, it's a good book.

Absolutely everything is spelled out for you, there is no guesswork. You can say goodbye to calorie counting, pre-packaged meals and supplements. The bottom line is: This book works.

An excellent book! I found this to be the most comprehensive, informative and easy to understand health-related book I've ever read. It refocuses the long-time emphasis away from weight control and calorie counting to the real health problem facing millions of Americans: Fat. It clearly defines the problem and the best way to tackle it. Not only does it include lots of exercises designed to fight fat, it also devotes many pages to nutrition, diet, menus and the psychology of improving over-all health by reducing the percentage of fat in ones body. It's the kind of book you can continually refer to. It's already helped me look and feel better. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to avoid fad diets and deceptive weight-loss schemes.

I like this book a lot. First of all, the authors have proper credentials (a lot of authors don't, even some celebrity diet gurus). One author is an M.S./R.D. who works as a nutritionist; the other is an M.D. who works with weight loss/obesity. For those of you looking for a quick fix, I'm sorry, you won't find it here! This is an informative, sensible guide to eating healthfully and losing weight gradually (c'mon, we all know that diets don't work). This book explains why you want to eat healthfully -- which nutrients your body needs, and how you can get them. In addition, it stresses the importance of exercise and makes you want to get moving. The authors don't expect you to never again eat junk food, but call for including it occasionally in a balanced, planned way of eating. Another thing I liked was the fact that this book addresses psychological issues as well -- it makes you examine why you eat, and includes a lot of motivational help. Note to vegetarians: Your needs are addressed throughout.

This book has been a life saver! I had been toying with the idea for years about losing some weight, but got tired of all the diet bars, powders, etc.. I got this book on a whim and I have been very pleased with it. It shows you how to change your life so you can be healthy not just thin. I have recommended this book to about 10 friends I know who just don't know the right way to take off and keep off the weight. Thank you Susan!

When I had my first child, I was in bed for 2 weeks hardly able to walk from the pain. It took me a whole year before I did not feel some kind of pain now and then if I walked a lot.

My friend loaned me this fantastic book and after following the childbirth recommendations for herbs, I can say with certainty, that 10 minutes after giving birth, I was up and around without any pain at all- EVER! Not even with an episiotomy!

My daughter was just as large as my son was too.

This book is a very thorough reference book with a LOT of information for women-specific problems.

Each herb has a color photo of it along with in depth descriptions of the herb, history and uses.

I found this book to be fabulous and a very important book to have. The delivery of my daughter was a shock to me- NO AFTER PAIN!

By the way, the birth pains were still strong- just the after pains were not there at all.

This is one of the best herb books I've come across. The pictures and drawings of the herbs are excellent. The information is organized according to the seasons of a woman's life--puberty, motherhood, menopause, etc. There is also a lot of information on herbs for children and a section for general family care. A table at the end summarizing which herbs are useful for which ailments is a huge help when you are in a big hurry to find a remedy. Any woman who uses herbs at all should have this book. It's well worth the money.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars in medical bills for the past 6 months. I have monthly urinary track infections, which cost money I rather spend somewhere else. This book gave me the remedy I needed to cure myself and save my wallet. I recommend this book to any woman who suffers like I do, it's great!

This book is a wonderful sourse of information about health, illness, herbs and their properties. Many helpful recipes. It does lack a guide as to how much of the herbs to use for body mass - which is critical in not over or under using the herb as a medicine.

This book is endorsed by The American Diabetes Assn. & The American Dietetic Assn. It should also be endorsed by The American Heart Assn. Not only does it help give the reader information needed for a diabetic, it also gives information needed for a person with heart disease.
My husband has diabetes, high cholesterol, quadruple bypass, heart disease, stroke, 100% occluded carotid artery on one side and 60-70% occluded on the other side, just to mention a FEW of his problems.
This Guide not only addresses the diabetes & carbohydrate issue, but also addresses the cholesterol issue. I use it in conjunction with several Diabetes/Cholesterol Cookbooks. For every item, 11 columns of information as follows are listed: Serving Size, Calories, grams of Carbs, grams of Fat, % Calories of Fat, grams of Saturated Fat, mg. of Cholesterol, mg. of Sodium, grams of fiber, grams of Protein, and # of Servings/Exchanges.
The foods are grouped according to category. There are 28 categories. The categories are presented in a logical, systematic way, making this book an easy reference guide for a clueless novice like me.
I highly recommend this book not only for diabetics but for people with heart disease, for people on Weight Watchers diet and especially for the rest of us making up the majority of America who are overweight.
According to John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Human Nutrition, by the year 2015 ---- that's only 7 YEARS FROM NOW ---- 75% of American adults will be overweight, 41% will be obese and nearly 24% of U.S. children or adolescents will be overweight or obese.
In 2004, 32% of Americans were obese. Forty years ago, in 1964, only 13% of Americans were obese.
At risk are women ages 20 - 34 years old, regardless of race or ethnicity; 80% of black women age 40 and above are overweight while 50% are obese.
Wake up, America and do it now, not 7 years from now. The Diabetes Carbohydrate & Fat Gram Guide, 3rd Edition, used as a starting point gives you basic information needed BEFORE you go to the grocery store. Buy a few good cookbooks in addition to this book you're good to go.
This book gives you 4 meal-planning approaches: carb counting, fat gram counting, food exchange system and calorie counting. So if one approach confuses you, you have other options. What a deal!
Buy the book. Use it. Don't end up like my husband.

Having lost over 130 pounds and keeping that weight off for almost 4 years, I thought I had all the useful resources I needed to maintain that weight loss. That was until I opened this book!

I follow the exchange program as a means to monitor my food intake. Not only does this book include the exchanges, it also lists the nutrition information for the following: calories, carbohydrates, fat, % of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber and protein. It lists the serving size so there is no confusion on the amount you should be eating.

The list of foods featured is extensive. This book has featured EVERY item that I've researched from beverages to frozen foods, canned soups to fast food and even ethnic foods.

Anyone following a weight loss program that uses portion control or the exchange program (such as TOPS - Take Off Pounds Sensibly) should not be without this book!

If you are debating purchasing this book as a means to lose weight, you might the following item useful as well:
